Welcome #G2Great friends. We're so grateful to have our good friend Cornelius here tonight. Unfortunately I'm on a plane at this moment so I’m ROBO pretweet Mary until wifi kicks in. I’ll be here for real as soon as the internet in the sky kicks in. ❤️

It is a good night when I can drop into a #g2great chat! I’m Stephanie, a literacy teacher educator from NY. I only have a few minutes until I become a mom-taxi, but I’ll soak up the learning with @MisterMinor and the #g2great crew as long as I can!
#G2Great Hi Everyone, Kass here. Inclusive educator located in Broooklllynnnn! I'm the lucky girl who gets to sit across the kitchen table while this twitter chat goes down!
Brent from Magrath live as the boys start to trickle in for basketball practice. I know nothing about basketball but happy to help if I can haha #G2Great
Roman from Ontario, Canada.
HS ELA Teacher/Student Success Leader\Agent of Transformation.
Happy to check in to talk about #WeGotThis with the #g2great crew and @MisterMinor
#G2great Hi Everyone, Kass here! Inclusive Educator located in Brookllynnnn!! I'm the lucky girl who gets to sit across from @MisterMinor while this twitter chat goes down!
A1: As a teacher educator, I want to educate teachers who have the expertise, the experience and the leadership skills needed to connect and advocate for the children in front of them. #g2great

A1 To carry the beliefs I hold dear and have spent my entire career better understanding in my back pocket regardless of the craziness that surrounds us. At some point, compliance has to take a back seat to what really matters. #G2Great#WeGotThis
A1 My ultimate goal is the create an environment where students are safe to be themselves, where they love to learn, where they are passionate about what they do, where they love to read & want to share their opinions. I want them to want to come to school, not cringe. #g2great
A1 I want to deliver the message that teachers are human, too - that we all make mistakes and are (hopefully) in the classroom to learn from each other and to share stories #G2Great
A1: The tools and confidence that comes from balanced learning focused on their needs. I also desperately want them to have a love for reading, curiosity in the world and a passion to take action and make change in the world #g2great
A1 I want to deliver the message that teachers are human, too - that we all make mistakes and are (hopefully) in the classroom to learn from each other and to share stories #G2Great
#g2great A1 As a Literacy Coach I want to equip & empower educators so that they can keep students & their calling at their center, confident in building relationships that nurture & nudge them today and give them what they’ll need in the future
A1 I want our writing instruction to focus on helping my students find their voices… and while doing so, show them that their voices and their stories matter. #G2Great
A1: I strive to make sure everyone feels seen, heard, respected, safe, and cared for - and THEN excited about all the amazing learning we get to share in together! #g2great
A1 We teachers have so many expectations and it is easy to lose focus of what is most important. My goal is to continuously work towards being in the moment with my young second graders, for once the moment passes, it’s gone. #g2Great
A1: I want to deliver for Ss a safe, welcoming, inclusive environment in which they are able to take risks, enjoy learning & stretch their thinking. #g2great
A1 My deep love and appreciation for kids and the teachers who share that love and appreciation is at the heart of all I do. Like everyone else, I make mistakes but I learn from them when I fall short (and we all will!) #G2Great#WeGotThis
A1 For every student to find their "wings" know what their goal is for life after HS... to KNOW what makes them HAPPY and build their toolkit on how to sustain and build that happiness
#g2great
A1: Critical Care. I want all the people, teachers, kids, and admin alike, that I work with to feel cared for, to walk into a space and know that whomever they are is the person that is accepted; that they can feel proud & heard & important no matter what. #G2Great
A1: I want to deliver material that is considered raw/uncut so that students can use the knowledge from various media to make the future better and the mistakes from the past are not related. (*It might seem corny, but it's my truth*)

A1 I want to create a space where all of my kids feel validated. That their experiences and stories matter and will always have a place in our classroom #g2great
A1: I want them to read and write more in my class than ever before. I want them to discuss and debate the ideas that they read and write about, and build empathy by reading diverse literature. #g2great
A1: I want my students to know that we can’t avoid talking about tough issues. We must meet them head on. Noting is off limits in the classroom, if a kid asks we owe them a well thought out answer. #G2Great
A1: I want to create a space where kids can actually get good at freedom & to resist the urge to clamp down on it when it's messy. 1st year w/Writing Workshop as a class has been tough. It feels like kids have been set up to fail sometimes by testing driven curriculum. #g2great
A1: I also want to not only say but also show that I will not give up on them. So often there is difficulty in truly showing how much we care. It's all about what we do and how we support. #g2great
#g2great A1 I want all kids to know they’ve been both seen & heard & valued for their unique contributions; to be given choice & a voice; a mirror, a window, a door (Bishop)
A1 One of my favorite things is my informal “coffice conversations” with Ts. There’s something so powerful about agenda free dialogue beyond the school setting. I’m so grateful to teachers who trust me with their heart.(and babies welcome!) #G2Great#WeGotThis
A1 We teachers have so many expectations and it is easy to lose focus of what is most important. My goal is to continuously work towards being in the moment with my young second graders, for once the moment passes, it’s gone. #g2Great

I've totally seen this in my own classroom. Students have been pumped full of this idea that their writing has to be perfect from the get-go. Process, not product #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A2: Barriers:
Ts tied to textbooks.
Ts tied to "one way."
T and Admin beliefs.
Community beliefs.
State laws & people's interpretation of said laws.
#1 is FEAR! Fear of being different, wrong, or not getting the expected results from quality practices!
#g2great
It is so powerful to read people's answers to Q1...
It's powerful to note that wherever we are in our work, that our desire for kids to have powerful futures has not waned. #G2Great

