This is the official Twitter account for #OklaEd, thehashtag that brings OK educators together. #OklaEd is not political & promotes constructive dialogue.
Jason James ~ Superintendent of Alex PS. Son of a retired 5th grade T. Son in law to a retired T. Husband of an #oklaed T. Advocate of better environments of Ts. I have the right to remain silent, but no the ability.
Tyler Bridges, married to a teacher, father of 2 #publiceducation kiddos, and @k20center Associate Director of School and Community Partnerships. Fighter for #oklaed!
A1 – Great first step in alleviating the #OklaEd teacher shortage crisis. We will be above the regional average for teacher salaries for the first time in a least 20 years, maybe ever.
A1: I think Ts who were considering leaving might stay. But w/o new revenue, it could mean taking away from other agencies, which could hurt the state overall. #oklaed
A1: some retirement eligible Ts may stick for an additional 3 years to maximize their retirement, but #oklaed will need 4 to 6 years for the influx of new college prep Ss to graduate and fill much needed positions
Hopefully keep more teachers in the profession. Purcell had one teacher change mind on retirement. Maybe continued increases will bring more young teachers into the profession. #oklaed
A1 I believe it will have a great impact, initially. However, what will it look like in 3-5 years when funding isn't available & young Ts do not have proper tools to teach? I think it is a positive step, but the work is not yet finished. Just beginning. #oklaed
A1: I believe we see some teachers decide to stay, some retired teachers decide to come back, and some students choose education as a major. However, it will be a LONG road to recovery. Its a start! #oklaed#okleg
A1: I don't believe the average of $6100 will cause a mad rush of college students to forgo other professions for teaching, but it will have an immediate impact on #oklaed Ts who are thinking about leaving
A1. Short term - less will leave in 2018-19 and some admin positions may return to classroom but unless long term changes it will be short lived. #oklaed
A1 I think the pay raise is a start, and gives hope for a brighter future...but overall I don’t believe it will solve the shortage. There’s work to do and trust to be earned. #oklaed
We will be able to hold onto teachers of retirement age for at least 3 more years. Hopefully it will slow down the exodus of teachers out of state. But I have my doubts. #oklaed
Hopefully keep more teachers in the profession. Purcell had one teacher change mind on retirement. Maybe continued increases will bring more young teachers into the profession. #oklaed
A1: Crossing my fingers it will be enough for high quality Ts to stay and teach our Ss. Also, previously working in higher ed, I hope it recruits grads out of #oklaed colleges and not to Texas :)
I may be also - I have no faith...although this is a historic raise, properly funding education shouldn’t be historic. AND is there enough money to lower class sizes....#oklaed
This was a great first step. Only continued investments in #OklaEd and time will tell. We may need a generation to pass before we know the full impact.
A1: we have yet to see this raise. So many trying to take it before it even makes its way onto my check stub. I’ll believe it, when I see it. #oklaed zero faith!
A2: If it has dedicated funding, it will be a positive change, but if they keep trying to undo the good they've done, it will hurt every other agency, which will in turn hurt #oklaed
#OklaEd Lurking at least temporarily suspended. A1: Depends upon how much of the $5435 to $8820 is necessary to buy resources not provided, medical expenses due to large@class sides, new taxes that are undoubtedly coming, ...
A2. Not a huge increase in operational money, but we are glad to have it. Start undoing all that has been done for the last decade. Well deserving people will get a raise! #OklaEd
A2: Increased budget will have a profound positive impact on #oklaed ~1st time in 8 yrs we won't see a cut. Influx of $ for T pay. Infusion of investment in the formula for operations. Textbook money. All of this is revolutionary and non existent for the better part of a decade
Q1: Very little this year. If someone is inclined to move elsewhere for a better teaching gig, this raise isn't enough to deter them. No one is convinced that the raises are assured, and classroom funding/size barely impacted. #oklaed
#Oklaed receiving more new money in 2018-19 then anytime in history. Fear of repeal and other issues just political rhetoric. Budget is approved and signed by governor
A2) One would hope that this will mean more resources restored in places where cut, added staff back in vital places, and better learning opportunities for #oklaed students.
