#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
A1. At the surface, teaching through relationships means putting the instruction second to building trust and empathy with the learners. #personalizedPD
A1. It means we meet our goals better when we bring in others. Teaching is not a solitary act, or at least it shouldn’t be. Our relationships benefit ourselves, our peers, and our students. #personalizedPD
A1: It makes me think of the statement ‘Maslow’s before Boom’s.’ We need to get each other on a higherman level first (as much as possible). #personalizedPD

A1: I think it means that there has to be some sort of connection in the learning process. It doesn't always look the same, but it's reciprocal, respectful, and relevant. #personalizedPD@jimknight99
A1 #personalizedPD it reminds me of a quote I heard in a TEDTalk, I think, “Students don’t work for teachers who don’t like them.” Not EVERY student will be a favorite, but ALL deserve our BEST! We must try to connect with ALL. Effort pay off.
A1: Relationships with each other, to the content, to current and future skills. Everything needs to be in context for it to make sense to us. To me, relationships are about making connections & we're in this together. #personalizedPD
A2. Yes. It is vital. We don’t all have the same story. These differences are important to meet their need. We have to teach for them, not at them. Plus understanding this diversity helps us all practice and model empathy. #personalizedpd
A2. Absolutely! Can't make content connect without knowing a learner's background. It's like putting up tile without mortar. (Sorry, remodeling over break) #personalizedPD
A2 It surely does! Storytelling is part of what makes us human. There's no better way to relate to others than to listen to their stories. Better relations build trust and consequently better learning opportunities. #personalizedPD
A2 it's important to be an active listener with your Ss. By sharing your Ss stories you are showing them that you care about their personal connections. Use this to make AWESOME learning experiences later on. Kids will appreciate the effort #personalizedpd
A2 We are in the people business. Without knowing the background of our students, how can we know them and develop relationships with them? #personalizedPD
Joining in late #personalizedpd , A2 Yes, because we need to understand where they come from, their unique experiences, to know how to connect with them, help them to connect w/content, more authentic learning,
A2: Important to recognize & care about each human's story. We all have a story. Sometimes we have to fight through it. Sometimes we have to share the good stuff. #personalizedPD#StoriesInEDU
A2. Absolutely! Can't make content connect without knowing a learner's background. It's like putting up tile without mortar. (Sorry, remodeling over break) #personalizedPD
A1: Teaching through relationships means knowing your people...what are their passions, how far can you push them, when is it necessary to back down? #personalizedPD
A2p2 So important to take time to learn about the Ss, build relatshps, we need to show that we care by getting to know each S, interacting and supporting them #personalizedpd
Listening is the first step in building that sense of belongingness for someone (Maslow's 3rd level). "The greatest compliment you can give anyone is to let them know that you listened." #personalizedPD
A2: Hearing the stories of other educators is one of the many reasons I like #firesidePD and #patioPD so much. Everything gets put into context. #personalizedPD
A2: I always like to learn and have students connect. I learn about them. Last year I had a girl come in and I greeted her with “Jambo”. While it wasn’t much to the class, it meant a lot to her. We said it every day we passed until she graduated. #personalizedPD
A3. It is just as important but i find it harder! We must play off the strengths of others to reach as many as possible. Sometimes though it is easier to stay on your own island. Gotta strive to be uncomfortable #personalizedpd
A3: I love that our @sjhcats lead learner, @MarkMccord10 shepherds through strengths based leadership. The only way to do that is to truly know the individual and their strengths. #personalizedPD
A3: Absolutely important to know the adults in the building. A brass band recognition for some might feel like nails on a chalkboard to others. Some might like PD games & others might just want it straight at 'em. #personalizedPD
A3 With all of the hours we spend at school with colleagues and Ss, it is just as important. We can all support each other and get so much further #personalizedPD
A3 we are human. We will put up barriers with people who we are unsure of their intentions. Teaching is a very personal profession. Listening to build trust and find common ground will help break down those barriers #personalizedPD
A3: I love that our @sjhcats lead learner, @MarkMccord10 shepherds through strengths based leadership. The only way to do that is to truly know the individual and their strengths. #personalizedPD
We must recognize our strengths, but it's in acknowledging our weaknesses is where we begin the journey to turn them into strengths. This gives the greatest potential for growth. #personalizedPD
A3: As an administrator, my staff has become my students...the impact I have on them will trickle down to the students through their rooms/actions #personalizedPD
A4: You never know someone's true potential or their heart behind what they do...everytime I learn something new abt someone I feel more dedicated to them. #personalizedPD
A3: My job is to be connected to staff and teachers first and kids second. It's a shift since I left the classroom. Sometimes it's more natural with kids! :) #educoach#personalizedPD
A4. FREE THERAPY! I kid but we do need shoulders and ears just as much as we need minds. We limit our tools in the toolkit by not having relationships with others. #personalizedpd
A4: If we don’t build those relationships, we take the haveman element out of education. We miss out bc we don’t grow from others, too. #personalizedPD
A3 building relationships is important but I’m not sure I can say that it’s as important as the relationships Ts build w Ss. Ts & Ss work together everyday-it’s different #personalizedPD
A3 @simonsinek said it best "Happy employees ensure happy customers. And happy customers ensure happy shareholders—in that order." Employees=Tt Customers=Ss Shareholders=parents #personalizedPD
A4 coming from a @iamkidpresident standpoint..."be some body that makes everyone feel like a somebody" We might be the ear that teacher or student needs to shine. #personalizedPD

