This is the official Twitter account for #OklaEd, thehashtag that brings OK educators together. #OklaEd is not political & promotes constructive dialogue.
Tyler Bridges, @k20center Associate Director of School and Community Partnerships. I will be voting at Horizon Pointe Church bright and early on Tuesday morning! #oklaed
Shari Gateley, 11th Grade ELA, Putnam City West High School. My polling place is a church right across the street from my house, but I voted absentee b/c I will be out of town Tuesday. #OklaEd
I'm Gentner Drummond, a businessman/attorney/rancher and candidate for Attorney General here in Oklahoma. My polling place is in Hominy, but I voted absentee already. #oklaed
For anyone new to the chat, we will follow the traditional Q1/A1 format. Please answer with that prefix so we know what question you are answering.
Let's go! #oklaed#okleg
I'm Gentner Drummond, a businessman/attorney/rancher and candidate for Attorney General here in Oklahoma. My polling place is in Hominy, but I voted absentee already. #oklaed
A1: Advocacy should be done with integrity. Please don’t say you support all people, give kindness, and such when your life doesn’t even reveal that. This topic of splitting families has really hit home, because some are doing the opposite with their toxic behaviors. #oklaed
A1: Build the RELATIONSHIP. Don't expect to get a response when all you do is yell. Communicate, build trust, and bring solutions to the table! #oklaed#okleg
A1: It is intimidating at first to go talk to a legislator or get involved in things that may be outside your comfort zone (like door knocking or calling legislators.) Do it anyway, you'll find it isn't as scary as you thought! #oklaed
A1: Advocacy is ongoing. It is important to get the truth out about #oklaed because there is often a lot of misinformation about common education in Oklahoma.
A1 Establish a relationship with your reps by sharing the issues you agree with their decisions and thank them for it. Doing so makes it easier to hear you when you disagree #oklaed
A1: Advocacy is the foundation of our system of government. I believe too many elected officials forget they work for us, not the other way around. #oklaed
A1: advocacy.. is about relationships first, then compromise and collaboration. Most of all advocacy is about passion. What are you passionate about? Do that! I am passionate about helping children and democracy. #oklaed
Q1/A1 The students. I want people to know about my kids. Next would be the mandates we are to uphold with little to no funding. Last, would be the equity. Education, great education should be for all! #oklaED#okleg
A1: Educators don’t need to be in this advocacy alone. Business owners, clergy, parents, grandparents, and community organizations all have a role to play. When we stand together our voices are louder. #oklaed
Sage advice, especially the need to bring solutions. Elected officials are so used to the yelling, it's often a surprise when they meet someone who wants to get something done. #oklaed
Oh, and my polling place is the Canadian County Election Board office where I voted early last Thursday. I'm a D. I told them I'd be back Friday, Saturday and Tuesday, they were not amused but I took cinnamon rolls so it was ok. #oklaed
A2) Rome wasn’t built in a day, so... we as teachers have to be relentlessly active! It’s going to take time, relationships, communication, and respect. #oklaed
A2: Stay classy and professional. When you are speaking with aggression and hate, you lose your credibility. If you stoop to someone’s level, you’re no better. #oklaed
We have got to stay engaged. With anything, when the momentum dies down, you go back to being in a rut. Stay involved with the goings on with our legislature. #oklaed
A2 - We get involved like never before! We hold signs, knock doors, educate ourselves, VOTE, get people registered - all of this - rain, snow, or shine! #OklaEd
A2 Continue sharing concerns and what you think needs to be focused on, pay attention to proposed legislation when it comes up, and politely point out how it impacts positively and negatively #oklaed
A1) Advocacy is about learning as much as teaching. An effective advocate understands the legislative process and issues, and is willing to learn more every day. #OklaEd
A2: Keep the conversation going. Talk about #OklaEd issues with everyone who will listen at church, in the store, with your neighbors, at community forums, in meetings, and with your family.
A2 Stay involved and communicate with each other and our elected officials. Don't wait until its a crisis to make yourself and your views known. #oklaed
A2) We continue by reading, listening, fact-checking, conversing about our profession, showing pride in our profession, and once again, fact-checking. #oklaed
A1) #oklaed Advocacy is talking to people about what is important to you and why, being knowledgeable about your topic, and continuing to monitor current events and policy changes. Get information from many sources.
Q2/A2 Don't let the fire die out! We have to keep united as much as we can. Build advocacy groups with teachers, parents, and community. Stay in contact with your Reps. #oklaED#okleg
A2: Recognize "#oklaed" achieved a HUGE win this year. We must now pursue common-sense solutions people can understand and support going forward. There are realities that must be addressed b/c support is eroding.