A2. I hope Oklahoma community members will see the benefits of the state adequately funding all schools instead of wealthier suburban districts getting nicer things because they can pass bonds. Too much? #oklaed
A2) I would think that schools will take deep breaths, fix budgets, and the little extra money teachers will make can help the economy a little bit. This question is probably out of my realm, but I’m trying. #oklaed
A3 – We need a plan similar to the recently completed Roads and Bridges plan. The #OkLeg should appropriate an annual increase for #OklaEd until we are also competitive with our regional peers in per pupil funding.
If #oklaed Ts want to leave then I support them. However, 18-19 budget by #okleg is the first time in 10 years #oklaed has been given new revenue. $500million is amazing when compared to our recent history. Take the money and run. AND WORK TO INCREASE IT NEXT YEAR.
True, but the funding isn't guaranteed. So my husband, a state worker, could be laid off due to the change if new revenue doesn't pay for it. Then #oklaed would be out another T, too, because we would leave if that happens.
#Oklaed receiving more new money in 2018-19 then anytime in history. Fear of repeal and other issues just political rhetoric. Budget is approved and signed by governor
I mean I’m not going to pat them on the back for doing what they should have been doing all along. I don’t get a pat on the back every day I teach. #oklaed
Work on lowering the cost of #highered so that future #okaled teachers are not starting their careers in a huge financial hole. Also need to increase funds to hire more teachers to lower class sizes. #Oklaed
A2 As with the pay raise...it’s a start but there is more to do! We have to continue our conversations and change the mindset of #OkLeg Our Ss are our greatest resource. #oklaed
Q3: Fund the public education system up to par to where they #oklaleg would be proud and comfortable to send their children to public schools. #oklaed It has to starts with respect for the profession.
Q3: Long term funding plan~ I'd settle for the elimination of almost all of the tax credits we give out of state corporations. I'd also be happy with someone explaining to me why there is a difference in tax rates for different types of energy generation? #oklaed
Ideally, yes. But how many will be positions lost due to recent budgets? It is a start and any help is welcomed at this point. The pendulum may be swinging in a positive way for #oklaed
#OklaEd So very, very sad - but for me, so predictable. The legislature in Oklahoma, I believe, has purposefully made education & teaching toxic and dirty in OK, then trying to bribe teachers with salary increases. What in God’s name would happen to OK students w/o Ts staying???
A3
Step One: defeat whatever Tom Coburn puts on the ballot.
Step Two: elect a governor who believes in adequately funding core state services.
Step Three: campaign for and elect legislators who support #oklaed
A3: There needs to be dedicated funding with a minimum guaranteed. Quit trying to take $$ for private schools. And increase funding a bit at a time until our kids have what they need. #oklaed
It tells me two different things. 1. There is only $120 per Ss difference between next year and 2010. 2. If you cut off the bottom half of the bar the data looks much more appealing #oklaed
Q3: To have a longterm funding plan, #OKleg needs to bring in consistent and reliable revenue (by taxing those at the top). More money in collected by the state = more money in our schools. #oklaed
A1: Currently there are 32,000 certified teachers who are no longer teaching in an Oklahoma public school. We surveyed those educators and 31% said they’d consider returning w/competitive pay. #Oklaed
I mean I’m not going to pat them on the back for doing what they should have been doing all along. I don’t get a pat on the back every day I teach. #oklaed
A2) We can actually adopt math textbooks. We can slow the exodus of teachers to other states, careers, and retirement. We may even add a staff member or two. #oklaed
A3) Any long term plan must include continued teacher pay raises and continued GR funding to restore cuts. Something similar to the roads and bridges plan would be incredible. Regional pay is achieved, now lets get to regional per pupil. #oklaed
A1 I think this pay raise will keep teachers if it is allowed to go through. Idabel sits on the edge of two states. It might not bring back those who have gone, but it might prevent others from going. If teachers don't get it is will be a hard blow. #oklaed
Veto Referendum: OSSBA’s legal team has put together the following information to answer some of the frequently asked questions we are hearing from school board members and administrators. We will update the FAQ information as it becomes available. #OklaEdhttps://t.co/VM1d1OOSnd
#ugh call me Debbie Downer tonight, but this thing worries the heck out of me - our state is sooooooooooooo conservative with this kind of thinking. #Oklaed
A3: we have to start with both sides of the aisle agreeing that education should be a priority. Until then they will never agree on anything. 1 wants Cap gains, 1 wants wind tax, neither are willing to compromise. We were told they came to an agreement. Lies! #oklaed
A3 going bigger than #oklaed, #oklaleg needs to diversify our income to move past reliance on oil/gas. Taxes need to be shifted off of our low-income families, i.e. the cigarette tax. I don't have the answers, but am willing to listen.
