A1 - Reading about education...journal articles, books, blogs, etc.
Gives me a lot to think about and possibly incorporate to improve my classroom.
#tlap
A1: My professors at DSU inspire me to think outside the box and strive for better. My students also inspire me to get creative with my lessons so they aren't seeing the same things.
#tlap
Q1) #EducatedByDesign starts with mindset. Who in and out of the world of Education inspires you to stretch your creativity and thinking outside the box? #TLAP
A1 People that stretch me to think outside of the box are our students, my grandkids @burgessdave@gcouros people like Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson @jmattmiller@DavidGeurin and so many others in my PLN who share so freely of themselves #tlap
Q1) #EducatedByDesign starts with mindset. Who in and out of the world of Education inspires you to stretch your creativity and thinking outside the box? #TLAP
A1: My partner in crime @MaggieMaslowski has always been there even when I was about to call it quits. I love the fact that @Joe_Sanfelippo has inspiring words that I can watch and is always willing to message me back. Can’t forget the pirate himself @burgessdave#tlap
A1: My dad taught me to problem solve when I was younger. He was very resourceful & creative. @gcouros and his book #InnovatorsMindset inspired me apply those same ideals to education. #tlap
Q1) #EducatedByDesign starts with mindset. Who in and out of the world of Education inspires you to stretch your creativity and thinking outside the box? #TLAP

A1 I get a lot of inspiration from reading, it started with reading #tlap@burgessdave and then learning from my Ss, being connected with #my53s#4OCFPLN
A1: The person who helps me strethc my creativity would be my mother. She is always pushing me to better myself and to think more outside the box. Always strive to be better day in and day out and push yourself! #TLAP
A1 I find inspiration everywhere!! From blog posts, to books, to convos with colleagues, to noticing something in nature, or voxing and DMing with my PLN! The list is never ending. It is literally everywhere. Are your eyes open? #tlap
My students inspire me. Many have limited opportunities and will be first in family to graduate. I want them to know they can do more if they want #tlap
A1 There are so many. The original is @SirKenRobinson , @DonWettrick has been an inspiration to me over the last yr, @PeterGamwell has been an inspiration and consistent mentor to me. #TLAP

Border Stories | Francisco Guajardo | TEDxMcAllen https://t.co/U6jkwyAMQa via @YouTube. A1) In education: Dr. Francisco Guajardo, who taught me the power of shaping my own success narrative rather than being defined by a standardized test. #tlap
A1: My high school social studies teacher. He was always challenging us and giving us interesting projects to do in class. He showed me what it was really like to be a creative teacher! #tlap
Q1) #EducatedByDesign starts with mindset. Who in and out of the world of Education inspires you to stretch your creativity and thinking outside the box? #TLAP
A1: I have got to say #tlap PLN folks, on the whole. (But then that leaves out #LeadLAP, #eduar, #Leadupchat#tosachat#educoach and #PLN365. Bottom line - anyone taking time to share their insights, take risks and BRING It .
A1: when I’m planning and creating lessons I keep the Ss in mind. I just want everyone having fun experiencing history in their own creative ways. #tlap
A1: My greatest inspiration to stretch my creativity and think outside of the box has always been my students. They continuously show me new ways of thinking about math and learning and challenge me to continue growing myself. #EducatedByDesign#tlap
It’s those teachers that change the lives of others! My studio professor as @CSULB was that for me. Wish I had that level of belief in me earlier in my school career. #tlap
A1: SO MANY FOLKS! Definitely my #PLN on here. I always think of my HS counselor as someone that inspired me & believed in me. However, the main ones inspire me: MY STUDENTS & CHILDREN! What kind of educational experience do I want to provide for them? That is my WHY! #tlap

A1: The art tt at my school. And reading and rereading (and snuggling) so I guess I’ll have to say @burgessdave ! And @Rdene915 because she always calls me to chat. And anytime I chat, I am inspired soooooo.... yeah...... #tlap! 😂
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
A1 Here's my Ani. She is autistic & cognitively impaired. We brought her home from Bulgarian orphanage at 6 yrs. She weighed 23 lbs., never chewed, wasn't potty trained, no language, never had a bath/shower. Today, she's a lab tech at local hospital #tlaphttps://t.co/QirLAnwLDV
A1. I adore this quote by @DCulberhouse about moving past compliance (isn't that where many schools live?) into creativity .. beyond implementation (what??! you're spending some of the best years of your life stuck in implementation?) into innovation. #Tlap
A1: My teachers inspire me everyday. Their innovative ideas and their passion for creating meaningful learning experiences for kids is incredible. #tlap
A1. Students, always learning new things, outside of school! New research being conducted in sciences, new technology being developed, new methods, uses, etc. by extroardinary people! #tlap
A1: I read a LOT. The books I read inspire me to think deeply about the world and how to make it better as an educator. #tlaphttps://t.co/RTvUggr3wW Currently reading:

A1: So many people like @mrhooker and @ShawnMcCusker who got me hooked on connecting w/ passionate educators at edtech conferences. Made me realize the possibilities of change. #tlap
A1: that’s a good question. My fellow administrators and my teachers all have an out of the box approach. My youngest son is on the spectrum, and he certainly challenges me when trying to meet his needs. #tlap
Q1) #EducatedByDesign starts with mindset. Who in and out of the world of Education inspires you to stretch your creativity and thinking outside the box? #TLAP
A2 Modeling of our failure as a teachable/learnable moment is a start Teaching our Ss that failure is a step stone of success, something to be examined & learned from #tlap
A2: You can’t discover anything new without “failing.” You can’t explore different ways of doing things without “failing.” In every failure there is a lesson. The truly successful, the innovators, the creative geniuses, the legends all share this in common. #TLAP
A2 I really want to develop the mindset that there is never a final grade until the end of the year. Kids should always have a chance to show if they have learned. Use they "failure" as opportunities to learn and be better. Isn't that what growth mindset is all about? #tlap
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
A1 I'd have to say my PLFamily stretches me! I love when ideas here spark new ones in my mind! It's like a fireworks show!
Also my bosses-- @burgessdave & @burgess_shelley ! They are "yes" bosses & allow my creative mind to design & create for @dbc_inc. LOVE that! #tlap
A2: Reward and appreciate the work and effort that is risk-taking and different. Don't give grades but give feedback for growth. Failing is temporary, failure is when you make it permanent #tlap
A2: its a mindset. It’s an understanding that failure is okay and in fact it’s necessary in education. It’s what we do after we fall and fail that matters. That’s the sweet spot right there - seeing a student fall, rise, and conquer! #TLAP#EducatedByDesign
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
A2 the opps we have for students to explore, through #pbl and do the same as them, take some risks, fail, prob solve together, keep on going, revise, recharge and try again #tlap
As a part of our penguin unit, we went ice fishing! We Practiced reading and writing our sight words. Shout out to the #oakglengrizzlies k teachers who always share their creativity!
A2: I feel it starts with us a teacher. We have to be willing to admit failure, share what happened, and talk through steps we took to learn and grow. They have to see that process modeled! #tlap
A2: Creating a safe environment for failure is essential. If students can see the teachers make mistakes or other students make mistakes and learn from them/correct their thinking, they will be more willing to take risks.
#tlap
A2: I use #sbg instead of grading every assignment. Students can fix their mistakes, find how to improve, and focus on learning. Students are given 4 grades a semester (unit summative assessments) #tlap
Inside education = @gcouros and @katiemartinedu for taking an innovation-first look at schools. Outside education = my husband. He’s made a living as a musician, busker, poker player, open mic host, and now computer programmer, all self taught. #tlap
Q1) #EducatedByDesign starts with mindset. Who in and out of the world of Education inspires you to stretch your creativity and thinking outside the box? #TLAP
A2
I believe that students should be able to take failure and turn it into something they can be proud of. It is important to show student that failure is part of learning and not the end. #tlap
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
A2 we celebrate failure just like we do success. The practice of take the opportunity to put forth a solid effort needs to be rewarded and celebrated . Build relationship based on trust and support #tlap
A2: I started the year with a wide range of placement assessments. I told them I wanted them to skip what they didn't know so that I knew what to teach them. Daily I tell them it's good to not know. They've bought in. It's a very transparent group of Ss. #tlap
A2 I have stopped using the word failure. It will always have a negative connotation. I use the terms opportunity and choice. We make choices from data known and they lead to new opportunities. They lead to new choices. #TLAP
A2: Grades are rarely final. They are check-ins, formative opportunities for growth and reflection on my instruction. A real chance to grow and improve #tlap
A1 The whole #tlap, #xplap, and @dbc_inc universe stretches my creativity. Any interaction that makes me think outside education stretches my creativity—but most the time it’s my two year old niece lol
Q1) #EducatedByDesign starts with mindset. Who in and out of the world of Education inspires you to stretch your creativity and thinking outside the box? #TLAP
A2:Failure is an opportunity for growth, and you have to use it as such. Through lessons, teach our children that in the most of failure, they do not lose themselves. Fail Forward. #tlap
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
A2: When we did this #growthmindset challenge, we kept the recycle bin handy and celebrated EVERY single time that someone got close but couldn't quite replicate it. Permission to fail gives them wings to fly! #tlaphttps://t.co/9xCmZjBdkX
A2: We can do this by first modeling failure. Kids have to know that taking risks, failing, making changes, and then trying again is part of life.
And then create learning experiences that are challenging, authentic, and aligned to their passions. #tlap
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
A2) Failure is embraced in every industry yet in education students flee from it. Innovation requires failure but it requires reflection too. We need to give our student chance like these to grow. #tlap Chapter 2 in #EducatedByDesign is all about failure.
A2: In our #dsumath class the other day, we talked about having a positive attitude towards math. We talked about viewing the struggle of learning the concepts and procedures in a positive way. #tlap
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP

Our principal today spoke about making work a purposeful struggle. Ss need to know that it’s ok to struggle. I let my Ss know I see their struggle. Failure Needs the same acknowledgment. It’s not the end. It’s a u turn #tlap

A2: As educators, we need to not be afraid to fail. We are set on being perfect and we think that if we "fail" we should abandon everything we did (ie, tool, approach, etc.) #tlap
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
A2: This all begins by creating a positive environment where students are not afraid to fail. We have to model for them what it looks like to fail, reflect, and retry. Students do not know how to do this naturally. #tlap
A2: When Ss are learning and working hard on discovering the answer and they hit a brick wall, they can analyze what may have gone wrong and gain a deeper understanding of the process and concepts behind what they are doing. Failure allows Ss to see the different paths! #tlap
A2: Student conferencing for me has been a GAME CHANGER! Students are setting goals for themselves & it allows for us to address growth opportunities when they aren't met! They enjoy the conversations and learning paths designed for them, BY THEM! #tlap
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
A1b: Outside of education, the work my wife @JennyLMoffitt is doing to save the planet and farmland is pretty darn inspiring. As is my daughter’s determination and kindness. Love them both. #tlap
A2. Through discussion. Morning Meetings are an excellent place to post a graphic like this one and facilitate students sharing what it means to them. #tlap
A2: Highlight /focus on the process - failure is a part of the process - each time we fail we adapt, learn, improve - #designthinking#processvsproduct#tlap
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
A2 I really stress learning over the grade and, so far, kids have adapted well to that philosophy. They know nothing is “failure” but just feedback #tlap
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
In science especially using #misconception in place of "wrong" has made a difference in the classroom Ss have less fear of that word than failure #tlap
A2 demonstrate it as a leader. Fail on purpose. Then demonstrate emotional control on moving past the mistake. Failure is only final when we stop trying. #tlap
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
A2: It is important to let Ss know that mistakes are going to happen and it is how we handle them that determines how we will grow. If we never make mistakes or fail, then we are not pushing ourselves to try new things. With grades, giving meaningful feedback is critical. #tlap
A2 - a #feedbacksystem with lots and lots and lots of opportunity to give and receive early #feedback. By the time they get (or better, pick) a grade, the criteria should be old news. #TLAP
A2: We started the year with some activities from WIM by @youcubed and have been referring back to those ideas throughout the year. Making a mistake or “failing” is an opportunity for our brains and our learning to grow. And we reflect on our learning constantly. #tlap
Jen here from rural KS! I ❤️ second grade! My PLN is where it's at. I love twitter chats and connecting with others who are as passionate and innovative as I am! #tlap
A2: When we provide meaningful, acctionable feedback on the process, while they are creating. Assess when they are ready, not when there is a prescribed, arbitrary date #tlap
A2: Create a culture of learning from failure and celebrating success. One easy way to fix the grades problem would be to eliminate the pesky things! Give thoughtful, timely feedback - it's more powerful. And as @alicekeeler points out - give feedback BEFORE giving a grade! #tlap
A2: Build in opportunities to provide feedback before the final turn in. If we can make feedback part of the process instead of the result, we can help our students see how failure as stepping stones. #tlap
A2 Focus on feedback and remind your Ss that it matters what is learned and the growth that is made. Celebrate all growth and celebrate effort/ it’s all part of learning. Grade for learning! #tlap
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
A1. My 24 kiddos inspire me especially my daughter with DS! She inspires me to hear ALL voices, celebrate even the smallest successes & know that every child can do anything- it just may look a little different & may take a little longer ❤️ #tlap
Ts can turn the negative view of failure around by how we handle it in the classroom Great Point! Put a positive spin on everything, because everything can be learned from #tlap
A2: I try to impress upon my staff that students should always be given multiple pathways to demonstrate success, and the to embrace the power of yet. A grade should never be the end all be all. #tlap
A2: Lab coat moments. Model experimentation and mistakes are ok. “I am trying something new today. Let me know how you think it goes.” Have kids give you feedback like you give them. #TLAP#Significant72
A2: By giving the students the opportunities to self-assess, I think we provide a safe zone for awareness of limitations and strengths. With guidance throughout the process, students will learn a skill that will benefit them throughout their entire lives. #tlap
A2.Learn something new with your Ss. Take a risk and encourage them to do the same. The growth mindset, stay positive, if you fail, reflect, determine corrrective action to take place, retry as needed, until success obtained. Learning to problem solve is key to learning. #tlap
A2: Sorry I'm late! Trying to accomplish a lot of things in a little time. Using failure as an opportunity for growth is easy for my Ss in the STEAM Lab because the Engineering Design Process allows us room to continually test to failure, then improve. #TLAP
#TLAP - #feedback public service announcement. Reminder that we need to help Ss get plenty of feedback AND teach them how to use it (#feedbackliteracy FTW!)
True, but I'm not sure about the naturally part. Students learned a lot by failing, reflecting, and retrying (walking, communicating, playing, etc.) I think school sometimes takes these opportunities away from them and they have to be retrained to learn naturally! #tlap
A2: This all begins by creating a positive environment where students are not afraid to fail. We have to model for them what it looks like to fail, reflect, and retry. Students do not know how to do this naturally. #tlap
A2: We need to get Ss to see past the grade and look at their mistakes. I always allow Ss to make corrections on assignments and quizzes. #tlap#iTeachMath
For sure! Idk what I'd do without these families of people on Twitter. Many times my non-connected edu-friends are like, "those are NOT your friends"... then I'm all... They are TOTALLY my friends! #tlap

A2:I discuss Ss scores with them and the new goals we have together. We talk about how much growth they’ve made. We also sing a song if S or I make a mistake, we sing that song and it encourages us to keep trying #tlap S know failure is ok!
A2: We get what we model and what we celebrate. If we want to promote risk taking and a culture where it is ok to fail, we need to take risks and model what we do when things don’t work out - which is to get up, learn fr it, and keep going! #tlap
A2) Scientific discoveries are built by failures. So create learning experiences that reward happy accidents. What we don’t want is failure of the imagination. #tlap
A2: provide ss with opps where failure is expected, where they can’t mess anything up if they do fail. Made Rice Krispie treats. Only 2 rules. No metal in microwave and only pan on hot plate. Can’t go wrong there! #tlap
A2. Failure is a word/concept that Ss often fear. In today’s society, with focus on success, celebrity, fame & wealth, failure is linked with a sense of not being good enough. Actually, failure is hugely important for learning. By failing, Ss see where they need to improve. #tlap
A3: In the previously mentioned times of failure, MODEL for students how to pick their classmates up when they’ve been knocked down. Develop those empathetic traits within your students. #tlap
A2: Some schools getting a bad rap for allowing students to retake tests. But the schools are setting limits on raising the grades, & Ss must go through review process with Ts. All focus on growth. #tlap
A3 We need to teach using stories from everywhere. Let the hearts guide the learning. Use social emotional learning to tie in several disciplines so that we are always asking: what can I do to make it better for someone else. Authentic learning experiences are key. #tlap
A-to-the-Men!
Liberating, no doubt.
I'm technically creating my role! Which is so super cool! In fact, THAT is exactly what we should be training our Ss to do. Be learners...and inventors who can design their role! Bc their jobs are likely not even in existence yet. #tlap

