#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.
Welcome to tonight’s #aussieED Chat! Critical thinking is essential to effective learning and productive living. Please introduce yourself and share your definition of critical thinking?
Hi there, I am currently a student teacher in Auckland, New Zealand. One of the assignments this semester is to get involved in some twitter chats. Hope you don't mind me tagging along.

Hi Im Myles, a classroom Teacher + Deputy Principal from NZ (where its half ten! ack!) Critical thinking - evaluating and looking at things with open eyes #aussieED
#aussieED Hi! I'm a Year 4/5 teacher and leader of ICT learning at a Catholic school in Adelaide, Australia. Critical thinking it the ability to analyse information from a variety of sources and to decide what is relevant, accurate and useful in a given situation.
Welcome to tonight’s #aussieED Chat! Critical thinking is essential to effective learning and productive living. Please introduce yourself and share your definition of critical thinking?
Hi everyone! Justine from Auckland, NZ. Teacher and full-time PhD student focusing on gifted & talented ed. Critical thinking is about being able to pull together all info from a range of sources and evaluate it from all sides. #aussieED
Hello #aussieED - I’m Justine from Wollongong throwing the vocational Education hat into the ring. For me, critical thinking is about promoting independent thoughts & actions, based on reasoning and have a learning disposition
Cam from Melbourne, critical thinking is being able to look at things outside the box to ensure that you are able to cover all aspects of a problem #aussieED
Berni from Melbourne. Critical thinking: the ability to reflect, critique and act after having considered all perspectives and points of views #aussieED
Matt from Perth. Head of Design/Technology @HelenaCollege Critical thinking is about actively thinking about what we see and hear. Not just accepting. Its about asking questions. Not accepting everything as fact. #aussieED
#aussieed Bronwyn from Country Vic, Grade 5/6 Teacher and CEO of Our Global Classroom & owner of the most used Flipgrid in the world https://t.co/YW6fKaEjrG that set critical thinking topics that make Ss think outside the box & have a voice to form judgements to be changemakers
Haha it's interesting to use twitter but hey its another great way to connect with new people and see what great stories there are out there :) #aussieED

Hi Everyone 🙋🏻♀️ I’m out tonight but will try to chime in. I like the way @ACARAeduau has positioned critical thinking with creative thinking #aussieED
Hi, I'm Mazz, a year 2 teacher in an independent school in Melbourne. Critical thinking is being reflective and seeing both the positives and negatives and then form your own judgement. Critical thinking is a life skill that is needed as a learner. #aussieED
Hi Im Myles, a classroom Teacher + Deputy Principal from NZ (where its half ten! ack!) Critical thinking - evaluating and looking at things with open eyes #aussieED
Tonight there will be 7 questions around critical thinking in the classroom :) Please remember to use A1, A2 at the beginning of your response & include the hashtag #aussieED :)
Hi everyone. Richard, teacher from Melbourne. Critical thinking? Probably assuming everyone is trying to make a buck from you by feeding you BS. #aussieED
Adrian from Adelaide. Critical thinking is a combination of analysing and evaluating information. Usually domain specific knowledge and understanding is a prerequisite for genuine critical thinking. #aussieEd
Hi all, Dan here, MYP Drama and I&S teacher in Tokyo. Critical Thinking for me is the combination of questioning, wondering, considering various perspectives and reflecting and doing it all again. #aussieED
Remember during the chat to like and retweet posts that resonate with you! Feel free to follow other #aussieED tweeters so that you can continue the conversation beyond 9.30pm!
Its for Innovative Teaching and Learning, so we're learning how to use different platforms and actually learn a few new things from experienced teachers along the way
#aussieED
Well if myself or my students can help with anything please let us know, such a great proactive idea. Really impressed by it - who runs the course? #aussieED
Critical thinking is about questioning why, what & how in order to form a personal judgement about something. I say ‘personal’ bc it is ultimately your perspective not necessarily truth, even if you’re an academic or researcher... #aussieED
Good Evening! Taj from Brisvegas - I help run @fiftysixfamily. My definition of critical thinking is the idea of thinking objectively and innovatively!! #aussieED
Welcome Chris!! I can only imagine that time of the morning it is for you there!! How is the weather? I've seen friends post lots of photos of snow!! #aussieED

Hi Angie from Sydney. Am just popping in and out in between eating jaffas & watching a movie with my hubby. So important to teach our Ss how to be critical thinkers especially with so much info available on the web! #aussieED
A1. Being able to summarise, synthesise, evaluate and analyse what they are taking in and then form a judgment on it. Being able to see an issue from both sides. #aussieED
Cranky old bag from Sydney, here :P
Pretty much what everyone else has said, but I think it also includes being aware of your own biases and the lens through which you're viewing things.
