This is unacceptable, @verizon. Messaging parents and students is ANYTHING but spam.
Charging @RemindHQ "spam fees" is a preposterous way to handle this issue.
Remind can't send to Verizon accts, leaving parents and kids in the cold.
There HAS TO BE a better way, Verizon.
A1: I LOVED Barbies, Babies, and Board Games. We game several gaming stations, but my three bros usually hogged them!
#edtechchat
GREAT question...can't wait to see where this leads us...
A1: Toys that could allow me to transform into a character. I remember having a life-like Ghostbusters backpack gun thing that they used in the movies. #edtechchat
Throwback Monday!
I moved around a lot as a kid so the toys were simple. Loved legos and building forts in the woods. Hungry hungry hippos also made a weekly appearance on the bed room floor. #edtechchat
not sure ... there will be new seat in the classroom with a part of it. Will be checking the motor tomorrow ... 6 batteries are good ... kids checked those today. #edtechchat
A1 - balls- footballs, kickballs, volleyballs. And I had a metal small kitchen set that I liked. Wasn’t much of a toy lover, enjoyed outside more. #edtechchat
Hey @verizon#ReverseTheFee@RemindHQ is a FREE text service that allows teachers to communicate with parents and students. It is not spam. Maybe you should investigate what it actually is before you access an extra fee that will prevent the effective use of the app. #edtechchat
We used to do the national turn off your tv for a week. We would play every night. We still play Mexican Train every couple of weeks. #edtechchat#LoveGames
I used to build massive space stations that covered an entire queen sized bed - on plywood boards - with space knights and ships and space tugs and everything! #edtechchat
A2: Sadly, it's only video games that gain my Ss attention. When we play card games or board games, it's a totally new experience with them. #edtechchat
A2: Ss still LOVE board games, but one newish game that Ss love and so do I...@PlayOsmo. Love all the different games you can play. Bought one for the grands
#edtechchat
A2 I don't see much student wise (since I'm not in the classroom) but for my children they love their duplo blocks and anything resembling technology #edtechchat
A2 It seems like my students and I are in agreement that legos are pretty cool.
They are also excited to use reclaimed materials to build, tinker in Minecraft, and build snow forts in the playground. #edtechchat
A2: I actually don’t think my students knew what captivated them. They expect technology to do it, but then they find other things that shock their interest. My 8th graders love UNO!#edtechchat
A1 I can only speak anecdotally to this one as I am not in the classroom, but what I see being used are some of the old standbyes. Legos, board games, and pretty much things that take some imagination on the part of the student #EdTechChat Electronics go without saying.
Lincoln logs!! Yes! I forgot all about those. I still remember my father stepping on the small ones when they were scattered all over the floor, hah! #edtechchat
A2: We have used raspberry pi's lighting stuff up, a new drone flying around campus, and a few robotics tricks to capture student interest this year. #edtechchat
A2: any material I put out but don’t explain. They love to guess what we are going to do. Sometimes I keep them out for days until we use them to build the suspense!!! 😂 #edtechchat
A1: I loved toys I could build with. Erector sets, Lincoln logs and the like. As I grew older I came to love board games. Monopoly and Stratego were two of my favorites. #EdTechChat
kids love the digital games ... BUT ... i see so many fall in love with tools when they use them. watching kids use that twisting thing (ratchet) on the golf cart and the sense of satisfaction they get is awesome #edtechchat
A2- Seems like students are more into playing online games now. I work in middle and high school programs. All screen time and distractions. #edtechchat
A3 Toys are not a distraction. I have animals along the windowsill crafted from old bike chains and a side table contains puzzles and games. These act as brain breaks for my Ss and a community gathering spot during down time. #edtechchat#playtolearn
I think that toys are an integral part of student learning, especially at a young age. They allow students to use their creativity and imagination which is so important for the learning process. #edtechchat
A3 I cannot imagine toys being any more of a distraction than what is already in the environment. Pretty much if a student wants to get distracted, they are going to get distracted, #EdTechCHat
A3a I used them as a reward. No down time in the classroom! Finished early? Grab a game. Kids played chess, checkers, battleship, connect 4, and some other strategy games. Helped develop their strategic thinking. #edtechchat
A3: Have toys in my clsssroom! Car track, sequin pillow, Ralphie the plastic rat, instruments, Legos. Not s distraction when I’m teaching. Ss come in and play before and after class and talk as they play. #edtechchat
A3a: Toys would only be a distraction if they are not taught how to engage with them. Toys just like any other learning tool must have expectations and taught how to use them/not use them in order to be an effective learning tool #edtechchat
I feel like they are appropriate at times! Some people may frown upon them, but I think that are wonderful manipulatives for students! Quickly engaging and prompts critical thinking! #EdTechChat
