A1: when tutorting, i like to introduce the author first and then basic background info about the book
A1: Once we book talk, we color print the cover and hang it. By the end of the year, it looks great. Ss refer to wall for ideas.

A1: We ensure that writers and readers can communicate with us! It's all about feedback & what works!
A1 The best book recommendations are from one kid to another-- I often ask kids who'd they recommend a book for
I do the same when I'm wandering the shelves with students during checkout time, sporadic booktalks are the best
I do love letting students share their own book talks when they have found something they are excited about.
A1 and I used to open every 3rd/4th library class with a chance for Ss to give their own talks so they had chances to practice

Booked is a great book recommender as students now come in wanting the titles mentioned in it
Book talk at the beginning of reading wkshp. Try to include excerpt that leaves them wanting more!
Awesome! I like using other teachers' lists so our class can see what other kids are interested in.
When Ss hear one they want, they add it to the To Be Read list in Readers Notebk

A1: I start yr off by booktalking few different ways. Once kids "realize" we r a , I point out its book talking
A1: A routine when a bk talk is over: "Who else has read this bk? Do you think other readers would like it?" Peers are powerful.

I like this idea!!! https://t.co/3yZyrxAlE4
A1: This year I started First Chapter Fridays. Been very successful getting under appreciated books some love.
A1: borrowed this idea from last and now have Ss meet with peers 3x a week to share their book tracks &… https://t.co/lCLEdWfdqp

When I observe powerful book talks, I notice one common theme: ALL kids have a voice.
A1-No specific ritual other than book talking to my ELA friends when passing along recs
A1- This year, I need to learn to work it into my daily and weekly schedule.
Using passages as mentor texts also works well for this- does double-duty as a book talk! https://t.co/Ur0wDkY4Ok
Incorporating has also been key. Lots of mini book talks happening when we find powerful openings.
We do this a lot! https://t.co/78Z30rtC0M
A1: A routine when a bk talk is over: "Who else has read this bk? Do you think other readers would like it?" Peers are powerful.
A1: Started with a daily talk about each of the books from my summer stack. Invited kids to do the same.
I've found that personalized book rec's have more power + meaning than whole class book talks, especially with 4th & 5th graders
A1: I book talk new books we get in. I've also been book talking our state reading list.
Q1 - I read the first few lines of a book - if it catches a student's interest I hand it over.
I'm curious about seesaw. We need to get together and talk!
A1: I like to do "drive by" booktalks and pop in randomly to classes. I think the element of surprise enhances the excitment.