There’s so many aspects to critical thinking but the questions students ask always give me a strong indication of their ability to think critically #aussieED
A1. #AussieEd Ability to look at sources and decide if they are reputable rather than taking the internet at face value! Looking for evidence from multiple sources, using common sense.
A1: Detecting bias in texts, reading past the headline, questioning scientific methods, and trying to make links with other knowledge they've acquired. Probs a bit subject specific.. #AussieEd
Q1 I show them an evidence based piece that is fake then tell them question everything including what I teach. Think for yourself but base it on fact not just feelings (though feelings can be factual). #aussieED
#aussieed A1 students need to be able make observations, question objectively, interpret, use problem solving strategies to make decisions on how they can make a change, I like to think locally, nationally and in the world. Observing, Wondering & Inferring skills are vital.
Thanks Kelly Time is 9.43am GMT so mid morning. Weather improving but with have just been in the grips of the #beastfromtheast & #StormEmma . Yes, lots of snow everywhere in the UK. #aussieED
A1 Though question, thinking should be developmentally appropriate. That said, I do, sort of, like Kieran Egan's stages of development, somatic, mythic, romantic, philosophical, and ironic. #aussieED
#aussieed A1 Inquiring into the big issues, Ts not shying a way from testing their Ss thinking. Allowing kids to be inventors, innovators and campaigners who qualities of global citizens thanks to the UN Sustainable Goals.
A1: How to look for credibility. How to know ‘true’ from Truth. The ability to see through the lies and know why perspective is so important. #aussieED
Of course it can be taught? That's a bold claim & not at all one that's been settled in the research. Both sides have strong arguments on this. #aussieED
A1: A few Key Critical Thinking Skills -
Being able to observe and evaluate. Recognizing Bias and seeing multiple perspectives. Also to be able to come to reasonable conclusions based on evidence.
#aussieED
#aussieED We cant teach children to think critically till we teach them to think per se. stop/pause/ reflect/ask why/gather information/assess alternatives/decide
It’s important to teach what critical thinking looks like within specific domains. For example, source analysis in history and evaluation in scientific prac reports #aussieEd
A1: I think being able to reflect, Problem solve and analyse is very important. Trying to solve a problem using skills that have been taught and then reflect and analyse what went right and wrong is part of lifelong learning and covers all areas in the curriculum. #aussieED
A2- Since not having been in a class yet, I would expect that it would look and sound like students asking lots of questions about what they have learnt and going further into their learning on the topic by researching or forming personal opinions #aussieED
#AussieEd Postman and Weingartner's book Teaching as a Subversive Activity (1969) deals with that idea of cr*p detection early on. They attribute the naming of the concept to Hemingway.
A2: Furrowed brows and tilted heads. It's students debating each other's claims, calling shenanigans on news articles, questioning what I teach them if they believe it contradicts what they already "know" #AussieEd
A2 firstly you need to establish a learning environmental of respect. CT can be present through meaningful questioning, peer-group discussion, access to a variety of texts and opinions kids who are thinking critically are always engaged #aussieED
A2) I look for s's that don't suffer from tbe Donning Kruger effect. They seem to be alot more authentically critical - they are also usually, but not always, harder workers and more disciplined. #aussieED
A2- conversation that is characterised by why, how might, would could, have you considered etc. thinking routines also invite both teacher and students to engage with ideas more critically #aussieED
A2 #AussieEd Ss asking each other how they know something, using multiple sources of evidence, connecting with their own world knowledge, finding clues (inferencing) solving problems, joining dots, fair tests, reflecting on learning.