Game of Stories is a fantastic resource to highlight and celebrate the journeys of educators. Great for #personalizedPD, edcamps, patio on Friday night. https://t.co/bOS1xpyonq
#FOMO A4: If we don't have the relationships, we might miss what's going on in that classroom and in turn miss sharing it w/ someone else. We gotta' get connected & keep sharing. #personalizedPD
A4 if we don’t build relationships we fail to recognize the assets our participants come with. We aren’t able to leverage their background knowledge and tailor instruction to meet their needs. We have to know them to honor them #personalizedPD
A2 #personalizedPD Onlybif we want to make learning RELECANT/MEANINGFUL to them. If we place. I value in their stories, why would they! Wanna motivate a learner, LISTEN to him/her!
A5: Greet them, ask them questions, listen, genuinely care about their responses, and bring up topics again later. Oh and that goes for adults too! #personalizedPD
A5: There's nothing that builds relationships faster than authenticity...be real, laugh, have fun, have conversation that kids find relevant #personalizedPD
A5 Build in time to bond with Ss into class. Listen to stories, go to soccer games etc. There are so many ways to bond with Ss this builds the relationships #personalizedPD
A5. I like to give them avenues to engage with me. As a librarian, I never try to push a book on a kid first. First, i want them to tell me about them & their likes. I want to convey that i can be trusted and helpful. Too often adults aren’t viewed that way by Ss #personalizedpd
A5: listen to & observe S, ask questions, connect to personal interests outside of academics, attend events, Read T in me always recommends books! #personalizedPD

