#RunnersReflection - Have you ever heard people say that relationships take so much time? Relationship science actually says that responsiveness is more important than time. Responsiveness = understanding, validating, and caring. #ThePowerOfMoments#SatChat
Morning, #satchat. While it may still be summer of you, students & I are scheduled to reunite Monday :) I'm Brian. I teach middle-schoolers English in Colorado.
A1: Being in the media center it was nice to be able to work closely w/ the school counselor to get her on the morning news which would reach ALL of the classrooms & students. Terrific Kids announcements, weekly chat on virtues, etc. #satchat#SchoolCounselor
As a building principal, one of the most powerful projects I partnered on was the study of the brain with our K-5 kids & how it related emotional awareness, self-regulation & mindfulness. This was about 6 years but still so relevant. #SatChat
A1- 3 years ago we begin collaborating with middle school counselor on our #GirlsinTech#GirlsinSTEM events to expose more young women to career possibilities in #STEM and #Technology. Here's one of our t-shirts. #satchat
A1: We didn't have a school counselor for about 5 years, but last year we got one. Game Changer. He helped my students so much! Thank you Troy! #SatChat
A1: I've collaborated with H.S. counselors to plan an awesome day of motivation, inspiration, and college football at @UCLA's "I'm Going to College Day" at The Rose Bowl. I've also collab'd with counselors to help fill my CS classes and my Reconnecting Youth classes #satchat
A1 Our mentoring program has utilized counselors to help us determine students most in need of mentors. They’ve also acted as liaisons with their families.#satchat
A1: My class and I often look for ways to collaborate with our counselor. We’ve refurbished the school garden together, co-taught lessons on growth mindset and character ed. We've also developed a couple @GetKahoot games to reinforce lessons. #satchat
A1) Some projects I have collaborated with my School Counselor are Attendance Plans, College Planning/Mapping, SEL, Peer Relationships, just about everything #SatChat
A1 School counselors are able to integrate social emotional, career and life skills into academic lessons. Working with a counselor is no different than working with a different subject area teacher to creating cross curricular lessons. #satchat#schoolcounselor#asca

A1 School counselors have been instrumental in helping promote different district wide literacy initiatives. World Read Aloud day, Dr. Seuss day, summer reading...they’re invaluable partners! #satchat@AngCleveland
A1: I'm using https://t.co/dD27VQwuVq to help students find their STEM types then having them explore STEM fields as I teach to help them see the nuances of that field. It helps with PA's career readiness goals. #satchat
A1: I don’t have a guidance counselor but will be working with our social worker in collaboration with our #PhysEd teacher to deliver a social and emotional health program. I also work with mental health professionals through school based behavioral health team in school #satchat
A1: Being a counselor affords me the opportunity to be able to collaborate with EVERYONE in the building from the custodian, who checks on kids for me, to the principal. I utilize any and everyone I can to help my Ss. #satchat
As a district leader I’ve had the pleasure of learning from @marcbrackett as part of our integration of the RULER! If we can help raise emotional awareness among our students, faculty & staff (comes back to relationships) the outcomes will be positive! #SatChat
A1. As an instructional coach at @OConnellHS, I’ve had the chance to work closely with @DJOcounseling on a number of student programs designed to support our kids social emotional needs. @PLC4Character. New student orientation. Peer mentoring. Educating THE WHOLE CHILD! #Satchat
#satchat all students and every teacher could benefit from working with the counselor to help all students identify appropriate ways to solve problems and handle conflicts
Can we stop calling critical life skills "soft skills?" There is nothing "soft" about being a world-class collaborator. Nothing "soft" about being able to identify root causes to problems and generate ideas and solutions. These are critical, not soft. #Education#JaimeRant
A1 worked with elem counselors to build a variety of individual or support groups focused on SEL scaffolded needs - grief, anger management, friendship, scl anxiety, #satchat