#g2great
A2 Time is always 1 of my biggest barriers… but I’ve learned that it’s important to take a step back and consider WHY the timeline is there in the 1st place. Does it really need to be there? Does it really need to be that rigid? #g2great
A1: One of the most important goals I have this year is to find those barriers that prevent my Ss from reaching success, to notice deeply what's wrong, what can be tweaked, so that access is greater. #G2Great
I want my students to leave my classroom carrying a personal definition of freedom -- having experienced it fully in B-1 -- and a toolbox full of strategies to successfully advocate for themselves in future academic settings. #G2Great
A2 My biggest challenge is that there’s only so many hours in the day to do what I hope to achieve. I can’t miraculously add more hours to my day so I’m trying hard to pick & choose and still leave time for ME. It’s a work in progress with mixed success. #G2Great#WeGotThis
A2: Sometimes the barrier is building a relationship with the family units that encircle our Ss. They need to know we won't give up on them either. That reassurance can build so much trust. #G2Great
Question 2 is an important one... I hope that people answer candidly. One great barrier to our progress forward is our fear of the very truths that can unite us... #G2Great

A1 My hope is that students will read widely and critically, to experiment with and freely express their ideas, to realize the significance of their learning--its influence on them and others. #G2Great
A1: I want my students to know that even if I haven't had the same experiences as them I value their perspective and what they bring to the table. The differences among us shouldn't operate as a disadvantage to overcome, but as an opportunity to grow all of us. #G2Great
A1: I want my children to have a safe space to learn and grow. I want them to be able to take risks in their learning and push themselves past their self-imposed barriers-in school and in life. #G2Great#WeGotThis
A1: Students to see themselves in the books they read, so they know they are not alone. Students able to share their truth in what they write, so others can see them through their words. #G2Great
I want my students to leave my classroom carrying a personal definition of freedom -- having experienced it fully in B-1 -- and a toolbox full of strategies to successfully advocate for themselves in future academic settings. #G2Great
A2: Sometimes the barriers are the elements I can’t control: home lives, attendance, low motivation. Sometimes, I can’t get out of my own way and just eliminate something good in favor of something great! #G2Great
Q2. Barriers can include a curriculum that does not consider how certain students think and process information. I want my students to know it is my job to make the information accessible to them. #g2great
A2: Political exhaustion, so many people waiting on "permission" to do a thing, fear of "messy" teaching, traumatic observations, school hierarchies #g2great
A2 A long history of taking away a love of reading, of not offering choice, of a system that treats kids as the same instead of unique. I find myself in high school trying to undo some of what traditional learning did with difficulty. How do you reignite that passion? #g2great
A2: Barriers:

#g2great
A2. Love this Q, @MisterMinor! #Fear is the greatest barrier for sure. Ps and Ts feeling like they're not allowed to do what they believe in. By far the biggest barrier! #G2Great
A2 As Brene Brown might say... JOY is often our biggest obstacle. Once our Ss feel it they fear losing it, they wont lean in and worry about the other shoe dropping. Our Ts too... and me too some times... thats hard. We got to get used to be ok with being HAPPY
#G2Great
That darned inflight wifi sure took a painfully slow time kicking in. Apparently the airlines have no clue just how much I positively ADORE Cornelius but I’m join the part for real now… 14000 feet in the WE GOT THIS celebratory air! Hi #G2Great . Hi Cornelius ❤️ @MisterMinor
A2: Wanting to truly meet needs of Ss when there is so much pressure to ACHIEVE standards and BE THE BEST! We would all be better if we could breathe a minute and take care of each other. #G2great Turmoil doesn't make a great learning environment.
A2 Time is a constant barrier, but I think administrative "deliverables" and demands are my biggest barrier of all. Let me teach! #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A2 My biggest challenge is that there’s only so many hours in the day to do what I hope to achieve. I can’t miraculously add more hours to my day so I’m trying hard to pick & choose and still leave time for ME. It’s a work in progress with mixed success. #G2Great#WeGotThis
A2: maybe not a barrier- but a hurdle: Feeling comfortable with Ss timetable... it can take some students a little longer to feel the love, build the prereq. trust, and want to connect- and I want to be patient/respect this- but also am SO wanting it to happen. #G2Great
A2b Forgot to mention the additional piece of shifting the mindset. Sometimes we need to get a little uncomfortable in our practice so we can grow! Letting my Ss take the reigns can be intimidating & the road may be uncertain, but it’s all worth it when we get there #G2Great
A2: Political exhaustion, so many people waiting on "permission" to do a thing, fear of "messy" teaching, traumatic observations, school hierarchies #g2great
I agree, time is a huge factor. I just want one more hour in the day, but I know if I had that I'd still want an hour more! Thinking about priorities is sometimes helpful. #g2great
A2: I mean this very respectfully but two things get in the way. 1) Getting distracted 2) Worksheets. I think we need to be very intentional about how we spend class time. For me, if we aren't using it to read, write, speak, or listen, I'm a bit wary. #G2Great
A2: I struggle with this: are the barriers that the expectations from the "powers that be" are too much...stretching me too thin...OR is it that I put too much pressure on myself to do everything that is asked of me? Am I the barrier? #g2great
#g2great A2 As a coach much like a teacher being present & not getting distracted by the pressures to “perform”, to be an “expert”, to balancing supporting with nudging and standing firm with what we know is in best interests of teachers & students, balance direction & response
A2 I’d like to find time to get back in the book writing seat but I can’t seem to find room in my life (although I still write regularly). I own my shortcomings but am still trying to figure it all out. #G2Great#WeGotThis
A2: Political exhaustion, so many people waiting on "permission" to do a thing, fear of "messy" teaching, traumatic observations, school hierarchies #g2great
A2 So my goal is to be in the moment with my young Ss. A barrier to that is that like most Ts, I am always needing to plan ahead. So I need to find a balance between organization and being in the moment. I’m happiest teaching when I’m really present. #G2Great
Yes priorities. We can’t say YES to what doesn’t matter if we have to say NO to what does. It’s about being honest and putting kids above our desires (or whims) #G2Great
I agree, time is a huge factor. I just want one more hour in the day, but I know if I had that I'd still want an hour more! Thinking about priorities is sometimes helpful. #g2great
A2: I think I have my own insecurities. I want to guide my Ss to discover truths and question the world. Sometimes this means rethinking the way I have been taught to see the world. #g2great
Yes priorities.
#g2great
A2: Biggest barrier is time. My work/life balance can get out of wack really quickly. Other barriers include getting buy in from other Ts and financially supporting classroom libraries in a small county. #G2Great
There’s definitely comfort in numbers though. None of this feels quite as scary when there are so many others doing the same important work every day (and there are) #G2Great
A2: Political exhaustion, so many people waiting on "permission" to do a thing, fear of "messy" teaching, traumatic observations, school hierarchies #g2great
A2 I want to “fix” problems Ts face in schools in my work and yet I know that there’s only so much I can do. I’m saddened when politics & mandates leave little room for teacher decision making and this new reality causes many sleepless nights. #G2Great#WeGotThis
I hear you, @tomlittogether...
Fear prevents so many things... And for those of us who follow the Jedi Code, (shout out to Master Yoda) following our fears leads to incredible darkness... #G2Great
A2. Love this Q, @MisterMinor! #Fear is the greatest barrier for sure. Ps and Ts feeling like they're not allowed to do what they believe in. By far the biggest barrier! #G2Great
A2: Pressure of comparison. Know that my space will look messy in comparison to others who take a more "no excuses" approach & worried I won't be able to prove that the work in my classroom is actually working. But also I know that shouldn't matter so there's guilt. #G2Great
Agreed. When I want to look beyond the line and at the long haul, which takes a while to reach, but the proficiency goal is a short sprint. I'd rather walk and be able to go three more miles with a kid than get to a finish line quickly. #g2great
I hear you, @tomlittogether...