Sounds simple but the biggest one is vote! Also, support those who support you. That doesn’t always mean money. Mostly it’s helping knock doors, talk to neighbors or even offering encouragement. All are important #oklaed
Ditto @ShariGateley while also adding how we need to help others get involved too. I was shocked at how many people were not involved before. Democracy is only democracy when everyone is involved. #oklaED
A2 - We get involved like never before! We hold signs, knock doors, educate ourselves, VOTE, get people registered - all of this - rain, snow, or shine! #OklaEd
A2) Continue to support new teachers in learning about the process , there was so much education for teachers that had not been politically active before ! #OklaED
A1) remember that it's ok to laugh and advocate. No need to lose your sense of humor. Policy makers are people first. They may not always see things our way but most of them are really good peeps...I said most... #oklaed
Staying involved, staying informed, tracking votes & making sure the candidates elected are representing the people in their area well. Hold them accountable. #Oklaed
A2. Keep the main thing the main thing. Public education serves 700k kids in Oklahoma. We’re not really advocating about policies and laws. It’s about them. #oklaed
A2. We will need to be purposeful and do advocacy w intentionality and laser focus. We need common messages, clear about the ask, move toward solutions, let go of blame. Keep students and their benefit of the ask as a central theme. #Oklaed
Sounds simple but the biggest one is vote! Also, support those who support you. That doesn’t always mean money. Mostly it’s helping knock doors, talk to neighbors or even offering encouragement. All are important #oklaed
A2. Constant conversation for those who represent us - all of those who represent us - and hold them accountable. Our first opportunity is coming this week. #oklaed
A2: well Norman PEN has formed committees and have been having meetings ever since the walkout. Over 10 diff committees. We haven’t stopped at all. Still going strong. #oklaed
A2. We will need to be purposeful and do advocacy w intentionality and laser focus. We need common messages, clear about the ask, move toward solutions, let go of blame. Keep students and their benefit of the ask as a central theme. #Oklaed
Q3: Let’s switch to the more political side of things. What are your political non-starters as an Oklahoman? i.e. what is immediately unacceptable to you? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A2: for the first time I am actually helping a candidate with door to door campaigning. This is a huge help and one I encourage more people to do. You can also vote and get everyone you know to vote. #oklaED
A2) Continue to build real relationships. Lawmakers mostly rely on experts they can trust. Trust comes with consistent behavior over time. Most of us must realize they are not nails and we are not hammers. #oklaed
Thank you to all of you that are running for office and think it important enough to participate in this chat tonight. It speaks highly of your intent and priorities. Wish all statewide office seekers were involved #oklaed
I agree with the comment about personal relationships and would pair that with being proactive. It makes sense to me that if I am advocating then I should be on the front line leading versus reacting to a situation. HD31 hopeful and thanks for the invite. #Oklaed
A2. We will need to be purposeful and do advocacy w intentionality and laser focus. We need common messages, clear about the ask, move toward solutions, let go of blame. Keep students and their benefit of the ask as a central theme. #Oklaed

A2: well Norman PEN has formed committees and have been having meetings ever since the walkout. Over 10 diff committees. We haven’t stopped at all. Still going strong. #oklaed
A3: As an educator, anything to do with vouchers or a further erosion of funding for #oklaed is pretty much a no-go for me. Also, we have lifelong health issues in my household w/my wife and daughter, and healthcare has rapidly become my #1. #okleg
Q3: Let’s switch to the more political side of things. What are your political non-starters as an Oklahoman? i.e. what is immediately unacceptable to you? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
Q3: Let’s switch to the more political side of things. What are your political non-starters as an Oklahoman? i.e. what is immediately unacceptable to you? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
Thank you to all of you that are running for office and think it important enough to participate in this chat tonight. It speaks highly of your intent and priorities. Wish all statewide office seekers were involved #oklaed
A3 65% plan is a clear indicator that you don't understand all the critical services that can be eliminated in many large area, small population districts #oklaed
A3) It’s unacceptable to me when candidates tell you how things should be instead of asking for input of the people they want to represent. More discussion less grandstanding. #oklaed
Q3: Let’s switch to the more political side of things. What are your political non-starters as an Oklahoman? i.e. what is immediately unacceptable to you? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A:3 Pols who blame school "admin" for the budget crisis. As if hiring an extra class principal broke the budget instead of five years of structural state deficits in the billions of dollars. #oklaed
Q3: Let’s switch to the more political side of things. What are your political non-starters as an Oklahoman? i.e. what is immediately unacceptable to you? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
leaning very hard on "conservative Christian values" without being specific as to what that actually means. To me, conservative Christian values should include supporting public education, but not everyone agrees on that. #oklaed
A3: Refusal to compromise, party bashing, inability to find common ground are big stinkers and unattractive qualities in candidates. As for issues, Publc #OklaEd is the cornerstone of our democracy to be built upon, not eroded.
