The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
I removed T desk from my room years ago. Now I'm in a shared space so no room is my classroom I would get rid of the file cabinets....why are they there? #bfc530
I’d permanently remove one size fits all standardized testing and the unhealthy classroom practices that accompany it and support teachers in implementing meaningful, student-centered portfolio-based performance assessments. #bfc530
My daughter just started eating lunch in her science teacher's class. No friends at lunch & she gets to play with the snake:)
#bfc530 Kids really do appreciate it. Just saying:)
Done! 6 years ago and would never look back. My "desk" is now finding a place side-by-side with the students, It's their room after all...not mine. #bfc530
I eat in the classroom almost every day. Many students like to stay in for recess and do extra things..I let them. I wolf down my lunch once they are gone. #bfc530
Kathy, It was the best first day I could ask for. I was welcomed all around by open arms. Nice to feel you belong from the start. Thanks for asking! #bfc530
What I would remove from my classroom ... not sure ... I have already dumped the desks ... the only thing (besides tech) that is "school" are the blue plastic chairs ... so those ... I would dump the chairs for some other sitting device. #bfc530
I have a small two drawer to house IEPs and cash, and gave the rest away. I have a tiny desk to hold my computer, and I let the kids use the bulky teacher desk. #bfc530

...but not assessment. Daily, personal, one-on-one assessment of where each student is on their Depth of KNowledge journey so I can provide Just In Time support & resources...or validate mastery. #bfc530
One of the things from my student teaching years, don’t sit at your desk, ever. I never do unless there are no kids in the room; 30 years later. #bfc530
Love this, Brian! I try to keep the door open as much as possible! Love when students pass by and peek in to see what shenanigans in learning we are up to. #bfc530
I've been doing this formative thing sometimes where I have a little sit down with my students and discuss where they are and what we can both work on #bfc530
Top of mind is the fact that we’ve just been asked to review new textbooks for the county. Textbooks?! I thought we were done w/those. Saddest is that some T are excited. They come with workbooks. NO! #getridoftextbooks#DitchBook#ShiftThis#bfc530
Id like to remove some of the standard engagement practices that have been around for generations. Teachers are better when they get to create. #bfc530
Indeed! There is a better way that includes #PBL and authentic, public assessments of real-world skills. Have you seen this film? https://t.co/2nBuwYRq4W#bfc530
I would remove tests and grades. There are so many other ways to demonstrate understanding. I hate seeing my Ss crying because they are not good test-takers. #bfc530
Yes! But as an ELA teacher, let those books be a fresh novel, not a selection of canned stories with a daily lesson plan. There’s something very wrong about thinking all T should be teaching the same stuff to all S at the same time #bfc530
standard driven is different than standardized. however many Ed leaders believe creating standardized lessons actually make it easier for teachers. unfortunately many teachers believe this too. Why create when someone is giving you the lesson or you're buying for a $1.99 #bfc530
I would also remove the lack of compassion and empathy that some Ts have. Some don’t realize, or worse they may not care, about the struggles many of our Ss face. #bfc530
RIGHT?!?!!! Couldn’t sleep last night after reading through the sales materials. I’ll be a team player - until it comes to doing what’s right for my kiddos #bfc530
Chris from Atlanta sick with bronchitis but back. Well for the last 3-4 years I have been pretty paperless. At my new school I am having trouble with this. I feel like I am going back in time #bfc530#docbrownsaveme
Woke up this morning realizing I missed a piece of the learning puzzle yesterday ... have to put off our debate to make sure the kids get it ... #bfc530
After reading these, I would get rid of standard school design, period. Ss need open spaces, flexible spaces & quiet spaces too, not cookie cutter classrooms. #bfc530

I haven’t but will look into it. I know you and @BenPendarvis are on the cutting edge of PBL in our state and would like to learn more about it. Making learning authentic and engaging should be systemic goals! #bfc530
With you on that Stacey! We are literally developing the leaders of tomorrow. We need to ensure that they can be critical thinkers who can act with justice, compassion, humility and service-give back to the world. #bfc530
Good morning, Chris! Hope you’re feeling better. I’m thinking there would be some Ts at my school who should do more w/o paper. Their rooms make me twitch. #bfc530
And control - keeping folk on track. I think it worries me most to see T excited about the ‘Work’ having been done for them. Tests are written, kids can write in books...those who love a quiet c’rm filled w/complicit S ❤️ them. Not me. #bfc530
Thanks, Justin. It's hard work...but so worth it to see the excitement return to students who had frankly become indifferent to education. It also takes on the equity issue better than any other approach I know of. Reach out any time! #BFC530
Was just thinking mine might be an issue but I rarely sit at it...
and it's in the back of the room out of the way. But I'll be eyeing it later...
#bfc530
Have a great day today #bfc530! Thanks for the chat. It's always good to flip your thinking around by looking at what you can take away (rather than add) to improve.

I guess that means you get to share your practice with others and evaluate it together! You know you can get tablets that will allow you to do what you need in class, especially in a Google Environment. Just some thoughts! Good luck! #bfc530
I am not saying they are bad teachers ... but are we really being creative when we borrow from others in the name of not "reinventing the wheel". Oddly, I am typing this as I prepare to use @hiphughes videos into my complement what I am doing. #bfc530
Mine is off to the side but I will sometimes sit there and Ss will come to me for Qs with practice problems. But better if I go to them I think. @DebbiSab#bfc530

Double Amen to you. I also hate evaluations on T and S level. I spend more time on spreadsheets and redundant systems than reteaching the skills in an eval year. #bfc530
That's a great start. Our secondary schools are all 1:1 learning and all schools, primary & High School are wifi throughout, even on the ovals for Physical Education. Use properly, it can have a positive impact on learning and changes your practice.
Enjoy! #bfc530
#bfc530 Physically: Can someone get that 1980's TV and broken white board out? Spiritually: eval year. Make every year a collab year instead. Stop the high-stakes fear for T's and S's.
Agreed. The more we go to assessment maps and course-wide curricula, the less we're hitting the passion of each group of kids. Share goals, individualize material. #bfc530
Remove: most traditional desks&chairs. Replace with: intentional room design to promote S collaborations. Small group seating area, tech/research area, ind reading spot, natural & incandescent lighting #bfc530
I️ would remove negativity and doubt. Would remove this from schools in general. Can’t help kids move forward when negativity thrives anywhere in school #bfc530#edchat
I don’t always wake up on time for #bfc530 (how strict is the wake-up call?) but I appreciate the highlights from @wheeler_laura! I am into getting rid of grades and desks.
Even when I don't wake up in time for the 5:30-5:45 main chat I'll still check #bfc530 & answer the question later in the morning. You should participate any day you're interested in doing so. People in other time zones do so as they wake up throughout the morning.
Ok ... took the plunge this morning & got rid of the teacher's desk.
A table left for the computer to sit on. Chairs facing each other for student conferencing.
Goal: not to sit at the desktop computer when Ss are in the room.

I’d take out things teachers didn’t choose/don’t want. So many ‘little’ things- Board placement, furniture, culture- have such a big impact on Classroom/learning. #bfc530