Q2: Taking the fun out of education & losing T autonomy has impeded T and S relationships! When all the focus is on rigor- T/S relationships suffer. The whole child must be recognized, validated, and understood. Not just the #data attached to their name #G2Great#WeGotThis
A2-Some barriers are a system of labels, rigid schedules, emphasis on standardized testing, fixed mindsets, seeing children through a deficit lens. #G2great#WeGotThis
A2: Oh, man, the list is long. Curricular mandates, disparities between my philosophy & that of previous teachers (Ss learned to value compliance), trauma, the need to teach replacement behaviors with so little time in the day, the sheer number of kids I teach (31!). . . #g2great
A2-Some barriers are a system of labels, rigid schedules, emphasis on standardized testing, fixed mindsets, seeing children through a deficit lens. #G2great#WeGotThis
A2 - I would add the constraints of underfunded schools. 6 periods a day. 179 amazing adolescents every day that I can't give enough time to. Mental, emotional, and second hand trauma flavor exhaustion comes into play too. #G2Great
A3. Ask WHY? Why this rule?
Why this way?
HOW: How does it help Ss? (Is it for convenience of adults?)
WHO: Who created rule? Who sustains rule?
WHAT IF: We try a pilot?
We collect data on "x's" effects?
Goal:compromise so Ss get needs met & then advocate for selves!
#G2Great
Maybe my rebellious side mixed with my pleaser side... but I try to "inform" people of my idea/intent and share my perspective- without asking for "permission" - this has a pretty good track record for me! #G2Great
I love this! At a conference I was listening to teachers talking about how every teacher has to be on the same reading passage on the same day, moving at the same pace. Where’s the room to incorporate teacher autonomy in teaching? Where’s the room for student choice? #G2Great
MAJOR barrier Andy, but I love the way that Cornelius describes doing the THING and collecting the data to show what didn’t work - and the new THING to show what did. Hard to argue with evidence #G2Great
A2 part 2: Overload of assessments encroaching on time for relationship building & high quality instruction. Also swimming in data & no time to effectively analyze it to be benefit Ss. #g2great
A2 I want to “fix” problems Ts face in schools in my work and yet I know that there’s only so much I can do. I’m saddened when politics & mandates leave little room for teacher decision making and this new reality causes many sleepless nights. #G2Great#WeGotThis
A3. I am working with my Ts and P colleagues to reimagine how we connect PD with evaluation system, to make it all cohesive, not just more and more hoops to jump thru. #G2Great@MisterMinor
Q2: Taking the fun out of education & losing T autonomy has impeded T and S relationships! When all the focus is on rigor- T/S relationships suffer. The whole child must be recognized, validated, and understood. Not just the #data attached to their name #G2Great#WeGotThis
A3 I believe we CAN find a middle ground if we’re willing to explore it. This begins with learning to pick our battles and standing up for what we believe our children deserve most. We cannot compromise on that point! #G2Great#WeGotThis
It is so true. And I am so at peace and happy when I just am truly in the moment. I should learn to trust that even more. It’s hard as a teacher of young children to not always be thinking of the next lesson but sitting with them in the now is edifying.#g2great
A2 cont.: Fear gets in the way much of the time. Be your authentic self and let students witness what it is to love literacy with an open heart and mind. They will follow your lead, whatever that may be. Lead with curiosity and a growth mindset. #G2Great
A2: Perfectly said. I feel in a constant tug of war and it's exhausting. There is so much knowledge to value and yet it feels like the right path is always a mirage. #G2Great
A3 Working towards a grading system that’s proficiency-based & focuses on giving Ss real, useful feedback. Communication has been key. With students, parents, & other teachers who are more skeptical. My admins are super supportive, which has been amazing too! #G2Great
A2: The barriers are our own stories, school stories, false narratives... those we are expected to believe, like "we are heroes." I've always hated hearing that. I'm no hero. I work hard, screw up, and try again. We can begin by being honest about what we do. #G2Great
A3 I believe we CAN find a middle ground if we’re willing to explore it. This begins with learning to pick our battles and standing up for what we believe our children deserve most. We cannot compromise on that point! #G2Great#WeGotThis
Thinking about the barriers that many of you named reminds me again of all that we have in common... Twitter is good for not feeling alone, but I want more than that. I'm already thinking about how we use opportunities like this to coordinate efforts to free ourselves. #G2Great
This is so true. I sometimes get waves of fear that wash over me for no good reason - and it's only by going back to my love of literacy and most importantly sharing that love, that it subsides. #G2Great
