Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
Katherine Ternes tuning in tonight! Christ the King's 3rd grade teacher in the @WichitaDiocese. Trying to read any of my books I have for fun would be awesome! #ksedchat
Hey all! Nathan here, rocking it in 4th grade @CooperEagles260 one new book I plan to read this year is #StartRightNow. Have it in my school bag, with goals of reading a few chapters a week. #KSEDchat
Hi friends! Heather 6th grade from Neodesha! I always have a long list of books in my queue! I’m currently reading Becoming by Michelle Obama and next up is Grace not Perfection by Emily Ley! #currentlyreading#ksedchat
Nicole here, 7/8 ELA in Gardner. I’m reading the Maze Runner series right now. Hoping to read Catching Fire & Mockingjay again soon! Just finished HG with 7th grade before break. #iloveYAlit#ksedchat
Hey y'all! Miss B here! I teach 5th grade at Northeast Elementary, in Arma, KS!
My New Year goal is to finish "Be Real" by @TaraMartinEDU this month for my teaching health, & start "It's Not Supposed To Be This Way" by @LysaTerKeurst for my spiritual/emotional health!
#ksedchat
A1: Hi! I'm Beth of @go2Science. Maine kinder teacher for 25 years turned world adventurer and nationwide k-2 teacher with lots of new friends in Andover KS. If you have not read https://t.co/u8thw7s6Xt yet, do! Looking for a great book to kick off 2019. #ksedchat
Good evening everyone. TJ Warsnak a social studies teacher from Halstead HS. I usually read as things come up, so no plans, though this time of year I always reread Ben Hogan's Five lessons. #ksedchat
A1. Carrie Horn, usd 308, Hutchinson, Graber Elementary, First Grade teacher. I don't have any great books in my queue. I'm actually looking through all the responses to see what I could jump on and read! I am still trying to read Wild Card.
#ksedchat
A2: I think that being set in your ways means not having that growth mindset. Tradition in good, but even traditions get changed a little from year to year depending on who is there. #ksedchat
A2 after reading this question, I think back to the growth vs. fixed mindsets. One allows for new innovations that can support traditions, while the other is set in stone against change. #KSEDchat
A1: Set in your ways implies an unwillingness to change when evidence shows it could be productive. I see traditions as things that provide continued value and return for all parties. #ksedchat
A2: Tradition, I feel is something with meaning attached to it. Set in you ways, to me, means "it's always been done that way" or it's just easier. With the latter, I don't feel one is challenging themselves or their students. #ksedchat
A2: Tradition, I feel is something with meaning attached to it. Set in you ways, to me, means "it's always been done that way" or it's just easier. With the latter, I don't feel one is challenging themselves or their students. #ksedchat
A1) Will Dunn; HS Math; Tonganoxie, KS.
Do, do, do read the memoir of the ever graceful and purely divine former First Lady, @MichelleObama, “Becoming”.
It invokes the kind of inepistikn and proportion we should all hope to instill in our students.
#ksedchat
A2: Tradition is something that is valued and has importance. set in your ways is not adapting to change to and not willing to try new things. #ksedchat
A2. What's tradition is determined by those making decisions, those with the power or influence. Being set in your own ways is based on the individual. #ksedchat
A2: “Set in your ways” is often the easy way. It’s fixed not growth mindset. Traditions have a place, but always evaluate the why and is the tradition still important and to who? #ksedchat
A2) Tradition honors the good and standard that built the foundation for today. “Stuck in our ways” is blind to past and present and future. Tradition reflects values. Rut reflects...well laziness. Or at least an unenterprising spirit. #ksedchat
A2: Tradition, I feel is something with meaning attached to it. Set in you ways, to me, means "it's always been done that way" or it's just easier. With the latter, I don't feel one is challenging themselves or their students. #ksedchat
A3 as a 4th grade team we are overhauling our math instruction time. With that we have ability grouped students, and will rotate through "center" like instructions to further differentiate the lessons to meet our students where they need it most #KSEDchat
A2: To me, tradition is about HONOR... Honoring memory. Honoring success. Honoring culture... Etc. "Stuck in Your Ways" isn't about honor, it's about pride, and the fear of breaking out of your comfort zone...
