#5thchat is for people interested in chatting about topics in education, especially as they relate to Grade 5. The goal is to connect people who enjoy learning & sharing, plus supporting & creating partnerships worldwide!
A1: I'm trying out sorting my classes into 4 separate houses (similar to Harry Potter) so I'm doing a break out edu with @mdeegan122 so students can discover which house they will belong to. I'm excited, but a little nervous about it too! #5thchat
A1 - When I was in a classroom, we would always play Jenga. It's a fun, exciting way to make friends and team build. Then we discuss how playing Jenga is similar to learning new things. Nervous, shaky, strong foundations, friends to help guide you etc. Always fun. #5thchat
A1 # #5thchat I have several little get-to-know-you games prepared. I am planning some quick speed dating for the first day. My plan is to introduce myself and have them use "Me llamo" and meet as many as they can.
A2: One staple for me is IRT; it boggles my mind how many times kids don't actually read in Reading class. We independently read for 8 minutes each class period. #5thchat
#5thchat@DMooreSpanish love the questions! and what a great idea, school BBQ! A2: In terms of a staple, I like to cluster activities and I like to have subthemes that we discuss and delve into on that day. I am big on having powering opening- short flims, pictures, something
A2 - "hanging out" to give kids a sense of comfort. Just going and sitting by them working and talking about 'nothing' while working on something too. #5thchat
Q3 The main entree is important, but it always needs to be complimented by a side dish too. What is your favorite activity or lesson to teach that coincides with your main standards? #5thchat

A3- Student Choice! I use this chart in teaching kiddos how to learn and they choose activities based on where they are and where they are going. #5thchat
A3: not sure that this counts as an activity, probably more the way it all runs, but my grids are my favorite! Love the self paced, mastery piece! #5thchat
#5thchat A3 Favorite lesson/ actiivity is our unit on Social Media! My favorite activity is "Las confesiones del celular". Students are given the task not to touch their phones for 2 hours (outside of class), and they come back to confess. We started by saying...
#5thchat A3 "me llamo Alicia y soy adicta al celular/móvil. They they had to rattle off a few things they did using the past tense. So fun! It makes them cognizant of how much they depend and are controlled by the phone.
A4 #5thchat "glitter" I believe to achieve mastery students have to create from scratch some kind of representation of their knowledge. Give them access to paper, scissors, glue, markers and anything else you can.
A5: Actual dessert is my favorite! I love a piece of cake or something sweet right when I come home. Going to dance class also helps, whether I'm teaching or taking my own class. #5thchat
Not sure where we are at timewise, but here is A5: Spending time with family. We love watching shows on Netflix or playing board games. When we are in school, we need to be more intentional about making time for one another. #5thchat
#5thchat A5- Just keeping it real (not every day). Nice glass of Malbec, and I sit in the quiet of home with the lights off for about 10 minutes. May seem kind of "Silence of the Lambs-ish (Hello, Clarice), but I have to totally disconnect.
A6 #5thchat UNO is a fun one to mix up. You can make colors = activity. Put down a red card, say a verb. Put down a blue card, give a personification ex, Based on the standard...
A6: In our Lab we give the kids space to create their own games using @scratch or @koduteam. Our thought is, they have extensive experience playing games...why not program your own? #5thchat
A7: I use music a lot in my classroom! It's always playing when Ss enter class, during independent or group work, & for brain breaks. Sometimes we have Friday dance parties too! I love playing old-school music for them! #5thchat
You know it! You are going to be blown away by the things that we want to do this year in the Lab! We have big plans to bring, YOU, the teachers in to the fun we get to have each day! Stay tuned. #5thchat
A7: joining late! I always have music playing in my room. I use it as a way to eliminate the other distracting noises. I choose to have a different playlist for each day of the week. #instrumentalmusic#5thchat
A7: I love music, so therefore we always have it on in our Lab! It provides background noise for all the discussion taking place at each engagement. Music is the oil that makes the machine run. So much brain research on the effect that music has on student productivity. #5thchat
A8: I'm switching my curriculum to fit into the Grid Method (@teachbetterteam) pedagogy, so I hope my firecracker moment is all Ss successfully finishing their first grid by the end of September! #5thchat
A8: We discussed this today in our department meeting. We want to take kids further at each engagement, trying to make their experiences more relevant and memorable. Also, I have an activity that I'll tweet out later involving the words "Now, How, & Yet". #5thchat
For the boss battles I usually google Epic Fantasy Music or Epic Battle music and pick something from the list. Dark Music or Sad Piano are other searches to set a spooky mood! #5thChat haha and I always thought all your questions are serious!
Alright #5thchat. Gotta blaze. They are literally throwing me out of the building. If you are up for it, check out #122edchat tomorrow night at 7 Central, hosted by @kristi_daws, and attended by our favorite Canadian, @MrBaskwill.