A3 I am trying to find more community involvement in our school. I want to keep breaking down school walls and bring the world in. We do have a language barrier; there are also limited resources to get out of our building to live more authentic experiences. #g2great
A3: Flexible leadership is key. I am SO blessed to work for leaders who seek teacher input and work to engage teacher agency and decision making #g2great
A3 I haven't yet done this but I'm thinking about how powerful it would be to have students convince stakeholders to reimagine the "rules" that aren't working #G2Great#LitBankStreet
What I’d love more support in is chatting with other educators who have already made the switch & can share the experience/how they did it. Especially in a reporting system that isn’t set up that way. #G2Great#sblchat
A3: I think asking questions (respectfully) about the intention and purpose behind things. What’s the why and how is it meaningful for The ones who really matter- the Ss #g2great
#G2Great A3. To increase stakeholder support, I pivot, am flexible, and positive. Complaints are solutions awaiting a positive, productive resolution. I ask questions, reflect, and seek uncommon alliances to develop learning capacity.
A3 Sadly scripted programs have come back into fashion (as baffling as that seems to me). While teachers can’t stop those highly questionable decision they can find a way to do what is required without losing themselves and their kids in the mix. #G2Great#WeGotThis
A4: I'm sustaining my own learning through my PLN, through my professional organizations, and by starting a mastermind with @participate - PM me if you're interested in joining! #ilachat#g2great
A3 - I try to share resources I know will interest stakeholders as often as possible. I figure out what they're passionate about and recommend people, articles, books, etc so that we can launch into a discussion from nerdiness and deep thinking and not frustration. #G2Great
It is so true. And I am so at peace and happy when I just am truly in the moment. I should learn to trust that even more. It’s hard as a teacher of young children to not always be thinking of the next lesson but sitting with them in the now is edifying.#g2great
The over emphasis on behavior and "rules" can be take over a school. I like what @MisterMinor has said about listening to his students and recognizing their loyalty. I'm going to talk with my colleagues about this! #G2Great
A3: I fight for reading time for my students. There is nothing more important that I can do for the reading lives of my students that give them really great, diverse books. Lifelong readers come before compliant readers. #G2Great
A3. #Isolation is dangerous. A P colleague of mine was just talking about getting burned out on discipline and management, not enough learning for herself. The answer: walk away sometimes and just learn! #G2Great@MisterMinor
A3: Just shared similar idea: I often actively learned, presented an idea, shared why it was important and interesting to try (yes, at times this was all unsolicited and perhaps not nec wanted) - and then went for it! #G2Great
A3 The “rules” are hurting us all because too many people hold the checkbook without the benefit of knowledge. Until we are willing to have honest conversations about what why how and IF, well then little will change. #G2Great#WeGotThis
#G2Great A2 I need to jump off this teacher-controlled cliff I am on. My kids r
most engaged and joyful when I suggest, nudge, introduce...and then get out of the way. I need to know it's OK to do what my heart is screaming to do,& that it's OK to take the time to get it right
This is the case in too many places, @Mrs_Giordano. You are so right here.
What tools, resources, insights would you need from people like me to make things better for you and for kids? #G2Great
I love this! At a conference I was listening to teachers talking about how every teacher has to be on the same reading passage on the same day, moving at the same pace. Where’s the room to incorporate teacher autonomy in teaching? Where’s the room for student choice? #G2Great
A3: I think also pushing and asking "what's the reasoning behind this?" or "can you show me the research that supports this?" is a great way to remind everyone we must do better rather than create reactionary/oppressive/culture killing "rules". #G2Great
I can’t help but think that this kind of collective joyful gathering of minds and&hearts will give us the internal impetus we need to move toward change Cornelius. Each time I open twitter I feel such gratitude to be surrounded by dedicated others commute to kids too! #G2Great
Thinking about the barriers that many of you named reminds me again of all that we have in common... Twitter is good for not feeling alone, but I want more than that. I'm already thinking about how we use opportunities like this to coordinate efforts to free ourselves. #G2Great
A4 Mandate: co-Teachers must engage in parallel teaching throughout the day. Undoing the mandate: Worked with T's to generate simultaneous small group instruction; blogged about the research behind changing up co-teaching models. #g2great
This is the case in too many places, @Mrs_Giordano. You are so right here.

