#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
✨🍦Hey, #LearnLAP crew! I'm so excited to be hosting tonight with @teresagross625! @PaulSolarz is a brave man 😂!
I teach 7th grade ELA in Nebraska. I love making learning sparkle with hooks, room transformation, gamification, and all things EDtech, especially #EduGIFs!✨🍦
Hello from Rib Lake WI I teach 5th graders to be independent learners! It was a great start to our short week. No spring break at our school. We get Friday and Monday off. #LearnLAP
I’m Wendy. Teach 2nd in Houston. If you asked students, their parents, staff, my family and pretty much anyone that knows me and were only given one word to describe me - it would definitely be crazy - but in a good way! 😜 @ZambranosClass

Q1: How do you promote a supportive and collaborative culture amongst students?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
✨A1:TRUST & TEAMWORK! We need to create a foundation that can build success. Students need to feel comfortable in the environment to share, collaborate, and celebrate with their peers!✨
#LearnLAP
A1: Working with my hands on collaborative lessons with Ss. Have them work together solving problems and helping each other out. Creates a strong community #LearnLAP
A1 Have been using stations in class, mixing up groups and having Ss work together, definitely builds peer collab and leader skills, and through #pbl and sharing their work #learnlap

A1: We have learned about growth mindset and how we learn at different paces and in different ways. I also ask kids to be risk takers and try to foster an environment where it's okay to be wrong. #LearnLAP

Q1: How do you promote a supportive and collaborative culture amongst students?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
A1: #learnlap I am currently researching Hygge and how to incorporate it into my classroom. My kids come from very stressful homes and need a safe, accepting place. I hope it will help!
A1: I think it comes down to having students work together frequently, but beyond that students need understanding of standards and expectations so they can help each other effectively #LearnLAP
A1: In class, I give students opportunities to collaborate on answers before drawing equity sticks for students to respond. Students are placed in groups for activities and are encouraged to discuss. #learnlap

Q1: How do you promote a supportive and collaborative culture amongst students?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
A1 we work a lot in groups and students are encouragedto stick together while they work. We also set our focus on growth and learning. Students provide peer feedback thorough flows and grows. #LearnLAP

Q1: How do you promote a supportive and collaborative culture amongst students?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
A1. Set up norms to help everyone feel comfortable. Give everyone a voice! Tools like @Screencastify@flipgrid@socrative and @padlet help our students to find their voice! Even if they’re “quiet” #LearnLAP