A2. Ss not afraid to question each other's ideas or what they read/hear/see. Ss not afraid to question me as the teacher either. The understanding in our room that any and all ideas count and are valued. Not afraid to express ideas and opinions. #aussieED
A2b: And I’m happy with the Q. Don’t just trust my word on it…do your research. Particularly when I tell you artificial vanilla was discovered via a beavers butt…#aussieEDhttps://t.co/1UFV3gl8TR
A2) I look for s's that don't suffer from the Donning Kruger effect. They seem to be alot more authentically critical - they are also usually, but not always, harder workers and more disciplined. #aussieED
Q2 for my Ss, critical thinking is using their new language, Chinese, and creating beautiful language, well most of the time and that’s the goal. That’s why critical thinking is hard to do, if everyone could do it easily it wouldn’t be critical thinking...would it? #AussieEd
A2. Ss able to back up their thinking with opinions and facts - being confident to express their ideas, to question without fear. Rich discussion on a wide range of topics. #aussieED
#aussieed A2 Ss have a voice, making observations, learning about the world with the world. My kids use look to learn critical thinking in different domains I have designed 186 different critical thinking tasks https://t.co/NblW6oJAfw lead from Tom March's
A2) I look for s's that don't suffer from tbe Dunning Kruger effect. They seem to be alot more authentically critical - they are also usually, but not always, harder workers and more disciplined. #aussieED
Ss really need explicit instruction in thinking skills! Can start off in kindy with sentence stems and model reflection. Keep them asking questions and guide there question development! #aussieEd
#aussieED We cant teach children to think critically till we teach them to think per se. stop/pause/ reflect/ask why/gather information/assess alternatives/decide
I play devil's advocate a lot. I encourage them to question me (authority) - and don't shut them down when they do. Part of it is giving them the permission/confidence to question. #aussieed
A2 - Love hearing questions like "lets work together to research" and "what if and why does it work that way" . I look for collaboration and Ss wanting to ask why #aussieED
#aussieed A2 My Ss independently working together to solve issues that are sometimes bigger than themselves. https://t.co/d5D0dcp6OW promotes a cultures of kids leading their learning.
I play devil's advocate a lot. I encourage them to question me (authority) - and don't shut them down when they do. Part of it is giving them the permission/confidence to question. #aussieed
A2: In our learning space, you would see student led discussion using prior knowledge, collaboration amongst students. While working: T's prompting Ss with why and how statements and then reflecting on their work at then end. #aussieED
A2- an authentic learning hook or concept is also so imp. Older students engage more deeply when they can connect and know that the issue matters in our world #aussieED
I use to think this. But I’ve been convinced of the contrary. They are usually not authentically transferable. The thinking has to be tied to the content. Thus, fundamentally different skills. #aussieEd
Hi, Laura here from Darwin NT. MYP LangnLit and Design Years 8, 9 + 10 teacher. I think critical thinking can be likened to the mind watching itself. Students understanding the mental process of their thinking. #AussieED
A2: the awe and wonder of 7 and 8 year olds chanting “why miss?” Sometimes in unison, sometimes individually and sometimes in a frantic frenzied whisper... #aussieED
A2: Lots of questioning & justifying. Students sharing ideas and debating them, making connections and developing connections into their own ideas (ideally). #aussieED
A2 Plus the "classroom' doesn't need to be confined by physical boundaries of walls. At times my 'classroom' can be here in the mountains of #Snowdonia Change of environment can promote #criticalthinking skills #aussieED
A3- Pushing for those deep and meaningful questions. I believe that a lot of young people only go for the easiest option to finish the task, but challenging them to think a little deeper will only enhance their learning :) #aussieED
Giving honest feedback to another student in a respectful way. They are either really nice or mean. It is hard for them to find the middle ground #aussieED
A3: I’ve been called wrong on this before, but I thinks its suggesting teachers might not have it 100% correct. That Ts may be wrong. We want critical thinkers, as long as they don’t think critically about us… #aussieED
Assessing reliability/value of sources online. But I don't think this is just a kid thing. I think it's an adult thing too. In fact, I think some kids are more savvy than many adults. #AussieEd
A3 #AussieEd Many of my Ss struggle with perspective. They can only see their own. They are happy to question authority though! Some struggle with metacognitive thinking.