A3: Love what @MisterMinor writes about action research. When we try something and it works, rules tend to dissipate. Focus on learning and joy. #g2great
A3: I have found that doing my job well, no matter HOW I do it, is my greatest defense against nonsensical mandates. Conducting action research in your classroom is the best line of defense. Data speaks. Being knowledgeable & being able to defend your pedagogy does, too. #G2Great

I’m fortunate to be in a district that is highly supportive of teacher autonomy, but I wonder... how we can show other stakeholders who haven’t made this shift just how beneficial it is to offer teachers, professionals, the room to make choices for their kids? #G2Great
A3: Love what @MisterMinor writes about action research. When we try something and it works, rules tend to dissipate. Focus on learning and joy. #g2great
Yes Melanie, The alternative is throwing our hands up in the air but Cornelius shows us that you CAN make those little day to day changes that become BIG changes over time. #G2Great
A3: Love what @MisterMinor writes about action research. When we try something and it works, rules tend to dissipate. Focus on learning and joy. #g2great
A3: We have worked to create a flexible curriculum that offers plenty of choice for Ss and Ts. A concept guided curriculum instead of a content driven curriculum allows for creativity, risk-taking, and collaboration. #G2Great
A4 I am trying hard to understand when things are going awry. That’s definitely not easy when passions about teaching can get in the way (and sometimes mine do). MOST teachers have good intentions even if the approach is questionable. #G2Great#WeGotThis
A4 I'm with @franmcveigh on this one. Read... all the time. Constantly. Share resources with fellow teachers. Hang out on Twitter #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A3: I think it's best to discuss everything respectfully with stakeholders that seem antiquated/ineffective. In addition, bring a solution for existing problems so they know that you were prepared for their rebuttal.

A4: My fav learning is from my peers and students: visiting classrooms: observing, collaborating, and working alongside so many teachers & students- I learn TONS every. single. time. I get this opportunity. #G2Great
I couldn’t ❤️ this enough times if I tried Aeriale. There may be many things we can’t change.. but "the man in the mirror” sure seems like the perfect starting point! #G2Great

A3: Thinking outside the box, outside of school, & beyond has help me to reimagine change. What I need is to find those willing to step out of that box with me and simply try. Trying different is and should be a daily practice. #G2Great
A4 Networking & making connections!
Finding opportunities that speak to me & will work for my kids.
Continuous spaces to chat with other educators & opportunities to share our stories, resources, ideas, etc.

It takes all the personality, creativity, innovation and joy from teaching. The loss in what teachers could have brought to the classroom is never considered. Tragic. #g2great#WeGotThis
A4: Instead of looking for the perfect lesson I now understand that simple replicable classes that shift the cognitive load onto the Ss & then give them the time & space to struggle, learn, & grow are more important. There's a lot of blank space on my plans for a reason. #g2great
A3: We have worked to create a flexible curriculum that offers plenty of choice for Ss and Ts. A concept guided curriculum instead of a content driven curriculum allows for creativity, risk-taking, and collaboration. #G2Great
A4 Our students are an amazing resource too. No one gives feedback like a bored third grader. I ask them if they were interested in the lesson and what they wish were different. #G2Great
Q1: I want to make sure that I deliver a consistent classroom environment where ALL students have access to challenges, supports and materials to grow as an individual, a learner and a member of the community #G2great
A4: ask for help, keep questioning, keep learning and sharing knowledge together. I need to feel like my opinion as an expert is valued as much as numerical data. #g2great
A3: Love what @MisterMinor writes about action research. When we try something and it works, rules tend to dissipate. Focus on learning and joy. #g2great
a4 I work really hard to model how to embrace a mess I've created in a classroom. Because a mess is usually the first part of major growth. and if more of us embrace the clunkiness of trying a new thing, others will be inclined to do so as well. #g2great
A4. Finding like-minded educators within and outside your school. Venting, collaborating, listening. Finding bridge builders and problem solvers makes anything feel possible. #g2great
I'm still thinking lots about question 3. Please, friends, remember that no matter where you are in your journey, that you are the expert in your classroom... That does not mean that we know everything, but it does mean that we are expertly positioned to find answers. #G2Great
Co-sign 100%. Although, I think this is rough when there isn't necessarily causal relationship between your classroom and the "right kind of data" for gatekeepers at schools/in education. #G2Great
A4: Finding other Ts who match my intellectual curiosity level to brainstorm with, experiment with, read & discuss professional reading with so that I continue to grow & deepen my learning. #g2great
A3: I’ve really tried to get stakeholders to unpack the language of education—teaching the whole child, fidelity, etc? What do those words mean? Punitive measures/grading? Tracking? Scripted curriculum? If I disrupt to advocate for students, is that acceptable? #G2Great
A4 I believe that respectful conversations should be at the center of all we do. And I’m not talking about conversation with an outcome but time to wade thoughtfully in the curiosity pool where we can explore what inspires and entices us. #G2Great#WeGotThis
Yes! I learned so much from the 5th grade teacher next door by just wandering into her room and asking... hey, do you have a way of teaching this skill? #G2Great
You’re so right on. I often consider why teachers aren’t viewed as the professionals we are, who have the expertise and ability to create amazing learning experiences for our students. #G2Great
A4: This year I have made it a point to go to state conferences and even presenting at one. To grow, I need to leave the comfort of my county and talk to other passionate teachers. Looking forward to national conferences next year! #G2Great
A4: Inviting stakeholders into your classroom to demonstrate, collaborate, and innovate builds trust. Share the wonderful ways in which you reach students every day. #G2Great
A4 I have been growing my learning with my PLN. I have searched for opportunities of learning close and have been trying to get permission/support to attend sessions. My goal next year is to grow with @ncte Local isolation is hard, my virtual family helps. #g2great
A4. Always remind teachers that championship sports team don’t remain champions by relying on what worked years ago. Players/teachers constantly need to work on specific skills and the coach/admin has to get the right players on the right team. #G2Great
So true! Hard to plan a week out since so much of what we do depends on the learners in front of us. Good teaching is responsive and NOT a script. #g2great
A4. Reading and talking to those who DON'T share your ideas is also helpful. It can help form you by strengthening your beliefs thru contrast or shaping them. #G2Great@MisterMinor
A4: We are working on SO many things all at once, that it is hard. I am trying hard to teach UOS, with student-centered inquiry in conceptually relevant ways while providing feedback on the co-created criteria during conferring while teaching content for THE tests?? #g2great
A4 Talking with others who have a different experience from our own can help stretch the work we do. Change can be uncomfortable, but these are the places where the best learning can happen #g2great
I'm chatting from what would normally be a nail biting turbulent flight. Yet, the love and devotion emanating from my computer screen jumping up and down on my lap just feels like loving arms all around me. See what you do to us Cornelius! ❤️ #G2Great
A4: Candid response--I want to share, talk, fail, learn, and walk together with my colleagues in my school but I can't ever get much traction. Always grateful to have my #TWTBlog community, Twitter, and edu networks that help me grow. #G2Great
A4 I worry when grade level meetings are all about picking the page, the form, or the activity rather than having real dialogue about real issues. That requires less “What will we DO” and far more “Why are we really here?” #G2Great#WeGotThis
I'm also thinking that we need more than just professional partners who help us to "learn". We need professional partners who help us to change the things that are not working for kids.
One person can be a visionary, but two+ people together are a revolution. #G2Great
A4: I need to read current research. The temptation after grad school is to not go in search of research; instead, we need to seek out new data and new ways to reach our students. #G2Great
I'm also thinking that we need more than just professional partners who help us to "learn". We need professional partners who help us to change the things that are not working for kids.

