Good morning, ! Sleepy after a crazy night of thunder and lightning.
First step in integrating Ss culture in class: Keeping it safe. Classroom is always a safe zone.
Happy almost Friday gang Eric in NJ
Good morning! Glad to "see" you this morning!
Yeah, right? And I teach in a town of 5000!
Good morning ROCK STARS! Great to be with you! Chris here from Ontario.

Absolutely! https://t.co/dsQX2R6hJs
First step in integrating Ss culture in class: Keeping it safe. Classroom is always a safe zone.
Should be. Always work in progress. Keep at it. https://t.co/XniVzqBBVm
First step in integrating Ss culture in class: Keeping it safe. Classroom is always a safe zone.
yes don't hide it make SS know it's OK to discuss. https://t.co/nM9F4uhgaQ

Good morning . Elisa, 5th grade teacher from Quito. Had a good night's sleep and feeling better today
Greetings from the Jersey Shore, ! Interested in today's topic. Our public school is quite homogenous: predominantly white, Christian
Thanks all well here in Soi. NJ Thanks https://t.co/HMaxkjqOn0
Good morning, ! Betsy bio teacher from nj here. Such crazy storms last night. Praying for people's well being this morning.
I try to incorporate discussion as often as possible in my class. ethnicity and culture make their way in through those.
I totally encourage my Ss to share their culture. Once one does, it catches on.
I have about 81% minorities. As the TL I'm mindful of this when ordering books. Ss want to read stories of kids like themselves.
That's amazing! Do you get any help?
Consuming lots of media from diverse voices can foster ideas/keep things current & fresh. I like
It's important to give Ss opportunities to share their stories. essays and projects are great mediums.
I missed everything! Sometimes sleep just claims victory.
One of the best ways is to simply allow Ss the choice & ability to define how they do their projects - to add their culture, etc.
So glad. Did you have the Laotian uggha uggha?
https://t.co/n2BpKiFgwg
Good morning . Elisa, 5th grade teacher from Quito. Had a good night's sleep and feeling better today
Great Q...speaks to equity and inclusion...invite/encourage Ss to share their stories...tell class community about their lives.
I encourage students to tell their story from their eyeballs, feet, senses and experiences. We all got em, share wildly. Embrace.
We are becoming more diversified as far as cultures. I know that I don't do enough, sadly. Will lurk & read today to learn.
I work at an ESOL Center. Other cultures are evident. Pretending that they aren't there wouldn't make sense.
Nope! All are 1st generation but speak English. 3 diff from India; 1 Polish; 1 Mexican; and the rest American
In the same setting, plus I'm a coach, so I'm more lurking today
Uh, oh. I don't know what the topic is today. Anyone care to retweet it? I'll look for it. https://t.co/AdAmZ7uZIZ
Greetings from the Jersey Shore, ! Interested in today's topic. Our public school is quite homogenous: predominantly white, Christian
Would be such a mistake. So fun to learn about other cultures! https://t.co/e8b8r00jXW
I work at an ESOL Center. Other cultures are evident. Pretending that they aren't there wouldn't make sense.
Its vital to address the differences, embrace them we all have differences, that contribute ,that's what makes us a society
sorry I'm late! Kanye was trending so I went through some tweets. Crazy stuff! Entertaining but sad. Susan from the shore!
Ethnicity specifically is a harder one. When its relevant I bring it up but I dont go out of my way. Perhaps I should?
Good morning After a tough week, I need an injection of your positivity & enthusiasm!
For WRAD 16 this week, during our and I shared a book w/ 18 langs and spent x talking traditions.
Morning! Getting on late because I've been prepping stew for our sweets and savory soup luncheon!
WE avoid discussions, don’t we? Does not allow Ss 2 celebrate & honor dif while realizing we’re alike https://t.co/0TM996zeZs
Good morning! Glad to "see" you this morning!
I definitely use lots of mentor texts to integrate culture & ethnicity.
I have 3 Ss from different parts of India. I have learned so much this year.
It would actually be insulting. Not every teacher is adept at doing it but we all try.
thanks again for co-moderating last night!
Diversity can extend beyond ethnicity and we have to be sure all Ss feel safe and included. Each of our Ss has a story to be told.
Good Morning Ben!! It is glad to be here and see my inspiring friends! How are you, friend?
https://t.co/0TM996zeZs
Good morning! Glad to "see" you this morning!
Same here. Was asleep before 8:00.
Integrating culture is fundamental to my job as a history T. We do POV all day long! Ss are experts in their POV, must rec others'
Learning abt cultures via literature is good, but sharing multiple perspectives w/in that culture to be vital. Avoids stereotyping.
love that. Now I'm going to have to go look. 😆
Simple, everyday things...we've had moments of Ss wanting to touch another type of hair...I teach ask first and respect the answer.
How do you integrate Ss culture and identity into your lessons?
yes, not just color, but culture, gender, LGBT etc, all must be acknowledged https://t.co/IOzJB2Y8H0
Diversity can extend beyond ethnicity and we have to be sure all Ss feel safe and included. Each of our Ss has a story to be told.
If funny how many people are talking about wild weather and all we got was about 1000 degree temperatures today.
when we take the time to truly know our Ss and share their world - we all grow more
The best part of waking up is in your cup! You know you sang that... Josh from PA. HS Math. :)
I am just totally loving this year and the respect Ss are gaining for each other. How we are all different and special
One thing I do, which is not enough, but still necessary, is that I immerse myself in cultural experiences to self-educate.
and are two great sources for investigating traditions and culture.
step one to addressing culture is to treat the kids as people.
Great idea Julie! Is there time built in for sharing those essays and projects? https://t.co/WdM0r6nOEO
It's important to give Ss opportunities to share their stories. essays and projects are great mediums.