Love this! https://t.co/igoWWBbptz
I've been talking books regularly and wearing them recently. Kids ask "what's that book in your pocket"... Another book talk! A1
A1: I do a mix of trailers, 1stfew pages, and talks. But sometimes the mat poplr are the bks I haven't read and ask for S fdbk
A1: Start every library class with a few book trailers and/or quick book talks. Will have a sign up sheet starting in Oct for Ss
When i taught school, I pulled up youtube video book talks made by other students.
Since my students haven't booktalked yet I will need to do a lot of modeling.
Hey there! We are tuning in from MA! We are so excited to discuss books! Our passion!
A1: As librarian, after booktalk often have many ss want 2 check it out we do a drawing. 1st draw gets it 1st & rest on hold.
So helpful for Ss to learn ways to create their own TBR stack
A1 always tried to book talk new arrivals before they came so kids would be thinking about them prior to putting the display out
Hey! I'm Emma. I am participating in this for my Children's Lit class
YES! Book trailers are such a good way to get students excited about a book.
Isn't that a beautiful thing??? :)
Another great idea! Must borrow! https://t.co/1Er3r5UtXF
A1: This year I started First Chapter Fridays. Been very successful getting under appreciated books some love.
A1 My goal is to use our class FB page as a place to highlight book talks.
I do the same thing. Then we start a sticky note of who wants to read it next! https://t.co/DvTFccrrHw
A1: A routine when a bk talk is over: "Who else has read this bk? Do you think other readers would like it?" Peers are powerful.
Hmm. May be something I need to try!
A1: If a s has read the book, I ask them to chime in before I say anything
A1. My favorite book talks are the unplanned ones that happen with students in the hallway!
Q2. How do you engage students in book talking?
This is a challenge that I've been trying to surmount, too, ... https://t.co/oSs5fT469c
A1 I don't usually get that much time with a class...try to book talk individuals/small groups as much as I can
A1: Ss have their To Be Read lists out and ready to go during book talk & status of the class.
I've tried to have Book Trailer Tuesdays but often have tech problems. 😖
A1-Booktalk to Ss when I can. Also share w/teacher friends on my FB page
A1 - Confession... I tend to have read more MG and YA. 1st year in 4th means I need to change my reading rituals to book talk.
A1: Bk talks, from me or Ss, almost always guarantees an instantly long hold list in the library!
This is an awesome idea! Love QR codes https://t.co/TPUY6t3FUx
A1 Book talks are central to Ind reading & Lit classes. Ss count on peers' QR codes inside book covers to hear/see the review.
Great way to build a community of readers is for Ss to recommend books to each other!
A1. Book talks can occur at end of reading workshop. Ss turn & talk to share books then share a few whole group if time allows.
A2 I start by lots of modeling, and usually within a week or so, there's a student who HAS to share. That's our starting point.
never used a script...I wanted to share my real feelings not a prepared remark
Cool, I might try this too!
Until someone gets a black eye. You would have thought I was selling TVs on Black Friday!
Very helpful 2 have Ss write the book they are talking up on a card so kids have something to reference when adding to TBR in nbs
Carol from Madison, WI, Gr3. Learning to Book Talk is timely topic for me.
Once I've set the tone of all out gushing, I have kids share. Thinking about for grades 3-4 this year. On fence.
"what's that book in your pocket?" Love this!
A1: YES!!! When I hear teachers talking about books with other teachers, I swoon! https://t.co/GFndFopKfw
A1: Also book talk to teachers so they can get excited about new read aloud and books to share with Ss.
in order to engage my students I like to talk about the books they love. I make the conversation about them, not me
I want the Ss to be able to talk naturally about the book and why it touched them. I do not want to schedule or have a routine.
A2: Provide different ways to booktalk. Can be in person but also visual. Voice recording, blog post, etc.- the point is to share
it'd be great to get Ss to submit SHORT booktalks- highlight 1 or 2 /week for am news! https://t.co/z401UeAUtu
A1 We also include a short bk talk every day on our morning news show.
The rule in my room is paper-scissors-rock for books if they can't sort it out.
A2: involvement: turn and talk: what connections might you have to this book-author? What did you notice?
Hi, Sybil from IN (PD Coach)
A2-I just ask what they are reading. Ss love to share when you ask!
Where can I find archives from last month's ?
A2 I think daily conferences with Ss build trust, and trust = Ss wanting to hear what you have to say. Trust = Engagement
A1 I also carry a book around at all times - students and teachers are bound to ask what it is about!
You must have a great professor! This is the place to be for children's literature!
A1 I try to carry a book w me as I walk around the school. If Ss look interested or ask abt it, I book talk it & offer to share.
A2. I like to engage students in book talking by asking them basic and detailed questions about the book
is now trending in USA, ranking 29
A2 - I teach teachers () so first we are learning about reading aloud. Then booktalk the books they read aloud.
When a S finishes a book they have a peer conference. They have access to "choose your own adv" sheets to guide .
A2: Ss WANT to talk (middle school). We talk and share and repeat around the room. Built-in engagement b/c they are CHOICE books.
A2: natural convos are perfect bc there is no prep to them. Start everyday with book convos which lead to TBR lists
A2: in order to engage my students, I like to talk about the books they love. I make the conversation about them, not me
A2: Part of our Feature Work in is to have students reflect on a post of their choosing. More book talks.
I get excited about the books I read. When I start talking about books, they all start sharing the books they love. Organic
A2: We engage our Ss in book talks by providing choice and voice. and share your reading life with us!
I'm pretty similar. I do a lot of "who has today's book talk?" with them. Usually there's someone.
A2 I find that sharing my love of books often encourages the kids to share with me. Then I encourage them to share with others.
A2: By making sure book talks are short and to the point. No more than a minute, and leave a cliffhanger!
yes, teacher modeling is key.
Best form of engagement is genuine teacher excitement about a book. Ss feed off that energy.
A2 id ask who else liked a book I shared and why...I wanted them sharing thoughts and getting them talking to each other too
A2: Excitement! Enthusiasm! They know when it's real. It's contagious.
I have 3rd graders. I tend to do raffles.
I'd love to share our Mock Newbery project with friends. It's spreading across all 11 elementary schools… https://t.co/1s2ZoUbtiM
I set it up to use with my 6th graders, but ended up not introducing it yet, some reservations.