Q3: Let’s switch to the more political side of things. What are your political non-starters as an Oklahoman? i.e. what is immediately unacceptable to you? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A3: keeping kids in cages is a huge NO for me. I can’t even think of vouchers right now. As an advocate for children I want all kids reunited with their parents. That’s how you get my vote! #oklaed
Thank you to all of you that are running for office and think it important enough to participate in this chat tonight. It speaks highly of your intent and priorities. Wish all statewide office seekers were involved #oklaed
Politics in the end is about people. So two major non starters for me. 1. Lack of compromise. The principle of compromise is different then compromising principle. 2. Grandstanding. It’s not about selfish ambition. What we need is results. #oklaed
Q3: Let’s switch to the more political side of things. What are your political non-starters as an Oklahoman? i.e. what is immediately unacceptable to you? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A3 My politicial non-stopper was my senator who voted against everything everytime that would give teachers a raise. I have his record and will make it my busiess to insure all teachers in his counties know that record. #oklaed
A3: My non starter is divisive politics. Us versus Them. Politics at it's best is working together to develop policy that is beneficial to the community as a whole. This does happen, it just doesn't make the news. It needs to happen more often. #oklaed
A3) For me it's anything born in the back room of an out of state think tank. And believe it or not, it doesn't matter which side of the aisle it was birthed. I'm about Oklahomans making policy for Oklahomans. #oklaed
Hi #oklaed friends! Sorry I’m late...had my colleagues over for dinner. 🙂
I’m Elizabeth, chair of Education at @utulsa. I’m voting in House district 69 on Tuesday and SUPER excited to vote to unseat my incumbent rep.
A3: I’m not a single-issue voter; not even w/educ. But I am a parent and an educated voter, so if a candidate doesn’t show clear commitment to #oklaed then I don’t care about their other positions.
A3: If you act as if you know rather than wanting to find out more about something unfamiliar to you, I pretty much become jaded very quickly. #askquestions#oklaed
Tyler we're very similar. Anything removing money from public ed is a no. My wife has ms and medical is a must. Anything removing from mental health as well is a no. #oklaed
Q3: Let’s switch to the more political side of things. What are your political non-starters as an Oklahoman? i.e. what is immediately unacceptable to you? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
I have to say based on my experience on this my first campaign, I want to see less fighting amongst individuals and more focus on fighting the issues. #Oklaed
Q3: Let’s switch to the more political side of things. What are your political non-starters as an Oklahoman? i.e. what is immediately unacceptable to you? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
Q4: We likely have a lot of #okleg hopefuls watching & participating tonight. So, from your personal perspective, rank the top 3 issues facing Oklahoma during the next legislative cycle. #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
It is unacceptable for a legislator to act as though they are experts and will not listen to the people who live the life. Also, anyone who will place any political conviction over our kids will not have my support. #oklaed
A1. I think it’s important to know share memorable facts and an accompanying example/story with reps. Want them to be able share what you’ve said to others. #oklaed
A3: not for public education; poor voting record; latching on to other politician’s coat tails to “partner up”, they must be able to stand on their own 2 feet on the issues; blah non-specific answers leaving the door open for them switch sides #Oklaed
Q3: Let’s switch to the more political side of things. What are your political non-starters as an Oklahoman? i.e. what is immediately unacceptable to you? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
Well said... ditto... school “business” is far more complex than most legislators fully understand. As @joy4ok we still have to find commonalities. Stay focused on our “why” = students! #oklaed
#oklaed A3: Nonstarter for me is the unwillingness to listen to others, or even try to work with others toward solutions. All or nothing is no way to govern.
Tammie Reynolds running for HouseD63. Q3) Having a policy of voting no on every revenue bill. Not standing up for the people in my district. Vouchers. #oklaed
A3: anything conspiracy theory-like (e.g., anti-Common Core, etc.) and making general, uninformed promises (e.g., eliminate state testing, etc.).
