follows a Q & A Format. Q1/A1 Q2/A2 and the first question starts in 1 minute.
First Question coming up in 1 min
Q1 How does a successful home-school partnership impact student achievement?
A1: Regardless of where the Ss come from home is a always important to them.
A1: Parent's are the child's first and best teacher. We are always to be mindful of that fact when we engage them.
glad to lead the discussion
A1: the partnership enhances S's achievement. P's are involved, communication is 💪🏼 , and a community is built.
Q2 Beyond scheduled school events like Back to School Night and P-Tchr Conf, how do you engage the families of your students?
A1: If parents support their child's learning/successes in education, students will be more motivated in the classroom.
A2: Callouts, Title I events, open house events that permit significant time for parents to talk to teachers.
A2: Go to the students' games/recitals/performances. Interact with parents and siblings there.
A2: This year I created a FB group where parents are required to join so their child can have access to discuss math/science.
Thank you! Glad to take part!
A2: Also, and most importantly, for the first time in my memory, our AP and Intervention Spec. are doing mass home visits!
Q3: What are some of the roadblocks that impact your interactions with families?
This is a great idea! https://t.co/xo9dJrZ3nn
A2: This year I created a FB group where parents are required to join so their child can have access to discuss math/science.
I love home visits for the shock value! LOL.
It' has been slow going but they are starting to get on.
A3: Language has been our biggest road block and parents not wanting to let go of apron strings.
A3: If you relocate to the district, just being a new face in the community/ school setting.
A3 language has been an obstacle for us.
Q4: How does your school share information with Ss families (ex: paper, websites, apps, social media, etc.)?
Q3: Sometimes it takes time to work through parents who have endured "unwelcoming schools."
Ps own experiences impact how they interact with schools.
A4: My home district uses Facebook/Twitter pages and mass phone messages
A4: Our school sends out those robo calls and puts things on the Internet but I'm not sure how effective it is.
A4: We rely on dialers. Perhaps too heavily. But with our high attendance events we have to not overload parents with too much
What do you think would be more effective?
Q5: How can school administrators and district staff assist in promoting the home-school partnership?
Maybe an informal survey could collect data on how much those options reach parents
Taking part in my first Twitter Chat as a pre-service educator! So exciting!!
A4 we use Facebook, remind, and robocalls
A5: I really think our school is on the right track with home visits. The District needs to make parent feedback is heard.
You're already ahead of the class.
A5: Update families on what the students are doing in class. Encourage families to come out to award ceremonies, programs, etc
A5: I don't have a clue. I think the only time most districts engage parents is when they addressing a complaint.
Q6: Please share two successful activities you’ve used to promote the home-school partnership.
A6: As our Title 1 contact, I enjoyed the end of year parent work on our Parent Involv. Policy and other small events.
A6: It was humbling to hear how parents were positively impacted by the caring staff where I work.
did you have lots of parent involvement with developing your Title I plan?
A6: Math and Science night is always a hit with most parents.
Q7: What’s a home-school partnership idea that you’ve heard about that you will try during the 16-17 school year?
A6: Haven't tried this out yet, but using to keep parents aware of what my students are doing. Holding get-togethers.
A6 we used a parent involvement day to showcase class activities to families last year.
I think parents were heard more than most schools due to our small size and existing outreach. positively
The lower grades at my school use Seesaw.
A6 we also hosted a Parent Tech Workshop to give parents hands-on time with websites and apps Ss use each day
A7: I'd like to hold less formal meet-ups with parents where students share an assignment they're proud of with their parents.
Our 5th grade team thought about doing this but we don't have the time.
I'll have to learn more about Seesaw
Q8: A positive home-school partnership helps school communities by…
A8: ...by bringing the entire "village" closer to the kids.
That would be very powerful, spur parent engagement, and encourage Ss pride in showcasing their work
A8: Getting everyone together. Creating trust and building relationships between families/teachers. Lessening division.
Our BSI teachers and specialists were instrumental in making the presentation for parents
A8: By improving self efficacy of urban students https://t.co/r8wQCKElCa