Q1: How do you promote a supportive and collaborative culture amongst students?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
A1. Engage and empower Ss by creating a Ss centered classroom. Ss need to know that their voice is heard, it matters, and it makes a difference. We can’t do that if Ts do all the talking in the room #LearnLAP
A1 Give them the opportunity to provide peer feedback often while guiding them through the process. Scaffold that model into group work wheret hey can evaluate as a team and grow together. #learnlap
A1: Just like with other things, students need many opportunities to practice their collaboration skills. I started most of my lessons with a turn-talk/buddy talk to give students an opportunity to access and build on prior knowledge. #learnlap
A1: The supportive and collaborative culture comes from building community. From morning meetings, to working in different partnerships. It is really telling to watch my kids during free play time and watch if they are collaborating when it isn't directed by teacher #LearnLAP
A1 I do a lot of collaborative learning which tends to help, but I really want to dive more deeply into my students wanting to support each other. I can’t wait to hear the suggestions! #LearnLAP
A1 Group philosophy is part of all facets of learning No matter if it is in the formative sense, technical sense, or summative sense, Ss never are isolated Collaboration is expected & highly encouraged #LearnLAP
A1 - I start with day one collaborative and creative assignments. Letting students have choice within the classroom with who they work with and why. Sometimes I have to intervene but at this point in the year, student know the rules and get going pretty quickly. #learnlap
A1 I have decentralized my classroom. There is no "front". S tables are on all walls allowing for movement through all of the space. It has been a minor but huge change for me. #LearnLAP
A1- My Ss ask each other for help and offer to help each other. We are a family and our successes belong to us all. Ss talk about academic challenges in our RESET time and propose solutions. Ss often come to the classroom during lunch to help each other. #learnlap
A1: A lot of class culture comes from the words we use.
What are the phrases and sayings that students return to your room 10 years later still able to repeat?
That will be the best indicator of a collaborative team culture that you created! #LearnLap
A1: multiple opportunities for team building and class building. When students learn to trust one another, they will support each other through the highs and lows. #learnlap
In reply to
@KimSnodgrass, @teresagross625, @PaulSolarz
A1: Start by making sure a students success isn’t defined or measured by right and wrong alone. Once you establish a culture of exploring the learning kids will work with each other to grow learning. @MrBoguslvms@MrPhanLISD and @MrsKroenert are great at this. #LearnLAP
A1 From day 1, we sit and work in groups or pairs. I model and practice conversations, how to support each other, and problem solving. Always a work in progress. #LearnLAP
A1 I spend time at the beginning of the year focusing on how Science is meant to be collaborative. The success of another person does not make you less successful. Each person is in competition with themselves. #LearnLAP
A1 a big push for me has been to celebrate student strengths, making kids aware of their own strengths and each other’s allows for self awareness and advocacy which leads to highly productive collaboration @thrively is such a great tool #LearnLAP
#learnlap A1. September, Agreements were created by Ss for their best environment to learn. There's respect, sharing of work, getting feedback, working in teams, reflecting...
A1: The supportive and collaborative culture comes from building community. From morning meetings, to working in different partnerships. It is really telling to watch my kids during free play time and watch if they are collaborating when it isn't directed by teacher #LearnLAP
A1: I promote collaboration by encouraging Ss to work w/ea other. In the beginning it was fairly structured collaboration, but as Ss got better, a little more freedom.
#LearnLAP
A1 Each year my Ss are given a name to live up to. This year my 5th graders are the Luminaries. Everyone in our school knows and calls us the Luminaries. It helps build a special bond between all of my Ss. They have created a pledge and believe we have Luminary Power #LearnLAP

Q1: How do you promote a supportive and collaborative culture amongst students?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
A1: By emphasizing the importance of enjoying the journey...both the successful moments and the failures. Each moment plays a role in our learning. Also, by celebrating even the smallest examples of growth. #learnlap
A1: As adults, we can collaborate on pretty much anything. I try to do the same for my students. If desks are in rows, they are in groups so there are partners, but I like to keep them in groups and create tasks where students can bounce ideas off each other. #learnlap
A1: By giving Ts the flexibility to create a classroom culture where Ss can do the following: Try, Connect, Succeed, Fail, Learn, Get/Give Feedback, Repeat.
Our classrooms can either be like prison or like Google. The choice is ours! #LearnLAP
A1: We have to model what a supportive, collaborative environment looks like. Work with your students on projects, facilitate discussion and celebrate what they are doing. Share in blogs, on twitter in parent newsletters. #learnlap
A1: Build a classroom culture where students see learning as a process we work on together. Create the mentatlity of ownership in the classroom. #LearnLAP
A1 - Stress the inportance of making the class all about students. “Our mantras are: do great work for you, make the class your class and smile when you enter and leave. #LearnLAP
A1: I believe a supportive and collaborative culture comes from students feeling like they can contribute in the classroom without being fearful of judgement. #learnLAP
#learnlap It all comes down to a positive classroom community- a collaborative and growth oriented arena where success and solutions come from a group effort with some personal merit added in. Laughter, smiles & mindfulness added in and you have a supportive learning environment