I continue to attend things like #ncte18 to keep learning! Love being in classrooms and seeing how students respond so I can tell the next teacher I work with what it really looks like and what we might change or try differently! #g2great
What you are saying here resonates with me, @Betsy_writes. What prevents traction.
What more can we, the people in your networks, do to sustain you? #G2Great
A4: Candid response--I want to share, talk, fail, learn, and walk together with my colleagues in my school but I can't ever get much traction. Always grateful to have my #TWTBlog community, Twitter, and edu networks that help me grow. #G2Great
A4: Fortunate to work in a college town. Building bridges with their English department has been amazing. We help each other grow and share practices. Connect with local Art Reach programs, libraries, and centers for art. Invite local authors in to share their process. #G2Great
#G2Great A4. To sustain our development, I look towards mindfulness and empathy with view of goal being attempted within a given context. It's like a framework is needed sometime to paint the picture that leads to achievement
A5 I wish I knew how to help educators believe that mandates and doing the right thing for kids can reside in peaceful harmony. Joyful literacy is achievable and it’s our responsibility to bring it to life in the company of kids #G2Great#WeGotThis
A4- I step out of my comfort zone everyday. Each small success gives me more confidence each fail gives me pause to reflect and do better next time. I lean on #G2great friends, colleagues, amazing educators I've connected with on twitter. #g2great
I find it's helpful to connect w/other like-minded educators who share my passion for literacy & teaching, but I'm learning to also find ways to connect with those who have different viewpoints and perspectives than me because that can push my thinking as well. #g2great
A4: We are working on SO many things all at once, that it is hard. I am trying hard to teach UOS, with student-centered inquiry in conceptually relevant ways while providing feedback on the co-created criteria during conferring while teaching content for THE tests?? #g2great
Some days leave you wondering if you know what you are doing. And then I look out at the kids after a meeting that questions my intelligence about my kids and remember, I know b/c I'm there and no one is going to stop me from continuing to learn about them. #G2Great
I'm still thinking lots about question 3. Please, friends, remember that no matter where you are in your journey, that you are the expert in your classroom... That does not mean that we know everything, but it does mean that we are expertly positioned to find answers. #G2Great
A5: how do I continue to make connections with people? Love twitter chats! Want to keep going to @ncte conference each year! Maybe I should make some more videos like the one modeled from @DrMaryHoward work that @franmcveigh made me do! Somebody challenge me! #g2great
Can I just say that @Betsy_writes 's words (I get the written ones... #TWTBlog) have TONS of traction here in my mind and heart. I am so appreciative of all you put out there and share with us all. I have learned tons from you-even without ever meeting #G2Great

A4 - More opportunities to uplift teachers who are doing the work in schools. So often we look to outside sources or "experts" to fix problems or "train our teachers" when we have GREAT teachers in our buildings to learn from. We need to build trust in our profession. #G2Great
A5 I wish I knew how some teachers do it all! I’m just starting to get out of my comfort zone… presenting, writing, sharing, etc. How does one grow their network & really help make a wider impact on kids… on education as a whole? #g2great
A5 I wish I knew how to help teachers stand up to professional bullies (and yes, they do exist). I know so many wonderful teachers who are lonely in their own schools. I worry about that every single day. #G2Great#WeGotThis

A 4 Yes, I see teachers happy to use worksheets instead of authentic writing. If we deprive students of authenticity in reading and writing we prevent progress and growth! Need to care about our profession and children. #G2Great
A4 I'm working to be better at identifying biases I possess that hold others back. What do I believe that keeps me from celebrating, nudging, creating opportunities for Ts and Ss I support to flourish? Ts and Ss are only limited by my low expectations. Hate to admit... #G2Great
A4: It is a professional obligation for Ts to be in the driver’s seat of their own professional learning! It’s not enough to solely rely on your district. If you want to learn more about your Ss, & best instructional practices, ask a colleague, attend a conference, read! #G2Great
A5 How do you break a cycle of a dislike for reading and a quest to perform on a test in a High School English class? When students come disliking reading and sometimes not knowing how to at 15, how to you support & inspire them? #g2great
A 4 Yes, I see teachers happy to use worksheets instead of authentic writing. If we deprive students of authenticity in reading and writing we prevent progress and growth! Need to care about our profession and children. #G2Great
A4: We are all on a journey and we are all growing. I want stakeholders to feel welcome in my classroom. I also engage in conversations about teaching and living with people beyond the school. I want kids to have authentic audiences for their work. #G2Great