A3: As a history teacher, my students and I regularly explore time and meet people different than us. Empathy is an essential skill to understanding the stories of the past. #tlap
A3: Design Thinking - students are identifying problems that characters in books are having (not necessarily the main problem) & then developing solutions to those problems. It is fun to see what students come up with & it really taps into the emotions of the characters. #tlap
A3. We must teach skills of seeing all perspectives and model it thru a relevant task. Restorative practices and Circle Justice help teach empathy. #tlap
A3: Good question, it's creating an environment where Ss have to see into the eyes of others. How they over come obsticals and can learn from them. #tlap
A3 Empathy learning opportunities can be found in student collaboration When they work together they can see other points of view & work on their empathy #tlap
A2 Accept tinkering as an educational practice. Tinker with objects and materials. Tinker with words and writing. Tinker with ideas and possibility. Vital part of creating. #tlap
A2: Take the Skateboarding approach and apply it to EDU. Great TEDx talk...though I can't remember the speaker.
*Failure is normal (Failure is not stigmatized)
*Nobody knows ahead of time how long it will take anybody to learn anything.
For starters. #tlap
A3: By creating a learning environment where risks are celebrated and failures are opportunities to try again we provide Ss the opportunity to help each other. #tlap
A2. When Ts model a growth mindset in their own teaching practice & encourage Ss to incorporate it into their learning; when we can encourage Ss to work hard & benefit from the motivation of their own virtuous cycle, then we have created a truly positive classroom. #tlap
Students aren’t used to this so we practice with no-stakes, instruction-less challenges. We enjoy & debrief. Writing Stations make high-stakes work possible but it takes explicit discussions & some “do you trust me?” questions to remind them it’s ok. #tlaphttps://t.co/uzgMW9vn1Q
Q2) Before we start to build creative capacity we need to address failure. How can we create moments in our classroom where failure is an opportunity for growth and not a final grade? #TLAP
So lame...right? If they learned it, who cares if it took an extra week? I've never understood that mentality. #tlap
How many times has it taken me extra tries to master something as an adult? LOTS!!
A3: Great way to help students develop empathy? Have them read about others! Try Books W/O Borders from @middleweb#tlap Resource: https://t.co/tK4QddULdZ
A3: Show Ss that YOU care and value their struggles and pick them up! Kindness is contagious and those Ss in the class will pick up on it fast. Remember that CULTURE needs to be established from day 1! #tlap
A3: When situations arise in the classroom, school, community, or world, pull those in and have the students decide how they would handle those situations. Bring empathy into the conversation.
#tlap
A2: STEM opportunities for younger students. Being honest and allowing students to see that we even fail at times, but having a growth mindset can allow us to grow and get better. Standards based grading allows us to show Ss how they are progressing- no failure involved. #TLAP
A3 develop learning experiences where students can have input in parts of the design of an activity. Give them places that they can apply their own beliefs and ideas. Gives more ownership #tlap
A3: Older kids working with younger kids. Kids helping students with severe special needs. Days of service where students go out and volunteer in the community! #tlap
A2:Model good attitudes by speaking aloud as we solve any problem, verbalizing thought process.Use words that show we are persisting, confident, & capable.Teach the children why you are speaking to yourself in such ways. Gr8 read alouds for this too (primary but many for +). #tlap
A3: I always start a school year/ new class with all the Ss learning each other's name and what they mention about themselves. Ss are more likely to empathize with those around them if they know who they are. We also talk about truly listening to others and see their view. #tlap
A3 - human-centered #designthinking activities, peer review/feedback sessions, VR exeriences, working with younger Ss. Sharing and listening to each other :) #TLAP
A3: we are always talking about characters in our stories and how they feel throughout the story. We talk/research about other cultures and/or important people in history and how they must have felt. We reflect on our behaviors, too! #tlap
A3: In the previously mentioned times of failure, MODEL for students how to pick their classmates up when they’ve been knocked down. Develop those empathetic traits within your students. #tlap
A1: my daughter. She loves to learn in different and thrives when learns in a variety of ways. Even at 4 years old, every skill or concept she has learn has been through “unconventional” means. She loves it and so do I! #TLAP
A3: Have your students put themselves in other people's shoes. Make them think about how they would feel and think. You could have them use a writing prompt to write down their ideas. #TLAP
A3: Compassion is empathy in action. Provide opportunities for students to put empathy into practice like a school wide event or drive! (which doesn't just have to occur during the holidays). #tlap
A3 I think there are lots of ways to do this but, at the same time, I don’t think we need to create them—I think we just need to look for them—they are everywhere. I had a Ss who was a little lost last week and a Ss who normally doesn’t interact with them helped them #tlap
Ss should be given opportunities to collaborate with other Ss and be able to work on projects that would help the community. Problem solving and helping others help with empathy. Putting their learning into action. A3: #tlap
A3. We can create empathy by allowing our Ss to share stories taking place in their lives. Understanding and modelling feelings for Ss. Everyone contributes in sharing. #tlap
A3: I'm a HUGE advocate of using books to inspire empathy in Ss. Picture books are a great way to create and foster empathy in ANY age & can be read quickly to begin a unit or just... wait for it... to enjoy reading a book together. (WHAAAAT? Reading for fun? YES!) #tlap
A3: We watch a documentary on our school was featured in. The emphasis was communication. I go into AI2 App Inventor lessons & eventually ask them to design and App that helps someone. #tlap
A3. In MS, we begin with an initial conversation on understanding group norms: How will we make space for everyone’s voice, not cutting anyone off & holding no judgment? We also encourage listening & perspective-taking, trying to understand why they feel the way they do. #tlap
A2. This is an exceptional book for educators and parents to read about #TheGiftofFailure I HIGHLY recommend it. As soon as I finished it I sent it off to my eldest son who now has a son of his own. #tlap
I know if I interview for admin jobs when I finish this degree in May, my 1 question for the school is - "How tied down are you to this job description?" When was the last time it was revisited? #TLAP
In reply to
@TaraMartinEDU, @burgessdave, @burgess_shelley, @dbc_inc
A3: Where there is need, there are opportunities for creativity in meeting that need. When we don't look for or try to understand the need, then we've lost an opportunity to grow, solve problems, & help others. #tlap
A3. First it’s important to label the feeling and then explain your own feelings through different events to help Ss better understand empathy. Also incorporate time to build a classroom community and share your stories. #tlap
A2: it all starts with building a trust culture in your classroom. Establish that I am your copilot in learning I want you to succeed and failure is part of the process. Don’t focus on the product as much as how you got there. It’s about the journey! #TLAP
A3: Teaching empathy takes time. It’s not something that can be introduced and simply checked off a list. It needs to be modeled and practiced and celebrated. #tlap
A3. I think it is also important to distinguish between these three words. Older students could have a class discussion comparing and contrasting them. #tlap
A3: How do we create learning opportunities for students to practice empathy?
Read stories with characters who don’t look like you and believe what you believe.
Discuss the blind spots the stories reveal in your own worldview.
Adjust accordingly.
Repeat.
#TLAP#TeacherMyth
A2, wouldn’t it be nice if we could relearn what it means to fail? Our students today believe that failure on the first attempt is the end of the opportunity, and educators reinforce this concept. Failure is the key to learning, you may find 99 ways not to make a lightbulb #tlap
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A3: Like so many things, we need to teach these skills. Provide sentence starters. Teach students the value of listening & validating--without trying to "fix" it. Teach students the value of great questions and how those questions help us learn from different perspectives. #tlap
A2: it all starts with building a trust culture in your classroom. Establish that I am your copilot in learning I want you to succeed and failure is part of the process. Don’t focus on the product as much as how you got there. It’s about the journey! #TLAP
A3: In my building we have fully embraced restorative practices & social & emotional learning. We model & give Ss tools & opportunities to practice empathy daily in circles & when they are having collaborative conversations. It has changed the culture our building. #tlap
A3 be intentional with questions of how others in various situations would problem solve, minimal resources available to solve #tlap collaboration groups where certain members can only offer certain solutions
A3) I teach a homogeneous group of students; so we must create deliberate opportunities...today our 7th grade did a "holy sites" tour of a mosque, a mandir, and buddhist temple around the city of ATL #tlap
A3: empathy is hard to “teach.” Honestly, it’s hard for me because I was brought up to be strong. But I found that teaching life skills in the classroom and connecting it to their own life creates empathy #tlap
A3. Our classroom is a community. Helping build healthy social-emotional skills in Ss will benefit one's class, as well as future classrooms. Classes cannot function well if classroom community standards aren’t discussed & encouraged. #tlap
Yes! Me too! Picture books are amazing for everything!! I love when we can have rich discussions about what happened in the book and relate without it being as scary! #tlap
A3: I think we assume that students understand how to empathize; sometimes they need to be walked through a situation. Coach them on empathy instead of expecting them to know and being frustrated when they don’t #tlap
A1: I turn to my PLN, my Ss and my own kids! ❤️ Little ones see things as I once used to, the bring me back to where imagination and creativity is at! #tlap
A3- Use the language of empathy from day 1 of the school year. From modeling to cultivating, establishing a safe space for Ss and an enriching and positive classroom climate. #tlap
A3:
Step 1: Explain empaty to them. Let them explore and connect.
Step 2: Whole group modeling.
Step 3: I believe that students appreciate the positive recognition. Make sure to give students the time to practice empathy in class and then shout it out! #tlap
A3: We watch the documentary Living on a Dollar. There's a line at the end that talks about the millions of dollars of foreign aid that can fail. He says talks about microloans and the 'power of a partial solution'. #tlap@LivingonOne
A3: Giving students a voice in the classroom. Giving them options and working to create class expectations together. Modeling empathy is a big deal, too. #tlap
This was my second year of asking students to revise anything and everything for the entire semester. It worked out. Almost none of my concerns happened. #tlap
A3: Peer evaluation and feedback can create empathy. Realizing we all struggle in some areas of our learning and can help one another. Also teach from multiple perspectives and challenge students to make claims and arguments using ideas different from their own. #TLAP
A4: I've learn to open more collaboration on Google Classroom. Having Ss working together starts to bridge that gap. As time moves forward, others work together and I see collaboration being born! #tlap
A3 - Did anyone else learn PIGS-faceS? CL proj = Positive interdependent, Indiv./grp accountability, group processes, social skills coaching, and working face-to-face. #TLAP
A4
I think that it is important to start by teaching the skills that work with collaboration. Then connect collaboration to the real world so they know why they are learning these skill. Finally, giving them several opportunities to practices these skills. #tlap
My @Skyline_WC peer tutors work with @EMU_C2W to plan + run Family Fun Nights in the community to tackle achievement + opportunity gaps in literacy by showing kids that reading + writing can be fun + to give parents additional resources to support kids. #TLAP
A3: When we share what is really important, our students will begin to understand that we are there for them and not just for a paycheck. This cause them to look at things differently #tlap
A4. This graphic by @conniehamilton shares the characteristics of collaboration. Yeah ... I know ... the print is small but you could increase it when sharing with students. #tlap
A4: That's where the art in our profession really shines. That sweet spot of getting Ss to struggle just enough that they truly tap into the strengths of each group/team member to move from just working together to creating awesomeness. #TLAP
A4 we need to help students identify their skills some of them don’t even know they have them, we Brad to assist them in advocating for themselves as well as how to take criticism and use it to advance the greater good of the group #tlap
A4: That empathy piece really fits here. When real conversation begins and Ss or adults truly communicate, we learn more intimately what and how to utilize these skills. Not to say it’s easy though! #tlap
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A3: kinda tangential but I think @classcraftgame helps build empathy within teams. Kids have to heal each other or protect each other and it builds empathy in a fun way #TLAP
A3. It’s important that students learn the necessary social skill of understanding point of view. They don’t always have to accept others’ point of view, but they should understand that not everyone sees things the way they do and that they should respect that. #tlap
A3) I am a big fan of @davegray’s empathy map! Such a great way for students to observe and learn to understand the multifaceted nature of others. #tlap
A4 have students rotate tasks in a learning experience. Gives them a chance to learn by develop more skills than what they are already comfortable with doing #tlap
A4: Give them specific roles to fill and let them take ownership of a certain job that completes the task! (not just doing different things that then combining) #tlap
A3: Empathy is a very important quality in being a good person. Engaging students in activities where they have to put themselves in someone else’s shoes is a good way to learn empathy. #tlap
A2: We thought this was so important we actually built it into our school’s core values. We call it “overcoming.” Facilitators recognize learners who demonstrate when they have grit through tough situations and learners can also recognize each other #TLAP
Q4, this is why I love Career and Tech Ed, our model is built around the theory that all your effort in hard and soft skill development focus you on preparing for college and career. This means working with a team and understanding systems. #tlap
A4. We must help kids understand “the smartest person in the room, is the room.” We must model and teach how to collaborate (roles, how to solve differences). Starts with how we design instructional practices. #tlap
A4: Allowing more student choice and foster deeper collaboration. Let them decide how to demonstrate their learning and who gets to do it and you will see students personalities and special skills shine through! #TLAP
A4 We need to revise what collaboration really is. Let us not just divide and put together. Let's work with students to show them that true collaboration is working together, working with strengths and differences to compromise and create some magic. #tlap
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A4: Use yourself as an example. I'm not very good at __, but the next door teacher is. She helps me and I help her.
Have the students make lists of their skills and weaknesses. Have them try to find others who have their weakness as a strength.
#tlap
It has to be explicit and practiced. Working on a PBL design project to gift an outdoor learning space for our elementary school. A handful of students opted out: what’s in it for me? Actually asked. #tlap
A3: Empathy is an almost everyday exercise with us being full inclusion. In a class of 10-12 students you can't hide issues, conflicts or differences. Gotta keep it positive and celebrate them. #tlap
A4: This is one of the hardest. Just an hr. ago, we talked about this at #LearnLAP. Create opportunities for interdependence, where each students' contribution is integral to the success of the whole. #TLAP
A3) Since I teach reading and writing, I’m naturally in the empathy business. Here is an example of teaching empathy with Author David Rice and his 7th grade writers from @rgccisd. #tlap
A4: Saw on Twitter that a T had Ss fill out "job applications" listing their strengths & then Ss chose groups gathering as many diff strengths as possible in the group, using those strengths to succeed. I LOVE that & wish I could remember who did it. Sounded awesome! #tlap
A4: Before Ss collaborate and understand what that means, they need to realize what they can do. What are their talents? What are their interests? How can they contribute? #TLAP
A4: Sometimes we have the Ss who prefer to work alone. This is when it really pays off to pay attention to the students and their strengths. I have given certain Ss pep talks on how creative they are w/ words/images/etc. and seen them shine. Help them see their value! #tlap
A4: Co-labor. :) With effective collaboration, we accomplish more together than we would have separately. Reflect on the individual strengths that came together in a way that brought out the best in one another. #tlap
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
Students talk about our classroom as a space to practice radical empathy where all voices are considered, power dynamics are flattened, competition is reduced + the focus is on making meaning together. Students are encouraged to have "epiphanies of the other." #TLAP
A4: Collaboration involves an understanding of the unique skills of all involved. When we take advantage of the unique talents over everyone then we can truly make magic happen #tlap
A4: To get Ss to move past just working together, they have to know each other's strengths and feed off of them. This goes back to knowing those in class with you. The Ts can help facilitate this, but the Ss need to have ownership of this as well to make it a lasting trait. #tlap
A4: Teamwork makes the dreamwork. You can model it yourself as a professional. You can also build collaborative times into class and be intentional about emphasizing the different roles that group members can have. #tlap
A4 This is an area I am working to facilitate better. Moving from just working together but leaning in on each other’s strengths to make the sum better than the parts. Was good doing it on hoops court but it’s harder in the classroom. Part of “Better” being my #oneword2019#tlap
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A4- Creating a collaborative, empathetic classroom culture, where Ss are willing to take risks, willing to be open minded and share ideas, explore, and make mistakes. #tlap
A4 I like to have student groups to create tutorials to share with others about what they create. There is a student who builds, a students who writes, a video person and a photographer. Have them rotate to prevent gender stereotyping of tasks #TLAP
A4: By providing a variety of opportunities for Ss to work together often. They get to know each other and build relationships. Collaboration will follow. #tlap
A3. By modeling, sharing experiences, asking Ss how they would feel if placed in the other person's shoes, sharing books with feelings and expressions of characters, helping Ss understand why a person feels as they do. #tlap
A4. The very best device I have seen to help students understand collaboration is @classcraftgame It is for students in grades 4+ Over time they learn how to collaborate effectively with others. #tlap
A3. Empathy can be a fundamental force in problem solving because, once employed, it enables individuals to better see and at least appreciate all sides of an issue. #tlap
Absolutely. It's nice to know who the resident experts are, but they can't be the only ones using those skills - we need to allow for more growth. Ss need to help teach others. #TLAP
A4: I think S need to get to know each other for true collaboration to happen- to Learn each other’s strengths and weaknesses. It’s up to us to give them the opportunity to do so #tlap
A4: Ss need to know who they are as workers, learners & leaders- we have to teach the communication skills - how set expectations and work through a process with an shared end goal - everyone has to be invested in the outcome #tlap#educatedbydesign
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A4: Collaboration is an integral part of my culinary classes for that reason... students value what each brings to the table. Challenging Ss to demo learning in creative ways, empowers them to celebrate their unique skills and gifts. #tlap#EducatedByDesign
A4 Students should have time to figure it out on their own, build comfort, and time building their relationships too, when Ts take time to move around and interact more, let students lead #tlap
A4: You could have students work on strengthening their skills and stretching their skills to help them deepen their thinking. Have students teach each other, if they are good at a certain skill to help the other improve. #TLAP
At least at the HS level, I've found that the Ss understand their strengths/those of their peers & friends, even better than I do, so I post the skills needed and they assemble the teams. :) #tlap
A4: It can be difficult to learn how to work collaboratively as a team. It is important for students to work collaboratively, because they can learn their strengths and weaknesses, as well as how to work as a team. #tlap
A4: I feel like figuring out how to truly value others and appreciate everyone’s strengths is not just needed for collaboration and innovation but for life. We need each other. Humanity needs everyone. Still figuring out how best to teach that. #tlap
A4. The very best device I have seen to help students understand collaboration is @classcraftgame It is for students in grades 4+ Over time they learn how to collaborate effectively with others. #tlap
A4: I think it starts with teaching them the basic skills of collaboration. Students also need to know who they are as a students and what their strengths are. #tlap
A4: Celebrating every time a student’s talents or skills provide added value to the process. Also, being intentional while teaching how to assign roles in projects #TLAP
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A3: Bring in local organizations tackling community issues like hunger, poverty, health care, etc. Students can then see what is happening with fellow community members and also help the organizations tackle these issues through projects or field trips #TLAP
A4: I try to identify Ss who are good at: space, organizing, color, coding, cooking, speaking, reasoning, problem solving, lightning computation, encouraging. I make it a big deal & try to remember to send Ss to them for it. #tlap
Everyday, for everything. Why wouldn’t we? We’re here to learn & that means from everyone. We use the instruction-less challenges to remind ourselves but we use our TQE method for reading and writing. Writing stations, too. Daily, daily practice. #tlaphttps://t.co/ewQ3BlUvkj
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A4 I think in school we have to get Ss to collaborate and reflect on the process. There need to be lots of discussion. If Ss can see beyond a grade and create a common goal then hopefully they can figure out what skills people bring to the table to achieve it together.
#TLAP

Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A4: Want students to collaborate well? Teach them how, use rubrics for what it looks like, and model it by collaborating with them and with others. #tlaphttps://t.co/xvviu5DlGf
A4) In my Entrepreneurship Studio course students start the year with a survey of their skills, interests, and areas they want to improve. They need to also get others feedback (which scares them). THEN they are ready to collaborate together. #tlap
A4. True collaboration is based on respect. Celebrate differences, teach and model respect, this provides the foundation for collaboration to thrive. #tlap
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A2) It has long been my policy that Ss can retake or redo anything in my class. I liken school to riding a bike. When we do not succeed that does not mean we give up. Rather we get back up, take what we have learned, apply it, and start to pedal again. #tlap
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A3:Be explicit in your "why" of decisions; Teach point of view; Use articles, literature from broad perspectives & teach value of having these variances; Teach HEAR (halt, engage, anticipate, replay); be metacognitive of our own feelings/thoughts/responses #tlap
A5: Having students take content and create products. Westward Expansion Twitter Chats, Roaring 20s Website Design, Graphic Design, Powtoons, and more! Our Ss should be active creators of knowledge! #tlap
#TLAP
A3. Thoughtful questioning or the practice of applying empathy to problem-solving, serves Ss well. It should be applied in/outside the classroom; asking thoughtful questions helps deepen S's thinking enabling them to understand issues more quickly & proficiently. #tlap
A4. Effective collaboration skills have to be explicitly taught. Circles are a great place to model these skills, and providing Ss with authentic feedback as they practice peer collaboration help them generalize these skills.
#TLAP
A4: We started the new year by talking about MI for our unit, so that when our UDL centers are rolling, they’ll see how everyone’s smarts can contribute to the product. Everyone is smart, everyone can contribute, we can always grow our smarts! #marbletheory#LearnLAP#tlap
A4. Everyone at the table has something to offer that is unique. By giving Ss multiple chances to collaborate and work together, Do team building projects where they have to problem solve together with everyone participating. #tlap
A5 - (1) pick the task, then the tool, (2) tools should take you up the Bloom’s triangle, (3) spend more time using than learning the tool, (4) tech should replace, it should elevate. #TLAP
A5. Technology should only be used to deepen learning that otherwise could not happen. Pedagogy and relationships will always be more important than the tech device. #tlap
I'm hoping to be there one year that it doesn't fall on my oldest daughter's birthday - June 18! It'll happen - calendar says it has to, lol! #tlap#MLmagical#USMspark