yes, how can we teach the history of a country founded on diversity if we don't !!!! https://t.co/OfoyC0tDGI
Integrating culture is fundamental to my job as a history T. We do POV all day long! Ss are experts in their POV, must rec others'
Exactly! But I was actually more worried about the hair dryer and hot curlers
Lit and life are about connections. We are who we are because of our experiences. Share and encourage Ss to do the same.
If I have only a thin glimmer of understanding and perspective, how can I possibly respond effectively in the classroom?
In the last year we've engaged in a lot of calls in U.S. and globally. It's opened the door to cultural discussions.
Accepting students for who they are and not what they look, sound, or act like goes a long way!
Yes! Focusing on identity and how they see themselves is huge! So often lessons focus on facts not https://t.co/2KrFhjBF0o
One of the best ways is to simply allow Ss the choice & ability to define how they do their projects - to add their culture, etc.
the "act" part of that equation is the hardest one. We need to be better.
Not the TIB essays bc some are too personal, but we share our projects throughout the year.
Key is starting in a place of respect do build the vital relationship with every S. They must know you care about them, regardless.
So I read like crazy, listen to podcasts, view periscopes, follow on twitterALL ethnicities and cultures as possible. Really listen
Twitter, the internet and global project have made the world smaller. Just need to get my district to get Skype now!
G'day Jen near Sydney Aust here. Longtime no chat. Hope all are well. Love the topic.
sounds like an incredible year of respect and learning!
Hello, . I'm Ku, Learning Coach, Argentina. Jumping in late. Another great topic!
Whenever and wherever it's appropriate to what is being taught.
Also understand we are not
"accepting" them that implies they need a special place. We acknowledge them for who they are
rough at first, beyond amazing now
Welcoming/integrating diversity of cultures and ethnicity helps us create a more global community right at home!
Yea! So important for self growth and exploration!
I think many are afraid to talk culture/ethnicity ... afraid of being politically incorrect.
True, but do you think this is issue? Ts by nature appear are the empathetic sort...at least vast majority https://t.co/9JH1YpKj96
If I have only a thin glimmer of understanding and perspective, how can I possibly respond effectively in the classroom?
Cool! Hope you got photos! https://t.co/AtWzCzjYBj
wild weather for sure. I was driving home during the storms. Not fun, but I saw POTUS's motorcade!
I'll spend most of today shadowing a 7th gr volunteer S. Looking forward to lng from her and listening to her story.
The basic cornerstone of diversity is empathy. This is such an important tool that we should teach explicitly.
By the way, if you are not using this resource at your school, you should. Way powerful & effective: https://t.co/3EN0w6DryS
Good Morning, ! When we activate prior knowledge and ask Ss to make connections, this helps us incorporate culture/perspectives!
Not all Ss like having their ethnicity pointed out. My own kids don't want to be seen as different.Have had some neg experiences.1/2
Totally agree. Shaking stigmas can be extremely hard at times!
Yes but you 1st have to be someone who admits that there's injustice in the world. A surprising amount of people dont.
I think you make a great point- to feel safe& valued Ss must undrstd what makes us tick. is imp https://t.co/UIyzJTKQKX
Diversity can extend beyond ethnicity and we have to be sure all Ss feel safe and included. Each of our Ss has a story to be told.
Discussing posts and Op-Docs are also helpful catalysts when discussing identity.
Being an international school and in our host country of Argentina, we've had culturally diverse, traditions, and international day.
As a social studies teacher I get to integrate various perspectives ...work in student voice/perspective so fellow Ss can understand
Voxer, too. People in voxer chats are from all parts of country and globe.many from diverse ethnicities and subtle cultural variety
Way-cool ! How is that set up?
We must model sensitivity. If Ss want to share their culture and diversity, welcome it but they are kids first & may not want to.2/2
Without constant learning and widening of perspective,we are more easily blindsided by things we don't "get" https://t.co/FpMWKJ4PES
True, but do you think this is issue? Ts by nature appear are the empathetic sort...at least vast majority https://t.co/9JH1YpKj96
If I have only a thin glimmer of understanding and perspective, how can I possibly respond effectively in the classroom?
Yes… or even music can be eye opening & fun way to get Ss talking https://t.co/RKfSjYkUa6
Learning abt cultures via literature is good, but sharing multiple perspectives w/in that culture to be vital. Avoids stereotyping.
We should strive to incorporate diversity thoroughly in our teaching & learning, not just through marquee events
yes all about perspective and POV https://t.co/jluCZ58HJs
As a social studies teacher I get to integrate various perspectives ...work in student voice/perspective so fellow Ss can understand
Good morning! For me, it's about building relationships, making connections, and making lessons relatable and relevant!
The way to avoid that is to ask more questions.
Hey all- jumping in a a little late. I think it's also powerful to name that white, hetero, cis, protestant, male is norm in USA
I always enjoy reading your tweets about ethnicity and cultural differences. They're thought-provoking.
class morning meetings are a great place for the younger students to do that.
Ditto. https://t.co/vvtOk1gtsk
Good morning! For me, it's about building relationships, making connections, and making lessons relatable and relevant!
Okay all. Crazy busy day ahead. gotta run.
Indeed! Teaching Ss to honor cultural differences starts at home. Being globally aware begins by being locally aware.
yes, food, music, holidays, clothing all part of it. Often we find more similar then different ! https://t.co/baPr23cQUs
Yes… or even music can be eye opening & fun way to get Ss talking https://t.co/RKfSjYkUa6