A4. This threat has sucked some of the enthusiasm from Walkout. I think it has an uphill battle. Think we need to focus on June Primaries, this has the lasting effect we need for change. #oklaed
Q4: I don't believe the veto referendum has the momentum the far right wishes it had~ I think Oklahomans are tired of the "cuts" message and they truly want to invest in good government. #oklaed
A4) I think that most of Oklahoma is made of moderates in terms of taxation and funding issues. Unfortunately, enough of them don't vote and we have witnessed what the extremists can and will do. #oklaed
Q4: Continue to LOUDLY show our support toward public education and the benefits it has on our society and the future of our communities. Often times these are excellent times for EDUCATING instead of simply complaining. #oklaed
A4) I think advocacy is not just speaking with your legislators, it’s about educating others in your community. Make sure you aren’t just talking about these things with other advocates. #oklaed
A4: At this point, I have little confidence that people will remember the purpose - and the rhetoric being used to convince others to get rid of the "additional taxes" is sneaky, which seems to work in Oklahoma. :-( #oklaed
Seriously, will the Rs at the top of the ticket want to bring in all the extra money and voter enthusiasm in the November general election? I don't think so..... not to mention it is extremely unpopular with the moderate voters. I don't believe it will happen. #oklaed
A4) We have to keep the focus on by donating our time and money to pro-public education candidates, and by keeping up the pressure. If we rest on our laurels, we will repeat this conversation in a decade. #oklaed
I do too. I can see teachers losing their damn minds, though, if Coburn gets his petition on the ballot and the funding/raises are put on hold. #oklaed
Q4: I don't believe the veto referendum has the momentum the far right wishes it had~ I think Oklahomans are tired of the "cuts" message and they truly want to invest in good government. #oklaed
A3) Our first priority is to fill our legislators willing to work together to find solutions in the June primaries. Then we focus on November elections. #OklaEd teachers are not policy wonks. We present the challenges we face and our leaders should present the solutions.
A4: the people that should vote, don’t vote. I was at the walkout with some that said I am not registered in my area to vote. I have zero tolerance for this. Fix it! Until pro education folks are voting, we are screwed in this red state. #oklaed
A4: The public awareness of how underinvestment has negatively affected children and families is really high & I know many conservatives who consider that an affront to their values. #oklaed
A4) We keep the focus on education by preparing ourselves and voting in smart ways in the upcoming elections. Our voting voice has to be heard, but educators must do their homework on ballot choices. #oklaed
Me, too! And the phrasing he's using is basically "clean up the state government," which sounds pretty appealing, even though what he means is "get rid of taxes, especially those that would help #oklaed "
A3 BEST PLAN next term #OkLeg before you make other deals make a deal with public school children...a deal to put their education before oil, wind, big business, etc. #oklaed
A4. I perceive a strong pioneer spirit in Oklahoma. Look out for yourself and your neighbor, but don’t let anyone push you around or tell you what to do.
I think that equates to resistance toward collecting taxes and especially putting them toward strangers. #oklaed
#oklaed
A4) The threat is real. Our response must be real. We must engage our fellow citizens like we did in the 2014 elections for state superintendent. Everyone talking nonstop to our neighbors is how we defeat this threat to #OklaEd.
Q4: I believe most of OK prefers to fund Ed, but with the right language and the right campaign, voters could be persuaded to vote against Ed. #OKleg sets us up to fail by always taxing the bottom and never the top. #oklaed
A5: Biggest #okleg legislation for #oklaed, IMO, the BUDGET! $480 million new $ for schools through the formula is lifeblood of infusion for Ss and Ts.
Schools (me) need to have a table set up on site to register voters within the school. Is that legal? If not it needs to be. #oklaed it’s up to us to get our friends registered!