Q1: How do you promote a supportive and collaborative culture amongst students?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
A1: When Ss buy into a student-led classroom, where collaboration and communication are emphasized, they begin focusing on the whole, not just the individual => true total team efforts #learnlap
A1. Working together w/ Ss in classroom to solve problems. Learning by doing and experimenting. If a Ss is having a prob., another S is free who is knowledgeable about the prob. to help one another and lead the way! Collaboraboration and teamwork and shring of ideas #learnlap
A1 - "Marble Theory" to level the playing field, Conflict Resolution Strategees to help kids handle their disagreements, Loads of opportunities to collaborate & lead each day, and a focus on improvement over grades & perfection! #LearnLAP
A1: I’ve facilitated a few district-wide challenges for a fact fluency program we use...it encourages classwide achievement rather than individual student achievement. #LearnLAP

Q2: How do you empower students to discover and grown their passions?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
A1: creating those environments where people feel comfortable talking and asking questions...greeting students and teachers as they come in each day...having conversations with parents and kids when they are arriving at school! #learnlap
A1 #learnlap I promote a culture of collaboration and reflection for my Ss not just with each other but with me. I ask for them to be self-advocates and to reflect not only on their growth but growth as a class and myself as an educator- I improve because of their honest critique
A1: Encourage ss to celebrate each other and model it by celebrating them and my colleagues. In whole group we celebrate with a quick class cheer. Praise ss when I see them helping each other, provide opportunities to work in groups, and use growth mindeset as support. #LearnLAP

Q1: How do you promote a supportive and collaborative culture amongst students?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
I usually take at least a month to get the full system down, but then we augment as we go along. I just added @flipgrid to the system and it went really smoothly. #learnlap
✨A2: THE POWER OF CHOICE! When students have the choice, the culture not only flourishes, but there is increased engagement & a sense of community is established because everyone in the classroom learns more about each other and their unique interests/passions.✨

Q2: Students can discover their passions through experimentation, research, and play! They should be encouraged to do all of these things in and out of the classroom. #learnLAP
A2: #learnlap I give time for students to reflect on how our learning impacts us on a personal level - HEART impacts. Many times students identify interests they did not know they had.
A2: This has been a shift for this year! It has been a gradual release because I needed to work on our comfortability, but Ss have more choice in my classroom. We use choices & quests to individualize the learning experiences for all. We still do class labs together. #LearnLAP

A2 Also by being open to Ss ideas, and providing choices for how to show learning, whether #edtech or no tech, and get them to share their story w/other Ss and educators #learnlap
A2 this is one I am working on. I am working on implementing my version of genius hour projects for my Civics class. Only change is it has to be service related. 20% of their year will be dedicated to their ideas. #LearnLAP
A2: How many of our students are struggling with self confidence?
Empowering students starts with one thing: Helping them see something in themselves that they cannot see.
Confidence goes a long way in creating that empowerment.
#LearnLap
A2: In past years when I was gust teaching I was good at disrupting the status quo in classroom assessments. I believe that demonstration of knowledge can be done in other ways than essays and PPTs. We rolled @WeVideo and @scratch out as options, in addition to others. #LearnLAP

Q2: How do you empower students to discover and grown their passions?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
A1: using @ClassDojo to keep track of student participation and setting a goal to participate and get 400 dojo points as a class to earn a taco 🌮party! #LearnLap
#learnlap A2 - I include a lot of choice in the assignments. They choose the content. They explore their sources. They build their own PLN in my classes (Something new that I am working on with them). Generally I like to coach rather than teach at all levels.
A1: Collaborative, supporting classrooms start with a positive class community built from positive relationships, morning meetings, sharing success and failure and celebrating both #LearnLAP
A1 - By having students always thinking about their role in our class. Never just about content, but rather a focus on kindness, empathy, respect, trust and happiness. #LearnLAP
A2: Students should have opportunities to explore passions thorough #geniushour or 20% time. This independence builds their character and can really give teachers insight not only into their interests but also how they learn #LearnLAP
A2 Try to give all Ss, no matter if they are reg ed, sped, ELL, a opportunity to lead group When Ss see they CAN lead they will follow their passions #LearnLAP
A2: Let them explore the resources around them and choose what they connect with to deepen their knowledge. For instance, in our poetry unit, I allow students several opportunities to choose the poems they would like to analyze and connect with. #learnlap
A2 we do a lot of proving their learning which allows them to take their interests and prove using that interest. ie....MineCraft, slowmotion movies, coding, web site building, @DoInkTweets green screens. #LearnLAP
A2: proving opportunity and choice in what students learn whether in the classroom or throughout the school in other ways ie clubs leadership, monitoring, student buddies etc #learnlap
A2: Students should have opportunities to explore passions thorough #geniushour or 20% time. This independence builds their character and can really give teachers insight not only into their interests but also how they learn #LearnLAP
A2: In history, I am trying to provide more choice in the classroom. My Menus give students several chances to pursue and express knowledge in their own way. Check out my latest blog on differentiation at https://t.co/DacioI4EWA#learnlap
A2: I like to give students the multiple intelligences assessment so they understand the type of learner they are. This way they better understand their own learning #LearnLap
A2: By providing lots of opportunities to try new things and make choices in the classroom and by supporting them outside of the classroom at games, recitals, plays, etc. #LearnLAP