#Oklaed
Q3: Let’s switch to the more political side of things. What are your political non-starters as an Oklahoman? i.e. what is immediately unacceptable to you? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A4: 1) Finding funding sources for year 2 and beyond 2) Investing in improving ALL schools as the fastest way to reduce incarceration rates, poverty, crime & increase economic development 3) Protecting local control #oklaed
Q4: We likely have a lot of #okleg hopefuls watching & participating tonight. So, from your personal perspective, rank the top 3 issues facing Oklahoma during the next legislative cycle. #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
Cari is the coolest leader ever! I just wondered what the different topics were. She should leading the state, not just Norman. She’s too good. #oklaED
A2. The momentum continues when we all vote Tuesday and keep voting in every election. Often, reps only listen when they know they are accountable. If we don’t vote, they won’t think they are accountable to educators as a whole. #oklaed
Have I told you how much I love you today!! That comment is why I love you so much. It is one of the reasons why I am still bitter about Fallin. When she was a rep, she wouldn’t even here my views about tech ed. #oklaED
A4:
1. Continuing to fund #oklaed students and teachers at appropriate levels.
2. Staving off the continual erosion of statewide revenue sources.
3. Building political consensus about what is good for OKLAHOMA, not about nat'l viewpoints.
#okleg
Q4: We likely have a lot of #okleg hopefuls watching & participating tonight. So, from your personal perspective, rank the top 3 issues facing Oklahoma during the next legislative cycle. #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A3. Grandstanding for personal gain 👎🏼 or attention! Those unwilling to understand the complexities of our “world” or the implications of blanket statements, that will “heal” all the wounds. #oklaed
A4. 1) State budget (We must fund ALL core services. We cannot rob Peter to pay Paul). 2) Incarceration rates. The prison system is not a viable substitute for mental health care. 3) Human rights for everyone (Looking at SB1140 and everyone who voted for it 👀) #oklaed
Q4:
1) Funding core government services
2) Public school funding in particular including competitive teacher salaries
3) Expanding access to quality health care
#oklaed
It has a lot to do with relationships. I live in a rural district and many of the teachers that visited me at the Capitol, I had known my whole life. I have many schools in my district and continuing that open relationship is important. I think we made progress this year.
A4: First, teacher shortage crisis and related funding for #OklaEd schools. Second, health care. Third, criminal justice reform that incarcerates fewer citizens and immigrants.
Q4: We likely have a lot of #okleg hopefuls watching & participating tonight. So, from your personal perspective, rank the top 3 issues facing Oklahoma during the next legislative cycle. #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A3. A few deal-breakers for me:
- voted against (or is against) any of the teacher pay legislation and accompanying revenue measures
- pro-vouchers
- doesn’t consult or listen to actual educators when forming opinions
#oklaed
Thank you to all of you that are running for office and think it important enough to participate in this chat tonight. It speaks highly of your intent and priorities. Wish all statewide office seekers were involved #oklaed

A4 Sustainable revenue, Comparable taxes on business and industry (charging less isn't ideal when it hurts our workforce by cutting education and critical services), Don't put frivolous bills on the floor (we don't need anymore official state whatevers) #oklaed
A4. We are electing leaders. Not purely policymakers. I led prayer today that we’d raise up leaders for Oklahoma. Be thought leaders. Elevate the role of teachers. Challenge us to rise above dead last. #oklaed
YES! It is why I am campaigning for @DanielleSEzell. She listens and is familiar with a lot of issues including being an advocate for Ed, women’s rights, health care and prison reform #oklaED
A4. I would say the number one issue is generating enough revenue to meet the pressing education, health, and criminal justice issues facing our state. #oklaed

A4: 1. Regionally competitive funding for T pay and classrooms. 2. Access to mental health care services 3. Implement recommendations on criminal justice reform from task force. #oklaed#okleg
A4) Long range plan put forward by @joy4ok, Continue to pound away on the teacher shortage crisis, streamline RSA so 3rd graders don't continue to throw up. "Clean up in Classroom 1 please"... #oklaed
1. Continue stabilizing the budget while revenues are rising. Making sure extra revenues hit core services like #oklaed and roads and bridges. There was a good start but more to do! 2. Jobs and the Economy, need to keep up the momentum 3. Criminal Justice reform/public safety

Educated workforce? Support insidious that go beyond k12. Not every student needs college, but may want more education. We should work to make it financially possible without all of the crippling student loan debt that is be accumulated #oklaed
So true. I also hate they way it is also now not appropriate to pay sups for a job well done. Devon or Chesapeake CEO get 500 million in bonus and get a tax break!!! #oklaED
1) Promoting Economic growth
2)Continued support and improvement for education.
