Greetings to all tonight! Ready to Connect, Collaborate, and Create!
A1 I think in every setting there are always going to be challenges. We really have to choose our attitude each day.
A1 - The vast array of varying roles, schedules, and sharing of staff in smaller schools is a large hurdle.
A1: Perceptions of inequality between grade levels in planning time, TA support, etc. can lead to morale challenges.
A1: There are many factors --> culture, climate, time of year, weather, leadership, support, student behavior, etc.
A1 Sometimes feeling like an island instead of a team. Overwhelmed w/all the issues
A1: most everything has the potential to positively or negatively effect school culture
A1 Right now--it's February. Can be a long depressing month. Not always a lot to look forward too
A1: Testing mandates can impact morale of a school...
Great point Brett...how do we get off that island? https://t.co/JJralPRxBo
A1 Sometimes feeling like an island instead of a team. Overwhelmed w/all the issues
A1: Time of year, negotiations, behaviors, new initiatives, poor communication.
A1: Lack of quality feedback, lack of empowerment of Ts, and poor relationship building all challenge morale in school settings.
A1: Sharing staff, time of year, home life, assessment time...it's all about your frame of mind. Glass half empty or half full?
It can suck the life out of the classroom! https://t.co/wZQ7TR4m9X
A1: Testing mandates can impact morale of a school...
A1: Isolation can cause morale issues...are we focusing on collaboration and inclusion of ALL?
A1: Lots of things! The weather, personal trials and tribulations, student needs, etc.
All of these are big time hurdles, Terri! https://t.co/ZlwTR7ulx9
A1: Perceptions of inequality between grade levels in planning time, TA support, etc. can lead to morale challenges.
Matt Barkalow, secondary instructional coach and 8th grade ELA at Colfax-Mingo
A1 Everything can impact morale. Impending changes, no matter how small they seem to others. https://t.co/VTNPkmg8Wp
Q1: What factors contribute to morale challenges within your setting?
A1- we have an increase in student enrollment but a decrease in staff. That makes for some tough situations
Bad morale starts with bad perceptions and attitude. You can always find ways to do things better, so be part of the solution.
A1: Too many programs and too little time. Plates that are not just full but overflowing!
A1: I think most things come down to behaviors (student AND adult) and communication.
This is a big one. Adults aren't any different than children as far as needing to feel included.
A1: student behavior (and staff's response to those behaviors) and change to be a little more specific
Make it a point to get into each others rooms. Know we are a unit. Doldrum time easy to avoid hard issues.
A1: a wide variety of views on how things should or shouldn't be done. Perception of lack of admin. support.
Small to you may seem like a bigger hurdle to others. Great perspective. https://t.co/PEBVBJ8HHW
A1 Everything can impact morale. Impending changes, no matter how small they seem to others. https://t.co/VTNPkmg8Wp
Q1: What factors contribute to morale challenges within your setting?
A1: change- fear of the unknown. Wrestling with what is best for kids and our comfort zones. Kids matter more than status quo.
A1: Perception is reality for many...are the perceptions of others causing a dip in morale?
A1) When those with “voice” in building vent, morale can dip. Vice versa, when leaders are excited, it can spread.
A1: Poor communication, lack of support, behavior/attitudes (students/adults).
This time of year: weather, grades, conferences, data, staffing but it is important to choose to be positive.
Great point Alyssa...we often forget about the adult behavior/role. https://t.co/1x1HvL9HLM
A1: I think most things come down to behaviors (student AND adult) and communication.
A1 A feeling of being overwhelmed. There are not enough hours in the day at times to do everything we want to do
A1: communication, connection, not putting student needs first, and bad weather
A1: Lack of communication can cause a breakdown in morale and distrust.
A1: There are internal and external forces that effect moral. Focusing on what's inside our sphere of control is key.
Shelly, Library Media from Eau Claire, WI, ready for my first !
Attitude is contagious! Is yours worth catching? https://t.co/ATOqjuS9Ub
A1) When those with “voice” in building vent, morale can dip. Vice versa, when leaders are excited, it can spread.