A3. In my experience! Self-belief. Often students take a while to realise the potential of their own thinking and reasoning. Once this hurdle is overcome ss enjoy it and you can’t stop them #aussieED
#aussieed A3 Ss only struggle from the boundaries if they are too closed. Every area of critical thinking still needs to be explicitly taught but Ts need to remember who is doing the talking. If I had to pick an area Ss find it hard to reflect and accept feedback.
A3 Sadly, thinking for yourself is the antithesis of modern education. School and university is more like a game of "guess what the teacher is thinking" than actually encouraging students to make sense of the world. #aussieED
A3 How does one teach the topic - instead of teaching by recipes - teach by concepts - enables a deeper understanding and generates wonder and curiosity #aussieED
A3. Most literacy and numeracy sessions in stage one are fluid and flexible experiences, tailored to individual learning needs. I find stage 1 students struggle with entertaining differing viewpoints the most. #aussieED
A3: I find they struggle with the entire idea of questioning when so many have only been trained to do what they need to to get the A. Play the game, win out, rather than rock some boats and ask some Qs. #AussieEd
#aussieed Sorry, I'm a late arrival. My sense is that students struggle to listen / be open to alternative points of view from their own considered position or those they've learnt from others knowingly or unknowingly.
Q3 its often hard for them to self-reflect positive feedback, easier to negatively critque their own work. Also to sometimes understand the social constructs of knowledge. #aussieED
Focus on topics contributing to assessment literacy with an emphasis on transferring the skills, knowledge, and tools to lead others through the process: https://t.co/NM1BAp6POa#AussieEd#GlobalEd
A3) At times, my Ss struggle to find a “what’s next” to drive their own learning forward. When we conference I want them to seek specific feedback, but this is a tricky skill to learn… #aussieED
A3. In S&C students must understand the same concepts from multiple perspectives whilst pursuing their own. They are taught to recognise ethnocentrism and cultural bias. Most adults can't do this! #aussieED
A1: Making connections with prior knowledge, objectively exploring a new 💡/ knowledge, thinking from different perspectives and analysing thoroughly in order to make a well informed judgment. The journey through Blooms Taxonomy can guide this process. #AussieED
That’s awesome! I’ve had some experience with 3D modeling and CAD programmes in the jewellery industry, interesting how it’s come to education though! #aussieED
A3: As a secondary English teacher I often see students struggling to think critically about their own writing. Such an important skill, but it doesn't always come easily. #aussieED
A3: Last year we discussed this in T4 and recent data trends and observations came out that problem solving and analysing is a real issue amongst students especially in numeracy. Interpreting questions and identifying the skills needed to solve them is a big focus. #aussieED
A3 hardest aspect of critical thinking for Ss would be overcoming their natural bias in thoughts. Have to be aware of bias to be able to deliberately think around it. Very big hurdle for younger Ss. Only then can critical thought take place #aussieEd
A4: I've been trying to take skills they learn in English to analyse texts in Science subjects. They seem to think those skills only belong in one class. #AussieEd
A3 In history it’s difficult for students to evaluate the significance of an event or individual as it takes time for them to build a cumulative knowledge base. #aussieEd
A3- I think students struggle with diff.aspects of critical thinking, in part because they may not have been routinely exposed to it or seen it modelled #aussieED
That's a really interesting way to think about it - could start a really good debate with the Ss. I had a class once that would have LOVED that one! #aussieED
I love 2 stars and a wish, even made my own stamp with it. #aussieED Great for written feedback and also feedback given orally or students just reflecting on their own work.
A4: Does @realDonaldTrump count? I use him quite often when talking about why we should think critically…why we should think, before we speak. #aussieED
#aussieed 100% Charlotte we still need to teach the skills independent from each other to build understanding and lead them into their learning journey.
A4 I think empathy maps are a really useful tool. I think design thinking is useful. I think agile approaches which suggest starting with the biggest risk are good. I think small batch lean approaches are a good idea. #aussieED
Yes, true. Critical thinking routines and skills are transferable & we ask Ss to be aware they can use various methods of thinking in different contexts. But I also believe thinking critically the actions of about a character in a play and a history article differ #AussieED
A3 - knowledge and research.
Students must know the content before they can think critically and apply it.