Very few teachers I know feel like they will actually have a raise next year. That is how I confident we feel based on past history #oklaed#debbiedowner2
A5: Definitely the budget - because of all the fallout. My district is so much better for the faculty mingling more traveling to OKC and learning about the legi process together. And #oklaed is on fire, too. If we keep momentum, we'll see a huge change!
Teachers you know don't believe the pay raise will happen? That is sad. I am 100% confident the pay raises will happen. No way Oklahomans will side with Corporate Greed over Ss & their Teachers. No way! #oklaed
A5) HB1010XX showed #OklaEd and #OkLeg that it is possible to achieve the impossible when we work together. First revenue increase in post SQ640 history. Public Ed moved from a rhetorical priority to an actual priority for our state. The tide has turned.
I am throwing 100% of my support behind @JonesOK2018 in the R primary! He has a plan. He has a vision. He knows what is best for Oklahomans. He is the only Governor candidate who will speak truth and back it up with actions. #oklaed
A6: Our school has done a fantastic job of keeping us involved with what is going on when it comes to elections and issues associated with education. We get updates everyday while at school. #oklaed
A6: by following them or friending them on social media. Watching their posts to see their stance on the issues. I then pass along their stuff to my colleagues. They make their own decisions. #oklaed
A6) I’m reading about candidates. I’m listening to valid educators who have been reading about candidates. Right now I’m spreading what I know on FB and Twitter. #oklaed
A6 Dig deep, ask questions, understand why reps voted the way they voted...if you need a change get to know the candidates and their plan for change...NOT EVERY #OkLeg needs to be voted out, do your research. #oklaed
We can't relax, but I am 100% confident T raises will happen next school year. Might be after Nov when it happens, but no way OK voters reverse this. No way. #oklaed
A6) Social media is the easiest way to get information these days obviously. Several good entities put out lists each year with candidate recommendations. Plus, I'm communicating with my HD20 candidates to see what they are about. We have to get Bobby Cleveland unseated! #oklaed
Q6: all the social medias. My husband saw that his grandmother liked @StittforGov fb page and he said “gotta call Mimi and tell her what’s up!” #oklaed
Can you imagine the fallout if I'm wrong? instead of there being 2000 emergency certified Ts there will be 20,000. Maybe 30,000 T vacancies. Fear is a powerful motivator at the voter booth. #oklaed
I think you're right that voters won't reverse 1010xx, 1011xx, and 1023xx. But if we can't start the year with the raises in place, it's gonna get ugly. #oklaed

A3: We have a long-term education plan. #OklahomaEdge Fund the plan. Years 2-8 remain. ALL our kids deserve a competitive education. There are no shortcuts—no bumper sticker solutions. Requires hard work, patience, well-equipped teachers and a stable investment in kids. #Oklaed
A7: first of all this statistic is seriously disturbing. 2nd of all maybe I need to have a voter registration rally and give gifts... something to motivate my peeps to vote!!! #oklaed
I actually made a spreadsheet. When I get the time, I look up my sample ballot to get the names (and state questions). Then I Google them. What do they have on social media? Websites? Were they in the news? Incumbents- voting records? #oklaed
A7: My Ss and I have talked about politics a LOT this year due to the #oklaed issues, so many of them are ready to vote this year or next! And most will not vote a party line vote...
A7) If a valid person will show and tell me what I can do, I’ll do it. Being an inspiration is what teachers do best, but in this question, I need help with ideas. #oklaed

It depends on lots of variables..... will they even file the referendum veto? Will they challenge all of it? Will it survive legal challenges. I'm really interested in finding out if the T pay raises will even be put on hold? #oklaed

Going to sign off early. So horrified by Legislative lack of belief in importance of education, the wacky rules of operation within the legislature. I truly marvel at the number of #OklaEd teachers determined not to leave. Good night, Gracie!!! Back next week.
A7) i look up friends and family on https://t.co/McltH3DwCZ and see if they vote. If they don’t, I reach out and ask why. I also offer our group members questions wo judgement. I stepped many through how to vote in 2016. #oklaed
A6) A thorough and methodical process (can you say spreadsheets?) of examining candidates' rhetoric, votes (where appropriate), long-standing commitment to #OklaEd, interviews, and viability. We must be #Gladiators for our cause who are vigilant in working together.