A1) New initiatives, the time of year and simply how things roll from day to day
A1b: Another one is staff feeling overworked and underappreciated..little to no recognition of progress or innovation
Have to agree — communication (or lack of) gets in the way too frequently! https://t.co/tvr38xGLDx
A1: I think most things come down to behaviors (student AND adult) and communication.
A1: Expectations on Ts, support from admin., parental support, consistency or lack of it. Also, I think of Pink's Drive.
A1 Attitudes can bring about negativity or positivity. But the only attitude you can do anything about is yours.
Question 2 coming up in one minute!
Hi - Bridget Visser, Literacy Specialist from Texas joining. Trying to multitask, so kind of lurking! :)
A1-All staff, including me, need to realize that our attitude (+ or -), body lang, energy level, play huge roles 4 whole building.
Yes! Everyone carries their own perception. Can be a challenge to see beyond your own perception. https://t.co/g5NUokVIRc
A1: Perception is reality for many...are the perceptions of others causing a dip in morale?
Hello! Amy checking in for the first time!
Adult behaviors/words set the tone for a building!
Great point Deb...your attitude us HUGE! https://t.co/PRV242Bbg8
A1 Attitudes can bring about negativity or positivity. But the only attitude you can do anything about is yours.
If we could all just think and act this way, right Deb?! https://t.co/jkzlm65Qqw
A1 Attitudes can bring about negativity or positivity. But the only attitude you can do anything about is yours.
Fatigue probably biggest contributing factor - "morale" problems minimal in Sept; plentiful in March. Bring on spring!
A1b. When we forget to celebrate, morale dips
Education is going through change at all levels. FEAR POWER and CONTROL must be overcome. https://t.co/Wixdngoqcs
Q1: What factors contribute to morale challenges within your setting?
It's why they say if you don't feed the teachers, they end up eating the students!
Q2: As the demands increase to meet higher levels of achievement, what can you do to focus on what matters most?
A1.-It's important as leaders to remain as instructional leaders and focus on S's instead of managers. Helps everyone's attitude.
All staff treated as professionals and need to encourage/admonish/support one another for Quality-Continuous- Improvement
We all have to work on our attitudes. Every day I try to find things to celebrate. Makes me happy
It’s the nonverbal / body language that are many times more powerful than verbal communicatoin! https://t.co/MWFXJqvSYi
A1-All staff, including me, need to realize that our attitude (+ or -), body lang, energy level, play huge roles 4 whole building.
A2: Always important to focus on people first! All programs and initiatives start with people!! https://t.co/f0RDnzt3CB
Q2: As the demands increase to meet higher levels of achievement, what can you do to focus on what matters most?
A2: Don't get sucked up in the office black hole. Stay visible and in the middle of the action--where the kids are.
Patrick Kearney. I serve Teacher Leadership for the Johnston Schools. Joining late.
Important for leadership to set the tone! A smile goes a long way and a little zany can help too! https://t.co/My4YCQEhqL
Adult behaviors/words set the tone for a building!
A2: involve stakeholders in the processto achieve your goals....admin involve Ts & Ts involve Ss
A2: Ss matter most, but curriculum wise finding our priority standards
A2:Celebrate frequently & loudly! Share best practices, tell your school's story...accentuate the positive...like
We need to "get altitude to get perspective". Education is not a people problem but a system problem. https://t.co/ChlDlM16Lp
Q2: As the demands increase to meet higher levels of achievement, what can you do to focus on what matters most?
A2 I know its cliche, but all depends upon relationships. Students first, stay focus on end game.
A2: keep relationships the focus at all times. Great relationships foster great things in schools!
A1: Comparing financial resources to other schools can cause frustration.
I live by the don't look hard/celebrate everything model! https://t.co/24I1hdKMJk
We all have to work on our attitudes. Every day I try to find things to celebrate. Makes me happy
A2 Listen to one another, be with the students whenever possible. They are why we are educators. https://t.co/Dt0vQbUOww
Q2: As the demands increase to meet higher levels of achievement, what can you do to focus on what matters most?