A5 I love, adore & believe in Ts to the core of my being. Their dedication to kids and commitment to this profession is our superpower at the most challenging time in our educational history. I believe Cornelius when he says WE GOT THIS! #G2Great#WeGotThis
Well thanks for that Pam. I might be feeling a bit tired and defeated today. I ended the day reminding myself I am in the best position to help my Ss and that was what I needed to remember. And I needed air. :) #g2great

A5 Life really is short, I now attend weddings of former second grade Ss. This is what I advise people, have fun! Being a teacher can be fun! Remember to laugh. #G2Great
#G2Great A5. I think it's useful to keep in mind that being positive, in contact with others, and reflective can benefit personal and professional growth for you and others - be an architect with bridges and windows
When I say no to a thing in the context of my work at school, it is never a terminal “no”. It’s an invitational “no”.
I don’t want to end a conversation with my declaration. I want to invite more study... #g2great
As someone who is actively working on this and is so NOT an expert-I can share that practice is a great "answer." It gets easier... I am now starting to (on occasion) say a polite no without offering a long winded justification. Long road- slow progress, but worth it. #g2great
A4: The support I need is DISCOURSE. I need Ts in my building that I can speak to about problems I am having in the classroom-instructionally, so I can better meet the individual needs of my Ss. I need a TEAM. #G2Great#WeGotThis
A5: I wish I knew how to get more involved in @ncte national conference and other larger groups doing good work great work. I want to get involved, but don’t know how to take the next step. #G2Great
A5: Wish I knew how to help see themselves as authentic risk takers who are willing to try something without the fear of grades getting in the way. #G2Great
A5: I wish I knew about professional communities such as this one. I never heard about PLCs beyond my school and I never thought to look. It matters that we arrive though, & I’m so glad I did. This professional community encourages growth and reflection. #G2Great

I now have to say no. Last week I learned I can’t do everything, or else I’ll end up in the hospital, and that doesn’t help anyone. We need to take care of ourselves too. #G2Great
A2. Barriers? I think their are systemic ones that have to do with testing, mandates etc. But there is also fear of how colleagues perceive us and intractable fear to try new things. .@misterminor .@DrMaryHoward#G2Great
This is so real. I experienced this in my 1st year & it was debilitating. Eventually, I just had to switch schools. I wish I’d had someone instill some confidence & make me feel as though my voice was valued. Then I may have had the courage to stand up! #g2great
A6 This chat further confirmed what I’ve always known - that educators are amazing, caring and value their own learning. Almost 4 years of #G2Great JOY has shown me the value of a gathering space where our similarities AND differences are honored. #WeGotThis
A6 It's helpful to know that everyone in this chat seems to have something that they're working on, something that's challenging them, and something that they're doing really, really well #G2Great
I think that a teacher who enters the classroom EVERY day with that same spark of curiosity can ignore a FLAME that can never be extinguished! #G2Great

For the first 14 years of my career, "getting involved" meant helping the teacher next door.
This soon became the teacher down the hall, across town... on the other side of the world.
I believe that if we want to change the world, we start on our own imperfect corners. #G2Great

A5 I wish I knew the stories the teachers I work with tell themselves each day. What traumas and experiences are still lingering and running around getting in the way of possibility? I’m working on discovering more of my own. I want to help them tell a new story #G2great
Our pupils forget most of what we teach them. They will however remember us their teachers forever.lets be good and kind to them.A kind word can last a lifetime and I know
I see this even with 6th grade, and my best friend has been constantly reading mg & ya lit and then doing book talks. I’ve noticed that if I’m excited about the book it shines through, and that gets them excited too. #G2Great
I went through 7 years of this. When I finally got out I was able to find my #passion for teaching again. It's especially difficult when those bullies are the ones in a position of power. #G2Great
A6: There are many, many educators who are interested in working together to create revolutionary change. Find them on social media, collaborate, meet IRL, and invite local colleagues along. #G2Great
A4: Learning is an active process, therefore I am forever in the process of "becoming" more. My goals are moving targets. Working with non-profits, student-voice projects, and building culture have help my perspective. Ideal support-dist leaders vocal about change. #G2Great
A6: how about just from today? Check my twitter messages because @franmcveigh rocks at reminding me about chats she knows I’ll just love! She knows I don’t know time or date! #g2great
A6: I work in a district that values responsive teaching, learning, engagement, and joy in classrooms. We all need to communicate how important all that is! #g2great

A6 - I would love to answer these questions with my colleagues -they pushed me to do some deeper thinking/be a little more vulnerable on a Thursday night but also identified and connected with a lot of others. And we all could use more relational trust. #G2Great
Q5 I wish I knew I how we're going to turn this inclusion/equity thing around. When this white woman right here tries to have the convo, lots of folks go underground. Anybody got an encouraging word for us? Or an answer? #g2great
A6 It’s a reminder how much WE GOT THIS is needed. I love this book so much and know that it will invite powerful conversations in schools. Yes Cornelius… WE GOT THIS because we WANT THIS and we will DO THE WORK for this! #G2Great#WeGotThis
A6: Others matter in our personal journeys as professional. Be a gathering educator. Gather people to learn, to study, and to gain support and energyfrom one another. #G2Great
I couldn’t agree more!!! Students feed off of a teacher’s energy! You should have seen me skip from the office when a book order would come in! #g2great
a6: community is everything in the land of teaching and learning. Whether it be in the physical realm, or twitterland, we hold each other up, and help each other not to look down. #g2great
A6: Confirmation (Reconfirmation) - Educators are AWESOME and do crucially important work every day. Next step- continue to share this with friends, family, and those not in education. We need their support, too. #G2Great
A5: I wish I knew how to galvanize my colleagues. I wish I could inspire them to move beyond compliance. I wish I had the power to make them believe in themselves enough to always do what’s best for children—even when it means beating a new pathway! #G2Great
And so that's what we work on. It's possible. @MisterMinor 's book reminds us of the importance of listening and paying attention to what kids care about. Matters so so much. #g2great

