"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com

Mel from KCMO- Middle school admin... On purpose! 🙌😁
Mike here from Indiana University, joining a little late but excited to be here
hey. Christine! Awesome to see another T join
A1: Pish students even further than they think they can go. Take them to the edge of their comfort zone.
A1: Ss need to analyze, reflect, &work together to expand on background knowledge.Teach them they are never done learning.
Reach out to PLN to join you.
I love purposefully giving them something a little out of their grade level. Some rise to the challenge; others get humbled
A1: challenge them to do extra enrichment assignments and converse 1-1 about their skill/try to make them feel it's special
Hi all - Brent in California! ESL teacher, 1st time to participate in
A1 supporting students at all levels by challenging & providing activities that push their knowledge by creating & applying
A1 Recognize talent and up the rigor and challenge. The knife can always been sharpened. The task can always be enhanced
A1: Give Ss opportunities of different ways to use their talents. Ss teaching their talents, for example.
A1: Always push just a little further... They'll realize they can always take it one more step! Challenge is great!
A1: have to challenge them to think beyond the box. they love that comfort zone of a box.
A1:By sharing Plato's insight:
"I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing."
A1. Foster the motivation. Don't put them in their place. Don't make them be helper w/o guidance for advanced learning
A1: Put in back on them to teach! Student-led lessons and activities, peer feedback, all that good stuff
A1 I set them up for challenging experiences that they fail & have to collab to be successful. Inq… https://t.co/C13wXDsDcF
A1: up the Ante. Stack the challenge. Challenge them to be empowered, to share their knowledge. https://t.co/QZdWXvQjon
A1 give them jobs and let them lead.
If a student tells me they know something, I ask "So what can you do with it now?" Make something. Create something with it
Katie-High School Teacher Librarian....excited about it all; wanting to help all just like my imaginary bff Nikola Tesla
A1: Excited to push to add Risk to rubrics this yr. Get Ss out of their comfort zone & further into creativity & innovation
so I wrote an essay once on why Billy Pilgram's wartime companion in slaughterhouse 5 is imaginary
I agree with you! I like that you said "fail"- It is important to learn how to reflect, redirect & retry!
A1..Let the student teach
often Ss "help" me w/real work, they can't do it, not even close, they realize how much work they still have 2 do
Cammie from Alberta. Highschool English & Social. Joining for the first time, and late!
The ultimate challenge! Such an elegant solution to the challenge problem. https://t.co/SBTlOYmei9
A1..Let the student teach
The epitome of creating ' . Good stuff. https://t.co/V7o0BdQUFi
If a student tells me they know something, I ask "So what can you do with it now?" Make something. Create something with it
Ooo...I like the Risk category! Might have to add that to my rubrics!
https://t.co/crQP9Omjlt
A1: Excited to push to add Risk to rubrics this yr. Get Ss out of their comfort zone & further into creativity & innovation
A1: hmmmm not something I commonly encounter in gen Ed science. Maybe I'm the only one?
A1 Find out what students already know & are able to do. Next, where do they want to go? W/ realism and relevancy in mind.
A1 Ask snarky Qs like, "Since when does 'expert' mean finished? What can you do with your know-how? How can you stretch?"
A1: Create disequilibrium - open-ended ?/projects/problems - where the process is more (or as) important as the answer.
A1) Straight up style rap battle the knowledge they think they have. 🎤⬇️
A1 add a twist. Add a new piece of information and how does that change answer
Love this idea about adding risk and pushing themselves beyond expectations
A1: students with expertise I have teach others and give them leadership roles
A1 Change the parameters. Weird things up. Value bold uncertainty over sure footed regulatory.
Make them create & make models with no glue, tape or staples forces them outside the box
Yep, I think I'm gonna keep https://t.co/8QqT7RAyPa
A1 Change the parameters. Weird things up. Value bold uncertainty over sure footed regulatory.
So true. Then you're helping them set goals!
A1: Have Ss prove their expertise by teaching others Have them mentor
A1 I like asking them to think of an audience/client and customize their work to suit that
Love this idea! Reminds me of Dewey, throwing Ss off balance a bit so they have to figure out how to resolve it
A1 Make sure to give the opps to be creatives. Design thinking process in tasks helps as its cyclical w constant reflection
crew: Joining a little late, but representing from
A1: constantly look for new tech tools and challenge them. Do they have a meaningful or surface level understanding?
So important learning what they can use the info for to accomplish their own goals https://t.co/xiqIfx43G7
A1 Find out what students already know & are able to do. Next, where do they want to go? W/ realism and relevancy in mind.
Kevin from Fresno here, 8 ELA. A1: Nothing says Show What You Know like letting them teach what they know to others.
I always talk to myself, no one bats an eye anymore
Heyyyyy!!! Always great to see you, friend!
I deal with a lot of absencesl I have students who "know" the content help those who were gone. Win-Win.
A2:Use an interest inventory so you can refer back all year.G-forms work great! Build relationships &learning will happen.
Yes! There is always a next step! True experts never stop learning!
& cool to let them co-create lessons and take charge of that leadership
& you can have those students craft the lesson in a different way to deliver to the absent student.
LOL I just heard of this mythical I'd love to join, but way too early for Alaska Time.
A1 my Ss actually don't think they can do everything, they struggle w/simple tasks, don't need to make it harder yet
Totally agree. Tough part is supporting all Ss in their innovation when truly personalizing
A1 my robotics class is daily. Challenging to go above the content and teach it to younger peers so they understand
A1: As an ELA T, I also love recommending books special to some of my higher readers I have rapport w/, Such a cool dynamic
Identify classroom experts & their strengths on a job board. Allow students to connect & support others when needed.
lol ... lol ... Lol ... I resemble that remark https://t.co/BNnG9UJHmm
I always talk to myself, no one bats an eye anymore
Bingo. Identifying the tech skills behind the tech is becoming more important than ever!
I think we're all guilty of this...lol!
Always great to see you. Haven't been in before so wanted to see what the cool kids are up to!
A1:"Experts" share their knowledge, evolve their ideas & test their knowledge continuously. Have S experts package content.
Snarky works well in HS. 😂 application of knowledge is a huge stretch for them usually. https://t.co/uZBa6YpCT8
A1 Ask snarky Qs like, "Since when does 'expert' mean finished? What can you do with your know-how? How can you stretch?"
Agreed. I think this is where ed tech is so helpful - personalization and differentiation.
I agree with that. Anyone have a tech squad of students at their school that help out? Like a tech desk
Agreed. If personalizing then the Ts must have tools to support various innovative & innovative ideas
I love advocating for real world project work, aspire to apply skills for smthg greater w/ impact
A1 Let Ss choose how to demo knowledge : skits, raps, sings, models, writing, one on one, podcasts my favorite
Too early for FL time ... I feel like I can't focus that fast after school 💜 https://t.co/pmxZ6RIET8
LOL I just heard of this mythical I'd love to join, but way too early for Alaska Time.