This is great! I just met with administrators and teachers from PA and NJ at @RutgersCESP on Aug 2! I talked about School Counselors as Allies! #SatChat
In reply to
@MathDenisNJ, @RutgersCESP, @RutgersCESP
Agreed! Collaboration shouldn't be limited to just academic teachers, counselors, admin, etc...
We should be working together with everyone for the benefit of students! #satchat
Every school counselor & psychologist I’ve ever worked with has taught me so much and served as a daily reminder of why I was in the profession - to serve children & support the growth of the whole child; not just the academic growth! #SatChat
Same where I am, Bill. Team-based approaches to support students depend on including counselors (and as many relevant staff as possible) to make 360° connections. #satchat
Our Counselors & Admin are paired at our school for consistency with our students throughout their 4yrs. Helps to form meaningful relationships and stability! #SatChat
Never stop learning. We teach students to be life long learners... the same goes for administrators and teachers. Strive for excellence and always be willing to serve the entire school community.

My district has created SEL TOAs that will specifically be working with elementary and middle school students. Additionally, we have Restorative Practices TOAs in middle schools working with discipline #satchat
I’m in agreement. The secondary levels have them. At the elementary level only certain schools have them. The remaining share 4 social workers. #satchat
Love that Tony / executive control and self regulation are so critical to Ts and counselors awareness and support for ACES and/ trauma triggered kid behaviors #satchat
A2: They use @RemindHQ to setup reminders about important due dates for Ss like Financial Aid & College Application deadlines, etc.. Use Google G Suite docs to collaborate and help on personal letters/scholarship applications. #satchat
A2: Counselors can use Twitter to quickly connect with other professionals and expand their PLN. Pinterest is a great resource to develop lesson ideas for Ss. @GetKahoot and @quizlet are great for collecting data and creating a social, fun environment. #satchat
A2-Using #tech with students has to be a necessity as that is where students are "living" these days.
Helps to engage and support them. Showing them that technology is their tool for learning.
Back in my day it was the #library and a #calculator! #OldSchool#satchat
A2 School Counselors guide students toward sustainable careers & advocate 4 all Ss 2 access opportunities.➡️ @AscaTweets Webinar: Prepare Today’s Students for Tomorrow’s Careers https://t.co/SWpwaJ5Xj2#SatChat#SCCHAT
Although I don’t have a counseling background, I do have a health and physical education background. The needs of our young people on the emotional and mental health front are great. #satchat
A2 Tech is great for finding resources for Ss when needed. Tech can be a lifeline and way to connect Ss with who and what they need beyond the schoolhouse walls. #satchat@Snehalstocks@AngCleveland
Can’t imagine a school of any side, location, or demographic w/o a school counselor or two or three or more / they are the SEL guides for parents, staff, and learners #satchat

A2a: Check out the awesome ways parent engagement is increased with @PowerMyLearning. I loved hearing about this work in schools at #CLS2018 this year. #satchat
A2: Helping Students realize their digital footprint is real and that everything they post online is public and to take controlf of your social media messaging to practice good digital citizenship and allow it to open doors for you and not close opportunities for you #satchat
Can’t imagine a school of any side, location, or demographic w/o a school counselor or two or three or more / they are the SEL guides for parents, staff, and learners #satchat
A2) Our Counselors work with parents and students to utilize technology to monitor grades and attendance. They also have started a twitter account to increase communication & access to resources. #satchat
A2 Tech is great for finding resources for Ss when needed. Tech can be a lifeline and way to connect Ss with who and what they need beyond the schoolhouse walls. #satchat@Snehalstocks@AngCleveland
A2 Learning ways to use technology to empower & advocate -- rather than disempower, cut down, diminish -- is an opportunity unto itself. Navigating tech spaces effectively, responsibly w/students & families can be valuable tech stepping-stone purpose, #satchat
A2 counselors often network using tech applications including chats - also to study Connected w quality SEL focused resources / @caselorg@AspenSEAD and others #satchat
A2b: Providing students with access to their current grade status through an online system allows them to take better control of their learning an advocate for their own needs. #satchat
A2: Tech is so vital to our roles as Cs. I get great ideas from my #scchat family and follow Cs that are blog writers. I can use tools like @SmorePages to get my newsletters out to more parents. Use @RemindHQ to advocate for my role and my program. #satchat
Love it! We all need to do a better job of sharing the positive. Creating our own media by using technology is a great way thru twitter, videos, etc...#satchat
A2. Every summer we work with @DJOcounseling to develop a freshman QR code scavenger hunt to help welcome new students to our building. This year, we’re tying the theme to The Hobbit! Using tech for SEL reinforces major themes & helps students acclimate to our school. #satchat
We've collaborated to support our 10th graders yo more fully understand college admissions and it's relation to their performance and process in my class.
We've also supported each other w/ student interventions and getting families in tje fold.