A7. Maybe just generating awareness of both when elections are and what is at stake.
I’m just as guilty as anyone of leaving school and deciding to take the kids home to get started on homework rather than stop at the polling place on the way home. #oklaed
Can we put out a referendum poll too? It would say legislators get their job done in the allotted time. If not, Special Sessions would be on their dime... #oklaed
A7) I have a birthday present for every 18 year-old I know: a voter registration application. I've given this gift to countless voters during the course of my career. Perhaps I will start giving them to the other adults they live with. #OklaEd
A8: This is a bit unsettling. Since we're not supposed to push any specific political agendas at school, I'm not sure they should. But we should ALL be pushing participation in and understanding of the process... #oklaed
A8: I am fortunate to belong to a district that has a Professional educators of Norman group and I am an action team leader for my site. So they relay info to me, & I pass it along to my colleagues. We have a great system in place. I’ve never felt out of the loop. #oklaed
A8. I’m confused about the law on this one. I’ve heard some districts say that teacher advocates at the Capitol will not take leave bc it’s just working offsite, others have association leave, others require teachers to use personal days. What’s the rule? #oklaed
But the philosophies represented in this document are why we are in the position we are in to begin with. The idea that audits and trying to find all this hidden money is going to fix #oklaed is ridiculous and played out.
A7: I thought about taking the day off and subbing 30 min for any teacher in my kiddos district that needs to leave to go vote..... I’m a mother of 3 and sometimes on my own... ESPECIALLY in Nov 🏀 It’s tough to get there outside the school day. #oklaed
A8) Clinton Public Schools has a fabulous leadership team, and I can encourage teachers, support staff, and community members to listen to them. I’m sure strategies are being worked on, and many of us will get to work on them however we can. #oklaed
A8 Telling our story is critical. We have data. We have facts. We have anecdotes that illustrate the needs of our schools. We must be relentless. #oklaed
A8: Educate with newsletters and information that includes facts and charts and something a bit more "visual" than just big numbers. Teachers want to know what is going on and they want to be involved...but there is so much more to understanding legislation than just $$. #oklaed

A8 MPS has given teachers the chance to serve as delegates to the capitol as a PD opportunity, @MrBurtonMPS has scheduled meetings with reps and facilitated conversations. #oklaed
A8) Extremely important! We are educators. Our communities depend on us. We are obligated to share information relating to #OklaEd. District leaders engaging at the local and state level to train educators in the trenches how to advocate is key.
A9: We need people who are willing to be representatives of the school and educate our communities of what is going on; we cannot do this without their support. #oklaed
A9 Personally, I've started adding info about ed policy in my weekly blog post to parents and students. Without telling them how to vote, I am trying to inform them of what is happening and encourage them to contact reps. #oklaed
A9: Set good examples and make sure they are well informed of the situations and the consequences involved. Educate them as to the options. INFORM and EDUCATE!! #oklaed
A4 #oklaed needs to be sure to address the misinformation about the taxes in clear concise ways. Explain what the money could be used for specifically in your own personal classroom/school, how it will benefit the local Ss
A9: voter registration at parent night. Have a handout of the important issues facing education. Not giving opinions, just info. Ps need to be made aware so they can make an informed decision. #oklaed
I think the most important leg had to be 1010xx and any other revenue raising measures. Because we cannot begin to get where we need to be without recurring revenue! It is a funding problem 100%! #oklaed
Two weeks ago teachers need PD on ACES.
Last week teachers need PD on GT students.
This week teachers need PD on be an effective advocate.
AND all of the other duties and PD that are already part of the school day. #Oklaed
A8) Extremely important! We are educators. Our communities depend on us. We are obligated to share information relating to #OklaEd. District leaders engaging at the local and state level to train educators in the trenches how to advocate is key.
A9: We can invite them to more events and classes. We could also help with voter registration. And we can ensure our Ss know why/how #oklaed got to the point we are so hopefully we can avoid it happening again!