Tradition can bring unity, stuck in your ways can divide. #ksedchat
You took the words out of my mouth. I JUST told someone yesterday, we should always ask, why are we doing this? What will be gained? What will be lost? WHY is so important #ksedchat
A3: I like to have a framework and the storybooks to use planned out at least two weeks in advance, then I fill in the gaps. I have plans done for the next two weeks and laid out through the end of the month. #ksedchat
A3: Google Forms helps me collect so much data from my students every day. I have an open form that students can tell me how they are feeling and it has been great for building relationships with almost zero effort from me. #ksedchat
A3 I am putting more weight into letting students develop their own paths of learning. My hope in Social Studies is that students will dive deeper into their learning and be motivated to find new insights. It's new for me but worth the risk. #ksedchat
I’ve fully embraced google classroom which has saved me time. We are also working on really vertically aligning our ELA curriculum, which will allow us to work smarter! #ksedchat
@snordenWSUproud A3: Knowing that I am most productive in early hours Of day, I’m mindful in planning uninterrupted time away from my phone/social media to check daily tasks from my list! It took me years to recognize that I can double productivity during early hours! #KSedchat
A3: In December I started a strategic plan that includes gratitude, top 3 items for the day, a scheduled leave time, and a plan for three classroom observations each day. I’ve carried it into January. @PrincipalCenter#ksedchat
A3: Got a new seating chart that has my desks in a U-shape. My students come to the carpet for instructional time, and then are at their desks for work time. Also, worked with my principal on my classroom expectations. #ksedchat
A3) The easiest way to work smarter, not harder is to lean on your PLN and "borrow" the awesome ideas they are using daily in their classrooms and schools. #PrincipalsInAction#ksedchat
A3: I'm learning efficiencies all the time. If you teach pk-2 I've got your back! We can help you do all that transformational stuff and still have time for life beyond school! @go2Science#ksedchat
A1: Drea Finley, joining a little late, 3rd grade from Basehor Intermediate. I am not sure about a new book, I will look for lots of ideas from you all! #ksedchat
A3) This holds for math, but it’s certainly true for any content area based in theory- the #thinkingclassroom framework for content delivery is worth a look. Increases engagement, highlights student thinking, and is fun! Make your minutes go farther. @thinkingclssrms#ksedchat
A3: I don't know if I'll ever get this one figured out. I actually don't mind working late. The kids are in bed so it's easier to focus. I was up at school until 10:45 last night, but it's my routine and it works. I just enjoy the breaks more. #ksedchat
A3: I think it's SO easy for me to ask, "What is a realistic expectation for my students?" but SO hard for me to do the same for myself...
I think being efficient and setting DAILY reasonable goals that can be ACHIEVED and MEASURED will help me succeed this year!
#ksedchat
A3: As my school is going through the Redesign process, one of the things I really like is that the burden is spread out across all staff members. Everyone joins a team and participates. When everyone pitches in, the results are so much better. #ksedchat
A3: I am eager to give more time for peer tutoring. I want to give struggling math students opportunities to see success in themselves by sharing with other Ss! #ksedchat
A2. I think that traditions evolve over time, waking our feelings of family and history while changing to meet our evolving needs. My family is currently building new traditions and it is fun to see the open possibilities for our family's future! #ksedchat
A4: The other day I saw another educator on Twitter say, "Instead of asking 'Are there any questions' after instructing a topic, to ask, 'What questions do you have for me at this point?'
I am changing my WORDING to help my students TAKE CHANCES!
