Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
A1) I love this list as it's all in #LATIC every day! Students solving real-world problems, picking learning activities, making a schedule, working with others, using design process. #LATICchat
A1 We were lucky enough to have @gcouros speak at PD this year! Choice, connected learning, self assessment in activity lists, innovation, critical thinking, problem solving/finding in pbl tasks, reflection and voice in HGs #LATICchat
A1 I see all these thing in #LATIC especially where Ss schedule, make choices about learning and solve real problems in collaboration with others #LATICchat
A2 Right now we are actually fine tuning an activity list setup that works best for us so Ss are identifying the problem areas they find with the activity list structure! #LATICchat
A2 When Ss find the problems that relate to their content, then they have internalized the content at a personal level and with a felt need! #LATICchat
A3 These describe all the ways we want students to attack to problems they find. These lead to innovations and new solutions that can change the world. #LATICchat
A3 I always push Ss to take risks & challenge themselves with their approaches on learning/practicing skills & encourage them to try out different means of learning (SGML, videos etc) to help them grow as learners. My fave ? is "how can you solve that?" #LATICchat
Great question! Important for them to engage in #divergentthinking too ... "flip the plan" and try a new way of learning and problem solving! #LATICchat
A5 Giving answers and having Ss develop the questions is a great strategy. Also when things aren't working asking them to identify that and why it isn't working before planning for solutions--makes things more authentic too! #LATICchat
#LATICchat A5 embracing the inquiry design model provided by the NYS social studies framework and having home grown curriculum allows for opportunities for students to address authentic compelling questions
A5 I feel like #LATIC is all about the new standards inc. the Mathematical Practices and the Cross Cutting Concepts in NGSS. It’s all about inquiry moving forward #LATICchat
A4 S’s are encouraged to problem solve and through collaboration and communication we can foster a better understanding of empathy. S’s can and will change our world #LATICchat
Authentic learning comes alive! Our 3rd grade Ss presented to our current and future retirees on where they should vacation in the future. Each one was presented with a book!
A5: The standards are about going beyond understanding to #application. If/when Ss are entrepreneurs and innovators, they have the ability to apply their learning of the standards to new and novel situations. #LATICchat
A6 Once Ss become problem finders, they automatically want to take action to solve their problems! #LATI pushes Ss to independently go out and find both problems and solutions, giving them the tools necessary to do so #LATICchat
Keep saying it and living it with them every. single. day. School has been about "getting the right answer" for SO long that we have our work cut our for us to shift that paradigm! #LATICchat
A6 S’s problem solve based on felt needs these lead to spiral or tangent ideas that aren’t shushed or discarded like a traditional classroom. Instead they are accounted for in the Rubric or dealt with and incorporated from the Park Lot #LATICchat
In true #laticchat fashion I am going to answer questions in my own order A1 I love this muckraking project where S's became investigative journalists and challenged the status quo of the school system https://t.co/qHrGja12jU
EF is SO important and we've found that that's a challenge for a lot of our Ss this year--it's great to see the structures pushing them to work on it though! #LATICchat
A7) We had a teacher whose students examined the cafeteria menu and made recommendations for new foods: snap peas and angel food cake. The cafeteria director added them! #LATICchat
A7 We're working on a math unit in which Ss will be developing a math game around math concept(s) learned during the unit to add to our established math games. Ss are super excited and I can't wait to see what they come up with/how they respond to each other's games #LATICchat
A7) We had a teacher whose student read a book on Jet engines and wrote to the pentagon with an idea for making better fighter jets ... the Pentagon wrote back. #LATICchat
A7 Industrialization ALU culminates with S’s working in thinktanks to develop new product ideas for 2037 in 12 different aspects of daily life. Designs displayed for public view and comment #LATICchat
A7.2 ALU for Westward Expansion S’s design a historical marker including text, size, shape and location and submit to National Park Service. ##LATICchat
A7 #LATICchat so many great projects I could share, but here is a recent one S's created to share with parents. It is an online magazine aimed at helping kids make healthier choices. Authentic audiences help build social capital.
This entrepreneur will have her surfboard design 3D printed ... I guess her authentic audience will be all the people she flies by on the street. ;-) #LATICchat
CA Be sure to incorporate opportunities for creativity and innovation not only in my tasks but also rubrics, AL’s, questions and expectations #LATICchat