#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
A2: I agree with so many... choice! Plus, opportunity! We invite Ss (high school) to meet with local professionals four times a year over breakfast to talk careers. So many "a-ha" moments come from simple conversations! #learnlap
A1: As adults, we can collaborate on pretty much anything. I try to do the same for my students. If desks are in rows, they are in groups so there are partners, but I like to keep them in groups and create tasks where students can bounce ideas off each other. #learnlap

A2 #learnlap Be proud of them- show it, breathe it, ooze it with action and attitude not just words. Show them every day how much you appreciate teaching them. This empowers them.
A2: I’m a big fan of #GeniusHour and #20PercentTime Whatever you call it...every student should have the time and encouragement to pursue an interest or passion! #learnlap

A2: I empower Ss with decent
"wait time". I've noticed in today's world ... allowing time to think doesn't always happen. If Ss are given time, they generally come up with SOMETHING - and then we work from there.
And when the "get it" it's even sweeter!!!
#LearnLAP
A2: I’m working to incorporate a genius hour set aside for student passion projects. I have to remind myself of the amazing learning that can take place and trust the students and the process! #LearnLAP
A2:
In teaching drama, I’m hoping acting is one of their passions. Every year I design more learning activities or the students who are writers, builders, designers, etc. The organizers are stage and production managers. #LearnLAP
A2 - Reflection, student choice and a willingness to always allow for risks. Students must also feel safe, welcome, happy and loved. Make the class a 2nd home and sometimes even a 1st for certain kids. #LearnLAP
A2. Empowerment grows out of engagement. Ss 1st have to want to learn and then decide what they learn. To do this we have to facilitate thinking and not just dispense content. Ss are naturally curious, we have to remind them to ask why? And how? Again #LearnLAP
A2: If you are going to empower Ss to pursue their passions, you have to first build relationships with Ss => know your Ss & their interests to best support them #learnlap
Environment is such a part of student confidence and engagement Those photos from my youth w/rows of chairs look down right silly today Get them comfortable #LearnLAP

Q3: How do you encourage peer support in your classroom/school?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
A1: Working with peers is an obvious answer- changing up learning communities according to different objectives & interests, so it becomes a truly collective environment (not just “group work”). Giving them a voice in the class schedule, building our calendar together. #learnlap

Q1: How do you promote a supportive and collaborative culture amongst students?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
A1: supportive comes from trusts collaborative is learning scenarios you can set up. Ts can create atmosphere and activities which promote both.
Here is collaboration across grades
#learnlap
A2 Yes by offering Extended Learning Opportunities as student tech support team or Library assistants with projects based on student interest. #LearnLAP
Exactly! I'm kind of like "House" in that I need to constantly spit ideas out until I finally come to one that seems right. I'm sure some of my students are that way, so when I can find opportunities for them to collaborate, I incorporate it! #LearnLAP
A2: This one is pretty easy because my kids have 40+ minutes of free play each day. Today a crew of kids started making comic books, last week it was crown building. I adjust what materials are out based on what they are into (more comic book paper tomorrow!) #LearnLAP
#learnlap A2- we are currently building Rubik’s cubes to display in the lunchroom that represent their passions tied to history with a global twist. We are taking a year long trip around the world following our passions to each continent🌍