#ksedchat
You can pop over to https://t.co/AYnKIwo2Lr for a free trial. I'm happy to set up a video call to get you off and running if you want to join our research adventure. We start a new mission in the morning! #ksedchat
A4 I plan to help "that kid" with social-emotional communication. We use the Zones of Regulation as a morning & afternoon check-in. I plan to have a class meeting on empathy, in which we dive into situations given in 2nd step, and try to empathize with the characters #KSEDchat
A4: One of my favorite methods is to reach out to that student at least five positive times a day, everyday. Eventually you start to see that impact. Even if this is academic, find their small successes to celebrate, it will make all the difference. #ksedchat
A4: LET IT GO! I’m working on not taking things personally. The behavior is not about me. Also, just loving my HS kids through “it”, whatever “it” is at the time! #ksedchat
Q4. At the secondary level, I reach out to other teachers and identify somebody who is connecting with the student. Many times, they can give me advice on how to approach that kiddo. #ksedchat
A4: My school has set aside time for mentorsip with our students. This semester we are pulling groups. Excited to further my realtionship with my students and help them further their relationship with their peers. #ksedchat
A4: This year I've partnered with some older students to have them mentor student writers. They are so much more engaged when the advice is coming from another student. #ksedchat
@snordenWSUproud A4 - It’s like a focused puzzle. What makes he/she smile? What hidden talent do they possess that can utilized? I’m relentless in proving how much I care. I make sure to find them outside of the classroom to connect with. Relationship. Nothing new. #KSedchat
A4: My 6th Grade Team stopped our spelling curriculum. Yes, it’s important to spell; but a lot of the students were getting zero learning from it so we are trying to approach ELA as a whole and focus on writing in context and putting the spelling books on the shelf. #ksedchat
A4: My new approach is my old approach. Identify that Ss passion and teach through that passion. Works like a charm and I've learned soooo many new things that way! #ksedchat
A4: Relationships. I work to know what will work for each child. Depending on which “zone” they are in I do my best to support him/her. We are responsive and know our approach works for ALL. #ksedchat
We did an activity where we took a chart paper and marked the Ts who felt like they had a connection with each S. Opened our eyes! Probably need to do it again! #ksedchat#usd303
2 minute casual student led conversations for 10 straight days. Simple conversations about them, their likes, their weekend, what's going on in their life, what they want to talk about. Great way to build relationships before you have to have the tough conversation. #ksedchat
A5 #ksedchat Listen intently to them, use their name frequently and talk to them - let them know you are there for them by taking the time to truly listen - when you listen they know you care
A5 we often take an unusual approach to the same concepts, and have turned many skills into a game or hands on activity. I am constantly looking for ways to make learning fun again. This strategy keeps all my Ss engaged and excited to learn each day. #KSEDchat
A5: I created a way for us to graph our progress through the multiplication facts as a class as opposed to individually. I am hoping this switch up will allow personal goals to combine with class support and motivation. #ksedchat
Need help with this one!! I decided to take 2-3 min each day where we stand in a circle, and answer a “get to know you” question with my sophomores. I ❤️ morning meeting at the elem level and can NOT figure out how to get it in my 45 min HS classes. #ksedchat
A5: New way: Hmmm? Well, I'm required to use Conscious Discipline so I'm using more tools from that method as I learn and research how they tied in with trauma. #ksedchat
Well, #ksedchat. I had a incredible day working with the awesome @pitscoed crew and the #PitscoTag team. I am pooped and heading to bed!
Thank you @snordenWSUproud for kicking off 2019!
Have a great week everyone!
A4 #ksedchat A hard to reach student needs a gentle approach- I usually ask them about their day, have them help me in class and just try and make any connection I can by knowing their interests
A5: I hope I motivate and encourage ALL students through conversations, being present in classrooms, present in activities outside of school, and listening to staff share about students. #ksedchat
A3 #ksedchat I never grade at home. I try and grade during planning and I get lessons prepped and ready in advance- copies in advance so I can focus on the magic of teaching
A5: I created a new incentive for our classroom. I've called it the Miss B 5in5 Challenge! Students have 5 months to finish 5 of these books! Those that do, get to attend our VIP party! Some other KS T's even saw it, & are starting it in their rooms as well!