A2. Building a culture of sharing what we read seemed to naturally turn into Ss leading booktalks.
Linda Gambrell says, "Kids read what we bless."
I like it. Avid readers are always making plans for down their reading roads. https://t.co/8gtiDpJdMF
I also do a Future Reading Friday- love that Ss get excited for it!
A#2 Read aloud with a personal connection. Students share their connections.
I also require each student to do one every month, but it's not graded. For my students stalking my feed: sssh. You know nothing.
A2: In talks, Ss usually name other Ss who would like the book. That inspires those Ss to bktalk and share that special feeling.
I use and in the library to get students excited about books. Students love winning books! :)
After lots of teacher modeling, I ask for student volunteers. Fun to see how eager they are to tell their peers about fave books
A2. One year I had students create book ads after class talk and hung in hallway to extend conversation to other classes
Ss see me book talk, they get the hang of it & jump right in. It's pretty organic. They just take the floor one after the other.
Literacy coach from NW Houston area- Hopping in & out during our kiddos bedtime routine!
A2: Let readers know ALL books and voices are valued.
I’m in my first year of 3rd after 22 years in middle school. HUGE shift in reading!
A2. Ss share about favorite books in online spaces then post QR codes around school to share w others https://t.co/PP1WTDowaG

A2 In order to engage book talks I ask my students what kind of books they like to read.
A2: I model different ways of booktalking. Excitement is one way. But quiet booktalks can be as well. Sts need to find own voice

A2: I read an exciting part & leave them in suspense.
A2: I model for the first few weeks, hinting that s's will do their own talks. Always one brave student to get the ball rolling
My report card requires Speaking&Listening grade for 4th/5th.Any good quick rubrics out there for simple book talks?
A2 "Oooh, you're reading X? What do you think about it?"
that makes so much sense.
In addition to informal peer book talks Ss create formal presentations to practice public speaking & integrating .
A2 I think it's nice to mix things up-sometimes video to QR code, FaceTime speed dating style, gallery walk of quotes/image
Our librarian does that too. Great idea.
A2. I ask students to share their thoughts about characters and the choices made in the book
How cool! I need to start doing this.
A2: Lots of modeling and sharing of MY reading and reflections on me as a reader
If someone has a book, I'll always ask about it. But sometimes we'll be talking and a book rec occurs to me...can't help myself.
A2 Love to use a speed dating format for Ss to share current book recommendations. The book "buzz" is amazing.
A2 Creating an environment where Ss are comfortable sharing and see themselves as part of a community so convos happen naturally
We do book talks and read alouds any time and anywhere. We try to include them at every meeting we host.
A2: Start lesson with 'before we start, who has read something great since last class.' Working on having kids share more
This yr I want to do more frequent & brief book talks, but Speed Booking (like speed dating)w/ my 6th graders has been a success.
A2: Most engaging bk talks I see are the ones I "eavesdrop" on...reader to reader while they are bk shopping.
Agreed! Model, model, model that love of reading!
A2: Have to be really diverse in offerings, from topics, 2 authors, 2 reading levels, 2 genres-Never know what will grip them!
A2 I had them record a book talk and then put a qr code in the flap so there's could scan it and listen
A2 know what yr Ss like to read out those books n their hands
A2 Have more copies of titles available this year! Seems like there were never enough copies of the books I shared last year.
What are you reading? There has to be more than Geronimo and Junie B Jones...
A2 Ss constantly sharing and recommending on own. Sometimes quick shares or more formal presentations.
A2: We are launching a class blog for book talks/review, too. Part of our reading legacy.