Q3: How do you encourage peer support in your classroom/school?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
A2 I am starting a @TED_ED club in my school, very excited to do this, between the #PBL we have done and Ss sharing their work at #edtech conferences, this seems like a great opp to build so many vital skills #stuvoice#learnlap
✨A3: FOCUS ON STUDENTS’ STRENGTHS! Everyone has strengths and weakness, but allowing Ss to thrive on what they're naturally good at sets them up for success. In addition, focusing on a student’s strengths increases their confidence and self-perception tremendously!✨
#LearnLAP
A2. Ss are given opportunities to invent, create, design, and follow passions through different projects that we do. We may do a makerspace bag, or weaving and creating, building and inventing, etc. #learnlap
A3: #Learnlap While I have not been very consistent using it myself, I love the "ask 3 before me" rule. Many times students can help much better than I can.
A2.2:
In addition, I continue to build my library of scenes and monologues, so Ss can find material that speaks to them. For the Ss who are not hard core theatre kids—it’s about collaboration and building confidence. I don’t mind them finding material close to “them.” #LearnLAP
A3 Expect Ss to work together & when they disagree they have to come to a consensus as to what the group thinks Forces them to meet in the middle until they have more evidence #LearnLAP
A2: By creating a culture of inquiry and a climate that never settles. We continue to reflect over time and embrace the beauty of the diversity each of our experiences and perspectives bring to the table. #learnlap
A3: At the beginning of the year, we learn different Kagan structures. We also explicitly talk through and model how to be a partner or group mate. #LearnLAP
Character anaysis, understanding of plot and setting, how it affects the story, etc. Also, using @scratch in IT opes a new door for students that are tired of traditional demonstrations of understanding. #LearnLAP
A3: I've looked at their work and given real feedback. Not just comments on Google, but in person and even given recommendations and people to look into that could continue to polish their work. #LearnLAP

A3 When we are doing groupings I always say pairs OR triples. That way if someone is alone, a pair can invite them in. MS kiddos can be incredibly kind when given the chance. #LearnLAP
Q1 #LearnLAP I like to partner my students up to work on their math problems. This gives them a chance to discuss the different methods students use to solve the problems. They are also able to discuss who is correct and why.
A3: For my kids right now, it's all about modeling and teaching how we talk to each other and help other. I make sure to call out positive examples when they happen (today I had one kiddo lean over and help their table partner with sound work, I called it out!) #LearnLAP
A3 - We do projects most of the time. They are almost always in pairs or quads. Randomize the groups so kids get to learn about each other. Reflect on something positive they learned about a peer as they conclude work. #LearnLAP
Yes! We usually start the unit with song analysis. This year, in 9th grade, we began a bit differently with motion poems, but the kids really engage poetry when you target songs. I did some song analysis with my 10th graders this year. They did really well with it. #learnlap
A3 providing positive feedback when kids support others the way I’m looking for and whisper a suggestion to another who needs guidance toward peer support #LearnLAP
A3 we do a lot of "critical friends" for reviewing our writing. Looking to incorporate a S ran class blog next year to increase this collaboration. #LearnLAP
A1: I love collaborative group activities. I teach science so I feel like it just comes natural. I really LOVE tech like #quizletlive that requires Ss to work together. My Ss like to win! #learnlap
A3: I read somewhere of a teacher that devoted a whole day for students to review/show off their projects before turning them in so students could get feedback from each other and I'd like to do that once I get a classroom!
#LearnLAP
A3: partnering up students for tasks and learning opportunities such as class work or monitoring student classrooms at lunch has proven to be successful and promotes confidence and relationship building! #learnlap
A3: We give positive feedback through @Seesaw and time to give book talks - increased interest in something new and connections in interests between Ss who don't normally connect #LearnLAP
A3: @quizlet is great for practicing vocab with quizlet live! When students communicate and collaborate to win the game, quiet students build that confidence #LearnLap
A3: They have a workshop partner for quite a while so that they build trust between each other. They can go to their partner for celebrations, collaboration and suggestions. They also reach out to previous partners or any other student they feel can mentor them. #LearnLAP
A3 - Peer review groups, exchanging videos, having common spaces in the classroom. All can help but also making each student an expert in the classroom and encouraging students to use their classmates as resources. #learnlap
A3) One way is thru Twitter chats like this one for students; a leave one, take one Post-It note board of compliments; give the class multiple ways to applaud their peers (“fireworks,” “round of applause,” “you rock!”). #learnlap