3)Audit and reform of state government and the flawed budgeting process
#Oklaed

I'm not a candidate for #OKleg , but from my perspective as an AG candidate, I see the need for openness and transparency in state government. Additionally, criminal justice reform and mental health funding will be critical issues to continue addressing. #oklaed
A4) Long range plan put forward by @joy4ok, Continue to pound away on the teacher shortage crisis, streamline RSA so 3rd graders don't continue to throw up. "Clean up in Classroom 1 please"... #oklaed
Greta question! Don't listen to what people say or what you may have perceived about a Rep or Sen from the walkout. Call them now, if they don't answer, return your call or listen...then make a change.
My number 918-759-0178
#Oklaed
Late to the game A4: 1. funding the budget 2. Making sure we have a strong budget supporting all Oklahomans 3. Funding the budget (oh did I already mention that) 4. No unfunded mandates #oklaed
A4)
1. Funding Oklahoma education, so our students are competitors and our teachers stay in OK!
2. Oklahoma Justice Reform
3. Accessible Healthcare
#oklaed
A4: Education, Education Education. Investing in #OklaEd invests in our state. Our prison populations will go down and schools will be more equipped to help our Ss struggling academically and emotionally. An educated population produces economic growth.
I know you made a deal. You explained that to me explicitly. And then I went to the senate side and they explained a deal they made on another bill. That’s where I lose hope. Why all the deals? Just do what’s right. But I don’t want to bog you down now. We can talk later.#oklaed
A4: No. 1 PUBLIC education on the student/teacher level - not the state agency. No. 2 a legislation that actually works together to represent the majority of the people of Oklahoma. No. 3 Ensuring financial accountability & public trust in the okla leg #Oklaed
Q4: We likely have a lot of #okleg hopefuls watching & participating tonight. So, from your personal perspective, rank the top 3 issues facing Oklahoma during the next legislative cycle. #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
I am so frustrated with the ads and some of the mailers. Everyone is just saying buzz words. Their definition of conservative may not be my definition. What do you believe???? That is what I need to know. #oklaed
#oklaed Q5: Honestly #JRobgov our High School AP Governent Class. Their research is on point and I love hearing/reading the passion they have developed throughout the class.
A4: Most pressing issue is long-term budgeting stability. We can't focus on education once every ten years and expect to increase student achievement and keep teacher pay at a competitive level. #oklaed
Q4: We likely have a lot of #okleg hopefuls watching & participating tonight. So, from your personal perspective, rank the top 3 issues facing Oklahoma during the next legislative cycle. #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A5: The experts in the district I hope to represent, then experts outside the district. Also look for solid data from various sources to make sure I'm seeing a complete picture. #oklaed#okleg
A5 I usually look at facebook or twitter because everything shared there is true isn't it? Seriously, I do see what everyone is sharing and then start fact checking the heck out of it. #oklaed
A4) 1.#okleg makes their tax policies equitable. All should pay their fair share. 2. Legislate with compassion 3. Continue to fund and support public education. #oklaed
That trauma conference made this point so clear. Hence the title of our Summit in oct. “It starts here: trauma informed instruction.” I’m so proud of this project! #oklaED
I miss those days when comprise was the norm and what people accepted as the proper way to make policy. I don’t know when it changed but I want it to come back!!! #oklaED
A5) Besides reading many sources, I’ve learned to listen well by listening to my administration, talking to my peers, and talking and listening intently to other educators at meetings. #oklaed
A5) I always consult OCPA. They are always so truthful and never manipulate...no wait. Stop. Couldn't help myself. I consult Senator Lonnie Paxton first if I want to really know the truth. #oklaed
A5: I am fortunate to have many friends, family members, and colleagues who continually discuss with me important political issues facing our state. #oklaed
My husband and I also stopped by to say hello. He’s a CHA grad. 😉 A good friend cried lots of tears in your office. You do have an open communication policy. #oklaED

Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A5) All of the groups and google, but my husband! He is intelligent and has a bachelors and masters in political science, so we discuss issues. #oklaed
A5:
I like hearing from the folks at home. At the end of the day, their livelihoods are what is most important to me. If I’m not advocating for them at the Capitol, I’m not doing my job.