A5 value students’ identities by asking questions abt their lives, families, hobbies. Encourage and embrace their individuality. Confer frequently with students-smaller setting #personalizedPD
A3 #personalizedPD It would be hypocritical, to me, to expect Ts to do something Leaders aren’t willing to do themselves! Model what you expect. If Ts see Leaders doing it, they will be more inclined to follow suit. No one likes a “Do as I say not as I do type of leader.”
A4: Relationships with Ss and Ts allow them to connect and be engaged and immersed because you worked and built a bridge to them. It means something. #personalizedPD
A5 I start the year getting to know them, do icebreakers, fun activ, interact and greet them at the door, make sure to engage in conversations, laugh, find out about their interests, and make time for peers to work together #personalizedpd
It's time for the New Year #Lurker shoutout!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
Enjoy this picture of the first #personalizedPD chat, circa 2015.
Raise a glass to education and share your ideas with the group. Join in, or not, it's cool.
A5 share personal likes and interests. I would tell "secrets" to my students that I didn't share with my colleagues. I would always model my thinking to show that I make mistakes ALL the time. Be real and genuine. It's obvious if you're not. Ss will buy in #personalizedpd
Lunch time is when we build relationships. We try to keep it light and not talk about kids as much as possible. We all value just getting to know each other more :0) #personalizedPD
So fun to share stories with 'Game of Stories.' It's available on Amazon & totally worth it. https://t.co/KAd587v1s3 Super conversations start here! #personalizedPD
A6. By trying to notice them. There is little worse in teaching than feeling ignored or unseen. I try to SEE all that come in the library and compliment and engage with them. I also try to ask for help (rather am trying to). #personalizedpd
A4 #personalizedPD We miss the opportunity to CONNECT! Life is about connecting! If you did not get into education to MAKE A DIFFERENCE, why did you? It’s ALL about CONNECTING- Humans need connections with others l. Children need as many + adult as possible!
A6: It's in the details, hold the door open, call people by name, be present. Make sure your routine has you regularly visible for those oh so important short talks. #personalizedpd
I only pose the question because I see it a lot on Twitter and wish to shift this thinking. Leader is not a job title. It must be bestowed upon us, and if empowered correctly, ANY educator is worthy of the label. #personalizedPD
A7. Listening to listen for others and not listening just for myself. I am guilty of waiting for my “moment” and not empathically listening. This benefits only me and I am trying to fix it! #personalizedpd
A7 Having enough time honestly, trying to be consistent, set aside specific times to catch up, email, Vox, greet at door, depending on if Ss, Ts, #personalizedpd
A7 One challenge I face is that I want to help you get to where you want to be today. Some people need more time to get used to ideas of #personalizedPD over time.
I see subcategories of Leader (teacher-leader, student-leader). Are those leadership roles an y less important? If not, then why the hyphen if it's not attached to a title? #personalizedPD
A7 I am only one person and there are so many staff, teachers, and students. I don't feel like I can have the same kind of relationship with everyone, but I think that's OK, too. Did I even answer the question? #personalizedPD
A6 #personalizedPD Do things for them and with them OFTEN. CELEBRATE success at EVERY opportunity, and there are many in EVERY school tuned in! I seek support in finding things to celebrate from ALL.
A8: Nothing could have fueled my fire more than the amazing visit we had from @gcouros right before the break...helped me to stay the path! #personalizedPD
Super to see you here Chuck. You are great people.
If you are a #personalizedPD person or a social studies person or a person, you should follow Chuck.
A8 For the new year I am excited for more opportunities to connect with great educators both in my building and though this #personalizedPD chat. Every chat new, amazing educators join us and we all benefit.
Oh interesting. I haven’t seen that used commonly. Maybe it’s to define the leader? But I don’t think it’s necessary if it could be interpreted as a hierarchy of leadership. #personalizedpd
A7 #personalizedPD In a large school that is departmentalized, it saddens me that there are people in the building that don’t know all of their co-workers and what they do! Haven’t solved it yet! Mix them up as often as possible.
A8: most excited to fuel & finish storing our school’s #personalizedPD effort! Also, I want to take time to write about the experience & lessons learned
A5: I attend their athletic events, make sure the only conversations we have are not only academic, notice when they get a hair cut.. I want them to know I care about THEM and teaching them #personalizedPD
Thanks, @MrsFaubs, for the chat tonight! Really appreciated the questions to generate reflection. I've already added many new faces to my PLN, but can't wait to go back through and see if I missed anyone! #personalizedPD

As we continue on with the chat for the next 15 minutes, we are always looking for guest moderators to lead the chat!
#personalizedPD has been the first chat for a lot of educators. Connect with me if you are interested.
A8 #personalizedPD I have missed seeing Ss over the holidays and they return tomorrow! I want to be the BEST part of the day of as many Sa as possible. It starts when they walk through the door with a greeting. Can’t wait!

A8 Just excited for more opportunities to learn and grow with the Ss, PLN and for time to spend with PLN coming up at FETC and PETE&C, #personalizedpd at its finest :)
A8: New year excitement? Planning to stand my class on its head & change the starting focus for content. And starting some new things to connect Ts w/ each other to find out more & share our #personalizedPD opportunities. Always something new. #JustDoIt is not #oneword
A7 One of my challenges is that I open up and trust people very easily. I'm not looking to change, it's just that others are not the same for a variety of reasons.
I enjoy building relationships and I look forward to the time when others trust me as much.
#personalizedPD
A3: Absolutely! The culture, the community is important... at some point, we will all need support or a sounding board! It's also important to model for students #personalizedPD
Same here with the writing goal. I did once over the short break, but that's not enough for me. I have more mental index cards with things I need to write for me. But it's a good start since the last time was summer. #JustDoIt#personalizedPD
Completely agree. I would always rather trust than think bad thoughts about others/intentions. I feel bad for those that do feel that way. Some bad things must have happened.
#personalizedPD
Yes, for sure. It can be hard to hold back when you know what is out there for educators and the ideas, tools, resources that they would enjoy and benefit from but they are not ready, yet.
