Hello and welcome to this evening's ! We're so excited that you could join us as we chat about this great topic!
As you are getting ready to participate tonight, please take a moment to introduce yourself and where you are from!
Hello ! I'm excited for our conversations tonight! I am a Middle School Ed. Specialist in Central California!
Laura here, from Chicago. I was a middle school math teacher and K-8 instructional coach and principal, all in CPS.
Tonight's host is the great who will be asking questions in the form of Q1, Q2... Please answer by using A1, A2...
Hi, I'm Glenda 5th grade from Kansas City! Newby to chats.
Q1: What percent of students would you say live in poverty in your district/school/county?
Welcome Gl!enda! It is so fun! You'll love
A1: Many schools in CPS have 90%+ low SES, although it varies by neighborhood and type of school.
Q1- title 1 for our entire district
A1 60-65% in our school maybe more...
A1 in my school about 92%
A1: We have a very large population of students living in poverty.
Greetings! Stormy here from West Texas, 1st grade teacher ... excited to connect to other ClassKickers!
We'd be really interested to look into what this level is across all Classkickers, especially considering access to devices
Q2: What tech skills do you think Ss need for college and career readiness?
A2: Digital Citizenship! Using devices and technology appropriately! Sooo important that tools are utilized appropriately.
A2: There has been a huge push for computer science classes specifically in CPS in the last few years, as pushed by CS4All
A2 Coding beyond Hour of Code. Critical thinking skills.
Agreed! Ss come with knowledge to play and watch but not create, revise, reflect, and effectively use tech.
A2: I think there needs to be a huge push on effective internet searches - using search terms/modifiers and analyzing results
A2 students need to be familiar with multiple platforms/devices so they are able to communicate and share creativity globally
A2: And students need to know how to create, edit, and modify documents, presentations, and spreadsheets!
A2: More generalized, students need to know how to search for and find help for any type of technology. (Like help menus)
Q3: How do we emphasize the importance of learning these skills with Ss?
A3: For the most part, when given an authentic need for the technology, students will figure out why it's useful
A3 Educating them on where the global job market is headed.
A3: I remember doing a fake stock market when I was in HS. I learned so much through that authentic scenario!
Absolutely - and if possible, showing rather than telling, with Skype or Google Hangouts with working people!
A3 great question! Allow them to explore and have choice in showing mastery, rather than guiding thinking with lessons
Real-world learning, YES!
Great example of empowering students with technology in tonight's .
Join us for the last three questions of the evening!
A3 great question! Allow them to explore and have choice in showing mastery, rather than guiding thinking with lessons
Q4: Where do you direct students who don't have access to technology at home?
A4 Public library if that's not possible. Volunteer time after school so they can have access.
A4: I think this is so tough! We used to take a field trip to the closest library so students could actually see that option
A4 we have a public library on corner, no tech at home makes it even more critical in class; to close opportunity gaps!
To piggyback on that - I used to volunteer my time in the morning instead because parents wanted to drop off before school
Ok made it. Doug from West Michigan
A4: A lot of teachers would work to make sure mobile sites (accessible via cell phones) were viable options
A4: library mostly or computer lab at school before or after.
Does anyone partner with a nearby university to see if students can get in there? I haven't tried it but I feel like maybe...
A4- Good q, We have 1:1 iPads and 6-12 take home. There must be pressure to pay for access while trying to pay for food.
Q5: Do you know any success stories worth sharing Re: ending generational poverty?
A4: lots of places with free wifi - Mcdonalds, mall, hotels, schools, libraries, grocery stores, more.
A5: We haven't seen the effects of it yet, but NOLA reached out to us about their equity challenge: https://t.co/okzs7x4qMx
It looks like they are absolutely committed to finding ways of ensuring digital equity across the city to change lives
A5 I have one family who had been in GP situation, but the mother (single) recently graduated from college and has a job.
A5: I was always fascinated by Geoffrey Canada and his Harlem Children Zone's goal of ending generational poverty
I got to meet him once at a Service Learning Conference in Minnesota & ask him the question of how he got to where he is now
His reply was: Kept finding jobs that challenged him&allowed him to grow until he had the opportunity to do what he wanted
Q6: What will you do this week to empower your students?
We really love seeing students at the helm, designing stickers, giving and receiving feedback to improve everyone's ideas!
Q6 Keep believing in them and the ability to reach new heights. High expectations
A6: provide positive words, encourage, praise, cheer, laugh, & learn with them!
A6: I'm working on a summer internship for Ss where they find a mentor teacher to guide them in making Classkick assignments
Students would be empowered to create the kind of assignments they would like to participate in during class for Ts to use!
A6: My students solved an open-ended lab-based problem yesterday, discussed it digitally today, demonstrated good thinking!
Thank you so much for allowing me to host this month's ! Have an awesome week!
A6: I tried to spend a little extra time with students who need a little extra support this week, remind them they are great!
Thanks everyone for your great thoughts this evening! We're always impressed with the breadth of perspectives and opinions!
Be sure to mark your calendars (or use our tool on https://t.co/tV3bkQ6uuK ) for our next on Tuesday, June 6th - same time!