#oklaed
None of them are my party. I bought a house last year and it is the former owners party. I did reach out to mine. Most of them were at the walk out so it was easy to talk to them and find out what they believed #oklaED
A4: Recurring revenues for public education, Economic Development, Criminal Justice Reform for me. Coincidentally, all three are very much intertwined! #oklaED

A6: We continue to educate our area of influence and let them see our passion and know the truth about what is going on instead of a political spin. #oklaed
A5. Legislators I trust and have developed working relationships with over time, colleagues, professional organizations, state leaders, personal conversations go a long way to vet things - crucial conversations are key. Listen. listen. Read. Listen. Watch. Listen+watch! #oklaed
A6. This is hard - how do you convince someone that this is one of our foundational rights? It’s like we need to lose the right to vote to see how precious and important that right is. #oklaed
Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes

Education has to always be a priority because it isn't an expense it is an investment in our future. That is not a R or D issue it's an Okla issue.
#oklaed
A5b) It's always been best for me to try to keep positive two way (usually face to face) communication going. Sometimes it's not easy especially when there is disagreement on the core issues but being open to listen helps. Hard to do if your screaming. #oklaed
A6: the vote day in November should be a teacher holiday. If you really support educators you would make this happen. The problem is Ts switch jobs bc of pay and have to re register so this needs to be more expedient. We need leaders in schools. #oklaed
A6 Well, if the walkout didn't help maybe another one will. Hopefully, everyone knows we professional teachers are serious about the future of all students! #oklaED
Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
People don’t believe their vote matters! Maybe we can post a list of local elections won by just a few votes? Apathy on the whole tells us the lie that we can’t do anything. But we can! In fact, a few passionate people can change the world. #oklaed
Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
Apathy is always a silent killer, when individuals (teachers/education) are made a priority I would think this would move the needle. Also producing a product Oklahomans are proud of would prove beneficial #oklaed
Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
Q6: we must instill the importance of voting in your children and youth. I speak to every HS government class I’m invited to so they can hear about what I do and why it’s important for them to be involved in the local level! #oklaed
Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A6) Try to convince them that their voice can be heard; explain how voting makes a difference; drive them to the polls, stay with their kids; educate. #oklaed
Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A2: Finding allies who want to help Your cause. It can get lonely when you feel like you’re fighting alone. Work to find common ground w/ other constituencies & work together. Staying engaged from day1 by volunteering in elections and creating open dialogue from the start #oklaed
A4: #1 Prioritize education #2 Properly fund DHS #3 Educate teens and young adults about the negative side-effects drugs have on children. We need to break the cycles of trauma and poverty. #Oklaed
One of my favorite emails I get!! Highly encourage people to sign up to receive them. Was so sad when I got the information today on how we are number one for incarceration. Why can’t we be number 1 for good things???#oklaED
Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A6 Most people don't think their voice matters, but so many think that and don't realize together that they do matter. Getting people to realize they matter is the most critical issue. #oklaed
A6: More people have registered to vote in Oklahoma this year than ever in history. We MUST hold everyone accountable to vote. Be that friend. Text them, call them, DRIVE THEM! #oklaed#okleg
A6 - I think the walkout was eye-opening for a lot of people. I had young future Ts observe my classroom after who told me they didn’t realize how important it was to “be political.” It was also eye-opening for my students who are future voters. #OklaEd
Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
I am the son of two Oklahoma public school teachers, OEA and TCTA. For 15 consecutive years I have had 1-3 kids at Jenks PS. By any measure, I am advocate; I am a litigator #oklaed#oklaedvotes
A6) Remind each other, go together to vote- but I feel we may have a record number of teachers this year. Staying active and informed all year helps! #oklaed
I listen a great deal to constituents. I put my cell number on all my material so I have many that use it. I also like @nondocmedia and @mitchelltalks for non bias news. #oklaed
Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A6: We have to educate people on the voter turnout data. When they can see what happens when no one shows up, they will be more likely to vote. #oklaed
A6: I would love to hear honestly from Ts why they aren’t. Like if we could hear legitimate reasons it would help. I’ve never met an admin who didn’t let someone go when they did with responsibility. #oklaed
A6. This year, more than ever before, I am simply reminding people to vote as the day approaches. Even just posting on my neighborhood FB page to remind my neighbors and talking with them about it as we watch our kids play. #OklaEd
A6. Didn’t something happen back in April? Nah but really, I think the lack of compromise and outright disrespect teachers witnessed firsthand during the walkout has already lit a fire in thousands of teachers to be politically engaged. Now we need to harness the momentum #oklaed
A3: First, acknowledge and thank the allies we have in #okleg who have shown their unwavering commitment to #oklaed. Then, use our voice to vote and replace candidates that have not been so favorable.