You included of course! https://t.co/8cPkVEfmGW
Always great to see you. Haven't been in before so wanted to see what the cool kids are up to!
I like idea of ladders, as wrote about in Reading Ladders. Always room to move ⬆ or ⬇ continuum.
A2: To help bring families into High School, we're just launching school-wide digital portfolios to help Ss showcase work
it's getting dusky in here
A2: have fun outside of school together😎
A2: Invite your Ss who are chronically misbehaving to head your positive behavior advisory board. Shine light into darkness
A2 Creating a class family by supporting students, getting to know them, and furthering their academic goals. Caring!
A2: You have to reach out and engage your community and families. They will not come if there is no invite.
A2. Easy. Don't make the environment all about the curriculum. Invest in their interests where & when you can.
I teach MS, need to take care w/snark. Sometimes napalm on grease fire.
A2 Maya Angelou "... Never forget how you made them feel" ... Show sts you care and genuinely do https://t.co/xAeeSzPrtv
A2 Model discussion/goal setting. I shouldn't tell you what to do-we should have a process to decide how our class moves.
I need to get better at this. Defining roles, delegating responsibilities, building teams from strengths.
I teach in a village: all the students are related to each other. They share stories & care about each other.
Providing Ss a safe and respectful platform for learning will set the stage for familial bonds. Letting Ss know u care
only see Ss once a week, hard to plan that way for all 400 Ss
A2: Our team is planning a great way to build teamwork
Oh yes, they begin to trust you when they see that you are "real."
A2 I'm not sure what it is that I do, but a lot of time is spent building and taking about culture in my room.
A3: For classroom, phone calls home at the beginning of school is key.
I plan on Family Steam Night and Ps help w/ all six of my science competitions. Ps are connected & Ss focus more
A2: It's about trust and encouraging Ss & Ts to be creative and try new things. As an admin, I'll always pick up my crew!
A2: making positive phone calls home really has built great relationships with my Ps and Ss
A2: Straight up U have to be REAL! You must CARE about everyone including yourself. Relationships= gateway to achievement.
A2: create a safe environment for ss to take risks.
A2 In the classroom, I've always loved the mindset of Ts on the same side as Ss, working together to solve problems & learn
A2: Stand outside your door and greet every student as they walk in your classroom.
A2 make lrning visible in the school. Having Ss work shared on twitter or blogs breaks down the classroom walls
You can say that again! https://t.co/BdzwRuTZBG
A2: Straight up U have to be REAL! You must CARE about everyone including yourself. Relationships= gateway to achievement.
Are the tech desks run by students and set up by the teachers?
A2: Recognize attributes outside of academics and athletics. Celebrate every child for being them. https://t.co/ZyOF5D37i1
Got invited to a birthday party. Got to meet so many parents & students. All about making connections.
Let them know you care aand build the envirnment that works for them. Tech, funiture, creative spaces and programming
A2. You can also ask them how they want to learn. That simple question immediately lets Ss know you value their input. .
A3: For schools, themed nights are nice -- but, as a parents, they are difficult to attend. What are the other options?
A.2.2 Success doesn't thrive with impersonal interaction.
Never shame - ever! - or pit Ss against each other in a crush-the-competition kind of way https://t.co/KNa01wNlPU
A2: encourage Ss to attend classmates' events for sports/performances/etc. Celebrate personal successes in classroo… https://t.co/EwmGyNPcN5

