Hi, #novaedchat ! MSLA English teacher! Spent our snow day getting caught up on grading, got a workout in, & now reading “Do I Really Have to Teach Reading?” By @ctovani 😊 All of which was #fueledbycoffee
A1: Timely feedback can mean giving students feedback within a reasonable time frame but also making sure the feedback is relevant aka actually useful. #NoVAedchat
A1: ASAP. If it’s a parent/coworker it needs to be before the point where I’d need to say “sorry for the delayed response.” For students, within the same school week. #novaedchat
Feedback needs to be "as timely as possible" especially for primary students! In a perfect world, it would be immediate! Is this always possible? Of course not! #novaedchat
A1 Timely feedback has to be within 24 hours or Ss and sometimes Ts lose the context in which the learning occurred. That moment might be lost. #novaedchat
A1: @teachforthem taught me last year how to meet with students right after assessments to talk about their misconceptions. That kind of feedback builds trust and relationships and allows for super-personalized support! #novaedchat
YES! Building this trust and strong relationships help build the culture where feedback isn't because we're wrong... because we can be better #novaedchat
A1: @teachforthem taught me last year how to meet with students right after assessments to talk about their misconceptions. That kind of feedback builds trust and relationships and allows for super-personalized support! #novaedchat
This is so important, but so many Ts and admin miss this key point. If you give an assessment, but don't meet with the Ss then how can you work to build Independence or have the Ss know what to do to improve? #novaedchat
I tend to think more in terms of content v skills... It is easy to automate content-knowlege feedback and make it immediate. Skills feedback requires so much more time and attention.
Right - if you're not giving feedback, reteaching, re-mediating, or not going to look at it again, what was the point in giving the assessment? #novaedchat