A2: I like to ask Ss what they are reading and that tends to spark conversation about a book which leads to other recs.
So true. Peer to peer recommendations are powerful. Especially when not forced. https://t.co/XjZaNDHtHW
A2: Most engaging bk talks I see are the ones I "eavesdrop" on...reader to reader while they are bk shopping.
A2 I always offered a list of "Banned Books" so my Ss felt as though we were doing something that could get us into "trouble"!!

We do book talks and read alouds any time and anywhere. We try to include them at every meeting we host.
Love using padlet for Ss to rate and share their book recs especially those who are not comfortable talking in front of others.
A2: model, model, model. And, catch readers naturally talking about books and make a BIG deal about it!
I usually only have to ask if anyone wants to share. This week, I heard some that needed a bit more form.Too much "...and then"
I don’t require; DO grade! Easy A! participate = points. Ss love it — easy success! Plus, it’s what THEY WANT to say!
A2 Sometimes it is formal like an assignment to do a book talk or it is informal in class
Absolutely! The best convos I have are about books. https://t.co/ZwJgOI9rlg

Love this! Great way to allow all students to have a voice! https://t.co/0R1oEdMFzm
A2: model, model, model. And, catch readers naturally talking about books and make a BIG deal about it!
Hmmm. . .that's actually a pretty ingenious way to go about it!
Knowing that at least 1 person will want to read the book is a bit of a safety net & builds reading community!
A2 We warm up virtually, sharing online blurbs as reading community: stepping stone to live S book talks https://t.co/JcF5ST9xWn
Tip: If you book talk during transitions, Ss will transition quickly and quietly. They want to hear the talk.
I am doing that right now with Chatterpix book trailers we made.
Perhaps the most important part of book talks! It happens every day all over school, not just in library. https://t.co/6hpbqTyUCz
Linda Gambrell says, "Kids read what we bless."
A1: Started displaying books I'm reading, listening to, or excited about starting. Lots of Ss ask me about them.

Our topic tonight is book talking. Nothing sparks interest in books more than enthusiastic testimonials from other readers!
A2 we have kids write out reviews - even a few sentences - and then display them in the library. THAT'S the important part.
Have to make sure they know how to ask questions. I find the younger ones need guiding with this.
A2 created a packet and embedded it in a teacher portal for us all to share recommended titles as well
A2 We engage Ss by modeling, asking questions, letting high interests books float around the room & sparking conversation.
A1 If a T & I have shared a book experience, I stop in the classroom & enthuse about our book love to show Ss what readers do.

A2: Remembering, too, that book talks around books we have both read as meaningful as those we might want to introduce. Shared.
A2 When I did book chats, I always invited staff whom Ss didn't interact w/ academically: maintenance, lunch crew, secretaries
These are the authentic conversations readers have about books. Love it!
A1 As a parent volunteer, I booktalk in my kids' classes once a month. Trying to find ways to have more impact schoolwide. Ideas?
A2: I encourage students to practice book talks (and reading aloud) to their stuffed animals and pets.
A2 Create an enviro where everyone can share titles they are excited about. Not just on assigned dates like book reports.
Nicole from Michigan, seeking my degree in Elementary Ed.
Put on the morning announcements! https://t.co/we5LMt4p1a
A1 As a parent volunteer, I booktalk in my kids' classes once a month. Trying to find ways to have more impact schoolwide. Ideas?
Get interesting and engaging bks into Ss hands. Ss give the best booktalks when they really love the bk!
Supporting students with disabilities and ELLs? Use a variety of formats https://t.co/HCucRcY52G
A2: Provide different ways to booktalk. Can be in person but also visual. Voice recording, blog post, etc.- the point is to share