A2 If you are a counselor and leader you must be present and accountable. Relationships need to be seen and cultivated across parents, student and teacher. #satchat
A3 #SatChat Check out “Top 10 Ways to Engage School Counselors as Allies in the Effort to Increase Student Access to Computer Science Education and Careers” School counselors are eager to direct students to viable education and career opportunities. https://t.co/f6DMtWdiWm
A3: This might come down 2 assistive technologies 4 students w/ special needs & not all schools/districts having a policy in place 2 accommodate their needs adequately. School Counselors can work closely w/ tech depts & school families to ensure access to meet Ss needs. #satchat
A3-One of the systemic barriers for students to access #tech is that "adults in school" are afraid to allow students to use it because of the lack of knowledge and fear.
It's better that we work w/ students and use #technology instead of banning it from use in schools. #satchat
A2 Counseling HS students with LD/ADHD who will transition to higher ed? 6 College Students/Mentors from @E2ENational Share Acommodations That Help Them Succeed including #edtechhttps://t.co/BOPIW6Waxz#satchat
Q3: What are the systemic barriers for students to access technology? How can school counselors promote access to technology and technology related skills? #satchat
I get up set when counselors are pulled away from talking and helping kids and used to do administrative work and/or Often times they are used to cover classes due to know sub. Let counselors counsel! #satchat
A3: One way to break barriers is to take time to do more things together!!! Essential for us and for our students #tech can help build bridges to collaboration #satchat#scchat#edchat
Q3 What are the systemic barriers for students to access technology?
How can school counselors promote access to technology and technology related skills? #SatChat
My father was a guidance counselor for 30 years! It's amazing how many schools don't fully utilize the role of the counselor in so many areas, including educating teachers about students and their needs. Growing those relationships can have a major impact in school! #satchat
A3: Lack of tech at home, in-school support, and off balanced curriculum hinder Ss and tech. Counselors with a class webpage that includes online resources for Ss are valuable. #satchat
I seriously could not LOVE this any more than I do! I am so inspired by this. Trying to think what I could do!! Was there a system/program you used to capture the tasks? #satchat
At its best, sure, I agree. More often, though, I notice bean-counting approaches that prioritize points over learning, creating Pavolvian responses in students/families alike when each notification arrives showing shift in index. #satchat
A2b: Providing students with access to their current grade status through an online system allows them to take better control of their learning an advocate for their own needs. #satchat
A3 (2): Could also use tech to connect with families via a blog or @RemindHQ. Participate in STEM nights and show Ss how useful tech can be for them. #satchat
Virtual reality college trips are a great idea...Especially for kids in rural locations...college trips that are long distance require lots of logistics & time away from the classroom.
#satchat

Great question Scott - counselors are part of the team to ensure equity and access limitations don’t barrier kids from learning opportunities - that includes tech @TimelessLrng#satchat
Q3: What are the systemic barriers for students to access technology? How can school counselors promote access to technology and technology related skills? #satchat
A1, A2: I’d like to challenge all #satchat participants to start using the proper term for School Counselors. We are no longer Guidance, because there is so much more that is involved with our roles. School Counselors have comprehensive programs 2 meet the needs for all! #satchat
It’s time to elevate the profession of public education. Educators must take the lead and carry the banner to restore the respect to our field that we deserve! Order the book on Amazon: https://t.co/BodQc4FTqt#call2action4ed#SatChat
A3) Many times the answer is finances as the primary barrier to access to tech. Many organizations such as @Kramden partner with schools to supply home 🖥⌨️ for students. #satchat
Yes but that is where we also have to step in and educate both parents and students—especially if students have the opportunity to resubmit work in a growth model. #satchat
And that's the end of the chat...
Thank you PLN for joining