At open house bonded with parents by creating an artifact w/ makerspace so fun & Ps had fun now they trust me
A2: Attend S's events like games and activities - show you care about them more than just classroom.
Absolutely agree, if you don't want to care of people don't be a teacher https://t.co/C6ToyyF6sT
A2: Straight up U have to be REAL! You must CARE about everyone including yourself. Relationships= gateway to achievement.
A2: my school is small & we naturally focus on the "family-like" environment. Ss go out & support each other @ their events
A2: keep it real, be humble, have fun, be willing to listen and learn, laugh, and have a growth mindset.
I am all over this!! https://t.co/PA4lNI1EHu
A2: Attend S's events like games and activities - show you care about them more than just classroom.
A2: You keep it light, keep it about them, get to know their interests, sit with them when you talk, don't stand over them.
Learn every kids name. Use them often. You won't regret it. Learn something about each kid. No excuse, I see over 1,000 Ss
A2 Weekly class meeting to reflect on last week and set goals - builds community. Spend the week helping reach goal
with music by and each morning!

can help w/ this. Helped me get one started at my school
A2: Also, Ss need to feel safe, cared for, loved. They need to know that we are all !
I like that you said breaking down the walls by sharing out with others. Trying to use to connect
A2 we don't, I don't think, tho Ts at my school may think they do
PREACH IT! https://t.co/CR7s9IW8YL
Absolutely agree, if you don't want to care of people don't be a teacher https://t.co/C6ToyyF6sT

Learned about the 210 process spending 2 mins with a student for 10 straight days to build relationships

Learned about the 210 process spending 2 mins with a student for 10 straight days to build relationships
I haven't heard that in soooooo long! My son's now 8.
love the "celebrate every child for being them" & each one is unique!
A2 how many K-5 elementary specialist Ts are there here? How do you find the time?
I'm sure the DMV is hiring.
A2: It's all love! Make everyone on campus feel your love and care for 'em with your actions
A2 get to know Ts, Ss, Ps. Discover their interests and their stories. Use their names every chance you get.
It would make a lot of sense to hear DMVs are staffed by disgruntled teachers
Tell someone you work with you love them every day 👌🏻
Lol, although we don't want them there either, maybe become a coroner https://t.co/3Ed9rmHjwU
I'm sure the DMV is hiring.
A3: Student mentor-mentee program. Great on paper but fumbled in implementation

