Welcome to tonight's #MOedchat We are looking forward to tonight's discussion on "Community Service". Introduce yourself by telling us who you are, your role in education, and where you're tweeting from!
A1: I think community service within our schools can mean contributing to the school to make it better through acts of service (to other Ss, classrooms, Ts, etc.). For the district I would apply that to the community surrounding your schools! #moedchat
When I think of community service I think of exactly that… Serving your community in the capacity that you can by giving of your time, talents, or treasures. #moedchat
Such a great definition! I love that you included "by doing what you can"-- I agree there are many different ways we can contribute to our community based on our own strengths! #moedchat
A1: 1) Giving back to the community that supports us, 2) Teaching children empathy and concern for others, 3) Sharing our blessings/gifts with all who need them #moedchat
A1: Community service is guiding students through the process of community building by giving back through time and dedication to make a lasting impression on the greater society. #moedchat
A2 -Community Service is about service. It shouldn’t be about getting anything in return. I think it is very important that when a class returns from the service experience there is an opportunity for them to debrief and unpack what happened #moedchat
A2: Lots of possible answers but my first thought is that we recognize there is a bigger picture or common good and that we all play a role in making our communities safe, prosperous, and good. #moedchat
A2 Focus on 'filling a need' in community. Helping to make the world a better place. Could be a collection, could be actual physical service. #moedchat

A1: Representation of our buildings as servants to the community for betterment. Showing that we are an integral part of the community to make it better. #moedchat

A2: In our building and in my mind, community service is part of service learning. We integrate teaching and learning into our community service as a means to enhance and reflect upon on the connection between curriculum and building and strengthening communities. #MOEdChat
#MOedchat A1: I believe that community service has many facets. Home-school wraparound, service projects within schools, but mostly, I think about advocating for the needs of the students and families in the community I serve at multiple levels.
A2: The innocence of children make such powerful statements with participating in CS. Their leadership speaks volumes that adults tend to forget they can do... leadership, serving others, setting the bar. #moedchat
A2: Our bldg is doing this this year! Each one of our 6 Teams of students is contributing service to an organization in Poplar Bluff. It's showing kindness and empathy. #moedchat

Agree! Students are good at coming up with ideas as to how to fill the need, as well. They need to be given the chance to take the lead in planning and problem solving with regard to community service. #moedchat
A3 The ultimate goal of a school is to help prepare students to be members of our society and we want/need members that serve and help others #moedchat
#MOedchat A2: When I think about community service, I think about the students woring with an outside organization to provide a need either within the community or outside of the community due to natural disasters or other injustices. But this can occur within a school also.
A3: Community Service builds connections between each other, empathy for one another, and emphasizes the importance of kindness/working together to improve out communities. #moedchat
A3. I just met with two students this week who want to coordinate a “gift drive” for a local charity so other children can receive gifts his holiday season. #MOedchat
A3: We are many parts of one place. We need to connect and understand each other to be understood. Even a kid on his worst day can smile inside just by helping another person. Kindness doesn't cost a dime. #moedchat
A3: We are many parts of one place. We need to connect and understand each other to be understood. Even a kid on his worst day can smile inside just by helping another person. Kindness doesn't cost a dime. We need to better others and ourselves in the simplest of ways. #moedchat
A3: We are committed to the cause bc it benefits all of us AND because if we model our commitment to service, the students will notice and hopefully develop their own call to serve. #moedchat
a3 I think community service can help motivate older students to appreciate being on the "giving" end instead of being on the "needing" end. Sometimes it helps them understand importance of academic achievement.. #Moedchat
A3: Our job as educators is not to prepare students for tests, it’s to prepare them for anything. That preparation includes having them know the realities of the community and society around them so they can be responsive to needs in authentic ways. #MOEdChat