Research must be guided otherwise it's Wikipedia or Google's first hit #aussieED
#aussieed Kate I agree my biggest concern when I talk to teachers is that students need to be exposed to critical thinking, we forget that whatever a Ss academic ability they still have the capacity to think and never underestimate a Ss ability to think. I have learnt that.
A4) Our classroom is gradeless, but students self-report grades at the end of semester. Collecting evidence of growth and achievement is a challenge. We use a select and defend model. The reporting conferences are exhausting, but almost always amazing. #aussieED
+3/-1 is another great activity to get students thinking about the tough issues... I have my students explain their position (if they are willing to share) #aussieED
A2: I look for students gathering data from multiple sources, analysing, corroborating and making “I conclude ... because ...” statements. I think critical thinking can also be how students understand the why of a text and reading between the lines. #AussieED
A4) Our classroom is gradeless, but students self-report grades at the end of semester. Collecting evidence of growth and achievement is a challenge. We use a select and defend model. The reporting conferences are exhausting, but almost always amazing. #aussieED
A4 selecting articles or materialwhich is relevant and interesting to Ss age and then have small group discussions to analyse and critique is more manageable #aussieed
A4 part 2) We have started using the Harkness Pinwheel method of socratic seminars (yr 6/7). Ss discuss topic for understanding, rather than to show understanding. That has been a positive inclusion this year. #aussieED
I get that absolutely, making that transfer of thinking is using high level critical thinking. I see Critical thinking in Drama as a step on the path of creative thinking. But also agree that context can shift the outcome/product of crit thinking #aussieED
Q5 flows nicely with the others we have had so far... Q5. Students often have difficulty understanding strong vs. weak evidence. How do you help students evaluate quality of evidence? #aussieED
A4) Give students a knowledge organiser that covers all of the necessary facts and base content that they need BEFORE they embark on any HOTS tasks. I've found that s's that have a firm grasp on the background content are better critical thinkers. #aussieED
A4) Our classroom is gradeless, but students self-report grades at the end of semester. Collecting evidence of growth and achievement is a challenge. We use a select and defend model. The reporting conferences are exhausting, but almost always amazing. #aussieED
A2: Can vary between subjects. T/ core skills are transferable but the focus varies. In Design = 💭 about the users needs and projecting from this, whereas in LangnLit = the ability to read between the lines, understand 🎤 + make inferences based on text interpretation. #AussieED
A4 - Socratic method. See Think Wonder. Postive Negative Logic. 5Ws.
My favourite in SOR is to get them to argue and justify a pov they don't support
#aussieED
Begin lessons with a hook to provoke conversation between students about what they will be learning about. #aussieED
Use 'lucky sticks' just icy pole sticks with students names on and pull out sticks to get different students paired up or different students sharing.
A4 probably sounds very simplistic but I like to teach critical thinking in reading groups with the younger Ss. Really get them to engage & question “why?”, to predict & infer, to come up with plausible explanations #aussieEd
#aussieed A4 Flipgrid has changed my classroom. I own a grid that houses 50 critical thinking topics, my Ss access these, I explicitly teach in writing, they prepare their thinking & then they add their voice that they share with a Global Audience. https://t.co/YW6fKaEjrG
A4 - Every major activity, time is set aside for reflective discussion - what worked, what could be improved, why? what next and why? how might this be best achieved? Then, where's the coffee? #aussieED
A5: Fact check using multiple other sources (not just headlines or the first 2 lines from a Google preview), check sample sizes and methods of data #AussieEd
A4 Flipped learning is great for CT, watch/analyse/evaluate put into practice A good LMS should provide all the tools, but adding like Google forms, sheets, slides are useful too #AussieEd
A5 #aussieEd Is it primary or secondary source of evidence? Are there multiple sources? If a website, what's the URL? What's the agenda behind the author? HIstory is written by winners...
