The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) will host a series of Twitter chats focused on the National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries to help facilitate conversations for school librarians and educators everywhere as they unpack and implement the new AASL Standards in their local communities. Those wishing to participate can follow the hashtag #AASLstandards.
Our moderators will tweet one question at a time using a Q1 format. Your reply to that question should begin with A1. Feel free to share links and media in your answers. #AASLstandards

A1 Embarrassed that I haven’t shared #AASLstandards on my campus or with our district tech folks yet. Will be discussing with grad students/librarians-in-training
I just did PD w/ my librarians on Tues introducing the Learner standards. So far, feedback has been very positive. They are excited about the possibilities! #AASLstandards
A.1 I shared them with my new principal in the shit down for him to get a greater understanding of how I see my role as a teacher librarian at our site #AASLstandards
A1: All 145 of our MCs. We have done an overview and framework/resources review and feedback. We have not done a deep-dive or alignment to evaluation and Future Ready Librarian ... yet. #summer#nextyear#aaslstandards
A1: I purchased the round stick ons @ #aasl17 and they're on windows by lib front door. Haven't done much more than that I'm afraid. New school. My supervisor knows abt them :(
#AASLstandards
A1: I haven't shared yet (*ducks*). Thinking of sharing w/ my AP at mid-year eval conference. Sharing an #AASLstandards session w/ libs at an in-service on Monday.
A1: I shared some advocacy infographics with my Secondary Curriculum Director and fellow libs. After they saw them, we were able to purchase a few additional copies for our group! #AASLstandards
Looking forward to sharing them with my principal! Loved sharing them with fellow librarians who are where I was in Phoenix...overwhelmed at first glance. Told them to give it time. #aaslstandards
A1: In our monthly newsletter we create a TPAK lesson design and align it to a standard and we have aligned all of our face to face and virtual PD to the standards. #aaslstandards
A1a The librarians in our district really need to all get on board and get a plan to share with those above us as well as technology. Administrators (campus and district) as well. But I’m really looking forward to discussing with my grad class. #AASLstandards
Q2 Inquire! Share domain: I’m seeing SL’s designing learning experiences for learners to generate products demo’ing their learning instead of just sharing facts. #AASLStandards
so far, only in newsletters, emails, social media posts, etc. More with state group in upcoming Twitter chat, hopefully? @maslmd#maslmdchat#AASLstandards
Please share a little about who you are and where you are from, and remember to include #AASLstandards in all your tweets during this hour! #aaslstandards
A2 I'm hearing more and more about learners asking their own questions, expressing curiosity, from the Inquiry AND Explore Shared Foundations. #AASLstandards
A2 I’ve been trying to work on Curate through my library website, making it a better resource for teachers and students - and hopefully I can work more toward families. #AASLstandards
A2: principal wants learners to show their thinking, ask questions. I shared that these are competencies in INQUIRE, INCLUDE, and COLLABORATE #AASLstandards
A2: Working on inquiry with student choice & ownership. Powerful learning happens in library when students are in control. We just help steer them in right direction. #AASLstandards
A2 VB1 Learners construct new knowledge by problem solving thru cycles of design implementation & reflection. We used the Agile model from @PBL_Peyton as the Ls worked on feeder pattern action plans #AASLstandards
Q2: I would love to create/have a crosswalk between Future Ready dashboard and #aaslstandards. Our school is working on Future Ready so they're seeing as valuable
It's so impactful when learners receive feedback and then make changes, so "presenting" isn't the finale. Learning and change is the punchline. @JohnReadLibrary#AASLstandards
Working on questioning with Mrs. Mackenzie’s 7th grade health classes! Asking questions helps me:
“...read with intention.”
“...focus more on the article as I read it.”
“...remember what i read better.”
#kmslit#ownliteracy#questioning
Get to collaborate with teachers and students in google classroom , creating hyper docs and adding resources like flip grid and pepper for students to show their learning and the teachers and I to comment #AASLstandards
Our district just purchased some liscences for the full version of Flipgrid! I need to a) get that info out to teachers and b) snag one for our library as well. #AASLstandards
A1 Diane Chen, TN, and I have shared standards with admin, students, and am prepping for state level and district workshops. Great team with #tasltn#AASLstandards
A1: So far, I ordered the book for the district and the pamphlets for our librarians since the book was too expensive. And I've shared them with our librarians. #AASLStandards
A2: I’ve been working on transitioning Ts toward personalized inquiry. Just mapped out all of the state standards we hit w the 9th grade project—so fun to show off to Ts and admin #aaslstandards
A1: I need to start off by sharing them with our instructional teacher mentor on the campuses. So they know where we are coming from too. #AASLStandards
A3: I think it’s more new learning for me. Need to be reflective to better meet the needs of all learners. Create & explore are pushing me to try new things! Brave before perfect. #AASLstandards
A1: I have just requested a meeting with our district’s secondary instructional specialist. I want to our district leadership to understand a TL’s role in a thriving learning community. #aaslstandards
This Tuesday our #LMEN planning committee created a plan to dive into the standards @RCOE in order to create understanding of the standards within our county
A3. In my PD I mixed up my K-12 librarians so they interested with learners who reflect a range of perspectives - grade level, experience, background etc #AASLstandards
I love the “brave before perfect” idea. I am so unsure how to get the maker mentality started in my building to encourage Exploring & Creating, but I really just need to jump in #AASLstandards
A4: How to make their value clear to stakeholders. If we, as librarians, are ensuring all the L, SL, & SLP standards are met, how do we make other people care? #AASLstandards
A2: Help 1st graders build new knowledge of forces & motion by creating STEM learning stations. Ss work in table teams to investigate, tinker, question, & have fun learning! #AASLstandards
It was brilliant! As was taking a "bird" project and using the foundations to send it to the next level! Becoming an expert on your foundation was key. #AASLstandards
@libraryms Go to the webinar next week!! Kathryn Lewis, Mary Keeling and Kathy Mansfield are going to be discussing and sharing ideas about that very question!! #AASLstandards

