A1 I feel that gamification is taking content skills and using them in a game fashion. May that be in teams, or an individual competition. #ksedchat

  • thewarsnak Jun 18 @ 9:09 PM EDT
A1: I hear a lot of different ideas/views of gamification. I see it as bringing elements of games into the classroom and intertwining them with the content & learning environment. #ksedchat
  • mrs_koehn Jun 18 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A1: I think it is having students learn and experience the content though some sort of game experience #ksedchat
  • thewarsnak Jun 18 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A1 B: I like that gamification shows up as needing to be spell checked on my computer. Means it must be a bit cutting edge! #ksedchat

  • acooktweet Jun 18 @ 9:13 PM EDT
Great question. I think it does have to have a competitive feel to it even if it's competing against one's self. #ksedchat
  • AmandaBuethe - Moderator Jun 18 @ 9:13 PM EDT
Anything we can do to engage and motivate learners helps! Lots of my Ss personalities lend themselves to adding games to motivate! #ksedchat
  • KatherineTernes Jun 18 @ 9:14 PM EDT
Q2: It is definitely another strategy that can help reach the diverse learning styles that are in your room. Making it more fun and engaging for your Ss is more beneficial then a sit and get method. #ksedchat

  • thewarsnak Jun 18 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A2: It can, first there is an added engagement level and possibly a new sense of purpose. Add a sense of team work & the added comfort of parameters to work within and there is an effective learning environment. #ksedchat

A3. I fear gamification can devalue learning for the sake of learning. #ksedchat
  • mike_poliquin Jun 18 @ 9:19 PM EDT
The improvement factor is the most consistent way to go -- students compete against a standard. When they set the standard higher on their own and go for it, then we got 'em. #ksedchat

A3: Negative outcomes come with competitive games for some. Those kids that aren't as fast as the facts or don't excel in that content area can get discouraged when the aren't doing well in the game. Or fighting from the game, which can be a learning opportunity. #ksedchat

Any poorly-executed teaching strategy leads to negative outcomes. GBL or gamification requires more planning and reflection at the beginning to minimize early negatives, otherwise it won't be viable. Beware overplanning: it isn't viable if it doesn't improve engagement. #ksedchat

I've been dreaming of a role-playing game presentation for content for a while. The challenge is to develop several quality student leaders in a class to serve as game "masters" (combo narrator and umpire). Obviously cannot be competitive nor graded beyond engagement. #ksedchat

A3: Gamification can be overused and lose its “luster” - and as others have said, it sets up the S expectation that ALL lessons will be presented in this format (making it difficult on the current T and future Ts) #ksedchat
  • mike_poliquin Jun 18 @ 9:34 PM EDT
I don't know. I'd think that getting kids hooked on the game and then managing content flow to keep them hooked and progressing is a great way to "flank" the kids into learning when they think they're playing. #ksedchat

Game-based learning should be standards-based -- badging or other method to document learning. Grade using a skill-based challenge level with re-takes. Get work centered on content and not on T. Too many folks think T's job is to be the center of everything (it's not). #ksedchat

Only problem with game-design: it's outside of curriculum learning in most cases. S must learn to design a game before learning content to design the game. I like it but always anticipate the naysayers. You can't miss a beat when the naysaying begins, or it's over. #ksedchat

All gbl/gamify ideas need much planning. We are humans with lives, so start simple. First game should teach a basic move needed in every subsequent game (lesson). You can't just grow the game as kids play -- have a master plan. And share it with #ksedchat as you build it.