#ksedchat
A5: I started using restorative circle/ morning meetings after break and have been loving it. I also have all of my students tell me one good thing that happened during the day as we are lining up to leave for the day. #ksedchat
A5: I connect with students by being real and taking risks! I connect and engage with awesome content. Can't wait to show them this tiny joey!!! #ksedchat
A2 #ksedchat Traditions are well-integrates and appreciated tools and strategies- we inherit most of them because they re effective but when they need updating - they need updating and being unwilling to do so is stuck in your ways- things are always evolving and traditions do to
A5) I went standards based learning (#sblchat). No more points, credit, or percents. It’s all about showing what you know, getting the feedback, and trying to grow more. Trying to realign the focus and eliminate the distractions. #shiftthis#ksedchat
I’ve started saying this. The difference is amazing! Even if they don’t have any questions, it’s incredible to watch them think hard to try to come up with one. #ksedchat
A6) Self-serving, but I started a chat: #ksmathed. It’s for math teachers in Kansas, though often approachable to any teacher.
We mimic this chat for obvious reasons, and this chat was the inspiration.
We chat 2nd/4th Tues of the month at 8pm central. (Tomorrow!)
#ksedchat
A3. Working smarter not harder is not my strength. Two things to keep in mind: I can get more done first thing in the day; and it doesn't matter how well planned it is if it's not good for kids, so focus on the best/most efficient way to engage students and do that. #ksedchat
A6 I think #PBLCHAT , #Teaching2030 , & #SPEDchat would be great ones for me to look into this upcoming year and next. But #KSEDchat will always be my first love!
A2 #ksedchat Traditions are well-integrated and appreciated tools and strategies- we inherit most of them because they re effective but when they need updating - they need updating and being unwilling to do so is stuck in your ways- things are always evolving and traditions do to
A4. I plan to try 2 X 10 strategy with a couple students, and to pray for them every night. I was taught that praying for someone may never change them, but it will change my perspective, which I desperately need. #ksedchat
#ksedchat#tlapdownunder is Sunday nights for #Melbourne teachers 8pm and that is Sunday 1am but if you have just made a night time cuppa come over and have a chat with yr aussie neighbours.
#mathconceptions is great too ( Australia time 1.30pm Tuesday but American based)
A7 as a New Years resolution, I have started a blog that will be a weekly (maybe every other day) reflection of the amazing things happening in our room. Check out my first post here: https://t.co/iBT3x52DAo#KSEDchat
It is awesome to connect with friends, no matter where they are!!! #ksedchat And, you never know who is up in the late hours and could make this chat. ;)

A7) Not possible. As @BillNye says, I’m an “everything, all at once” kind of person. Math Education deserves all the creativity, innovation, and ingenuity I can afford to give it. I relish my role in doing that. #ksedchat
A7: I'm a big fan of the One Word themes. This year my theme is stamina. It's not necessarily starting anything new, but sticking with and strengthening what I already do. #ksedchat
A5. Engaging all kids always comes back to building relationship with them. This is the time of year that we do research, and giving kids some freedom and choice keeps them engaged as well. #ksedchat
#ksedchat A7 Trying to put aside a block of time where the phone goes down and I am more in the moment. Let us say it is a work in progress yet it has meant more reading is happening! That and eating looking up as I walk. Seeing all sorts now.
A7: My one word is Be. As I seek to be intentional in this NEW year this includes my focus on students and staff. We all win when I am supporting each one where they are and where they want to go. #KSedchat
Me too!! I try to send Memes to cheer the staff on, as the year goes and to pump everyone up. However, I am afraid it gets annoying after a bit. #ksedchat#dhefamily
A7: My one word for this year is GROW. I want to grow the number of classrooms we connect through @go2Science so we can grow the goodness in the world. Please help by telling all the PK-2 Ts you know to head over to https://t.co/AYnKIwo2Lr join us! #ksedchat
Thank you SO much #ksedchat for a great night. A HUGE thank you to @R_CILR and for her help and collaboration to make this chat happen. ;) And always, hats off to @mrvesco.
HAPPY 2019 TO ALL!!
