Hey there! Jennifer from WI checking in. I'm an ed consultant working to help teachers & their students grow as writers & the co-moderator of the #TeachWrite chat. Love the topic of tonight's chat. #TeachWriting

A1: writing should be cross-curricular and part of every class, whether formal or informal. Ss should be able to write outside English class #teachwriting
A1 - I'd want parents, students (and other teachers) to know that improvement takes time and lots of writing. Improvements don't always happen overnight. #teachwriting
A2: writing should become habitual at an early age so Ss don’t fear the process but look forward to expressing themselves in a variety of ways. #teachwriting
A1 As an Art & Literacy teacher I wish that more educators understood what creativity is and how it actually happens. Creating is messy, non-linear, exploratory, elusive and often takes lots and lots of time. Quantity leads to quality. #TeachWriting
A2: I would like to see reading and writing ALWAYS taught together. Especially in middle school where they tend to be separated into 2 classes. #teachwriting
A2 I would like writing instruction to go back to the more original model of the writer’s workshop. All the early books of @FletcherRalph & his most recent book, Joy Write, lay it out beautifully. I also love that Ralph is a writer who teaches writing. @HeinemannPub#TeachWriting

A2 - #teachwriting - All teachers as 'teachers of writing' would help students know that writing is like speaking, important aspect of all disciplines.
A2: I'd like to see writing time in every classroom, every day. I'd like to see it raised to the level of importance that reading has attained. #TeachWriting

All art forms are a form of text. Visual and performing arts are all about exploration of and effective communication of ideas/experiences just like written texts. #teachwriting

In Q4 we'll discuss how this can be enacted/what it will look like in 2 mins. I use portfolios, but is it realistic for all current classrooms without change in structure/emphasis/testing? #TeachWriting#TeachWrite

A3: writing cannot be overinstructed/guided with rubrics. Ss need to be able to write freely and without fear. Their confidence is most important. Ts should coach with care #teachwriting
A3: I struggle with putting a letter grade on writing. I believe in assessing it -- looking for growth against a standard -- and using this for goal setting, but giving it a grade can have devastating effects. #TeachWriting
Joy Write (Joy) is applicable to all arts classes, not just writing. Playfulness and free exploration have to be part of all creative environments. #teachwriting

A4: Ss given time and space to write, not to just get it done to please T or be graded, but to learn about themselves so they become more confident #teachwriting
So true! Culture of school and "ranking" (Peter Elbow) make assessment an uphill battle. Maybe more transparency in what we are trying to do? #TeachWriting#TeachWrite

A4 I think embracing the older workshop model would bring more joy, exploration, playfulness to the writing process. In all the art forms, quantity leads to quality. Joyful engagement is going to lead to quantity, not grades and rubrics. #TeachWriting
A4: The biggest impediments that I hear to implementing portfolios is difficulty in standardization . If instruction and assessment are related, then a good assessment should reflect good instruction. Good instruction is differentiated. #teachwriting
Acknowledging the need for differentiation is huge! Portfolios allow for common goals while honoring writers' varying needs, levels, etc. #TeachWriting#TeachWrite

A5: People generally want to see something working before they try it. Start with campus/district teachers and admin who want to try something different. Others start to notice when things start working. #teachwriting
Grass roots style! Smart! Wondering about resources/places already showing "something working" that we can look to. Any examples we know of for portfolios in practice, for example, instead of testing? #TeachWriting#TeachWrite

A5: Admins need to be a part of this conversation. They need to make it part of the school culture and show Ts that it is okay to think outside the box when it comes to writing instruction & doing what's best for kids. #TeachWriting
Love the push for admin to create a culture of "play" and encourage Ts to share their ideas, try things. Open our doors, let all see the good writing stuff going on! #TeachWriting#TeachWrite

Have a book coming out on using visual texts to scaffold/support students with their comprehension and writing craft. Out this summer/fall through @stenhousepub Great for striving students. Might be of interest to you. #teachwriting

A6 To enact meaningful change in writing instruction, teachers need access to quality professional texts and professional development/discussion. #teachwriting
Have to say goodnight, #TeachWriting friends. Thanks for the thought-provoking inspiration!
We would love to see you for the #TeachWrite chat on Monday, 2/5 at 7:30 pm ET. You can sign up for a text reminder here: https://t.co/lYIb7rLV1p.
A7 ask them. Have them write about it. Ask them how they would like to learn. Have them read about writing and writing instruction, so they are informed-reading empowers their writing voice #teachwriting
very true! If they are asked, they need to see something change as a result of their voice. Even a small change reflecting their voice can make a BIG difference with how much they will contribute. #teachwriting
Here is a basic idea of how the arts are related to reading/writing. And here is a five minute video about The Art of Comprehension: https://t.co/X2UK8CphxL#teachwriting