currently reading a novel in 8th grade rooted in Quaker beliefs. We talk about respecting beliefs, religious beliefs. Good stuff.
, check out today's topic! I know it's one you'll want to see!
Awesome video on removing the "labels" of how the world views individuals! Really powerful. https://t.co/zy9AY949ZY Promote change
in diversity there is unity!
Let the Ss teach you abt who they are. Builds empathy! So hard to break from the pacing guide, but its important.
We have to do more than be sensitive. We need to be aware. We need to be proactive in heading off unintentional offense and exclusion
A safe and trusting space needs to be established first.
Culture and ethnicity are often talked about in relation to that l, but it's rarely made explicit. Have kids join that convo
Thanks for joining in today!! And as always providing much insight and wisdom! Happy Thursday! https://t.co/nXnwAjheDH
Okay all. Crazy busy day ahead. gotta run.
Sometimes it's the subtle things we do, like updating our classroom library to be sure Ss can select a variety of books
yes, absolutely! Such a key point
Have a great day, Friends.
Thank you everyone. is just the best way to start my day!
Happy Mini-Friday ! Make it a great day!
Of courseThis goes without saying. My point is that it's not enough. Our cultural competence must reach beyond https://t.co/P1y8BOY2As
Let the Ss teach you abt who they are. Builds empathy! So hard to break from the pacing guide, but its important.
Do you ever have Ss that are reluctant to share bc their essay is too personal?
Absolutely! Students can be the most powerful game changers, they just need the chance. https://t.co/ecXhvOwbap
Culture and ethnicity are often talked about in relation to that l, but it's rarely made explicit. Have kids join that convo
You can put out a request here via , or do to their Skype in Education site. Set up and acct and go!

how do you do that? I'm still not Twitter savy.
Super start to the day . If you want to continue THIS convo Voxer Spark chat is for you. All other talk head over to the Lounge
You can't begin to imagine how much it means to hear this, Julie. I am truly grateful to you for telling me. https://t.co/pS5wIpaSxL
I always enjoy reading your tweets about ethnicity and cultural differences. They're thought-provoking.
Definitely. Need students feel comfortable with each others differences and that they have a voice.
Hi Eric! This is near and dear to my heart! We need to teach understanding and acceptance every day! https://t.co/pOdx71h9na
Good point! We want them to know they are welcomed and valued (whole child) but we must respect their wants/needs.
I've had this experience 2. Sometimes it's important to focus on the fact that inside, we're all the same. https://t.co/jN4MSYOmez
Not all Ss like having their ethnicity pointed out. My own kids don't want to be seen as different.Have had some neg experiences.1/2