A2 When Ss or Ts don't get timely feedback, we can develop bad habits and assume what we are doing is good enough. It does nothing to push us in to improving ourselves and our practice #novaedchat
A2: I get irritated because I feel that the person who observed or evaluated me is looking for negative feedback. I feel that if I receive it in a timely manner, I can adjust my practices and implement what they want me to. #NoVAedchat
If Ss only got feedbacks at the end of something they wouldn’t know if they were on the right path. We must teach Ss to do personal feedback too...they need to reflect to learn too #Novaedchat
A2: this makes me think of being a first year teacher.... feedback from other T’s, admin, and my mentor was so important for my overall growth and each day is an opportunity for feedback! #novaedchat
A2: When I don’t get timely feedback, my feelings depend on how I felt when I did the task. If I think I nailed it, I want feedback to confirm if I did or didn’t. If I think I failed it, I want feedback to know how I can fix it. If not, I may dismiss the whole thing #NoVAedchat
A2: It depends. If it is something that I worked hard on then not getting timely feedback makes me feel as though my efforts were pointless and unappreciated. But at the same time, we are all busy and things happen, so I always try to consider that. #novaedchat
A2 All feedback is impt.& can still be useful. Late feedback is less effective & not connected to much of the context for Ss as they have moved on. Ts might not feel as if the learning was valued #novaedchat
A2: I don't know about you, but I feel horrible and like I failed the Ss or Ts I am working with. Challenges I face as being an Instructional Coach is wearing many different hats and finding that time/balance. #Novaedchat
A2 Another problem if you don't receive feedback on a regular basis- sometimes when you finally are receiving feedback is that it's too late ! You're already in a huge problem and are trying to dig your way out! And the feedback is probably negative! #novaedchat
This is a huge nonverbal that is sent to Ss when they don't get feedback on their work. Its sending the message that it didn't really matter. #NOVAedchat
Yes, I've thought this too! If the feedback is delayed, I start to ask myself if I even care anymore to receive the feedback. It seems so irrelevant when it isn't immediate. #NOVAedchat
You're so right. I'm finding that not having a Central Office Supervisor to get feedback from on how I am doing or what I am supposed to do has been making my job harder. We as ITRT's are swimming, but I feel like we are just treading water. #novaedchat
Q3: When I was in a resource role, the debrief process was difficult to schedule with Ts because of the business of the day. I would observe, then move to another classroom. I learned to send a calendar invite to give feedback to Ts who I worked with. #NOVAedchat
A2) If it isn’t timely, I feel like it’s wasting everybody’s time. If it’s too late to be useful, they wasted their time writing it and I wasted my time reading it. Especially when I get it a month later and they want me to “reflect” on the lesson and feedback then! #novaedchat
A3 It's hard to find the time! Really effective feedback is personalized and specific and timely... so it's hard to find the time to do this for all! #NoVAedchat
A3: As a 7th grade English T, grading 130+ essays in a timely manner is a challenge! #icanonlydrinksomuchcoffee 😬 We did collaborative essays this year, which gave Ss a chance to learn from each other but also allowed me to give much more timely feedback! #Novaedchat
A3 Something that's difficult is that Ts often have so many responsibilities to accomplish. Taking time to give feedback that's very intentional, specific, and timely to each student can be a challenge! #novaedchat
A3: The hardest for me to give is when I have to correct a colleagues comments or actions. I am always afraid to hurt someone's feelings, that I would sometimes rather stay quiet than say something and offend them. Definetly something I need to work on. #novaedchat
A3; Last year I struggled with the time piece- I was giving feedback too late during PBLs. This year I am trying my best to hold mini meetings with each group each week. I have seen a huge improvement quality, creativity, etc. #NoVAedchat
A3: Struggles are not knowing expectations clearly, but then be expected to meet goals. Google Classroom has helped with some of the time and some feedback with Ss I am working with. Though it is still not perfect. #Novaedchat
A3 Another challenge, is keeping the praise-to-criticism ratio in mind when giving feedback for it to be effective! Spoiler alert: it's 5:1 #novaedchathttps://t.co/zKAePMdC4z
A3: W/ Ts it is about time. Right after the lesson can't always happen b/c class needs to be covered, or planning is taking up w/ something else or I go to another room #prioritize#novaedchat
A3: I struggle with providing positive feedback on report cards. This year I have a difficult student and finding positive feedback for his report card was like pulling teeth from an elephant. #NoVAedchat
A3) I think the biggest issue is having TIME to give timely feedback. With over 100 kids a day, it’s hard to be able to give them feedback as often and as quickly as I wish I could. It’s why I always let them redo assignments for the same amt. of credit. #NoVAedchat
I have seen great success when we restructure our classes/activities ... allows us to give feedback to a portion of students each day, rather than all 150 at a time! #NOVAedchat
I love this idea. Mini conferences as part of daily classroom routine, regardless of what we are doing? Will have to think about how to implement that kind of structure. #novaedchat
A3: using comments feature and email collaborators option in Google have helped save me a bit of time when giving feedback. Ctrl+alt+m to make comment, Ctrl+enter to post! Also tag students so they know to look! #NoVAedchat
A3: In the process of giving feedback, I also have to think about providing time for Ss to read, process, and apply the feedback. Otherwise, my feedback will likely not serve its purpose. #Novaedchat
Back in the day with journals... i collected 5 per class each day, could keep up with that instead of 30 per class at once. When it's not at the end of the assignment, in process feedback can be staggered #NOVAedchat
#NoVAedchat A3: I've found the most meaningful feedback I've given this year is divorced from timelines... I've been writing (handwritten!) notes to individual students each day. Not grade related, special and different. Kids listen way better.
A4: The thing I love about feedback is it helps me identify common areas of weakness & areas to celebrate! I typically keep a Google Doc of “common comments” to copy/paste into Ss’ work. This helps me plan f/u lessons! #NoVaEdchat
A1: "timely" is soon-ish. Ideally, it's back within a few minutes or days but realistically I'm lucky if it is back within a few weeks #APteacherlife#novaedchat
A4: Feedback good/bad, verbal/nonverbal has a huge impact on how the Ss or Ts will be motivated to change. You have to know your audience in order to know what kind of feedback will be most impactful with them otherwise it can have a negative impact. #Novaedchat
That is true too, but so many other demands are pulling at T time, how do we carve out the time, short of adding to the to-do list everyday? #novaedchat
A4: I think student feedback offers us the opportunity to establish an honest relationship with students. It also can be used to drive our instruction because when we take the time to give feedback we identify areas of improvement. #novaedchat
A2 I get frustrated and confused. Do I move forward with what I am doing? Do I change one little thing? everything? I totally get where students are coming from when they have to wait a while for me to get their stuff back to them #novaedchat
A4: I’ve been waiting to use this graphic!! What works at what cost: giving feedback to Ss is listed at number one for influencing student achievement. And it’s free!!! @AndreaHand2#novaedchat
A3 Getting to everyone when they need it and being able to spend the time to give them all of the feedback they need to be successful. Biggest struggle is time and number of students in my classes #novaedchat
A4: the positive impacts are endless, but most importantly, giving feedback builds relationships with students because they know you care about them and their successes #NOVAedchat
I love this. I think we have to model, model, model! And to go with this... we need ppl to learn that we don't just want all pats on the back. I need to know how to keep growing, even when I'm doing a great job! #NoVAedchat
We have to keep modeling a growth mindset and believing that risks and failures are a part of our learning experience. Set expectations for courage, not success.
A5 Specific and immediate feedback can help us ensure we are meeting the needs of all of our learners! I love tools such as Google Forms & Plickers that can give the T data immediately! #novaedchat
A5 shoutout to @alicekeeler and @PintoBeanz11’s book Google Apps for Littles. There’s a whole chapter on providing personalized feedback electronically! Love that she says her favorite way to give feedback is still in person, though! #novaedchat
A5 Higher frequency means a greater likelihood of catching minor issues before they become major problems and the ability to make quicker corrections to keep the learning moving forward #novaedchat
A5: Specific and Timely feedback helps to guide our instruction. If you don't know your Ss needs then how are you teaching them? You're just throwing information out at them hoping they get it. Google and the different apps along with @plickers has been a game changer #Novaedchat

A6 Moving Forward ... I want to figure out where to put my #ObserveMe on my desk somewhere. I want to get feedback from my colleagues I work with every day #NoVAedchat
A6 Moving forward I plan to FINALLY get my #observeme feedback form off my to do list! (Can someone be an accountable partner on this one for me??) #novaedchat
Absolutely! As a coach, I'm always working to improve too. I just need to figure out where is the best place to post it. I don't always meet in the same place or with my computer ... figuring it out! #NoVAedchat

#NoVAedchat A6: work on more intentional face-to-face, individualized feedback. Schedule 3 conferences a class period? That would equal bi-weekly check-ins, and seems feasible.
Ooooh I like that idea! My email signature is getting crowded... will need to simplify! I like this. I can't wait till we have a day to work together. I know we'll both learn from each other!! #NoVAedchat
A6: Moving forward I plan to.....continue to working on becoming better at giving feedback to Ts. I have always been good at giving feedback to Ss, but moving into this role as an Instructional Coach I have struggled at times with being too blunt. #Novaedchat