Students are full of amazing ideas for community service/ways to spread kindness-- we just have to give them the platform to share, plan and carry out those ideas! #moedchat
#MOedchat A3: The purpose of education is to create world citizens who embody empathy, perspective-taking, problem-solving, and responsibility. By involving our students in community service projects, we are helping to build these "soft skills" within our students. #GlobalGoals
A3: We are committed to the cause so students can feel that ownership and pride through their selfless acts. When we serve others, that’s when real change happens. #LoveWell#moedchat

A4 At Thanksgiving, we have have reps from each class accompany our food donations to food pantry, help organize the canned goods on the shelves & talk to people who run pantry learning about the people who will receive the donations. Report back to classmates. #moedchat
A4. Each year our PE Department sponsors our Family Fun Run and Pancake Breakfast. The proceeds helps families in need within our school community. #moedchat
A4 I can't even list them all, the counselors at @OrchardFarmRV organize so many things, plus the teachers and students do things year round to help our community #moedchat
A4: My district has an academy model for high schools and I feel like the different high school academies are constantly pouring into our community through service projects. https://t.co/0atPSMJ1hR#ISDStrong#moedchat
A4b: Our high school beta club helps out with school events in the elementary including a big sister/brother type program and are always involved anywhere they are needed in the community. #moedchat
A4 Ss visit retirement centers and visit with residents; Ss go bowling with Special School District students; Ss do yard work for elderly in our community; #moedchat
A4: Each one of our school's six teams is providing service for a selected organization. Our Team 6 Ss are painting rock ornaments for our local assisted living facilities. Last month, it was pumpkins and ghosts. This month turkey rocks! #moedchat
A4: Also our school's Ts model community service which I think is just as important as teaching our Ss about community service #bestcolleaguesever#teachergoals#moedchat
A4: One of my faves is having students put on a “Senior” Prom at a nursing home. Lots of learning opportunities - history (of music, dance, and technology), econ (budgeting the event), plus collaboration, event planning, and of course empathy! And FUN!! 💃🏼🕺🏼 #moedchat

A4: We keep a closet full of shoes, clothes, toiletries, food. Students shop when needed. We have a school food pantry. Our students researched local agencies in need and developed a plan for helping aid dogs after research, they have to earn the money they donate. #MOEdChat

Our elementary is currently buying turkey feathers for their class turkey. All proceeds go to the local food bank and our high school beta kids work at the food bank. Full circle ❤️ #moedchat

#MOedchat A4: I am going to go outside of the box right now. Adverse Childhood Experiences is an important topic that directly affects the students in my school. As a school we are addressing ACEs by engaging in trauma training and providing PD to parents also. 1/2
I am going to have to take off a bit early tonight, playing in the snow all day is tiring when you grow up... Have a great Friday everyone! #snowday#backtoschool#moedchat

I want to know how we create systems of equity in community service. How do we ensure students with financial challenges feel part of services, particularly those asking for donations. #moedchat
Q6. What ideas do you have that are in the planning stages but are not yet being implemented? Or other ideas that have not been mentioned tonight. #MOEdChat
#MOedchat A5: I would love to hear more about different community service opportunities. I also want to hear more about what other school districts in MO have done when helping to improve their own communities. What can schools do to #UnlockPotential in their own communities?

I'm thinking there are many needs opportunities where Ss can 'perform' service and use problem-solving & critical thinking skills. I'd like to hear more about others doing this type of community service. #moedchat

At my previous school we always wanted to do a full day of service for all of our students in every grade. We bit off more than we could chew and had to scale back. Would love to try it again with my new school. #MOEdChat
#moedchat One of the middle schools in our district had an incentive day for students who has good attendance so far this year (only requirement) & the Ss spent the day in the community mulching churches, helping to rake leaves for businesses, etc. It was awesome! @ISDPanthersMsC
Thinking out loud here...sort of playing devil’s advocate. Does a day of service send the message that service is occasional or even rare? That it’s once and done? I don’t know the answer but I’m pondering the question. #moedchat@TedHiff