A3. Student led Helpdesk in our Middle School. Difficult b/c time was limited. Need to get creative with time limitations.
but I mean, really, what's real? It could all be a simulation... and this could have happened 10 times over.. 🤔
Wanted to have Ss make a cell T-shirt they just didn't work so we made giant cells instead.
A3: Offered green screen course 4 Ts one showed up. Proceeded as planned one of the best sessions as a trainer
A3 My media empire attempt last year was derailed by kids who weren't on board. Reminder 2 survey kids b4 choosing ideas.
it's hard finding "guinea pigs" sometimes. Ts who aren't afraid to fail and let others learn from mistakes.
Infrastructure has thwarted many a great plan... it's tough when the problem seems bigger than us https://t.co/emZR2PYtpA

keep moving forward and find the money to upgrade the infrastructure
A3 whole group math fail with very dif levels. Now small grps w/ help of exit slips to support needs. Grouping for success!
Is it a co-op among grade level Ts?
especially at a Title I school- Love is so important.
A3 Student blogs were a bust - didn't do enough to teach about online communication and feedback. teachable moment
A3: I really wanted to do a school blog that is student led and it's just been busy and I really want to get it going!
Def lots of logistics there and training involved for the mentors. https://t.co/uohDuaM1n0
A3: Student mentor-mentee program. Great on paper but fumbled in implementation
learning should be FUN! You said it!
Yikes,I need more than 140 characters to share all of my fumbles and mess ups, but it always comes back to support!
I require the ss write their names @ first. Keeps them honest w/ their answers. Then scaffold to no names
Agreed. I am finding are the most important tech skills to integrate.
A3 technology, keep trying, but Ts keep fumbling, or avoiding, don't know the path forward
I like the idea of survey with students before starting something new- gain support!
Intriguing idea, James. In my case, classrm-based & fueled by standards-based S evals + feedback loops.
A3: Digital Composition Books. They made their own, disaster. I made a templates 110 slide deck. Worked better.
Look for grants. Ask what needs to be done via the local provider.
A3: I wonder about choice of iPads vs other 1:1 options OCPS tested 6 options at diff schools for a year before choosing
it happens during a special instructional time, wish I could do it with all Ss
New Greenhouse. Teachers dont visit it! In Spring, lead effort for each class to plant something/be invested!
You will, and when you do share it with us!! https://t.co/iGUkEBn5Av
A3: I really wanted to do a school blog that is student led and it's just been busy and I really want to get it going!

