In preparation for Super Tuesday tomorrow, it's time for tonight's chat with on lowering the voting age .
-
Looking forward to tonight's chat with !
-
Hey : should it be ? Come share at
-
Q1: In what ways are students left out of the decision making process in their schools?
-
Q4 How can we create/foster partnership schools where families and students are consistently engaged in meaningful ways?
-
Q4 How can we create/foster partnership schools where families and students are consistently engaged in meaningful ways?
-
A4. Provide ample opportunity for stakeholders to get involved in planning. Those that plan together, do together.
-
-
A1: They aren't informed, notified, encouraged, or invited. If they take initiative, their contributions aren't often embraced.
-
Most of the time they aren't even informed. Knowing what is happening is merely the first step.
-
Q2: What can we do to give stus a more meaningful voice & platform to influence decisions about their ed & school?
-
is every way an acceptable answer? the opportunities i've come into are far and few between.
-
That our systems don't embrace honest, actual disclosure and transparency is itself problematic
-
Why do you think students should be able to vote for school board? And don't forget the hashtag!
-
A2: Carve out real space for their voice to matter in real ways for real things. Until adults release some power, it'll be tough
-
students have a major stake in the game, and research shows they are more than ready to vote responsibly
-
exactly. and most of the time students just want to know what school leaders are actually thinking.
-
students are not included as partners at school policy decision making table.
-
make sure that every conversation had about students includes students.
-
simply listen give Ss the opportunity to sit down and share their thoughts, ask questions and act
-
Right, and/or "what do I need to do to navigate this system as effectively as possible"
-
Q5 In your classroom, what channels exist to give STUDENTS a voice in decisions that impact them? cc
-
promote and implement programs like the Student Bill of Rights :)
-
-
agree students MUST have place at table, space to voice opinions, be involved in decisions
-
A2 We must ask students and then we must listen, finally we must act
-
-
A5 Am interested in hearing from practitioners on what channels exist 2 give Ss voice in decisions that impact them?
-
A4 Here is where invitational learning comes. Create culture of trust where voice is honored. All stakeholders involved.
-
Q3: Should students be allowed to vote in school board elections? Why or why not?
-
I think this would be a great opportunity, students have the best knowledge of the affairs or school.
-
make decisions transparent & create multiple, recurring systems to make those decisions and get feedback
-
absolutely! I'd love to see a student on the board but voting for members for sure.
-
indeed they should. Voting for representation and change encourages discussion and participation.
-
A3 What a great question - what role do our students play in giving all that serve them, including me, feedback?
-
at very least, they should vote for own student representatives. Those Ss should have full voting rights.
-
Yes! SB elections directly affect them, voting reinforces civics classes, & it establishes a lifelong habit of voting
-
absolutely. the school board impacts students more than anything, why shouldn't we have a stay in it?
-
Q4: What about your school would be different if students had more representation?
-
Love seeing , so evident in your choice of apps/resources with your students.
-
policies would not just be assumptions.
-
A4: Ss would likely be more engaged and empowered, as we all tend to be when we own more of our circumstances and possibilities.
-
yes, tho perhaps only HSers, & there should be efforts to educate & engaged Ss in local affairs too
-
A4 All of our schools/districts would better serve students if we listened to them more around providing a better learning exp
-
-
Students would know they are valued and feel more invested in their education.
-
better communication & understanding between Ss, teachers, and admin
-
Cut out the middleman, so to speak? Interesting. Don't forget the hashtag so others can see your thoughts!
-
Tonight's Call to Action: Share an example of how your students can directly impact classroom or school-level decisions.
-
Ss would also feel more involved in school community & invested in their own learning
-
Has there been an attempt at NHS and/or NMS to encourage Ss or to participate in this chat?
-
students would feel a greater ownership over their education and be more active members of the school.
-
Q5: What would be the repercussions of lowering the voting age to 16 on the local level? On a national level?
-
Take leaders of student organizations seriously! Invite them to speak at staff meetings!
-
A5: More youth would likely be politically active and engaged in their communities and lives.
-
A5: Legislation would be conceived, crafted, and implemented with a more refined representation of the total population.
-
A5: Politicians would need to spend (more) time dedicated to speaking to the issues that matter to younger voters.
-
-
Sounds great! It may be a good way to help decrease voter apathy among young people nationwide
-
it would be controversial... Many people around my age don't really care. .
-
so it's systematically skewed against the students? Don't forget the hashtag so everyone can see your tweets :)
-
How do you explain their apathy? If circumstances and context changed, might their cares?
-
Thx to all who joined tonight to talk abt lowering the voting age w . Tune in next week as we tweet live from !
-
First of all, there would be much better organization of the scheduling of school-wide events.
-
Absolutely - I also think important to find a way to do it on their time - perhaps a school day slow roll chat?
-
more control on how it's worked
-
Thanks to and for a great chat about lowering the voting age. See you next week at !
-
. LOVE it! Hey : thoughts on a chat during the school day, enabling Ss to participate from school?
-
Undocumented students that come from oppressed backgrounds be in environments that encourage speaking up
-
Of course. 1 that's part of the problem is seemingly attacking, and 2 schools that do could participate.
-
Offering a chat during the day puts more pressure on adults to put their tweets where their mouths are
-
brainstorming a few new ways to engage students virtually. Like this! May see it soon.
-
Missed tonight’s chat? That’s ok, there’s always another one. Next week, we're headed to .
-
Hey : how would this fly in your district (i.e., a during-school-day chat)?
-
-
Recruit to help. That dude is a BEAST.
