HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Tonight #TXHSFBCHAT is driven by you...the coaches who submitted questions! I've scheduled 9 Qs for the night, to get as many answers as we can to each coaches' question. Things will get started pretty quick, so hope you're ready for a fast chat!
One thing we try to do, which is usually later in the year when 9th grade season is over is have 2 huddles going so we can maximize reps. One group running a play while other is getting the next play. #txhsfbchat
If you have enough two scout huddles so it’s constant work. If not I use hudl play cards to make sure the most common plays and color coordinate the receivers on pass and the OL on run. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1) We are fortunate enough to have the numbers to run two huddles is scout team so while one group is lining up and running their play the other group is getting their assignments from the card. I run one and another offensive coach runs the other. #txhsfbchat
A1: maximize the skill of the defense you are seeing. Use a combination of your varsity guys and best JV Guys. Scout team is one of the most important roles on the team, we award scout team player of the week with a captain spot #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Have scout team specific meetings before practice. Made sure everyone was on the same page and watched film on the offense were imitating. Went over each play to explain how we want it ran #txhsfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Let's check in! Let us know who you are and where you coach! Make sure you follow a new coach tonight and keep making connections! #TXHSFBCHAThttps://t.co/ysh4TNvuoN
A1) We let our OL coach, me, run the scout team. Maximizes the quality reps the kids get by calling it our play names, lets us go hurry up if the defense needs it. #txhsfbchat
A1: we go with the carded up scout team, two groups, one coach running the huddle and one coach making sure play is executed. iPads with HUDL app for play cards. #TXHSFBCHAT
Q2: How many of us use the Atavus tackling system? Why did you choose it? Advantages/Disadvantages? If you don’t use it, how do you teach Tackling in today’s football? @TeamSpiritSocks#TXHSFBCHAT
A1; On Monday & Tuesday our JV gets a time period each day with a coach. We limit plays to 4 runs & 5 passes. Got be ready to go Tuesday & Wednesday. #TXHSFBCHAT We also would have scout run same play vs different fronts before moving on to next play. Small School tricks I guess
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q2: How many of us use the Atavus tackling system? Why did you choose it? Advantages/Disadvantages? If you don’t use it, how do you teach Tackling in today’s football? TeamSpiritSocks #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: We teach the USA heads up shoulder leverage tackling. We use cigar bags/half moons/ and plum balls to teach when we don’t do it with each other. Work it everyday. #txhsfbchat
A2: I’ll bow out on this one, as I don’t know exactly what that is.........been too busy trying to beat a defense to see how they teach tackling I guess haha #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Excited about @AtavusFootball teaming up with @THSCAcoaches in tackling training going forward. I have used the Hawk tackle concept the past few years mixed in with other things picked up along the way. Shoulder leverage is an absolute!! #TXHSFBCHAT
Q2: How many of us use the Atavus tackling system? Why did you choose it? Advantages/Disadvantages? If you don’t use it, how do you teach Tackling in today’s football? @TeamSpiritSocks#TXHSFBCHAT
A2: last season at Mizzou we had a 10 minute tackling period that had for stations. My personal favorite were the tackling donuts because the players learned to emphasize getting there head across the ball carrier #txhsfbchat
Q2: How many of us use the Atavus tackling system? Why did you choose it? Advantages/Disadvantages? If you don’t use it, how do you teach Tackling in today’s football? @TeamSpiritSocks#TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Believe we’re going to integrate at least part of the Atavus system this year. Was blown away by their organization and the sheer number of different drills they have to help our players improve #txhsfbchat
A2: I"m just now getting back into it after 4 year sabbatical & the tackling crisis. I am required to do USA Heads Up by Oregon, has some weaknesses IMHO. Trying to become more familiar with Atavus & others. #TXHSFBCHAT

Q3: If your state allows contact during the summer what are your summer goals for your team and how often do you meet or workout or camps? @kdawgswift#TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Continued Then I will do like all of us do I'll take what I like from each of them and incorporate into our own system. LOL it's what #HSFBCoaches do. #TXHSFBCHAT

A3 we get 12 padded days a summer our goal is to try and install O and D and get some work in with other teams to get a jumpstart on season #txhsfbchat
A3: We are allowed up to 8 teams camps or 7 on 7s in Arkansas. We use them for team camps in shells, go to about 5-6 total in June and July. Defensively we are looking to get good at base defense vs different formations and work blitzes and other fronts as well #txhsfbchat
A3: we lift weights every day, go to 7 on 7 every week. And have 2 padded camps all designed to install our systems. Then b4 the season we know what to fix, tweat or cut. And competition 4 the players #txhsfbchat
Q3: If your state allows contact during the summer what are your summer goals for your team and how often do you meet or workout or camps? @kdawgswift#TXHSFBCHAT
A3) We have not done any padded practices or team camps over the summer. Kids take enough of a beating during season so we focus on fundamentals, weights, & conditioning. #txhsfbchat
A3: This off season one of our main goals is to bring “juice” back into the program and get the players and families bought into the the program. Also we want to create a family atmosphere and bring players from all different backgrounds together #txhsfbchat
Q3: If your state allows contact during the summer what are your summer goals for your team and how often do you meet or workout or camps? @kdawgswift#TXHSFBCHAT
A3: Think we get max 10 contact days, to be done before Jul 31, we’re using them mostly to prepare for team camp which is padded. Goal is to not get anyone hurt haha...mostly about figuring out who we are in pads and where our strengths are #txhsfbchat
NY no contact in summer, we have organized weight room 3-4 nights, 7 on 7 one day week and ideally would, love kids to do a team camp for 4-5 days.
#txhsfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q3: If your state allows contact during the summer what are your summer goals for your team and how often do you meet or workout or camps? kdawgswift #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: Oregon allows Coaches to have contact in summers in the following ways: Contact Team Camp for 5 Days after 3 to 4 days prep at home. 5 Days limited to contact 1x during day, thud other x's against other teams. Rest of Summer no pads Workouts 3 days a week 2 hours #TXHSFBCHAT
Q3: If your state allows contact during the summer what are your summer goals for your team and how often do you meet or workout or camps? @kdawgswift#TXHSFBCHAT
A2: No contact in TX. We do get after in the spring though! Need the summer to heal up before it really begins! Let’s get back to defense! Haha. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: I am a new staff member to a program this year. The head coach has made me feel very welcome. We communicate regularly and I’m not afraid to ask him questions. My main goal was to learn his vision for the program so I can help preach it #txhsfbchat
A3: We have for 24 years hosted one of the largest Team Camps on West Coast @BeachCamp16 sessions of 8 to 16 teams, with two sessions. It was great 5 days of football on rural Oregon coast. Two year sabbatical now due to school construction #TXHSFBCHAThttps://t.co/3313AtZDwy
Q3: If your state allows contact during the summer what are your summer goals for your team and how often do you meet or workout or camps? @kdawgswift#TXHSFBCHAT
A4) At old program some guys did a great job of welcoming me into the fold and tried to help me anyway possible. Invited me to dinner at their homes, gave me rides, invited me to clinics I’d never heard of. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: I try to introduce myself and get to know them as fast as possible. Try to eat lunch and pick his brain on what he has done too, something I might be able to use as well. Let them know anything they need help with I can help them out #txhsfbchat
A4: Great being STC cause every coach participates so I’m quick to speak with any new coaches and get an idea where they can help us. Also important to invite them to weights, leadership meetings, etc. so they feel more welcome #txhsfbchat
A3: Great question! I think a lot of has to do with just being available to answer questions and help them along. Just as important though is that the new guy buys in, doesn’t try to implement “his ideas” too early and feels out his role before anything else. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: As a new staff memeber I also think it’s very important to communicate with the players. Get to know them as people and establish trust before the team even hits the field #txhsfbchat
A4: give them any clothes left by the previous coaches. Get to know them and their family. Help them get used to the school and kids. Answer any and all questions they have. Try to foster a friendship! #txhsfbchat
A4: when I got my first job away from home, the staff at Boiling Springs made me feel like family from day 1. They put my young butt to work, and hit the ground running. As I get a little older, I try to do the same. I always love talking to guys and helping them out. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: Same way we make kids feel welcome - feed them and have some fun with them. In Gold Beach that means BBQ's with fresh salmon, halibut, crab and Waggu Beef after a day on the river fishing or playing. Wife and kids involved a must as well! #TXHSFBCHAT
Q5; If your state allows contact during the summer what are your summer goals for your team and how often do you meet or workout or camps? @kdawgswift#TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q4: How do you help or contribute to a new staff member feeling welcome and comfortable in their role in the program? kdawgswift #TXHSFBCHAT
A4) When I first got to NHS a few years ago the guys on staff sat down & helped me learn the offense, invited me to gatherings outside work, checked up on me as I was moving in which all made me feel welcome. Just having meaningful conversations can go a long way. #txhsfbchat
A5: In June we meet 3 times a week and team camp each week. Required 2 week dead week in late June first of July then 4 day a week workouts and team camp. Looking to get basic fundamentals down and streamline schemes. Looking to be in peak condition from workouts. #txhsfbchat
Get him involved as soon as possible.Offer help. Invite him to dinner or golf I think one of the best ways is to just get the new member around the other coaches as much as possible. That way they can all get a good feel for each other and that camaraderie takes place #txhsfbchat
A5; During 5 Day Camp - Find personnel issues, create depth, FUN! Rest of summer no pads - get bigger faster stronger, SMARTER - get mental game down as much as physical part #TXHSFBCHAT Stay Hunger over all though do not burn them out find the right balance.