A5 We need to strive to have students create constantly, whether with tech or not. Tech helps amplify what students can create; helps eliminate barriers that might be there. Empower students by allowing them & pushing them to go further & make a difference. #tlap
A5: Tech is an awesome tool and not the end all be all. We must challenge our students to think creatively about complex real world problems. Our Ss have so much to offer and we can open doors that they may not have access to otherwise. #TLAP
A4: Provide lots of opportunity to practice empathy and learn from others. I try to create activities where every student contributes and shares their thinking. Modeling this with students also helps. #tlap
A4 every piece of the puzzle makes a complete picture, everyone can bring something, we all have a role. Imagine 5 MJs on the court together. Not enough basketballs. Stress the value, no matter how small or large, that everyone brings. #tlap
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A5: I love that you used the word #empower here. It’s different than engaged. When Ss are empowered they are designing their own learning, taking the lead, & then taking ACTION! Technology allows for personalized learning experiences & ways of tapping into something bigger #TLAP
Agreed! We need to be intentional on how and why we are working together. Providing students with opportunity to work authentically in relevant situations! #tlap
A5: A recent example for my Ss would be when I had them use @cospaces_edu to create #ARVRinedu children's stories, target grades K-2, gave the link to first story finished to my awesome #PLN, & my Ss watched our stories excite kinders in multiple states. That's powerful. #tlap
A4: by first knowing ss strengths and highlighting them. One ss in one of my classes distracts everyone, making it hard to teach. The minute I pointed out his power, he used it to help. We need to help identify strength and call on ss to use them to solve real probs! #TLAP
A5 #tlap This is a great question! I was genuinely worried about going 1:1. Instead I made it support our learning & purpose. Our Collab Screens are catalysts! Here’s how (and it’s much less than you think!): https://t.co/0TDExCKW3B and https://t.co/MF74EcOMFD
Exactly. Even if you just talk about a project that you and some colleagues tackled together, it can show them that group work is what "grown-ups" do too! #tlap
A4: I teach 6th graders, and they usually aren't self aware enough yet to know all of their amazing strengths. They need a lot of time to play, fail, and explore to figure out what they are good at and what is worth developing further. #tlap
A5 Technology has to have a purpose If it is used just to be used it is not being used to its potential When a purpose is attached the use of technology is more meaningful #tlap
A5 tech isn’t really for consuming and creating. Tech is for sharing knowledge learned. Tech is creating models of content that can be shared with others #TLAP
A5: For me Scratch w/lego WeDo and now Cospaces w/Merge Cube are gateways into this. I used to rely on video a lot. I try to use these as assessment tools to wrap up lessons if possible. I think it leads to more independent use. Sadly I don't use video as much. #tlap
A4: i love coding for collaboration. Different kids are successful...kids that struggle in core classes may excel at coding. So different kids are the leaders, changes everyone’s perspectives #tlap
Ss are really good at searching out info. They are digital natives. They understand what it means to be an influencer and content creator. We need to speak assignments in their terms! #TLAP
A5: There are so many opportunities for students to use technology. At school, students should be able to experience how fun and practical technology can be for learning. #tlap
A4: I’m still working on this to make sure all students see the value in collaboration while not seeing it as an assignment but rather a learning experience #tlap
A5: I give S tech choices to respond to a book they’ve read. The outcomes are amazing and they love reading even more! I use tech to engage S not just something else to do. Formative assessments are much more fun with tech, too! I could go on and on! #tlap
A5: Green screen @DoInkTweets, stop animation, robotics, @Flipgrid, @Seesaw allow students to create and apply learning from content to the technology. We are expanding our use of these tools to give students platforms to demonstrate their learning. #tlap
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A5: I will be presenting a session titled "It's the Wizard not the Wand" at #ucet19 this year! Our focus must be on learning first, technology second. Design with learning in mind & then determine how best to leverage #edtech to get the impact you are chasing. #ChaseImpact#tlap
A5: I use tech for creativity, reflection, collaboration. I learned a long time ago that tech is just part of a toolbox and how you can use it to enhance creativity not replace anything. A work sheet even digital is still a worksheet. #tlap
And really, isn’t this the point? Did you learn it? .. We reflected today on their stress levels trying to get it in before the semester but that’s fine. We’re all learning. #tlap