A3: Some things I want them to create, some things I just need them to use.
Me too. I love pencil & comp books we use as well as
YES! The first year it went well and then imploded the following year
for real or for fake who knows
It's their time, too, May as we'll make sure you're doing stuff they'll appreciate.
maybe have a meal one day? During school or Ss take home produce?
Absolutely! Model that grit https://t.co/tbCLbjOsty
A3: My first "unplugged" coding lesson was a disaster! Just powered through and tried again the next day! Be resilient!
it's way bigger than that
Am I paranoid, or is Eric hinting that the ball (or player) might've been intentionally deflated? https://t.co/UpakR9LXLj
A3: as a newbie, when things get fumbled, picking up the ball usually begins with getting pumped back up by someone I trust
A3: warns us that we're trying to reach wifi kids with landline strategies... we've got to evolve
A3: also, tried Edmodo with my Gifted classes last yr as and didn't set clear guidelines on posting. So much goofy spam 😂
A3b Were all set to do back to school only to find school blocked ughhh
Like take-the-ball-and-go-home bigger?
Cherish those peeps! . . .
Boom. https://t.co/L52qTngaGp
A3: warns us that we're trying to reach wifi kids with landline strategies... we've got to evolve
I was thinking same thing! Failure is how I grow, learn & perfect my practice! 1st PD make great test sub 😂
A3: If we are willing to learn from our mistakes, it shows the students they can too.
A3 Continued- Laugh it off and keep on trying!
A3: I think every teacher is better 7th hour compared to 1st and 2nd each day. Learn from mistakes and adapt!
God bless you good sir. No more PPT trainings. More effective presentation trainings 👏👏
I like the idea, but they can choose not to add the @ and still be anon. Can make mand. login as an option...
A3 back 2 school breakfast. Tried to use buncee for the 1st time for summer vaca pics of staff. Couldn't get it to loop.
I know ... I'm hoping to start small - post it for me & your coaching partner https://t.co/A4Oj6V6gyD
it's hard finding "guinea pigs" sometimes. Ts who aren't afraid to fail and let others learn from mistakes.
A3: standardized testing in computer labs, scheduling nightmare
Ugh! Huge nightmare! https://t.co/Au59pSKa8Z
A3: also, tried Edmodo with my Gifted classes last yr as and didn't set clear guidelines on posting. So much goofy spam 😂
My mistakes & failures are as much apart of me, my teaching, & my creative process as any successes
Teambuilding should use gross motor skills, have an intellectual component, and can't be completed by a single person.
I did the first few times. Then save it as a PDF. Helps hold them accountable
A4: Don't just shove Ss into stupid little games. Tell them why teamwork is important and have an activity that proves it.
A4: I love a great Engineering Design Challenge because it forces teams to design, test, fail, rethink and try again.
oh lawd! Turn your text notifications off! 😂
Can't go wrong with food I must say!
A4 Creating something new. Collaborating towards a common goal. Hands on group work. Applying new… https://t.co/cAWKIcahZ2
A4 Funny is good. Off campus is good. Not killing my pre-planning week when I'm trying to get room ready is nice...
Got added to a list by LOL
YES! That's always bad & when the internet decides to go down the most!
A4 Team building that involves authentic creation or design seems to hold more water with my Ss.
A4: purposeful fun makes for great team building. Oh and coffee, really good coffee!
Activities that embody everyone's talents & strengths. Showcasing innovation & best practices relevant to my team
Sorry, resorting to another analogy: Possible to play smaller game? Less w/all T's, more 1-on-1 efforts?
That is so very important. Find someone you can be honest with and can help you get back in the saddle!
A4: using systems and protocols to team problem solve.
Will revisit. I was disappointed - would prefer to explore than just to do boring worksheets or whatever.
A4 One that utilizes each individual's strength(s) in such a way they had to have known each other well enough to succeed
This. https://t.co/kifbgJLVsb
A4 Funny is good. Off campus is good. Not killing my pre-planning week when I'm trying to get room ready is nice...
A4: Everyday at my site. 5-6 Ts & Prncpl gather outside one building & debrief the day, prepare for next.

This one right here...building relationships shouldn't stress out the team! https://t.co/6zxnZ6zlBM
A4 Funny is good. Off campus is good. Not killing my pre-planning week when I'm trying to get room ready is nice...
A4: I'll say it again I promise I'm not getting paid to promote
A4: Like most things. Is it relevant? Are there cookies? Coffee? Donuts?
A4: Instead of rallying teams around an imagined problem, tap into their strengths to close achievement gaps.
oh my goodness I love it! Kids are the best!
A4 For structured, at-school team building, my limited experience w/BreakoutEDU (or equivalents) has been pretty good.
Anything u want to permeate, start from top & work down. Admin together, then admin w/ Ts & so on. https://t.co/90D8iG72Uc

But what if you don't like the same ones?
A4 Circle chats about politics and religion are always good team builders.

I love a good retreat w/ ropes course! Mostly b/c I'm terrible w the course & find out true friends
A4.2 1 w/activity choices. Not all like their teams built the same way. (Is that notion antithetical to team-building?)

when you live near the "worlds most famous beach" you capitalize on it!
A5 It should, but it doesn't have to start there. I think some teams gel from the start & others need to marinade.

A5: YES. Just like we need to care about Ss to get them to believe in reaching a level they didn't know they had in them
A5: Caring in general is needed. Not just to care, but be willing. Don't leave anyone behind. Everyone counts.
A5: No, but it certainly helps when you actually like those you work with. However, we ask Ss to do it, so we should too.

A5b When we don't care/respect/support we become silos. Rely on ourselves. Get negative. We are spiteful of others. We fail