Glad to have pre-service teachers here! Welcome :-)
Energy & enthusiasm, yes: but we need 2 b authentic, too. If we don't love a book, we can't pretend to love it. Ss know better.
Great point! Lots of modeling and question starters would help!
We must embrace opportunities for book talks. I saw a sweet friend bring in a book and say I heard you were taking ballet...
A2: I always compile the list of student favorite books from all 4 classes and distribute. Kids love it.
I could also see Classroom's 'Create a Question' feature as a way to spark give-&-take about what Ss are reading
Joining in on the fun a little late! 1st grade teacher from Hawley.
Everyone say HI to . She’s from my district! Yay!
A2: Always taking student recommendations and reading the book they suggest. So important.
A2 Oops! https://t.co/5PEub7SszU

A2-I talk about recommending books that need a signal boost, including what you love about it without giving away spoilers.
I’m tempted to put my Wimpy Kid books away. Some kids won’t try anything else as long as those are out.

Really want to do this. Glad you got to post on
https://t.co/eIy3BIURcY
I think knowing your students is key to engagement. If you know what they like, they'll be likely to enjoy what you suggest!
Making time for book talks is def important. Make Ss fall in love w/ books📚
Love this idea! https://t.co/6SlhNKvG8L
A2: Found smooth rocks in the summer and wrote "This book rocks!" on them. Students place a rock on a book and to peers.
Organic convos are imp and I love asking Ss to share abt a bk I haven't read as they turn it in. Ss nearby benefit, too!
Yes, best bk talks are when Ss don't realize they're doing it- best not to be an assignment. More authentic!
that is what I was thinking. Knowing each other's likes and interest = authentic reading
Model "I think you'd like this b/c u liked ......", Soon Ss are thinking of who and y to recommend to
I would like to do more book talks at faculty meetings - who has had great success with this? They all want to get out of there!
A2 We always use to help support our book talks. We can show a visual of what we have read and our thinking
I noticed a similar trend with a different series! I keep them out, eventually they move on.
A1 If I see several Ss in the school rdg the same book, ex. Magnus Chase, I organize an extra-curricular book talk (w snacks!).
https://t.co/Y8ZogCuWYv
I'm just starting out, but in the future I could see myself incorporating book talks into morning or afternoon meetings.
Late to the chat but excited from NC!
Wimpy Kid launched my most reading-suspicious students into other series! Try companion books?
Record book talk for sharing with wider audience? Flipped book talks, sort of...
A2 I share my reading life on my door. Makes great conversation starter. here's last year's door. https://t.co/CbwuZjzbGN

Q2. How do you engage students in book talking?
A2: my students leave "book love" sticky notes with the book on their classmates desk. Kid to kid recommendation is powerful!
Fenway and Hattie is such a fun, engaging read for third graders!
Excellent point. Authenticity gives kids awareness that they may not love or even like every book they pick up.
I also put what I'm reading now and reading next in my email signature and sometimes other teachers will ask me about it.
Another great idea from https://t.co/lsOoxS4ffw
Love using the framework, "IF YOU LIKED ________ YOU SHOULD TRY ________ BECAUSE_______" works w/all ages!
Hi all, I'm jumping in late after grocery shopping. I'm a high school teacher in year 20 in Tidewater, Virginia.

A2 modeling various ways to talk about books. I share with a short comment on our class Instagram… https://t.co/3Rtt3jKwMb
I put my Wimpy kid books next to other humorous ones to show them what else was available.
A2: With older readers, too, I like to have them see me reading professional texts during reading time. Reading into my work.
I said tempted. I don’t like to limit choice, so they’ll stay out. I’ll just strategically put read-alike nearby.
I do a special read-alike display for this very reason. They always get signed out.
A2: Try to add a variety of genres. Don't want to book talk just my likes. Try to read widely & identify my gaps to reach Ss.
LOVED it! I have a list of waiting students for it too. Great mystery!

Great point Wayne! Also helps to know collection to be able to recommend a read alike. https://t.co/xnNqCepfUk
Know your collection too. many times I had to give talks on the fly when a student handed me a book and asked what it's about
