Welcome along to for another week. Tonight the topic is "The impact of tablets and apps in education" SIX questions coming up.
- Question 1:
Rolling out tech - What has worked best when rolling out new tech or apps at your school?
Easy to use, interactive and engaging for students and teachers alike.
You mean, children in reception?
Yes Quick, easy and familiar to all, mainly https://t.co/YGqLUUeErr
Using chromebooks was a good example at my last school.

Any difficulties in rolling out new in your schools?
https://t.co/aqJXXSDpPI
Edmodo as my virtual classroom. Great app, easy to engage with for both staff & students. Similar format to social media apps.
- Question 2:
What has been the most successful roll out of apps that have made an impact on learning?
I think IT do not support your ideas or do not know how to implement it in school is the biggest barrier
Indeed, there can be a mismatch in understanding the requirements needed for successful use
We find lots of support to Leaders is needed. Your time is precious!
Need to get a head start quickly

- Qu 1:
Rolling out tech - What has worked best when rolling out new tech or apps at your school?
Not sure I understand what you mean?
being able to connect isthe biggest problem for me, the network capability just isn't there
We move School Performance Planning and Teacher Standards into one system. This is a big hurdle that can be daunting :)
Agree and being IT literate is essential if we are going to equip the students to enter the world with skills
Why are posts by the 'account' not showing when I search the ?
What kind of activities have you used this app for in class
If you are a new mum returning to work you can refresh your skills with one of our courses! https://t.co/4Naoj48OdK
That’s such a frustration. The infrastructure needs constant investment
- Qu 2 recap :
What has been the most successful roll out of apps that have made an impact on learning?
The roll outs where the curriculum was augmented by the apps, rather than the app leading the curriculum.
Digital Leaders learning the apps, demoing to staff and supporting in lessons has been great
Q2: We want to support the philosophy of school leadership with . It works!
https://t.co/l7RY0FVIg2
- Qu 2 recap :
What has been the most successful roll out of apps that have made an impact on learning?
A standards framework designed to support your quest to raise standards within teaching and learning.

