#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?
Hi everyone! Melissa from Nebraska, 11-12 ELA. Favorite card game: Apples to Apples. If it's traditional deck of cards, probably call your partner pitch. #games4ed
Used to play Canasta with my Grandpa. Stopped playing bcause my sister would ask to be cuddled so she could peek at Grandpa's cards. #solongago#games4ed
A1) I usually use card games to do factual content learning- such as, definition... I have also used Apples to Apples but "science"-fied, it. #games4ed
A1: I've done something like vocab connections with cards that have the words, random pics, random examples...they try to connect all their cards. #games4ed
A1 - Generally with math stations or as ice breakers and brain breaks. Looking to incorporate These as an integral part of the game in the future. #games4ed
A1 - (not really an answer, but...) Teaching CS in University, we often encountered students who don't know the makeup of a standard deck of cards (which is often used for probability exercises). #games4ed
A1: Playing cards in math. The game war for demonstrating lesser or greater than. Used for addition, subtraction and multiplication. Using Uno cards to practice reading numbers to 1000. #games4ed
A1 Ss design Pokemon cards. Biology makes Biomes for Energy, Zoology makes real life animals and taxonomic levels for Stages. I just got a version of "Pokezoo" professionally printed #games4ed
A2 - Honestly, one thing I love is that, because so few students have a ton of card game exp, the entry point is similar for most, and engagement is sky high for something new. #games4ed
A2: Benefits are active participation, partner or group learning, can be customized to fit your group of Ss. Challenges - having Ss play / know the rules and losing cards! #games4ed
A2: the requirements and rules can often be fairly simple and easy to implement (MTG & Yu-Gi-Oh aside). The key is making it accessible to all. If speed is a factor the same students are likely to dominate #Games4Ed
A2: There are a lot of social benefits from playing cards - Student interaction, relationship building, etc. Depending on the game there are also some critical thinking/strategizing skills (should I play this card or that card) #games4ed
A2 cont - Benefits - can be played pretty much anywhere, as long as you have the cards. Very portable. Classroom, bus, top of a mountain... Also, very tactile. #games4ed
A2: Card games spark some competition and the element of fun. You need to teach students what playing card games should “look” 👀 and “sound” like 👂🏽. For example, taking turns. #games4ed
A2: Haven’t played many card games in class, but makes me think how easy it would be to create one for content based on some favs! Wheels are turning! #Games4ed
I love Codenames. I tried to mod it for vocabulary...the kids tended to just avoid those words or save them for the end. Thinking about retrying it with Macbeth... #games4ed
A2: If it's an unfamiliar game you have to explain the rules and many games cap the number of players so you could need six or more sets of the cards for the whole class to play.
Benefits: More engagement and buy-in

Q4: Another way to put cards to use is with trading cards. Have you used trading cards in your classroom? How? Or how could you make a unit come alive with trading cards?
#games4ed
https://t.co/fw6Mo7dork will print custom cards for you. Hoping to be able to place an order soon. Printing fades on card stock after a little use. @canva is good for designing them (just use pixels instead of inches to avoid low image quality) #games4ed
A4 - Idea: Each concept is a card, goal is to collect all cards. If you "master" the same concept multiple times, you get mult copies, and then by "teaching" it to another S, can trade it for a skill you don't have (they must teach you). #games4ed

I have to fix a few typos and things my students caught (gotta love it when they catch my mistakes), but I'll put it on my website soon and let you know when I do. #games4ed
A5: Not fancy, but this year students can work for punch cards for Hot chocolate, snack access, teacher's chair, and wear your cap in class. They punch them on honor code--and it's worked GREAT! #games4ed
Hi #games4ed... Can't stay long... Need to go buy milk! This is an Avatar Card that mybstudents made about themselves. Name, guild name and class, avatar type, and a backstory!
And this is my power card post. I have a big EDURPG post in the works. My role playing game will have lots of items and cards! #games4edhttps://t.co/uqdP7W4LRw
A5 - currently using cards for items, power ups, random events, and creature battles. Trying to brainstorm a more organic way of incorporatingthese into classroom flow. #games4ed
A6) I haven't made any cards, but now that my gears are grinding, I think getting students to design the cards would be cool... especially those who have an interest in art! #games4ed
A6: The Game Crafter - great online site that will help you make cards and games, them send them to you! I have also made them in Google drawings then printed at Staples #games4ed
A6: After using Canva and online card creators, I'm now using Google Draw exclusively. Once printed on cardstock I laminate with matte contact paper. Works really well once dimensions are right. Lots of small motor skills practice in the cutting :) #games4ed
I love that I can do whatever I want, placing things wherever I want. I'm "supposed" to write a blog post about it this weekend. Learning curve for sure, but once you have it down it is very flexible. #games4ed
I'll check out the blog post when you get it done. I like Google Draw and think it's underused, but I myself don't push myself to use it more #games4ed
Gotta jet! Can’t wait to go back and reread when I have more time. Thanks to @mpilakow for leading a great chat. Goodnight from 🇨🇦! Follow and I’ll return the favour. #games4ed
Thanks for all the idea tonight everyone! I've definitely left with a few that I'll be using this semester! Have a great Friday and a great weekend!!! #games4ed
Think I already shared this with you, but if not ... https://t.co/83XSBLgemY ; All Google draw embedded on WIX with the technique I shared to create the clickable image #games4ed