A5: Use tech to help students share their writing with others has really inspired them! Also using tech to connect kids with other authors has been a BOON at my school! We @SkypeClassroom with authors often Read how here: https://t.co/6Jv7wbdLoV#tlap
A5: Sometimes you have to step back and ask yourself "WHY" am I using this resource? Will students benefit?
Some of my FAVORITE creation tools: @Screencastify, @wakelet (share creations), #googleslides, @adobespark, @canva - just to name a few! #tlap
A5: Having them create websites and blog posts or providing several different tech tools students can use for their own projects. Animation, artistic, music, and movie apps allow students to create their own product.
#tlap
Technology in its pure form is a tool to either create or consume. A pencil is technology and so is paper. The question is what is the purpose as technology advances? #tlap
A5: @hollishudson1 & I work together to have Ss create splash pads, roller coasters, etc in #MinecraftEDU, then they get to experience them in @ViveCraft in Virtual Reality. It's always a highlight of my year! #tlap#mtbos
Q5: It goes back to giving students a voice and choice. I think we have to give them a tool box or resources to have at their disposal then let them to the rest. No more..” here is an iMovie project” instead. Show me what you learned using ...whatever you want! #TLAP
A5: I use technology in various ways to create that underlying learning. Students (Rhetoric class) focus on blog posts weekly. We use @Google classroom to manage assignments and communication #tlap
A5: I have my Ss put their learning into action. I give my Ss a list of possible artifacts they can create that would showcase what they learned. Some examples include a podcast, a movie, making a poetry book, or making a piece of art. #TLAP
I tell students to be a responsible maker that they have to share what they create and learn. Whether it is positive results or negative, the information will help someone else. #tlap
A5: My e-learning assignment was for Ss to curate data from an article on the Voting Rights Act of '65. Tomorrow we're creating Infographics, but THEY decide how to create visual from the data. Choice of tools. #TLAP
@AnnickRauch and I put our students in charge for our #mindsetmondayLRSD Growth Mindset Read Aloud! Using technology in authentic ways makes for meaningful learning. It’s making those connections, in our 🧠, ♥️ and with other people. #tlap
A5: This quarter I'm taking a leap and having the students create their own website/portfolios using Weebly. I want them to develop a platform they can use as a hub for the content they create. #tlap
A5: @codeorg is great for creativity...right now my kids are making websites in the HTML unit for #CSD, totally from scratch about whatever they want #TLAP
Technology in its pure form is a tool to either create or consume. A pencil is technology and so is paper. The question is what is the purpose as technology advances? #tlap
A4) it would be helpful to do a strengths survey at the start of a semester and then focus on things people so well. @ProfLeaWaters book is amazing inspiration for this topic. #tlap
A5: by making learning or learning activities nonlinear and individual. Love when ss try to google the answer. I get great pleasure out of allowing them to google answers that they have to solve on their own! 😂😤 #TLAP
Q6) Ideation means sharing your “wildest ideas”. How can we challenge students to come up with 50 idea and not jut 5 when looking to solve a problem? #TLAP
A4: Cr8 learning activities that are complex- sts need a reason to collaborate- require positive interdependence. Est. expectations and norms for being in groups; Not just product but discussions/ building consensus helps recogn. each otherʻs skills/abilities #tlap
It’s easy to use tech to check off a box for an evaluation. You constantly have to ask is this the right tool for the job or is it a toy that’s going to detract from learning goals #TLAP
What grades do you teach, Kristen? I’m teach HS and when I hear concerns about how “grades matter now” I think, “Isn’t that even more important that they’re accurate then?” #tlap

Thanks, and yes! They are producing amazing work! Sophomre English became cool but there was a learning curve and struggle. Here's the @wakelet where I'll store them as they are finished. The first one is there. Tag me if you share with Ss! #tlaphttps://t.co/y5RsFW8nRe

A5) I push students to find any way they can create content - music, video, photography, animation, programing, whatever they can do to create a vehicle to share something important! #tlap
A5 Using Tech or not we need to encourage & provide opportunities for our Ss to be creators, problem solvers, innovators, entrepreneurs. Tech ex, former Ss @djess_hpa wants to end the Stigma around womens periods and she shared it with the world. https://t.co/Hh8gvS7319#TLAP
A5) Sample: Students interviewed parent/grandparent "What is your fondest or most lasting memory of the space program?" Ben's grandpa attended John Glenn's victory parade! https://t.co/O93eJNm4q6#tlap
@AnnickRauch and I put our students in charge for our #mindsetmondayLRSD Growth Mindset Read Aloud! Using technology in authentic ways makes for meaningful learning. It’s making those connections, in our 🧠, ♥️ and with other people. #tlap
Imagine if we handed a kid a hammer and said, “Have fun with this,” vs. asking them to build something that’s useful to others and offering them a hammer alongside a sewing machine. #TLAP
Q6) Ideation means sharing your “wildest ideas”. How can we challenge students to come up with 50 idea and not jut 5 when looking to solve a problem? #TLAP
A5. Technology is learning to utilize someone's program's written to do a specific task or activity in order to gain information or run the program which can be saved and shared with others. #tlap
A5 technology is just the tool that is used now. Its about Ss utilizing whatever tool they have to gain and then share knowledge with others. Ss are lucky because they have so much now. @Flipgrid is a favorite of our students to share #tlap
A6 this is where having openings in the creation of activities comes into play. Having places to add their own beliefs creates variations in the design process #TLAP
A6: "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -- Whether or not Edison actually said these words or not, it is a powerful statement to keep trying! #tlap
A6 Keep challenging students to always think of more ideas. We tend to promote the "get the right answer ASAP". With ideation, we want them to release those barriers and think of as many ideas as possible. If we limit ourselves, we are only hurting ourselves. #tlap#practice
Q6) Ideation means sharing your “wildest ideas”. How can we challenge students to come up with 50 idea and not jut 5 when looking to solve a problem? #TLAP
A5: Thank goodness for @googledrive and all the many things our students can create! I’m amazed every day by what our teachers and students come up with! #tlap
A5: My building has moved away from anything tech-based that feels canned. Instead we have invested in green screens, audio/video equipment, technology such as Cospaces, among other things to provide Ss with opportunities to innovate and share their ideas. #tlap
A6: To encourage ideation & not stagnation, our culture should be one that doesn't laugh at or ignore ANY idea, no matter how silly or improbable. I get some GREAT ideas from craziness. #tlap
A6 Just keep asking them to build onto the ideas, make a slight change, generate a new thought, ask some what if/hypotheticals that lead them to think differently #tlap
A5: Ts and Ss have such a wealth of tools available at their disposal to showcase what they are learning. When both are empowered to try new ways, the creation follows. I work to build that library of resources to provide the opportunities for creation to soar. #tlap
A6: "Bad idea factories", or first idea toss out. No judgement or prompting simply keep adding until I tell you to stop (which may be three days from now ;) #tlap
Q6: When we build a community where every idea is on the table (no matter how big or small), and that students gain value from one another ideas flow... like a fire hydrant. #TLAP
Q6) Ideation means sharing your “wildest ideas”. How can we challenge students to come up with 50 idea and not jut 5 when looking to solve a problem? #TLAP
A5: going beyond the regurgitation into the deeper meaning and trusting students to choose how to show their learning by showing you their best self - let them guide the way instead of the teacher clearing the path for them #TLAP
Also Model it- believe in your colleagues- open your classroom door- talk to someone on staff you don't know well/ learn their practice- be humble, and focus outward. Establish a culture of collaboration and mentor-coaching. #tlap
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A5a. Technology can empower teacher-skills in collaboration, personalized feedback, and immersive learning experiences developing student cognitive & academic skills because students believe they learn more having greater voice and choice. #tlap
A6 Ha!! I ask students to brainstorm 20 thematic ideas from our novel and then snake around the room, typing one at a time... It’s when I snake back around that their responses get interesting! And as with all, it has to be explicitly discussed. #tlap
Q6) Ideation means sharing your “wildest ideas”. How can we challenge students to come up with 50 idea and not jut 5 when looking to solve a problem? #TLAP
A6: This is one of my rallying cries with students and educators, "Be PROLIFIC, not perfect." #tlap#EducatedByDesign "The best way to get a good idea is to get a lot of ideas." - Linus Pauling
A5 my ultimate goal here would be for Ls in P, Ok to collaborate through technology with Ls across the world to create a genius hour project to solve a problem. #tlap#thinkyuge
I love that you pointed this out. One of our pieces is to help them discover their strengths and then help them use them to make an impact on learning. #tlap
A6: We can challenge Ss to come up with tons of ideas when they are excited about what they are doing, by working in teams, and when there is a real life challenge they are trying to help solve! #tlap
I tried it for the first time last semester and at first it was an epic failure. Didn't realize how little they understood. We went back to the drawing board and grew together. #TLAP
A6: Called a #makerspace for a reason, doesn't just do one class or three, it's a daily creation, learning new lessons, making mistakes and building new ideas every day. #TLAP
You're welcome! Our thinking was that kinders could have it read to them, but I wanted my Ss to create a fun 360 scene by scene story that older Ss could explore & read on their own. :) #tlap