A3 I have a rotation of toys/games that stay out during the day. Rush Hour, SET, Jenga, Scrabble, puzzles, Jitters, jacks, dominoes, and more. Ss always have access to the cabinet when they want it. #edtechchat
what constitutes a distraction? I think many teachers are just looking for a scapegoat ... seriously the wind blowing outside will distract a kid ... the fly buzzing over the trash #edtechchat
that is so true. I was observing in a Biology class last week, and the kids absolutely loved using clay and other materials to create genetic models. #EdTechCHat
A3: balance and relevance key, but also in today’s world kids don’t often experience tradugame play, it can be a valuable experience to build in as a treat. I have had very relevant learning moments in game play. #edtechchat
A3b: It is all about using the toy in the process. if it is a reward it is a distraction. It has to be part of the learning first, then it becomes desired. #edtechchat
A3b be intentional with your pedagogy. What do you hope the tool accomplished? Make sure you are leading your students that direction when introducing the tool/toy and have feedback/dialogue afterwards so it isn’t seen as non- purposeful #edtechchat
A toy into a tool is a purpose. Think about the overall skill—collaboration? Critical thinking? Then think of the task. Do you need Ss to think? Question? Engage? #edtechchat
A3b: How about, "How do you turn a tool into a toy?" I found that a simple tape measure was one of my S's favorites. We'd use blue tape, guess and measure from here to there, one object to another, all across room. #edtechchat
A3b: I guess I took care of both parts in my first response! :) I also find it helpful to offer reminders to Ss as to what may happen if expectations aren't followed with toys/tools #edtechchat
A3a: Toys would only be a distraction if they are not taught how to engage with them. Toys just like any other learning tool must have expectations and taught how to use them/not use them in order to be an effective learning tool #edtechchat
A3b - Allow for playful exploration first. Share expectations and goals making sure the purpose is clear. Provide time for students to reflect on the learning moment so they can articulate the learning and how "playing" helped. #PlayToLearn#edtechchat
Jenga has been good for keeping them engaged. Get a question wrong you pull. If you knock it down you lose all points. Trying to figure out how to incorporate into MLA formatting or research paper writing. #edtechchat maybe have kids pull to find out revision task
A4: Motion capture for playing with lego - any video or camera app for storytelling - really anything that amplifies or enhances the use of the toy #edtechchat
And I believe most kids come to PreK/k thinking of an iPad as a toy because it is learned before they get there, we must unteach that concept and open their eyes to its use as a tool for learning #digitalnatives#edtechchat

A3b: if Ss can use a toy/tool to create, let them have at it. Ss should have freedom to explore, iterate and master. They need time, space and our encouragement #edtechchat
A4 Well there is the oldie but goodie.... Minecraft, but that one is almost becoming cliche. #edtechchat
I really like the programmable computers like sphero...
It's so true! Trouble with units too. Highs cool students often just don't have the real time experience. Love the "shoes" for measuring. How many "steps" away? #edtechchat
a3 I use Legos to explain the need to learn intentionally. If we just throw bricks at the base, they tumble off when the base is shaken. Notifications on our phones do that if we havent firmly pressed info in place first. #edtechchat
A4: I’ve seen legos used well in stem lab/engineering. @SpheroEdu has been great for all ages - K Ss can use the trace to draw letters, 3rd graders have coded bot to identify story elements, plus transformations, graph of movement in physics/math. Great play too! #edtechchat
I’m going to throw down a challenge to my Ss — a homework and charging pass and a king size candy bar to anyone who can beat me in scrabble #EdTechChat
My admin doesn’t need convincing. Day 1 at the school he said “I trust you as educators. Do whatever it takes to teach our kids. You are professionals” #edtechchat
A5: Make sure they are invited to the lesson that teaches them what to do, and get them involved int he discovery process. it is transformative! #edtechchat

Guess who’s got 2 thumbs and just registered to attend #ISTE19? So pumped to attend my first ever @iste Conference in Philly this June with some awesome coworkers of mine! #edtech#edtechchat
Invite admin to play games with the students. It will help the kids see admin in a positive light. Mine poses riddles to the high school students. #edtechchat
This is where I value the power of our student generated blog. Ss capture video sharing what they are doing and what they are learning. The video is posted and viewed by families and the community. Stop motion, minecraft screencasts, etc all show up! #edtechchat
Or go one step further, and have your Ss do it for you. #EdTechChat
I think your step is missing in a lot of areas in the classroom. Not enough "bragging" from the Ts on the great things they are doing.
A5: Sometimes the trick is in semantics. Toys in math and science are "manipulatives." Toys in ELD instruction are "realia." Toys in social science can be "props" or "tools." #edtechchat
A6: Not in classroom anymore, but love when I see Ts using any digital toy (@PlayOsmo, @dash_and_dot, @Ozobot, etc) when it is used to push learning!
