Jay from NE, MS science teacher, something that put a smile on my face was coming home from P/T conferences and getting to read my kid his new ninja turtle book. #xplap
Happy Tuesday #XPLAP. Dave Kolb, 7th grade math in Genoa, IL. My dog Bella put a smile on my face today as she sniffed around and bit at the fresh snow!
HI! I'm Carol from Birmingham, AL. Teacher of 2nd graders. :) Seeing my kids "deliver" their valentines into their valentine bags made me smile. They are SO EXCITED. #xplap
Hi I am Jordan teach in Northern Alberta Canada. One thing that put a smile on my face was cuddling with my 2 yr old watching TMNT movies all day as he was sick #XPLAP
Hey #XPLAP crew my name is Tyler Pray and I had a huge smile on my face today when a relative of someone from our school made me a peanut-butter pie. #salviate#RandomActsOfKindness
Mike Washburn, wearer of many hats, from Ontario, Canada. I just had some ice cream. It’s dead cold out. We are in the middle of a blizzard. Whatever, it was awesome. #xplap
Hi Kristen from the mid-Arctic now snowing yesterday was feeezing rain Illinois High School English Teacher. What made me smile today.... my puppy #XPLAP
A1 We recently had a Chopped lesson on linear expressions. Great first attempt and many different directions we can take it. Students have given me tons of suggestions for how to improve. Aprons, standing desks, etc. Can't wait to try again. #XPLAP
A1 I try to make everything related to “The Quest” from the warmup being like the loading to the Exit Ticket being like saving for later. I try to build some kind of game/competition into every class. Gets them engaged #XPLAP
A1: I have some where the game is the lesson. Several for biogeochem cycles, couple from @legendlearning, organelle wars and body systems in supporting roles, and such #xplap
A1: One way I've been gamifying lessons recently has been using story cubes from @Gamewright Ss role the cube & come up with a creative way to tie their picture they rolled to our history lesson/topic. #XPLAP
A1: Just think of a lesson as a mini story... A vignette ... Make the students have a reason to complete the tasks... Think Breakout box... Why care to get in... because you only have an hour... Add some drama to your lessons... #XPLAP
A1- I love adding in lessons and items that add unpredictability from random events daily from @classcraftgame to rolling dice for damage or using danger cards as a review game (this is fast becoming a class favorite) #xplap
A1: @Classcraft is my jam. I love how it allows students to not just have gamified lessons but become attached to a story, and their character while they are learning. #xplap
A1: We are using Danger Cards this week to review lots of different skills. The Giant's Magic Harp started yelling Danger! Danger! They will think it is the Giant but it's a Danger Card Squad Battle. :) #xplap@mrmatera
A2: Easter eggs are a big hit with my kids. I'm even having them create them and just have the task of hiding them. Oh the Joy of "Hey that one I made!" #xplap
A2 We have a random event at the beginning of each class. Many that require student participation. If I happen to forget, they always remind me and try to predict what the event could be. #XPLAP
A1: to bring another dimension to my Japan game a wondering samurai taught what a ronin was a gave the class a challenge to solve a Japanese puzzle called a hitori #XPLAP
A2: School should be hard, but not too hard. That's really the exact same thing game designers are trying to do when they make games. We want our students to be working hard - so they feel amazing when they reach their goals. The best work is hard work IMO #xplap
Hey, I am Ryan I teach in Bowman, SC. One thing that put a smile on my face was getting parents to come up with the craziest discussions for a close reading activity I lead at a parent night. #TookEmBackToSchool#XPLAP
A2: Seriously, my students favs are the guilds, the boss battles (a themed review game), and some of the spiecal items... They just love the powerups... But mainly, the are loving the freedom a game environment gives them. #XPLAP
A1: It really depends on what we are studying. Sometimes gamified lessons fit in better than others. I'd love to hear how people use it to introduce new topics. #XPLAP
A2: My Ss love the story narrative with the “evil Omnosis” trying to take all of their fun away so they have to solve problems together to rid him of his powers #XPLAP
A2: I am getting ready to roll out my Campus PD game for my educators. I am hoping they will like the collaborative piece and the hidden surprise rewards. Creating it has been fun for me. #XPLAP
A2- my Ss really get into the cards that I created that match thier @classcraftgame characters and give them powers and battle points. In game they can also get pets and I made pet cards that also help, them in battle. I have been working on adding ally cards also #xplap
I let the characters introduce the skill or "teach" the important parts of it. It may lead to a secret mission (sidequest) to learn more, or a squad mission (guild battle), or a little review of what they learned in the introduction lesson. #xplap
A2- Right now my Ss are starting to truly play cards for the right reasons in the game, thinking strategically about when to play, who to help, etc. Very fun time. Also loving reviewing concepts with Mystery Box! #XPLAP
A2: I like the choose your own adventure mechanic. Students enjoy being able to pick what happens next. Several students have create adventures for me. #xplap
#XPLAP yes my students love guild battles too! Even my social 9 class that I haven’t totally gamified gets into the guild battles, and they too have been earning cards and loving it
A2: Dice are always fun. My kids stlll love the sleeping potion cards that get played from time to time. I can't wait for the golden harp card to be played. Kids will have to sing their answers. Hoping it's this week! #xplap