"kids don't care what you know until they know that you care"
Thanks for the brain stimulation this morning, everyone! This is the best way to start my day!
PD and Bravery. those are my only answers to this.
I agree...should be part of the natural flow of daily school life.
My kids are half-Asian but we live like ave Americans so comments can be "interesting" at times. Not just Ss! https://t.co/n3n7zsnWoh
Great pt. Sometimes Ss want to be like everyone else/fit in, not have diff pointed out. See this a lot in middle school
what students want is honesty... they also enjoy learning about each other ...
yes I just got approved to write & teach a course on Social Justice &Civil Rights for next year !! https://t.co/WbhAWX0rSh
Hi Eric! This is near and dear to my heart! We need to teach understanding and acceptance every day! https://t.co/pOdx71h9na
Have a great day! Always enjoy your posts!
We can't use differences of our students to educate others, either. https://t.co/iA11K0Q9CE
We must model sensitivity. If Ss want to share their culture and diversity, welcome it but they are kids first & may not want to.2/2
Gotta go! Have a great day everybody.
Amen to that! The most influential prof I had in college started and ended the course with this quote! https://t.co/CDAOKum5Oo
"kids don't care what you know until they know that you care"
That is just FANTASTIC Eric!! Can’t wait to learn more! I might be able to help you include pbl if you want https://t.co/FxxOEbhR7l

Even more powerful when it's identified by a white, cis, protestant, male.-It's exactly the same in Australia too!
is something I thrive on! Every S needs to have connections to characters and stories. https://t.co/WLDs1L6jOu
Sometimes it's the subtle things we do, like updating our classroom library to be sure Ss can select a variety of books
we can't connect with anyone outside of our district, so not great for exposure to diff cultures.
Let's be honest, some don't talk because they're racist. they see hispanic they think illegal, etc .. and the kids know it
Lots of great responses to this thought-provoking Q today! Thanks to everyone! Have a wonderful day full of inclusion & diversity!
Have a great day ! One last thought- the cafe is a great place to learn about culture and observe...what Ss bring for lunch!
I think our arts and music curriculums do a terrific job of sharing music across cultures. This may be a way to help a S connect.
I have some videos I use and projects we do that I can only imagine how awesome they would be at hs level! :)
Setting up classrm our Blue Zone Study allows 4 sharing of everything from food, family, fun, more
Yep. Every child has the right to have part of their home 'normal' life represented/reflected in their school life.
TU! it is natural 2 T these concepts through the arts! As a Art edr I try 2 connect in all lsns https://t.co/KD1ZESkLyL
I think our arts and music curriculums do a terrific job of sharing music across cultures. This may be a way to help a S connect.
Thanks See you again tomorrow!
And they might be missing out on a really fun, smart and cool kid. Sucks that it still lingers... https://t.co/8WpieAhLqv

I think our arts and music curriculums do a terrific job of sharing music across cultures. This may be a way to help a S connect.
Saw this the other day… so true!!
Emailing this to check out later! Thank you!
But really, that should be part of the pacing guide for *human*ities subjects!
Good Morning Jay!! I agree- “soft skills” makes them seem unimportant when they are vital! https://t.co/euGr7x0Lfg
Good morning - I don't like the words soft skills bc they may be the most important. The keys to life https://t.co/TNtLuRl4TF
Very engaging topic. Now, how do we build our faculty to be as diverse as our student population? We need more diversity in education.
LOL! Indeed. But that makes sense. And there seems very little room in education for sense. *sigh*
Here's where the rubber hits the road.
https://t.co/QnOoYqyMJM
Very engaging topic. Now, how do we build our faculty to be as diverse as our student population? We need more diversity in education.
That’s a wrap but I am leaving inspired & excited knowing so many Ts understand imp of Join tonight ET

Oh, I agree! So do my principal & super. To not do it, that's educational malpractice. Heart, THEN head.
Is it weird to say that I don't, but rather the Ss share their experiences in a safe space. https://t.co/p5hI8TpWKy
Tough to add diversity in terms of staff when one lives in a homogeneous community. Very Caucasian where I live.
Yes!
Teach students K12 &univ to

in covering the from '67, Ss will be considering how we view history - why certain events are remembered & others not
. . . it is a story they are still living. https://t.co/MSv8dNXyVD
Diversity can extend beyond ethnicity and we have to be sure all Ss feel safe and included. Each of our Ss has a story to be told.
Re diversity challenges; school could partner with a Reserve school? Use tech to bring Ts & Ss together.