A3. We use ask 3 before me and Love it. Kids of all abilities get asked to help. We also took Give Me Five from @PaulSolarz where kids can share something they just learned. #LearnLAP
A3: For their book club discussions they worked together to create central ideas that would later be used for blog posts. Talking helps them reflect on their ideas and gather others. #learnlap
Ultimately, I think it's about the culture we create in our schools. For example, our 7th graders created an online study group on their own to support each other. I believe that stems from the environment we create in our classrooms. #learnlap

#LearnLAP Mystery Skype, Geniys Hour, community day where local professionals come and answer questions, field trips and I love having 8th graders come back and mentor the 7th graders. Gives them a sense of pride to come back and mentor.

Sometimes students might have a question or need advice that their PLN/PLC peer group doesn't know the answer to.
Q6: How can we help students get matched-up and connect with experts?
#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
#learnlap A6. Through guidance and not leaving them without any support from us..They Lead, but they know they have the support if necessary. Also, teaching importance of asking for the support..
A6 We can bring engineers to view STEAM projects. We can send Ss TED Talks to politicians. We can take Ss to participate in community service projects. #LearnLAP

#LearnLAP@teresagross625@PaulSolarz
I think we need to be mindful how our actions model pedagogy. We have to create experiences for teachers in the same way we create conditions for learning for students. #LearnLAP
A1: As adults, we can collaborate on pretty much anything. I try to do the same for my students. If desks are in rows, they are in groups so there are partners, but I like to keep them in groups and create tasks where students can bounce ideas off each other. #learnlap
A6. Sometimes it's going through channels, connections, researching pathways, so that we can provide the best solution and help to lead the way for a Ss! #learnlap
I use google survey after an assessment or lesson asking for their suggestions to improve them if need be. After a lab or activity I ask them as a TOTD to write me a Dear Mrs. CJ letter , letting me know how & why it was successful for them- was it challenging? Engaging?
A6: this is definitely an area I think I could do more in or rather let Ss do more. I connect with scientist and astronauts through Twitter and share with my Ss, but what I should do more of...helping them find ways to connect. #LearnLAP
A6: I think this comes down to understanding sources...Wikipedia vs NASA, TMZ vs Time Mag...knowing where to look for info you can trust...being sure to curate from good sources. Actually, I know many adults that could get better at this! 😂 #LearnLAP