I have always been a learner, however, at times I have been surrounded by others who are not. It is difficult to go against the grain even when you know you are right. #G2Great. #WeGotThis
A 5 it’s important to have conversations about giving students busy work that doesn’t advance their learning. It’s important for other teachers and students to know what you stand for. Be polite. Be firm. Be proud is choice reading and authentic writing. #G2Great
I am so sad to have to say this but REAL Mary has to let ROBO Mary replace me since the flight attendant is giving me “the look.” TY #G2Great friends for your dedication and TY Cornelius for showing us that WE GOT THIS! Sending so much love from this bumpy flight in the sky ❤️
A6 There are so many educators out there experiencing the same struggles & we can empower each other to go out and make real change! I’m feeling all kinds of fired up right now! #G2Great
I don’t know where to share this but I feel like this group might enjoy...my friend and I went to @IowaWBB game last night, watched them beat Iowa State...time-out- Sara tells me how much she LOVES @MichelleObama new book, she’s listening to the audio book! #g2great
A3. I had an ILT meeting today where I was accused of always wanting to do things differently and essentially told that as a new teacher, I spend too much time trying to change things That attitude is my barrier. .@misterminor .@DrMaryHoward#G2Great
Sometimes I think that its easy for people, like us, with good intentions to get stuck in our cycles of goodness... Reflection, though powerful, can sometimes stymie us. I am so with you on this.
My new formula is 75% do 25% reflect. I legit use a timer... #G2Great
A6 Well I’ve already started my NEXT by sharing Cornelius’ book everywhere I go. I think it’s one of those MUST HAVE books because of the conversations it can inspire everywhere, even where a WE GOT THIS spirit is wavering. #G2Great#WeGotThis
She didn’t do a report or multiple choice comprehension questions, we TALKED all about her reading and now I need to get the book! Audio books are reading, people should talk about what they read! Let’s be real with students! #g2great

A7 The words “we can’t do this alone” speak volumes. We have to find spaces where we can come together, in person or virtually to share our hopes and dreams for this profession and for the children we want to lift to the great heights of wonderful. #G2Great#WeGotThis
A7 I would happily partner with upper elementary teachers who are trying to squeeze more authentic reading and writing into their students' days @MisterMinor#G2Great
A5: I wish I knew how to tell my story in a way to help other educators see the potential in EVERY child that walks through their classroom door-even the way who doesn't appear to care. Is it strange that I wish I knew how to teach adults #empathy? #G2Great#WeGotThis
A4. I am really lucky because I love learning new things and I am always learning along with my students. I worked at school that was about learning together and I think that really helped fuel my willingness to be wrong .@misterminor .@DrMaryHoward#G2Great
No easy answers. However, if school leaders hold the cards. If self selected one independent reading and writing workshop are important, then the principal will keep convis going, provide book and article studies. #G2Great
Master P was still on the airwaves when I was a new teacher.
He did this thing where he talked publicly about doing the things that others imagined impossible.
Action research has been my ally. I stopped asking & started doing the thing, collecting the data... #G2Great

A7 I’d love to partner up with teachers working in proficiency-based reporting systems to get some ideas & guidance on how to make this switch… especially those tied to traditional letter grades/percents. How does that work? How did you do it? #G2Great
A7: I really just get fueled by conversation. I learn so much when I listen, share, & write. I would love to have more convos. I actually asked people to do a hangout with me for a giveaway on my post at #TWTBlog today. Dialogue is everything! #G2great
@MisterMinor I would love to talk Ted Talks. I couldn’t make your NCTE session and have an idea but looking for advice from others. This goes to all A7 #g2great
A6- I'm even more on fire to change how we can operate within a system. I'm buying and giving copies of #WeGotThis to my staff. It starts with a teacher, a child, a classroom, a school, a community....#G2great

A5: I wish I knew that people were afraid to take a "radical idea" that works for children and share it with the staff or district representatives. If FEAR/FAILURE wasn't a factor "Oh, the places we could go" with the children we teach.

A7 My wish is for ALL Ts to be mindful of those in your school who are hanging on by a thread. Support them. Pat them on the back. Offer a kind word ( and a smile and hug wouldn’t hurt). Spread the We Got This mindset! #G2Great#WeGotThis
A7: I need help not hurting anyone before holiday break. My babies are wired and cray and I have to suppress my inner Madea all day long! Seriously, I’m exhausted. Anyone else? #G2Great

I experience this as well. Ts at my school have been there over 20 years and just do not want to change anything! I'm the #radical teacher that uses flexible seating and doesn't care if kids eat when hungry....etc, etc. #inserteyeroll It is their attitude, not yours! #G2Great

A7: I am a a good teacher, but I can't figure this out: I have to figure out how to follow students and my belief about the critical importance of student-centered learning and inquiry while meeting the mandates #g2great
A6: Educators both foreign and domestic have the same needs, desires, expectations for their students and its up to us to take stand and do what's right for kids by any means necessary to ensure equity/equality for them. I will rise up to the challenge!!

I'm not turning people away! :) Let's do this. Don't you just want to talk to people? I do! Everytime I do, I get excited, fueled, and flooded with ideas from all the greatness! #g2great