A6 I limit the directions that I give. I reduced it down to 3 sentences. From their creativity will take over. All ideas and materials are available to them. Give them freedom and ideas will prosper. Less is truly more. #TLAP
A6: Have a legit brainstorming session with no restraints that's not just 1 minute... build time into your lesson for that!
When my Ss brainstorm, we have a competition to see who came up with the most ideas by sharing 1 idea per group until only 1 group is left. #tlap
A6 Awesome question. Encouraging all learners to dream big, take risks and believe in the power of "what if". I remember encouraging a teacher to record his own music to show his students he was invested in their music process. Model it! #tlap
Q6) Ideation means sharing your “wildest ideas”. How can we challenge students to come up with 50 idea and not jut 5 when looking to solve a problem? #TLAP
A6: Create safe climate and promote a sense of FUN! It makes a big difference in how much students are willing to put themselves out there. #tlap Read about cultivating a fun & productive classroom in @middleweb RESOURCE: https://t.co/qwby3UWr09
Q6) Ideation means sharing your “wildest ideas”. How can we challenge students to come up with 50 idea and not jut 5 when looking to solve a problem? #TLAP
A1: my PLN I’m School & im the twitter world! There are so many GREAT ideas that I see and go ohhhh I never thought to try it that way or it sparks a new idea in your head! #tlap
Q1) #EducatedByDesign starts with mindset. Who in and out of the world of Education inspires you to stretch your creativity and thinking outside the box? #TLAP
A6 I feel challenged by this question—50 ways🤔 Look at it from different perspectives, taking away an element that might be an obstacle, perhaps taking those first five and “ok how can we expand on that?” #tlap
Q6) Ideation means sharing your “wildest ideas”. How can we challenge students to come up with 50 idea and not jut 5 when looking to solve a problem? #TLAP
A5: Sharing a variety of tools that students can use to show their learning. Everything from paper and pencil to Google Slides and @Desmos. I encourage my students to share other tools that they find as well. #tlap
A6: If you have a safe, learning environment where students ideas and thoughts are consumed, this can create many different ideas. This allows for all students to have a voice in discussions. #TLAP
I think that by giving Ss as many different platforms as possible to share their ideas helps. Student notebooks, inspiration boards, Anonymous platforms through the use of technology, think tanks and fishbowls #TLAP
Q6) My favorite wild idea generator is the Paperclip challenge. 3rd graders come up with 50 ideas and adults in my workshop struggle to come up with 10! #tlap
A6: I think it all starts with finding what your students are passionate about. I think they could easily come up with 50 ideas when they are talking about what they are passionate about! #tlap
A6: Give students time to brainstorm. Focusing on there isn't one right way, there can be many ways to solve the same problem. Encourage students to research and use resources to find more ways than what they originally thought. Feedback is an important tool as well. #tlap
A6) My favorite wild idea generator is the Paperclip challenge. 3rd graders come up with 50 ideas and adults in my workshop struggle to come up with 10! #tlap
A6 This starts early on in the year by modeling challenges for students with multiple solutions. This can be can be done in large groups and break it down as they progress. We need to help them learn how to ask leading questions. Create a bank of questions to draw from #tlap
A6. To encourage idealation, we start by recording every idea down on a paper forming a tree matrix. Whether they are good or bad, doesn't matter. The importance is the flow of generating thoughts around a specific topic. #tlap
A6: This is one of my rallying cries with students and educators, "Be PROLIFIC, not perfect." #tlap#EducatedByDesign "The best way to get a good idea is to get a lot of ideas." - Linus Pauling
A6: Lead them in an activity where you can demonstrate that’s it ok to take risk in a safe environment. It’s easier for them to put themselves out there if you have shown the way. #tlap
A6: Teach divergent thinking prior to convergent thinking. Get everything out on the table--exhaust our brains! Then, and only then do we use a protocol of sorts to narrow our options to the few that are actionable. #tlap
A6: This is one of my rallying cries with students and educators, "Be PROLIFIC, not perfect." #tlap#EducatedByDesign "The best way to get a good idea is to get a lot of ideas." - Linus Pauling
A5 Love using tech to create!
I do think many times we miss a key piece--the WHY?! If we only create to learn FROM or learn WITH, we miss out on the "empathy" piece--learn FOR! What "real" problem are we solving? #tlap@YongZhaoEd taught me, "Learn FROM, Learn WITH & Learn FOR!"
A6 Design thinking - my fav part of it is the crazy 8 idea brainstorming,
When you take all stakes away Ss come up with WILD ideas. It is not until they let go and have fun with it that they can come up with a ton of crazy ideas that could lead to something AMAZING. #TLAP
A6: Just created a card game that generates ideas through game play!!! Can’t wait to continue to find creative ways to use the game for PD and the classroom!! #tlap#Mlmagical
A6) Students need to have a safe space for idea generation. That doesn’t mean their ideas are safe. It means that the risk of ideation is respected by all those involved. #tlap
Exactly what I was getting at with my post. After using QFT I will never go back. The thinking is deeper and every student participates because every student can ask questions. #TLAP
Q1) #EducatedByDesign starts with mindset. Who in and out of the world of Education inspires you to stretch your creativity and thinking outside the box? #TLAP
A5) @codeorg and @hadip has super charged a mission for SD to be empowered as creators. @scratch is another example that shows students they have what it takes to be bold and make something of their own. #TLAP
A6: I believe that Ss are more likely to take more risks and share more ideas if you reinforce them for sharing and foster a culture in which there are no wrong answers when they are in the ideation or imagine phase of the design cycle. #tlap
A6: teach them to dig deep & ask tons of questions- we use visual journaling with students to help them think through the process & illustrate ideas ... the more ideas the stronger the final outcome #TLAP#educatedbydesign
Q6) Ideation means sharing your “wildest ideas”. How can we challenge students to come up with 50 idea and not jut 5 when looking to solve a problem? #TLAP
A6) My favorite wild idea generator is the Paperclip challenge. 3rd graders come up with 50 ideas and adults in my workshop struggle to come up with 10! #tlap
A6. Analyze the problem and challenge Ss to find “problems within the problem”, then start with ideas to solve those. The best problem solvers result from first being problem finders. #tlap
Sorry to pirate the thread but let @MaggieMaslowski and I know where everyone will be Sunday night prior to #usmSpark. We will be driving in the afternoon #tlap

