#BrevardTLC is a Teacher Leadership Council in Brevard County, Florida that empowers teacher leaders within the district and supports other districts in their creation of teacher leadership councils. Moderators and executive directors, Dr. Lucy Haddock @lucille414 and Mrs. Christina Donohue @DonohueTeach facilitate monthly chats about leadership and more. Chats are held on the third Thursday of every month 7:00-8:00pm EST.
A1- The BSF makes it their mission to support students, teachers, and help facilitate teacher recognition and professional development. In addition, they lobby with legislators for funds to support our fabulous district! We appreciate everything they do! #brevardtlc
A3- Community engagement can be support in a variety of ways such as financial support, mentoring, volunteering, donations, round table discussions, work programs, internships, and more! #brevardtlc
As a teacher I always appreciated parent volunteers, community leaders coming to share their profession with my students, and community members coming to read or support science labs! The BSF provided options of great partners to reach out to.
#BrevardTLC
A4- I current work with business partners to support our school and facilitate our parent volunteers. At our school we have business partners and volunteers who mentor our students through our JUMP program. #brevardtlc
Q5: In what ways do you feel that sharing stories from your classroom with the Foundation would better connect community partners to what's important in today's classrooms? #BrevardTLC
A5- The Foundation supports teachers by connecting the needs of our classroom/schools with business partners and grant opportunities available through multiple resources. I still remember the day when a grant I applied for was funded through the Foundation. #brevardtlc
#BrevardTLC Michelle, you are exactly right! Sometimes teachers aren't sure how to reach out to the community or make a dream a reality. The Foundations is excellent for connecting ideas and resources!
A6- @NASA or @SpaceX can partner with science classrooms to bring applications to the students for hands on learning. Often schools have clubs or science labs that would be a great place for businesses to provide resources to support the learning of our students. #brevardtlc
A6: The needs of each school and the community are different. Title one schools may need food and supplies. While other schools may need additional resources like sports equipment. Each school and community would have to decide there own needs. #BrevardTLC
Q7: In what ways do you see the Brevard Schools Foundation working to engage communities in their mission to support teachers and students @BrevardSchools ? #BrevardTLC
A6- Currently we have secondary schools that have bare science classrooms. Our science classrooms should spark inquiry, innovation, & the desire to apply learning through a variety of labs, projects, & experiments. We need the support our of local community to do so! #brevardtlc
@SpaceX just began supporting Brevard classrooms by funding Bright Ideas Classroom Grants. We hope it's the beginning of a great relationship with @SpaceX and education in Brevard County #SupportingInnovation#BrevardTLC
In reply to
@DonohueTeach, @NASA, @SpaceX, @SpaceX, @SpaceX
A very cool idea indeed - a top 10 needs list for each school would definitely help community partners or even businesses who match employee donations help fill needs where there are gaps! #BrevardTLC
#BrevardTLC This makes me so happy!!!!! Thank you @SpaceX we appreciate your support! Could you imagine if we joined forces and had school/business partnership?! Scientist visiting the school often to collaborate with teachers to ensure we are career ready focused.
A7: Brevard Schools Foundation could hold an event or publish a wish list for schools. Having a list of school friendly business would be wonderful #BrevardTLC
So true and having teachers who are willing to be ambassadors for education and needs in our community shed light on places (like bare science classrooms) people outside of the education profession do not see! #BrevardTLC
A6- We live in a special place here on the Space Coast with access to a wealth of knowledge (Astronauts, Engineers, Scientist, & more). I'd love to have a round table discussion with a specific group to discuss needs of both the school & the business industry. #brevardtlc
The possibilities are endless! We need community members and businesses both large and small to get involved in education! Together, we can accomplish amazing things. #BrevardTLC
Another example is artist and conservationist @Wyland and the @WylandORG who have partnered with us to fund Bright Ideas Classroom Grants to engage our students in art and marine mammal conservation here in Florida. @PalmBayMagnetHS had an incredible project this year #BrevardTLC
A9- Depending on the extent of the help- A hand written note or a phone call from the teacher or administrator. Larger supports may lend itself to a plaque or other recognition piece. Many schools use banners to recognize business partners. #brevardtlc
A10- Seeking opportunities to share success stories with our community. Invite community members into the schools to showcase the programs and success of our students. #brevardtlc
A11: First have a discussion about what they want to do for education. Start with just a visit and sharing with the kids how they became successful. Personal stories are powerful! #BrevardTLC
Right on!!! We find our supporters are truly interested in helping and they love seeing the outcomes of ways they have been able to play a part in the bigger picture! #BrevardTLC
Love this - we are always ready and able to help connect community resources with needs within our schools. Together, we can help fill gaps and level the playing field for students and teachers. #BrevardTLC
A11- When I was an elementary teacher I would invite community leaders to come and facilitate science experiments, read to my class, or even Skype with us. (@LindaSuePark ) She was amazing when the Skyped my students! #brevardtlc
Q12: Do you use career days, award ceremonies, science fairs, open houses, etc. to recognize your supporters or show potential community and business partners how they can be a part of a special project or need? #BrevardTLC
So true! Behind every statistic is a name, and behind every name is a story. It's the story that creates the desire to ACT and help either provide resources or time to help achieve a resolution. #BrevardTLC
A11- @AJMSGenerals we host an annual women's professional day in which we seek professional women to visit our school and share their stories with our students. We have several mothers who join us each year. #brevardtlc
Thank you for the opportunity to chat with the amazing teachers who joined in tonight's Twitter Chat on Community Engagement. Your insights are powerful! We are so proud to help serve our teachers and students @BrevardSchools#BrevardTLC#BeTheVoice#EducationIsKey
