A1 I even recall my college LINGUISTICS professor who also taught French- was Grammar, Grammar, Grammar, even though he had a PhD in linguistics. #langchat

A2 at the intermediate level...well, I have no idea how to transition from parroted statements to spontaneous language production without structures. halp! #langbook
  • VYinLA Oct 11 @ 8:24 PM EDT
I agree. Structures get a bad name today, but they support competence which in turn supports confidence. #langchat A2

"Grammar geeks"--I like that one. I think it most helps those who do not have a native-speaker in their life. Gives them support and structure. #langchat

Help! What is difference between #langbook and #langchat?
  • mmeshep Oct 11 @ 8:35 PM EDT
In #langbook we discuss a book and in #langchat there's a non-book topic of discussion. We switch off every other week and have different moderators.

My kids journal every week-end, using mainly vocab/verbs that they know. The journaling allows them to put building blocks of lang together to express their thoughts that spontaneous language doesn’t allow. They turn their journals in, then we discuss the weekend. #langchat

Thank you! That explains why my Tweetdeck for #langchat was really slow!

They can write about anything they like, why the color blue is dumb, whatever they want. It’s play / ranting for them. And writing allows them the time to check notes/vocab, which doesn’t happen in the spontaneity of conversation. #langchat

Shamelessly posting my best Back to School Nite ever thanks to a #langchat post which suggested asking P to write a congrats note to their K. I added a grit (growth mindset) note and P wrote amazing stuff. Keeper! Can’t wait to start sticking these on assessments.

To help kids jump from parrot to creator i also to take the vocab phrases in textbook, or cheesy song lyrics, and tweak them. We change tenses, make them negative/evil, switch out subjects or object pronouns. They see the building blocks and how lang works. #langchat