Absolutely! I used to give my students tons of time and they would procrastinate and distracted. If I make it a timed challenge instead, they jump to work. #xplap
A3- I did a one day review blow out where Ss did a review gam e where they could turn each other into zombies and the build a castle to defend against a zombie horde...it was intense! #xplap
a3) the gimkit season I tried this unit really took off the last couple of days. I'm pretty sure I had students sneaking onto their computer during other classes to play it. At one point, two classes were essentially tied for first and neither wanted to lose. #xplap
My Ss are divided into islands so I had them create their own island with legos or 3D modeling! They then had to create a descriptive journal over it! It was EPIC! #XPLAP
A3: My theme is Hero Academy. To add some PVP, some students are becoming villains. I'm using an escape room activity to reveal who the traitors are. #xplap
A3: We didn't have time this year, but in the past the Ss have prepared their ships for a hurricane at the same time as our novel. They had to accomplish 5 tasks reviewing 5 concepts (each task = 1 number on a dice). At the end they rolled dice to see if they survived. #XPLAP
Last year I had some vocab that I had to teach. I hid vocab hint cards all around the room. The kids had to find the cards and figure out how to put them together. Everyone was up and moving and doing their best to not give away the location of the clues. Smiles all around #XPLAP
A3: I had my students do the marshmellow challenge of building tall towers... But I wrapped it into my theme by saying they were building towers to defend aganst invaders and they loved it. Together the class built and encouraged each other. #XPLAP
A3: NOt sure if I am answering the question exactly but my theme is Fairy Tale Force- Fairy Tale Detectives. My kids created their own badges & have a laminated "badge" billfold where they can use an EXPO marker to keep up with their levels. #xplap
A3 Our boss battles are the main element that ties our game together. These happen once a chapter, but are not always the same. You could say that about much of my game. First full year gamifying, trying out as much as possible to see what sticks. #XPLAP
A4 everything is tied to “The Quest” and involves either completion between factions (classes) or pods (groups) so it’s just a natural part of what we do #XPLAP
A4: I have found everything I used to use "groups/tables" for last year, I use my squads (guilds) for now. Even if it's not for XP, they work in their squads to work on tasks. #xplap
A4: Happy accident but the gamers start working together to find side quests faster and figuring out my process of hiding so I have to change things up each hour to keep them on their toes #xplap
A4 I like to shake up the teams. This week I ran a cage match for a build challenge. The cage is made up of one person from each guild having to work with limited supplies. Students went nuts for this activity. #xplap
Mine did the marshmallow challenge at the beginning of school, too. We did this before I made the groups so I could see how they worked together. Who were the leaders, who sat back, who distracted everyone, etc... #xplap
A4: Teams are competing against each other for items and special perks. Alliances form to defeat the bosses. This is how we work, so it's naturally embedded. #XPLAP
A3- Using https://t.co/MGM2lXHaAP right now to create choose your own adventure stories that go with my game. Last week our super villain trapped Mr C in a labyrinth. Ss had to make the right choices to get me out. #XPLAP
A4 I use teams for boss battles as well as other reviews like Danger Cards. We will be having a snowball quiz on Thursday which requires partner, team, and whole class collaboration. #XPLAP
A3: guild battles I have been tying more into my team. Looking to use cut the wire @MrHebertPE calls the fame don’t blow it. Themed it to fit with my theme. Also did a guild battle for renaissance da Vinci operation and Ss operated on Mona Lisa #XPLAP
A3: I do a lot of @MysterySci lessons and I make those guild challenges. Today we build "landspeeders" (rubber band propelled cars) and tomorrow we will race them! #xplap
Thank you so much for joining #XPLAP this week. Next week @teachlikeaninja will be hosting and I can't wait to hear what he has cooked up for us!
Have a great rest of your week.
A4- My class has guilds and I try to include time for guilds to complete challenges together or at least work together...tomorrow my guilds are doing a news report on Bleeding Kansas with a green screen room in the library 🤞#XPLAP
I gave clues at beginning of year... haven’t done for a while to find items. Need to do again. I had Ss coming early to class just to search for clues or items #XPLAP
If the players complete a task together with someone from their team, both players get the sum of their XP together. I want them to see we truly are better together. #XPLAP
A4: When we studied Spanish exploration of CA, the kids built galleons to test buoyancy. Guilds competed to have the Galleon that holds the most cargo. This was the winning design. #XPLAP
A4: I like to do one class period group project challenges. The first time I did this I was surprised that the quality of the projects was similar to projects I had given a full week to work on. https://t.co/9cl6fzD6c3#XPLAP
Can I get the outline for the marshmallow tower assignment? Totally fits my renaissance theme and would be fun to see if groups can work well together near beginning of year. #XPLAP
You're welcome. I can also be vague and unclear in 40 characters or less. #XPLAP chat is wonderful because we get ideas from each other to help us think outside of the 📦