A2: remember the WHY that we are all here. FOR KIDS! https://t.co/rgaKkZ5jUT
Q2: As the demands increase to meet higher levels of achievement, what can you do to focus on what matters most?
Being a small school, our teams can often feel like Armies of One. Just have to stay POSITIVE & DO WORK! https://t.co/O0wkijsgYl
Q1: What factors contribute to morale challenges within your setting?
A2: Keep the focus on teaching and learning. Continue to focus on growth mindset & function in the “Students First” environment.
MUST attempts to make the educational system work for more students and teachers inevitably fail? Read -> https://t.co/pm5M6O8uqp
forgot to intro, Tina from TN popping for
A2: Don't let the students become the afterthought. Keep the growth mindset in place.
A2: Small things can carry much weight: people/relationships first, kindness, empathy, and chocolate, of course.
A1: Many great responses. Everything impacts morale so having positive attitude, go w/ flow, & sense of humor limits negative.
A2: focus on staying positive with other T's and not contribute to negativity. It does carryover to S's.
A2: Be out and about. For me, getting in the classroom & being with Ts & Ss to motivate and continue to build relationships.
A2 celebrating any sort of growth and achievement with students and staff. Keeping a positive attitude always helps too!
Body language makes a big impact
Celebration and validation are a must! https://t.co/dqpCv14uvV
A2 celebrating any sort of growth and achievement with students and staff. Keeping a positive attitude always helps too!
A2 I can only control what happens in my world and I need to focus on that. What can I do to help my students achieve their best
Servant leadership key 2 morale builder https://t.co/xsUss78vZx
Good evening & welcome everyone! My tweets for the next hour are dedicated to
Topic: “Building Morale When Times Get Tough”
A2: Reinforce qualities of autonomy, relatedness, competence & relevance. Works for Ts too! https://t.co/0UJi3mkC4j
The simple task of listening can be so powerful. https://t.co/umYkvgKF52
A2 Listen to one another, be with the students whenever possible. They are why we are educators. https://t.co/Dt0vQbUOww
Q2: As the demands increase to meet higher levels of achievement, what can you do to focus on what matters most?
Great point Nicole...very important to be visible! https://t.co/0ItMSTocZN
A2: Be out and about. For me, getting in the classroom & being with Ts & Ss to motivate and continue to build relationships.
It's (past) 8 on a Sunday which means time!!! Julie, HS math at West High in Iowa City, a little tardy this eve
A2 Take stock in current practices, pitch those that have little impact on learning, enhance activities that truly engage.
Yes! Always focus on people first--teachers and students both! https://t.co/lMG3xvuLjF
A2: keep relationships the focus at all times. Great relationships foster great things in schools!
A2: Fix the system, not the problems. If you focus on problems, you’ll never be done. Focus on the system & the process is easier.
A2- Building capacity within staff and including all staff in PD increases buy in and focus on what's most important
It's the students that are the top priority and making sure that each student has equal access https://t.co/CeCzwF5sxk
Q2: As the demands increase to meet higher levels of achievement, what can you do to focus on what matters most?
A2 make all decisions based on what is best for Ss keep focused on your mission and vision!
A2: Breathe - Look at your students and read a meaningful text with them. This always helps me refocus on why I love school.
Completely right! https://t.co/TIhsWmE5Rh
A2: keep relationships the focus at all times. Great relationships foster great things in schools!
A2: Build community. Class meeting and read aloud. I make sure those happen each day no matter what.
So true! How can we share the load so everyone isn’t spread so thin? https://t.co/yzaBEgn22z
A1: Too many programs and too little time. Plates that are not just full but overflowing!
A2: Focus on the process & controlling the controlables. Always things out of our control, but we can always control our attitudes
A2 In order for my Ss to do well, I have to know them as people first and respect where they are coming from, what passions are
Q2 Until there is a system redesign, we will be going in circles. Ground Hog Day.
A2 Focus on the process and enjoy the journey. If we are constantly worried about the results, it steals the joy of learning.