Another way to enlist stakeholder interest: align a new school or district initiative with just one aspect of the standards. It becomes relevant. Librarians become instantly relevant. :) #AASLstandards
It's not that *I* don't think they are valuable. It's just that if I am doing my job, other people don't really need to think about them, yes? So how do we make others care?
#AASLstandards
A4. I am working w/ other content specialists connecting our new AASL standards to the new VA Computer Science Standards of Learning. Trying to see where there is overlap. #AASLstandards
A4 One challenge is getting admin, fellow faculty to see the value in a set of standards upon which we are not evaluated, which are not viewed as mandatory, which might “only apply to one person in the building” rather than accepting resposibility as community. #AASLstandards
Joint responsibility is such a good word...I believe the more I comment and create inside Google Classroom with Ts, I've gained in that area. #aaslstandards
@ElizabethArieza#AASLstandards "Finding any and all common denominators between the #AASLstandards" and your stakeholder's goals. Let them talk, let them tell you what matters to them. Then point to the competency that does that.
I think in our district (FCPS), we need to align #AASLstandards with Portrait of a Graduate. Beyond FCPS, we need to align #AASLstandards w/ our Virginia SOLs.
that's a great point, @libraryms. We need to find ways to get others (faculty, staff) to care as much as we do! We need to get them invested! #AASLstandards

I’m also in VA, and I was excited to hear about our upcoming Standards of Accreditation changes. They seem to align more with our #AASLstandards and open some doors for more T-L collaboration.
I see several mentions of aligning district initiatives with the standards to increase the value that OTHERS place on our work. This is discussed at length in the January 9th webinar. You can find that here: https://t.co/wLdiRJpkO0@libraryms :) #AASLstandards
@VAASL created a document that shows how libraries support the development of the profile ofVA graduate. Perhaps that is the next step to include specific language from the standards. #AASLstandards

Seems like we need to collaborate on how we present them in order for stakeholders to understand how they integrate with many content standards...#aaslstandards
A4 One challenge is getting admin, fellow faculty to see the value in a set of standards upon which we are not evaluated, which are not viewed as mandatory, which might “only apply to one person in the building” rather than accepting resposibility as community. #AASLstandards
A5 First, I need to go ahead and order a copy for our library. But I really want to introduce the standards to my AP during my evaluation, and include them in my goals. #AASLstandards
A5: Love the idea of meetups at lunch to invite students to library! Thanks @debschi! Students who maybe don’t usually stop in may feel included & join in the fun. #AASLstandards
A5 I’d also like to get the terminology in front of my teachers and admins. We use the same language. They need to know we’re on the same page, working toward common goals. #AASLstandards
The PoG I was referring to is specific to our district (FCPS): https://t.co/ZUHZT4LfUQ Virginia has something called "Profile of a Graduate" which is different. #AASLstandards
Letting them know that we're on the same page is another super-impact strategy. The Key Commitments and competencies will help with that, for sure. #AASLstandards
A6: The "Six Action Steps" infographic is a great jumping off point. Helped us frame some of our #vaslchat Qs on the #AASLstandardshttps://t.co/pI4Z5Mns4f KQ articles have been helpful too.
A6: I do like the window clings. I had made some for our district libraries' essential questions but it's a great thing that it's easy to post them. #aaslstandards
Goodbye & thanks for joining us today! Again, an archive of this chat will be available at https://t.co/m3Dq6L8p5D. We’ll see you at the next #AASLstandards Twitter chat in February!