Q5 flows nicely with the others we have had so far... Q5. Students often have difficulty understanding strong vs. weak evidence. How do you help students evaluate quality of evidence? #aussieED
I'll be honest - I don't think even adults have adapted to the exponential rise of information and how to filter it all effectively. There's a whole bunch of stuff involved here around filter bubbles and echo chambers that we need to start thinking about too. #aussieed
Q5 flows nicely with the others we have had so far... Q5. Students often have difficulty understanding strong vs. weak evidence. How do you help students evaluate quality of evidence? #aussieED
Our class in only in our second year. Piloted a “trial” last year. Starting to spread across the rest of our school this year. Not so much in the grading less side, but the focus on relationships, feedback, authentic assessment etc. #aussieED
A5 Everyone has trouble distinguishing strong and weak evidence. This a problem of a lack of diversity of experience/development, not a problem of content/tool/delivery/instruction. #aussieED
A5: I guess its about finding more than one source to back your thinking. 'I read it on the facebook’ doesn’t cut it for me. Show me more. Give me more evidence and we can go from there! #aussieED
A3 - Info without context can provide a real road block to thinking critically. I guess the goal is to empower students to attempt to fill their own context gaps in these situations. #aussieed
So very true. I have been caught out with posts that I read on FB/Twitter & take for gospel. I now read everything before I comment/share!! Hate looking like a fool!! #aussieED
Whole school approaches are so important for Ss to really develop depth in their understanding of #criticalthinking skills. It means everyone is speaking the same language & ensures practice throughout schooling! #aussieEd
A5: Who is the author? Are they qualified/ experienced in this area? Who is posting this content? Is it a credible source - separate into primary and secondary. #aussieED
A5 Model excellent resources with thorough analysis. Then provided good quality databases and resources for Ss to utilise for getting evidence for their analysis! #aussieed
#aussieed A4 Kids need an authentic audience to listen to their thinking & be available to accept feedback. Ts need to realise the responsibility to the Ss. All Classrooms need to be using the https://t.co/scKZYyOq0L these get kids thinking about making change.
A4 - Love using Google Forms to act as a way to drive collaboration as well as driving questions that Ss can research to find the best answer. Also started using @Flipgrid recently which is quite fun to use for both me and my Ss #aussieED
A5. Scaffold! Begin with very obvious and then less and less obvious. Also get students to create their own strong and weak evidence in groups. Lots of fun #aussieED
Explicitly teach the intricacies of Google - use of Tools, Scholar, Books, reading level etc. Explain domains and teach referencing. I find if a student knows I'm going to check references they take greater care over sources #aussieED
And the library 😁
By the way, I'm loving that someone with an avatar featuring Mulder is leading a critical thinking chat. Critical thinking often seems crazy to everyone else! #aussieED
Ok... I have decided to skip Q6 as ideas have come up throughout all our other responses to Q 1-5, so going to jump to our last question for tonight!! Thanks everyone for sharing your ideas! #aussieED
A5- Get them to explain the evidence in their own words, get's them thinking about what they have found and whether it will be good enough evidence. #aussieED
Our class in only in our second year. Piloted a “trial” last year. Starting to spread across the rest of our school this year. Not so much in the grading less side, but the focus on relationships, feedback, authentic assessment etc. #aussieED
A5: When researching online, we try and make sure that students understand to use multiple sources to determine if the facts are true and also that the site they find information on is credible (for example not relying on wikipedia). #aussieED
A5 I ask: Who provided it? Who is for? Who benefits? Basically follow the money. This could be an Etruscan carving or 'The Scottish Play' or a banana (and yes I've used all three in my teaching as 'evidence'). #aussieED
#aussieed A5 Model, Model, Model there is no other way. We need to model what weak and strong look like and we have to up the accountability and expectations. Don't settle for weak expect strong & provide feedback regularly.
#aussieed A5 From primary talk to the kids about purpose and audience. What information from what source will convince me? their parents? the principal? etc
#aussieED Q5: Curiosity and open-mindedness are essential dispositions for students as they discover important and relevant information and sort the true from the false.
Maybe. Actually, definitely if those in power are marking the test. If the disadvantaged are marking the test.. actually scratch that they never do. #aussieED
#aussieed A5 Provide them with a forum to share their voice and know they are listened to. If you are not on https://t.co/XXw5vItsT7 you are missing out. Please inbox me and if you are interested and I can provide you with a 45 day flipgrid classroom trial code for free.