A6: When creating collaborative groups, make sure there is a mix of ability levels. Otherwise, create twitter chats that include topical experts that will engage with the students. Invite experts into the classroom for the students to interact with. #learnlap
A6: Old fashioned snail mail works for connecting with experts as well as Skyping, Google Hangouts, and using Twitter. Say yes when you get the opportunity to bring someone into your class's learning.#learnlap
A3: In my class, I emphasize that we all have our strengths and weaknesses, but together we are stronger. I tell my Ss that I can be forgetful and lose focus, but others help me (especially my wife). #LearnLAP
A6 If you ask any successful person, they will tell you they had a mentor to guide them. Our school has a Cooperative Work Experience program that places students in positions in which they have an interest...maybe even a passion! #LearnLAP
A6 getting to know our Ss helps us understand their likes and desires. We can then look to find experts that will help them reach their goals. Bringing in experts may also help spark interests in others. #LearnLAP
This reminds me... we bring in family experts during units that they can connect to! Heritage info, business info, accountants/advertising, etc. #learnlap
Kids can choose from about 40 clubs. I do guitar club. Fits into the schedule like a pep rally would. 45 minutes of club time once a month. Clubs are from a variety of interests. #learnlap
#learnlap It does but I have leRned to grow a thick skin because 7th graders are generally very honest, kind and critical and it can sting at first but in the end real growth because it is based on honest feedback
A6: I've recently seen #SkypeAScientist in action ... A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. One 4th gr Ss said, "I want to be a paleontologist!"
@SkypeClassroom has a TON of these resources.
#LearnLAP
A6 - I've found lots of success asking questions via tweet and getting quick responses (often from spouses of the members of my PLN!). Might want to check out @thrively and @neprisapp as well!
I also enjoy connecting Ss to Ss via pen pals w/my PLN or @PenpalSchools! #LearnLAP

✨A7: COLLABORATION CIRCLES! During our writer’s workshop time, we’ve been creating and collaborating on our essays in a step-by-step process. It’s been a climate changer. Students have been very receptive to giving and receiving feedback and staying on pace!✨

A6:
For those of us in MS and HS, we cannot forget the power of our colleaguesas experts—especially experts in areas they don’t teach. I know where to send Ss interested in football, fiber arts, archery, the Renaissance, geocaching, kayaking, etc. #LearnLAP
A7 I do believe that I have some Ss in a PLN, the groups that have gone to the #edtech conferences and STEAM showcases together have really connected w/one another, also they led PD for our Ts, they took over, was awesome #learnlap

A6 - While we definitely do t do it as much as I’d like, we bring in speakers in various areas to discuss opportunities in a field of study. Also, to answer questions about a topic that’s being covered in class. #learnlap
A7: #learnlap I am planning a "help wanted/personals" type board in my class for students to post topics to which others can reply. Making KWL a real life skill.
A7 By applying some ideas from #LearnLAP tonight I can see ways to not give Ss just voice/choice but being more of a collaborative architect in the classroom You all are making me think!
A6: Social Media is a great way to connect with experts! Also e-mail, youtube (there's a video for that 😂), tapping into experts in other classes (teachers and ss), and community members #LearnLAP

A7 I would like student PLN's to happen at the initiative of the S. I would like to try and use class hashtags to allow for discussions but then expand it to neighboring schools. #LearnLAP
A7: This is hard for me to picture just yet...maybe I'll get better when I get a class! but I imagine students working together for projects and not needing to ask me for help bc they have such a good pln
#LearnLAP
A4: Something new I am trying are mini-surveys as Entrance Tickets w/ new units. For example, my 10s are approaching a Titanic nonfiction unit; I surveyed which topics interested them (engineering vs. human interest, etc.) then let them work in PBL groups accordingly #LearnLAP

I already have students working with a partner in their class, but I’d love to do more of them reaching out between my 2 classes. I’ve done it some for modeling writing and for experts, but would be cool to have time set aside to collaborate across the classes each day. #LearnLAP
A6a. Our Ss can be experts too! We are studying culture in ss & climate and weather in science. The Ss are going to put together brochures on where to travel after retirement for the ts retiring this year. They asked if they could even hold a workshop and create slides #LearnLAP
A6: We have also tossed the idea of having a "bank" of parents we can potentially call on for these types of interactions. The local connection might be more powerful.
#LearnLAP
A7: it would be super awesome and powerful to not only have these S PLNs within our classroom, but across grade levels and across campuses. Give Ss the connectivity to collaborate on something, maybe through Google apps or even classroom? #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP I love love student edcamps (we use one for ecosystems) student-led remediation & enrichment circles work great for Friday “sum it up” time. I love our student blog and podcasts-any way I can get them purposefully talking is a good thing.