A5: Never really thought about that...I took what we were doing when I took over and have tweaked it here and there over the last three years. Try to keep it simple. Hoping to be better at PAP this year! #txhsfbchat
A5: As an oline guy, I’m more of a run the ball to establish control of the game. Physically and emotionally wear them down and keep them on their toes. Once then safeties creep up, hit them deep Steamin Willie Beamen style #txhsfbchat
Real A5: Really love the play action and RPO’s I’ve seen with offenses these days and what we do. It’s a pain to defend as a defensive coach but when ran correctly it’s dirty #txhsfbchat
A5: I’m spending more time studying passing styles. My favorite passing style is a good running game that makes it easy, but I’ve gotten into the air raid and thanks for @JustinYClark for introducing me to the Run N’ Shoot #TXHSFBCHAT
A6: There is this play that Marty Schottenheimer used to run called “Power” (maybe some of you heard of it) it’s this amazing play that if ran right can break down any defense it faces #txhsfbchat
Have you checked our solution out? No better way to run tempo, easier for players to execute w/ our displays, requires you to do less work on field (eliminates the need to 2x huddle, etc).
A6: this question is so loaded for an OL guy, against even fronts, I like power, counter, ISO, and influence trap. Odd I like IZ and OZ. To be fair I like IZ, Power, and Counter against both haha. #TXHSFBCHAT
A7) At old program, had different captains each week, 2 senior O and 2 senior D. I do like the choosing of leaders and they’re the same all season. #TXHSFBCHAT
A7: this is my first year coaching so I couldn’t tell you. I have been apart of programs in the past that captains were voted on by their teammates. Captains should be loyal, tough, and does the right thing even when no one is looking #TXHSFBCHAT
A7: we used to do 4 captains, 2 from offense and 2 from defense. This past year added 2 from special teams for a total of 6. We let kids vote on captains. #txhsfbchat
A7) We have 4 each week. Players vote for one, coaches vote for one, and the other two are special teams and scout teams POTW from the week before #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q5: What is your favorite passing offensive style? Sid Gillman, Don Coryell, Run and Shoot, Air Raid, or Bill Walsh style? CoachEDK_35 #TXHSFBCHAT
A7: ideally this is an honor earned throughout the off-season in to fall camp. I always love having the kids vote on it. Gives great insight to what they see/view as important qualities in leaders. #txhsfbchat
A7: Benevolent Dictatorship, I listen to my coaches and let kids have their say but at end of the day the principal and I will pick 7 that serve for the year. Captains for games come from this group plus 1 player from previous game. #TXHSFBCHAT
John Mitchell DBs Midwest City HS Midwest City OK. Sorry 4 the late chime in. What it is what it was what it be like fellas?!?! It's been awhile. #TXHSFBCHAT
A8: I like quick slants and bubble screens personally. Ideally this is s heavy run formation if I have a running back who can make people miss #txhsfbchat
A7: We let our players vote 4 senior starters on both O & D, but the coaching staff has the final say. We don't won't a kid who starts but has D-bag tendencies to be a team captain. #TXHSFBCHAT
I like this answer, something quick, get it out of their hands because the LB’s are respecting run so much they are taking two steps forward before they know it #TXHSFBCHAT
A9: 4 day install in spring football. Start with base front/stunts/ blitzes and coverages then the next three days add a different front a day with items entailed for that mixed in. #txhsfbchat
A9) Install all runs day one. Install All formations. A few pass plays day one. A few more day 2. Then screens day 3. Entire offense should be in at the end of day 3. #TXHSFBCHAT