A3: Moving to self-managed, independent critical thinking. ⏰ to ponder and reflect on an idea outside of thinking routines. I do 💛 thinking routines, but I’m grappling with whether the overuse of these hinder student-designed ways of thinking? #AussieED
Q7. One important aim of schooling should be to create a climate that evokes children’s sense of wonder & inspires their imagination to soar. How can we ensure that 'creativity' and 'critical thinking' co-exist? #aussieED
A5) A t that is an expert and knows alot. From there, the t can provide good and bad evidence based on the content of the domain and s's can see the difference. A smart t with up to date domain knowledge is often overlooked in todays progressive education world #aussieED
A3: How can we get students to create personalised approaches to critical thinking? How can we help them make their unique thinking approaches visible? #AussieED 🖍
Something I use with students to check if they have enough strong evidence to support their answer. It's evidence within a text but thought it was too cute not to share. #bubblepolice#aussieED#NAPLAN
If they have used a reference that was used to create the Wikipedia entry, then yes. I often tell them to use Wikipedia as a start to give them an overview & direct them in the right direction #aussieED
Im not a fan of using it, We have encouraged them to use tools such as including 'for kids' when searching information on google and also tips to identify if the site is credible but for younger students, we have given them a list of sites they can use. #aussieED
It’s so important in today’s day and age. People can create content and it can spread in an instant. Did you see the hoax about he death of Sylvester Stallone? https://t.co/A7BHyMVcjL So important for young people to analyse and assess before sharing! #aussieED
A7 #aussieED I think that comes down to creating a supportive environment where everyone has a voice and is respected. All need to feel free to be brave in their ideas, think outside the box, accept feedback and have high expectations of self and others.
Q7. One important aim of schooling should be to create a climate that evokes children’s sense of wonder & inspires their imagination to soar. How can we ensure that 'creativity' and 'critical thinking' co-exist? #aussieED
If you want kids to be able to think critically and creatively, do all you can to ensure they know plenty about the domain in which you expect them to display these skills. If they don’t know much, don’t expect much #AussieEd
Q7. One important aim of schooling should be to create a climate that evokes children’s sense of wonder & inspires their imagination to soar. How can we ensure that 'creativity' and 'critical thinking' co-exist? #aussieED
A7- Get them up and moving active bodies always get the creative juices flowing. Let them get creative with how they present their findings, even if it means that they put some imagination into the findings. #aussieED
A7: Don't diminish the role of the Creative Arts. Start to remember that placing knowledge into subjects silos is a social construct; all knowledge interlinks. #aussieED
A7 leadership, leadership, leadership! School leaders must aim to get everyone on board with this it has to be a whole-school@approach. The language we use in schools must also reflect this. Teachers also have to be critical thinkers in all aspects of our profession #AussieED
A7: By making our summative assessment items open-ended (or low threshold, high ceiling) and authentic, rather than dishing out tasks where the kids know how to play for an A rather than investing in it wholly #AussieEd
Q7. One important aim of schooling should be to create a climate that evokes children’s sense of wonder & inspires their imagination to soar. How can we ensure that 'creativity' and 'critical thinking' co-exist? #aussieED
A7 I have to say a good Library Makerspace to allow Ss to create, discover, invent and think critically about processes and outcomes!! Heaps of learning and FUN ! #aussieedhttps://t.co/xLTVHYX5WA
#aussieed A7 Step out of your comfort zone and teach the curriculum your way. I push the boundaries but I never step over the line. It's Ok to be different.
A7 Creativity and CT are perfect buddies, Yin and Yang, night and day, we should encourage both by everything posted tonight, cant@have one without the other #AussieEd
A7: By teaching the ability to distinguish between the two. Creativity is great. Knowing the difference between satire and truth is far more important. #aussieEDhttps://t.co/vsWFaWIIid
A7 - Provide an environment that allows Ss to feel that their questions help others and that creativity is embraced by all. Questions by all can be answered by all - Why, How, What and Where #aussieED
A7 - knowledge is sexy.
We all know it and kids get it. Okay, maybe 'sexy' isn't appropriate terminology here but Ss are fascinated when they learn something fascinating. That blends creativity and critical thinking #aussieED
#AussieEd Going to have to clock off now - got a heap of work to do before bed! Thanks for a great chat. Will be very useful for my Visible Thinking training this week! Goodnight all.