- Question 3:
Apple, Android or Windows tablets? What are the pros and cons for each?
uses apps really well ... any thoughts on best roll-out apps for use in school, digi road trip?
Is the app used by whole school? Is there any safeguaring questions raised by SLT?
I think we have to accept that Apple will not be beaten for some time?
https://t.co/Aso7VOH9Se
- Question 3:
Apple, Android or Windows tablets? What are the pros and cons for each?
from my exp. Windows tablets are just used like laptops...missing the point
Network capabilities slow down performance. syncing all apps and devices takes a lot of time..
Android will be better as Apple needs more investment unless its pro Apple in school
Late, but happy I made it to join in! ...
i used Edmodo so much with 1:1 ipads. Increased learning at home dramatically!Chn chat about work!
To me, they have the speed, apps and reliability over the competition. The main downside is cost!
- Question 3 recap:
Apple, Android or Windows tablets? What are the pros and cons for each?
We use Apple because of reliability and similarity of all devices. But in theory they are complicated to get best use out of
We use show my homework at school so don't know if this can be used.
I've never found a reliable android system - doesn't seem to last?
That’s positive. In all subject areas?
Agreed. Cost plays a big part but the cost of a tablet abandoned after a few days is much higher
A3 I've had experiences with Android and Apple. Both satisfactory .
Perhaps, Android was a bit more user-friendly (no accounts).
Agree, but also the teachers have to buy into the tech and invest time in finding quality resources
As with a lot of tech,I feel there's a MASSIVE gap between companies and schools. They appear to be great, in reality, hard to use
I have no issues with apple but wold be a barrier if there are no ipads
Can I answer Chromebook instead?
Well, yes. And they are soon to accept Android apps as well.
This is a learning curve for most staff. They don't see it as part of their role, yet spend ages writing a lesson plan.
sorry :p too much switching and i'm missing s everywhere!!
sorry :p too much switching and i'm missing s everywhere!!
Mine already does - but not on my School Account :(
It’s ’s way of hypnotising people
A Chromebook tablet is the answer to a lot of problems!
https://t.co/e97xuv2U3S
Well, yes. And they are soon to accept Android apps as well.
3 simple tools Ks1 ks2 for staff/confidence/collab all free and platform agnostic-
You know where the door is ;0)
i do love my chromebook and my ipad. Device agnostic?
Pleeeeease speak to us Matthew. Gaps between technology and schools is our specialty :)
Apple, within Warwickshire, do offer subsidise CPD to integrate technology into schools.
If we don't have ipads that might be a barrier in using Apple apps at school
- Question 4:
How do you plan for the times when the tech fails?
Just for - Question 4:
How do you plan for the times when the tech fails?
Great. Any good KS2 or 3 apps you can recommend Julian? https://t.co/GjZe9B5nWY
3 simple tools Ks1 ks2 for staff/confidence/collab all free and platform agnostic-
interesting. Why not ks2?
I will defi check it out. I am always looking for new apps and software
A4 Just go outside (or to the gym hall) and play!
Paper copies of the iPad? ;0)
set chns expectations - tech doesn't always work.
So great hearing teachers' thoughts on apps and tablets in the classroom. Please keep it coming!
It does look good and interactive. Defi worth a trial in class
surely not always? 99% of the time that's a waste of paper!
A4: Don't plan for it not working. Preempt issues and act on that. If tech then fails...well can always improvise a lesson
A4 As I have mentioned in earlier chat sessions: in education, is the key-word. So true for the tech-non-tech balance too
I am at the moment doing old school marker and white board as the electrics have cut the projector off
A4: I find colleagues flustering when tech fails or cuts out for a while a massive issue. Response is to not return to tech.
does device choice affect your / choice?
What is most disturbing is that you had that picture to hand ;0) Is that your lounge?
My “core tool” for KS3/4 is Google Apps For Ed
they never worked when i was at school...or at least the teachers couldnt use them!
- Question 4 recap:
How do you plan for the times when the tech fails?
You keep telling yourself that. It’s an opportunity to SLEEP ;0)
but my question was about and not the device!
https://t.co/xIfx1x3IDf
by knowing your class and with experience. Every teacher should try a day every term with tech and see what happens
Its a challenge to keep students engaged and yet learning :)
- Question 5:
What is the most creative use of tablets and/or apps that you have seen in education?
Now that’s interesting, as pupils will have grown up being supported by tech. We are turning a corner.
it's part of teaching ethos shift- teacher doesn't have to be 'all knowing'
Special tweet for :
- Qu 5:
What is the most creative use of tablets and/or apps that you have seen in education?
True and its challenging for visual learners as they can't see pictures or video to support their learning.
the iPad native apps: Safari, camera and Airserver... most powerful edtech tools IMO at delivering impact in classrooms.
i would build on that and say choice...chn should learn when tech can help them and when it's a hindrance...
How do you motivate your students?
Agreed. Fortunately getting more and more people to respond with 'give it a go' and suggest ideas to deal with it.
What's about at the moment? Tech?
As we’re preparing stdts for jobs of the future - many not in existence yet - then they need to know the tech basics
And on the teacher's side : must never be an aim in itself, just one of many means, I think ...
Great to hear from you Do you mean by showcasing their work to classmates and world beyond?
i have never got AirServer to work effectively in an educational setting :(
You’d better call Dave ;0)
certainly at Primary, but would be tempted to say Google Classroom/Drive/Docs at Secondary /6th Form
Indeed. Flipside is when it works the engagement is huge. So swings and roundabouts I guess!
- Qu 5 recap:
What is the most creative use of tablets and/or apps that you have seen in education?
Keyword = CREATIVE
Definitely. I am constantly having discussions of how IT will dominate their lives which I find shocking
Considering how much social media and youtube they watch
A5. Not most creative ever, but yr3 kids enjoyed taking selfies of themselves with containers to learn about common measurements
Lots of ad tweets pop up during UKEdChat these days!
Indeed, but surely education should adapt to this, as it clearly works at their level
no vle plus the fact that classroom creates indiv copies of resources and auto saves is hard to beat
THAT sounds great Did you blog about it? Would love to see it.
yawn. I'll give it a miss then
Instead of waiting for marking feedback.
Very effective and immediate, great for primary & SLTs who have vision and don’t want written evidence :-/
Agree and the more lessons incorporate IT the more richer the experience will be and ingrained in their minds
https://t.co/xqEjSI0Qgm
haha! no didn't think to! Tech is new for them and such a novelty. Selfie a common everyday thing...seemed to work!
- Question 6:
Let’s conclude by giving a shout-out for apps that are regularly used successfully in your school
Works at home, struggled with school wifi !
My answer to SLT is "Talk to my pupils/look at my data!" If they're not prepared to do that &take that as evidence then?
https://t.co/E5ilO8lRFS
My answer to SLT is "Talk to my pupils/look at my data!" If they're not prepared to do that &take that as evidence then?
basic annotations in Seesaw on a photo, progressing in Showbie to say a PDF even a SAT paper dare I say :-)
- Question 6 recap:
Let’s conclude by giving a shout-out for apps that are regularly used successfully in your school
A6: Padlet, DK timestables, QR reader, Scratch Jr, Flickr, ClassDojo, Dictionary
Obviously doesn't replace marking but allows you to move pupils on quicker and focus on other misconceptions.
It sounds like the basis of a great article for Especially our BETT2017 edition ;0)
I used seesaw a bit last year to see what was possible with it. Nice app
Really enjoyed the tonight. Learnt about some interesting apps. If you have time please join at 9pm! I'm hosting:-)
It really does help shift the traditional model to a more fluid approach & changes the make up of a classroom.
https://t.co/u6l8T1nM2z
I'd completely agree with Google Apps. Shift in whole school culture to adapt, share and collaborate.
Oh and Skitch App is a must too 👍
annotating PDF’s is a good way to cut print costs and time wasted at a photocopiers. Schools print obscene amounts!