A9: #oklaed School Districts just need to tell their story! We need to let people know the struggle is real. We need to build relationship so that EVERYONE has buy in toward our goal of 100% student success

A9) Trust...leaders...being vocal...educate...have picnics, coffee times, newspaper blasts, volunteers, including many, be role models, love our jobs and show it, group work...on and on... #oklaed
By engaging the entirel community with local news and media. What we do needs to be shared outside of the #Oklaed echo chamber. We know what we need and must do. #Oklaed
First of all I made sure to increase my contributions to my PAC. I will work through the OEA’s Fund for Children and Public Education to bet candidates and then commit to pounding the pavement for the candidates I support! #oklaed@okea
I feel as if we are taking it for granted that Ps are informed and know what troubles us. They want to help but don’t know how. Because honestly who wants to read an entire bill? I have read so many lately and it’s so tedious. I mean even #okleg doesn’t read them. #oklaed
A8 #oklaed must take advocacy seriously. We have seen the effects of being passive in our needs from #oklaleg. Districts should keep Ts apprised of the bills being introduced and moved through #oklaleg
A9 Tell our stories, allow the community to see our needs, encourage them to register and vote, link arms with them and advocate for public schools. #oklaed
I feel as if we are taking it for granted that Ps are informed and know what troubles us. They want to help but don’t know how. Because honestly who wants to read an entire bill? I have read so many lately and it’s so tedious. I mean even #okleg doesn’t read them. #oklaed
A9) This happens at Rotary, Kiwanis, Foundation, and Town Halls. It also includes social media, Sunday school, and sporting events. Everywhere citizens gather, #OklaEd must tell our story. Our parents and community are with us. We must invite them to the battle.
A9). This is why every single teacher needs to tell their story through blogging or some other social media. Share with those outside of education. #oklaed
A9 share the effects of #oklaleg bill's locally. Stakeholders need to know specifically how bills will affect their Ss and school. It is important for #oklaed to enlist the support of our stakeholders
A10 Regular contact with Speaker McCall and Senator Simpson. I have spoken with both and share with them the thoughts of Ts in my district, not my own personal thoughts. This is about more than one person and together we can make a difference. #oklaed
A9: Share! Share! Share! We have leaders in our state and resources like @OSSBAoklahoma that share tremendous amount of info! We really do not have an excuse to not be aware! Our parents and communities need to be informed as well. #oklaed
now
#alexPS uses Ss to invite lawmakers to community events~ Academic Banquet; we have a Vals & Sals invite our #okleg. All Sports Banquet, we have our Seniors (who are registered voters) invite lawmakers. It works. Build a personal relationship & watch it grow #oklaed
I am working through TCTA to register voters and get out the vote. We will begin picketing after school this week to remind/offer voter registration! I have faith that out district will commit to no school on 11/6/18! We are organizing now #OklaEd@okea@TulsaSchools
This is something that @OklahomaPTA could assist with, or maybe town hall style meetings focusing on issues and constructive conversation. I agree we’ve got to find effective ways to share info with Ps. #oklaed
I feel as if we are taking it for granted that Ps are informed and know what troubles us. They want to help but don’t know how. Because honestly who wants to read an entire bill? I have read so many lately and it’s so tedious. I mean even #okleg doesn’t read them. #oklaed
KNOW YOUR CANDIDATES. K. Stitt on Flashpoint: *I wouldn't have voted for or signed the Teacher pay raise. *I signed Tom Coburn's Pledge. *I would not raise any taxes. *Teachers are on my heart. I want to ENCOURAGE them. Flashpoint 4 U Mr. Stitt: Teachers don't need encouragement.
A10 I think #cpsreds are fortunate to have widespread support from community leaders. How do get things accomplished is where there is disagreement and more information and opportunities to see firsthand what school is like need to be taken advantage of by community #oklaed
A10)Clinton has a great school system and avid community backing. The task of getting the stories out is easy...tell others what’s right with our school and remind them of all the contributions and support we have from the parents, civic organizations, downtown &Ts. #oklaed
A10) Through personal relationships built over time. I typically text, but I also email, call, and schedule meetings for the intentional purpose of promoting #OklaEd. Our genuine commitment to our cause of better public schools for all students is a 24/7 365 day task.
A10 Sharing my story face to face and tagging them on social media...Keeping it true, but constructive, using it as a way to build a relationship and keep the conversation going. #oklaed