A7 I have been slowly introducing it through our current series using @flipgrid as a medium. I can see it growing into a F2F experience daily. #learnlap
A7 - Fairly easily if I start earlier in the year. Rather than start out the year with an annotated bibliography, have students find 20 new twitter sources or youtube channels. Going outside the box rather than staying with the old school. #learnlap
A7: I foresee creating a virtual learning space with several other educators where our students chat like we are here, follow each other, and collaborate to solve problems. #LearnLAP
A7: I envision PLNs with student leaders facilitating discussions, organizing "chats," running small groups. Let student leaders grow from within. As more of them model, hopefully more students will gain confidence. #learnlap
Q7: In 3rd grade we have penpals @MissBrooten. We've done a mystery skype together, written letters, and interacted on @flipgrid. My students love their penpals and love collaborating with them. #Learnlap
A7. I can see possibly see one forming at our school! We have bookclubs run by Ss. PLN for Ss in a claroom or grade level would be an interesting idea and beneficial that Ss leadership and more voice! #learnlap
A4: I would like to see students view social media as a way to connect and learn. Not just "chat" with friends. Start building a positive profile that will benefit them later. #learnlap
Thank you for joining me and @teresagross625 tonight on #LearnLAP! So many great ideas were shared!
A special thank you to @PaulSolarz for letting us steer your pirate ship!
⚠️NOW!!!! Head on over to #TLAP w/ @sheehyrw!
A7: I think many kids are already there. Anytime a student brings an extension on learning back I think some form of PLN has happened. Might be kid to kid or kid to adult. Both are equally good. #LearnLAP
My students have led several Twitter chats! They have done an awesome job of building their online presence, spreading kindness and connecting with the world! #learnlap

Tremendous thanks goes out to @KimSnodgrass & @teresagross625 for moderating a FAST-MOVING #LearnLAP chat this evening & everyone who participated!
Hope you'll all be back next week when @Mtiesworth moderates: "Utilizing Technology to create a more student centered classroom."
A7:
I had not thought about Ss PLN before tonight. I’m going to have to ponder and process more. To me a huge part of a S PLN that is beyond mere community would be having a group of other Ss that truly have the best interest of each other at heart. #LearnLAP
A5: Surrounding yourself with others that are as passionate as you are, and who, more importantly, want to truly help you be a better person and educator is why it’s so important to connect and learn from each other. @awelcome@TechNinjaTodd@burgessdave

A4: I would like to see students view social media as a way to connect and learn. Not just "chat" with friends. Start building a positive profile that will benefit them later. #learnlap
A7. Off the beaten path of the actual question a bit prolly - but I still want to design & provide a students teaching teachers tech day experience!! Trying to figure out how /when to get that in !! #LearnLAP
Yikes. More power to you. It it also an opportunity to teach constructive feedback? (including being kind and emphasizing strengths, just as they'd appreciate themselves!) #LearnLAP
A7: I saw the beginnings of this with our #CodetotheFuture projects. I would love to see more... maybe build a class expert list. Ss could add what they are great at, we could also add teachers, parents, etc. to our expert/PLN list. #LearnLAP

#learnlap A7. I'd love to see PLN Teams created across grade levels. It would be great to see within a PLN Team, kids team-building, sharing work, projects, choosing topics to talk about.
Definitely going to have to go back and reread all these great thoughts tonight! Thanks @KimSnodgrass and @teresagross625 for the great chat tonight! #learnlap
If we are going to encourage them to be life long learners, we must walk the walk. Additionally, they need to feel like they have things to teach others. I'm first in line for that!! #learnlap

Same here. It breathed new life into my teaching. I’ve met Ts like me who care very deeply about their Ss. Before Twitter, I kind felt alone because I worry about my Ss and want the very best for them. #LearnLAP
It's time to juggle some amazing chats! Just finished #learnlap, joining #tlap and now you've captured my interest! Always love to steal ideas from @ericcurts#ISTELitChat