A6. Continue to remind people to vote. Open dialogue about our own voting. Find ways to provide opportunity and flexibility so educators can vote. We have adjusted our calendar to do so 11/6. Consider: Have a competition., a watch party. Make it a BIG deal! Oh wait it is! #oklaed
When I was in elementary school, I was knocking on doors and waving in parades for my grandma (teacher/counselor) as he ran for House of Rep. It is in my blood to advocate! #oklaED
A6: have conversations with colleagues about educational issues going on at the state and local level. Teachers I know who don't vote, they don't vote because they don't feel informed enough. Empower them with knowledge! #oklaed
Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes

When he came to visit Plaza Towers, we hugged and took NO guns!! It was weird. At the time people said he’d take our crosses. He didn’t. He smelled good and was incredibly compassionate. #oklaED
Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A6: IDK … Hopefully, we will elect leaders on Tues & every election going forward who truly care about children. PLEASE go vote #oklaed, and take someone with you! #oklaed
I listen a great deal to constituents. I put my cell number on all my material so I have many that use it. I also like @nondocmedia and @mitchelltalks for non bias news. #oklaed
A5c) I lean hard on @mitchelltalks and @nondocmedia. I think the most fun I have in all of this is talking to Scott Mitchell when it's getting a little western! #oklaed
so true. I am shocked at how few people show up to vote in our district! That should be encouraging, because it means my little 1 vote will make a difference in the outcome. #oklaed
Q3: Let’s switch to the more political side of things. What are your political non-starters as an Oklahoman? i.e. what is immediately unacceptable to you? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A6) Along with volunteers, I have knocked 3000 doors in last 7 weeks. I invite anyone to compare my voting history with my opponents in #oklahd69#oklaed#oklaedvotes
Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
My district is one of them. I plan on talking with colleagues and students about using the day to make sure they vote. Possibly even celebrating with the voting stickers the following day. #oklaED
Thanks for joining us tonight! I know the office you seek has less to do with #oklaed then an #OKleg seat, bit we need supporters in all offices. If you ever have questions or want to see how a successful school is run, I am at your disposal
A3: for me, using 1 religion as the answer is a huge turn off. I believe Oklahoma is stronger because of our diversity. Also, anyone who says anything sound remotely like supporting vouchers. #oklaED
Q3: Let’s switch to the more political side of things. What are your political non-starters as an Oklahoman? i.e. what is immediately unacceptable to you? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A7 - School consolidation and cutting administrative salaries will solve ALL our problems. Oh and anything that begins with “waste, fraud, and abuse” #OklaEd
A6: as voters we need to stand together that we are what matters & continue to hold candidate debates so we can hear what they stand for. I think the “why try, it won’t matter if we vote, the elected will do as they please” gets voters beat down sometimes. #Oklaed
A7 There is plenty of money already for #oklaed it just isn't being managed well. We should audit education to make sure it is being spent properly (FYI schools are constantly audited).
A7: Just one? … That a "65% solution" would do anything but move the same $ around under a new definition of "classroom" It’s not BS or MS, it’s PhD #oklaed
A:7 The proposal to mandate that 65% of school funding to be spent on the classroom. This is a deeply ignorant thing to say that makes all kinds of incorrect assumptions. #oklaed
A6: I have made it my personal mission to ensure everyone in my sphere of influence is registered vote and aware that I am willing to talk about issues with them before they enter the #OklaEd polling place. Personally, my 18 year-old son must vote Tuesday before leaving town. :)
Q6: Low voter turnout (especially among educators) is a persistent problem in Oklahoma. How can we get more people (and teachers!) to vote? #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
A7: schools are too top-heavy and have too many non-teaching staff that are presumably wasteful. If we would just cut all these unnecessary admin positions we could pay our teachers much more. #oklaed
A7) Just one? 😂 The testing that’s mandated at the federal level. People always think and say we can fix that at the state level and we can’t!! #oklaed
A7: We need to audit every department. The money is there. We just need to find it. (However, I do not see anyone trying to find all of this supposed misappropriated money.) . #oklaed
“Government schools” “state schools” “status quo”. Schools are operated by locally elected school boards - that’s one of the purest and closest forms of representative democracy you can find today. Give me a break OCPA. #oklaed
A7) I am also tired of hearing we should vote everyone out who voted no to suspend the rules on cap gains. There is so much more to that and we have to STOP burning people at the stake for one vote! That’s not effective advocacy. #oklaed
A7 #1 that our public school system is failing! #Oklaed is better than ever, serving more Ss than ever and delivering more programs than ever to a more diversified group of young people & families than ever with less funding than ever!