A7: Whenever we can provide relevance to the material we are trying to teach we offer a connection to our students. If students don't have that connection, it has little meaning #tlap
A7. When they create the problem or task they want to investigate and use the strategies below, problem solving will be a key element and motivation will increase. #tlap
A7 We need to show students that learning isn't simply done on paper & for the teacher. Let them find some real problems and solve them. They are capable, even sometimes more than adults. Let's get them engaged; let's help them become empowered citizens to change the world. #tlap
I'm using it to build Inquiry questions for my Modern US History class. Ss create the questions we want answered for each unit. Then we figure out how to answer them - together. #TLAP
A7
When we connect what students are learning to real world scenarios, they will be able to understand the topic more deeply and help them solve problems. #tlap
A7: It gives them a real world audience or allow them to truly test their ideas so they get true feedback about their ideas. This feedback can then be used to make changes/improvements/test new hypotheses. The more connected to the real world, the more genuine the feedback. #tlap
A7: students are motivated when they see a reason for their task other than “15 points” or “because I said so.” You get much higher enthusiasm and creativity #TLAP
A7: I don't know about you all, but while I learned some good content, I didn't learn too much about problem solving from a worksheet about Tommy who bought 200 tomatoes and gave 40 to his friend Jerry. Real world scenarios bring relevance and teach life skills! #tlap
A7: If students see value in the Qs being asked, they will be more motivated to solve it. The more practice students have the better they will be.
#TLAP
A7: When you bring the real world into your classroom & connect Ss to real problems & a real authentic audience, then suddenly it's not a game or box to check. Suddenly, Ss buckle down & get to work. The gloves come off. The sleeves are rolled up. It. Gets. Real. #tlap
A7: I love read world scenarios because they gives students a taste of what problem solving will be like in their future careers--no more learning/working in silos. An integrated approach to problem solving that uses all content areas. #tlap
A4: I used to have Ss generate a list of significant events in their lives. They keep it in their writing folders. I share my list. If the writing well runs dry they grab something different out of the folder. Some of them made us cry... #tlap
Q7: The question is... how can it not? This is the ultimate learning experience! It allows students to see how they are connected to the bigger picture (the 🌎) How their ideas, their actions, make an impact. #TLAP
A7 I think it gives students more purpose and a hands on approach adds so much more meaning for Ss especially when they can connect it to their passions and skills #tlap
A7: When they see the relevance, and get to talk to those who can make their ideas work, or better yet - get to make those ideas work themselves... that's epic! #tlap
A7 I think anytime we connect it to the real world we make it relevant and relevance makes the mind work/process it in real terms = improved problem solving #tlap
A4: I love giving students choice and not always telling them how to fully do something (like a project for example) Especially when they’re collaborating... I find it helps them figure out how to work together + pull all skills to be successful! #tlap
Q4) Collaboration is a perquisite for innovation to occur. How can we help our students realize collaboration isn't just working together but understand how to utilize everyones unique skills and abilities? #TLAP
A6: It also takes lots and lots of practice. They need to build up stamina for generating all types of ideas. For the past week my Ss have been brainstorming for a new persuasive argument each day. They are starting to get faster at it but it takes time. #tlap
A7: Learning and finding solutions becomes stronger when Ss see how it connects to the real world. If they see it as a stand alone, there isn't the same drive. When it connects to the real world especially close to them, Ss have a vested interest in helping to solve it. #tlap
I am still fascinated how I listened to @JayBilly2 on @PodcastPD during my drive down to the Middlesex High School and then seeing him give an inspiring opening for @Unlocklearning2. Teacher-driven PD in New Jersey is very powerful! #unlocklearning
A6: I think it comes with practice and with a culture that fosters risk taking. I give ss #Steam challenge every once in awhile. Ss don’t look up. If we frame our classes so we aren’t the giver and keeper of all knowledge, ss start to rely on each other and not the tt. #TLAP
Dh is teaching 8th grad sci for first time. I suggested using looney tunes cartoons to discuss Newton’s laws. Give them a fun hook. Ask them to explain why cartoon physics are wrong #tlap
A7: I don't know about you all, but while I learned some good content, I didn't learn too much about problem solving from a worksheet about Tommy who bought 200 tomatoes and gave 40 to his friend Jerry. Real world scenarios bring relevance and teach life skills! #tlap
A7: Again, it’s putting their learning into action. It answers why they have to learn the subject material. Ss need to build connections between what they learn and how they can use it outside of school. #TLAP
A6: If we make time and space for students to share their thinking and truly honor and value their ideas, they’ll begin to believe their ideas matter. Too often, I think ideas are quickly dismissed or shot down. Let kids wonder. #tlap
A7 - inquiry learning should happen in every discipline. Start with a real-world scenario/phenomena and then acquire the skills and content knowledge that help you understand it. That’s how problem solving works in the real world. #TLAP
A7. If we can connect their learning to real world problem solving, then we are getting our Ss to be self sufficient, out of the box, type thinking, creative problem solving skills they can utilize in their future. #tlap
A7: When Ss see there’s a real need and that their solutions can make a #REALedu difference, the buy in is significantly higher. It’s about having an impact. Being part of something bigger. #tlap
A7: I've seen this first hand through our Innovation Lab projects! By giving the Ss a real world problem, it really lit a fire in them to solve it! Each team worked well together to figure out the best solution! They love knowing their ideas can really make a difference! #tlap
A7: Finding relevant real world problems can give a little urgency to Ss to find solutions to problems that need to be solved for their school or community. #tlap
You're welcome! I'm still giving feedback on them so more will be added shortly. We have informational stories as well as search and find and more. So proud of my kiddos. :) #tlap

A7 The real world scenarios provide the relevance to motivate Ss to learn more. The content isn't disconnected and there is some form of cultural and life relevance. #TLAP
My Ss questioned Shakespeare relevance. So after reading, they get to argue for or against keeping it in the curriculum. Education is like an ogre. It has layers and sometimes it stinks 😂 #tlap
A6. Got the idea of 'faucet thinking' from @BuistBunch - 'Letting ideas flow. No idea is a dumb idea, so allow your brain to go where it will and see what happens.' #tlap
Q6) Ideation means sharing your “wildest ideas”. How can we challenge students to come up with 50 idea and not jut 5 when looking to solve a problem? #TLAP
A7: Well, they probably paid attention in the first place so that helps. I prefer real stuff over equations about real stuff. It reaches a different population of my class. Learning differences. Equity. #tlap
A7) I try to connect student with professionals in various industries in person and via video. They appreciate learning (and hearing from them that school is relevant) from these guest and gain new perspectives of what they need beyond good grades. #tlap
A6: Giving them time. Time to come up with ideas without judgement. Creating a safe classroom environment is key for this. Try not to place too much emphasis on a particular way of thinking or make it clear that any one method is not “the right way”. #tlap
A7) We need to trust students with real world problems. If we treat them and speak to them like they are the smartest most empathetic and creative people with the biggest ability to create change we will see success. #tlap
A5: I love having students create things using @Flipgrid! Before we went on winter break we had students create infomercials for ugly sweaters + record on @Flipgrid! #tlap
I tell my yearbook Ss when they are assigned to cover an event to get pictures. For every 50 pictures you take, we get 3-5 really good shots, and we never know which ones turn out to be THE shot until we comb through them. TAKE LOTS of SHOTS. :) #tlap
A7) As a writer of consequence, a student becomes a natural problem solver as he strives to find the right word or works to put the comma in the right place to convey meaning to his intended audience. #tlap
A7. There is no learning without the presence of real - world scenarios. Minus application, it is just memorization. Memorization isn’t learning. #tlap
A7: S need connections to real life in every subject area. They need a purpose and how it will help shape their future in order to foster critical thinking for life #tlap
A7 Real world has to become critical in all that we do. We need our students invested, excited and ultimately empowered to make a difference in their world. Otherwise what is school real about? #tlap
A7. During the time they are seeking solutions to real world scenarios, they will learn valuable lessons about their plan and reality. Talking about this first might help them tackle reality head on rather than become discouraged. #tlap
A7: Students truly engage when learning experiences are authentic and meaningful. My Ts have aligned their PBL experiences to the @GlobalGoalsUN. The response and investment from Ss has been incredible because they are solving problems that impact their world. #tlap
A7 ask them to solve a problem in their world using any available resources. Then work back the processes they used. Can that work in other problem areas? #tlap
A7: When we ask students to tackle real-world problems, we let them know that we believe their ideas can make a difference and we show them that they matter. #tlap
A7: I used to give my Ss 2 wks to go do something at home that they've never done before & report back to the class. It was awesome! Everyone was encouraged by everyone else. #tlap
A7: My dad died in 2012 from cancer, the movie, Everybody’s Fine, Robert De Niro, is brought up during teaching conversations. When De Niro looks at the phone lines and tells the lady next to him that he spent his life working to provide for his kids really makes an impact #tlap
A7: I bring in an authentic audience of judges at the end of each unit! When Ss can shine in front of respected adults its powerful! Relevant, meaningful, empowering....magical! #tlap#EducatedByDesign
A6: by creating a safe space for students to realize they can share any and all ideas. A space where they won’t feel put down for the idea they shared or tried! We should be empowering our students! #tlap
Q6) Ideation means sharing your “wildest ideas”. How can we challenge students to come up with 50 idea and not jut 5 when looking to solve a problem? #TLAP
Y'all.... no lie... this is the MOST precious thing! I can only imagine what that must feel like! So so so special to watch this!
Yes, I teared up. Twice. Don't judge me. #tlap
A7: Ss will want to do better when they understand how it connects to the real world and THEIR world. Relevance is a major piece to improving Ss problem solving abilities! #tlap