A8: The first time I posted this quote was probably 11 years ago. Only #okleg has the power to move Oklahoma forward. I know you can do gr8 things for #oklaed <3
A8: Education is the foundation for everything else we must address in our state. Poverty, workforce development, criminal justice, mental health & healthcare issues, economic development...the list goes on and on. #oklaed
A8. Simply, education must be a top priority because Oklahoma kids matter just as much as kids in every other state. We should fund their education accordingly. #oklaed
I despise the talking point that one party cares more than the other about education. Take note of how many more R legislators are on the chat tonight. We need everyone to have a robust, inspiring education system—no matter what side of the aisle they are on!
A8: I’ve done my research! I’m helping candidates like @andy4ok and @DrewForOklahoma because they understand the big picture of education and what it takes to support education long term, not just band-aid fixes. I also know they are accessible and will listen #oklaED
We wouldn’t need as many non-teaching staff if we reduced mandates, especially those unfunded. I’m for iCAPs in theory, but who is going to add this to their duties? The overburdened counselor?#oklaed
A7: Not fake, just wanted to share. "maybe other factors were more important for students which, of course, just about any teacher could have told Gates before the money was spent " How about people believing in teachers again? #Oklaedhttps://t.co/fayeFcsbwI
A7: test scores should not determine grade progression. Let me make myself clear.. leave my 3rd graders alone!!! I don’t teach 3rd but I teach 4th and I don’t want to hear how stressed out they were last year. #oklaed just lay off the babies. Good grief!
That one side or the other hates #oklaed. Or that one side or the other is against all change. Tribalism keeps us apart. #oklaed has supporters on both sides of the isle.
Hi #oklaed participants! My name is Maureen; I’m a researcher at the University of Tulsa, and I need your help! I’ve been doing a study on OK public school teachers since August of 2017, and I depend on teacher interviews to understand your experiences and narratives.
A8: Public education affects literally every single one of your constituents. It is necessary for our society. It is an investment in our future. #oklaed
A8 - Education is the most important tool we can provide kids. It is LITERALLY life saving for some students. We are 1st in incarceration. We can change that by investing in kids & providing them w/an education that inspires & helps kids dream again. #OklaEd
Q4: We likely have a lot of #okleg hopefuls watching & participating tonight. So, from your personal perspective, rank the top 3 issues facing Oklahoma during the next legislative cycle. #oklaed#okleg#oklaedvotes
That one side or the other hates #oklaed. Or that one side or the other is against all change. Tribalism keeps us apart. #oklaed has supporters on both sides of the isle.
A7) the best has been the OTU group saying that the teacher pay raise can happen without the revenue package. As if they a map to find a big treasure chest the rest of us weren’t aware of! We are smarter than that folks!! #OklaEd
If you are a public school teacher and would be willing to interview with me about your experiences (totally confidential and IRB approved), please let me know. Thank you! #OklaEd
A8 It doesn't matter what tax incentives are given, industry doesn't grow if they don't have a trained workforce, which means quality education and quality educators. Stop the T shortage. This will increase revenue in the long run and grow the economy in our state #oklaed
A8: Investing in education is investing in the future of our state. We need Oklahoma to be a place where our best and brightest want to stay and thrive. Best for our economy, crime rates, and the health of our state #oklaed
A8) It’s our KIDS!!! They are our future and deserve the very best. Our kids deserve every opportunity and it starts with education. It truly is power. #oklaed
Q8. Let’s be honest. Lots of what will consume your time is sound and fury. But you can impact future generations of Oklahoma for many years by investing in our 700k! #oklaed
A8) Because 90% of Oklahoma Children attend public schools! They are counting on you to be their voice at the State Capitol!! Don’t let them down!! #oklaed
A8) one reason is these kids will be taking care of us when we are old. We should have an 8 year plan that makes certain that these kids will have all the resources they need. We did for potholes... #oklaed
A8) If you love #America then you should believe and agree that #education is the way we will stay solidified as the greatest nation on earth. Without it, we will be overcome. #okleg#oklaed
@bridgestyler Q6. My wife and I have included our children in every step of the process. They were involved at the walkout, they were with us as we discussed the positions and who we're voting for. Even went to vote with us. More involvement. #oklaed
A8) It affects everyone! Everybody goes to school, every community has a school they are attached to, we all should be invested in making them the best opportunities for our kids! #oklaed
A8: Education touches all other issues. It is at the core of what makes a community succeed or fail. Strong public schools increase the odds for individuals to lead happy and productive lives.