I believe we need to hold staff accountable, give positive praise often to T's, S's, families/caregivers
Always important to remember that love for education! :)
Q2.- Building on positive climate and culture on a daily basis and empowering students to value their own road will raise scores
Kate, this is very important in successful schools...kudos!! https://t.co/TwPq9r0dQ0
A2- Building capacity within staff and including all staff in PD increases buy in and focus on what's most important
Keep Ss at the forefront, always. https://t.co/yCzzjswB7t
A2: Don't let the students become the afterthought. Keep the growth mindset in place.
A2-Easy w ed mandates 2 4get about S & P relationships, supporting colleagues, taking care of yourself. Balance is key but so hard.
A2: View students as who they are and their potential...more than data results and test scores
A2: Developing interdependence is critical 2keep focus on the Ss. Being intentional in developing the team increases success.
A2) Stay positive and remember the vision, listen, support, celebrate the good things BIG and small-put yourself in others shoes.
Immerse myself in our kids! They're the reason for everything! What's best for S's must drive instruction. https://t.co/TRVgT3tThE
Q2: As the demands increase to meet higher levels of achievement, what can you do to focus on what matters most?
A1 agree we wear many hats to meet the needs https://t.co/krohcfQ4yS
A1 - The vast array of varying roles, schedules, and sharing of staff in smaller schools is a large hurdle.
People who can focus, get things done. People who can prioritize, get the right things done.
Both great things to build into every day that offer meaningful conversations & opportunities for empathy.
Putting constant gentle pressure on the work that actually impacts our kids. Putting off that which isn't urgent.
Always remember the reason we are there...for the students!!!
Agreed! We must remember the positive praise for ALL stakeholders
A2: Be where the kids are. It's good for the soul. Get hugs, high fives, fist bumps, smiles.
A2: focus on Ss in front of you; know them, care for them, love them, listen to them, challenge/guide them, give them voice/choice
a2: Putting constant gentle pressure on the work that actually impacts our kids. Putting off that which isn't urgent.
Question 3 is coming right up!
A2: Get out and greet students...fist bump them..high 5 them..talk to them
When work gets stressful, that's always where I go!
Breathe! That helps! Especially when your go-to peers can sense it and remind you to just breath… https://t.co/tRaS7zRFN3
A2: Breathe - Look at your students and read a meaningful text with them. This always helps me refocus on why I love school.
A2 I also can't accept less than my best or my students best when it comes to work in the classroom. Keep expectations high
Couldn't agree more Nancy....students first mentality! https://t.co/gZK1bOlRmp
Always remember the reason we are there...for the students!!!
the joys of working with children!
A2. Focus on Ss by name not statistics. Find the JOY! Remember the reason for the work.
Q3: Autonomy leads to engagement which tends to boost morale. How is autonomy built in students and staff within your setting?
A2: Don't forget to build relationships & make learning FUN. Let kids be kids. Allow them to explore their passions & interests.
A1 Circle of influence https://t.co/Al46Z7J2S4
A1: There are internal and external forces that effect moral. Focusing on what's inside our sphere of control is key.
Yes, Amanda! REMEMBER THE VISION and celebrate! https://t.co/3XPKJyr15T
A2) Stay positive and remember the vision, listen, support, celebrate the good things BIG and small-put yourself in others shoes.
A3 We are striving for greater autonomy, but it's a paradigm shift for many.
We did is as part of our Fab Feb Fridays. Walked to each door and served ice cream to teachers. https://t.co/T1y7yNOo30
love it! Would love to hear when/where you do this.
. can't get enough of the small, human gestures during the school day!
A3: For staff, we let them choose their own PD at the site-level. For Ss, we have been introducing PBL and Genius Hour...
A3 Student choice is important in my classroom. Empowers them in many ways
A3 Our PD this year is structured as "personal learning plan" so every teacher sets their own goals.
A3 Gotta be careful, sometimes autonomy leads to isolation unless admins and staff feel unsupported.
A3: Give Ss & Ts a voice, make them feel they matter. Do an Edcamp style PD & start Ss leadership team. https://t.co/1beqwUlggA
A3: Asking for constant feedback. Honor that feedback. Communicate. Recognize the challenge between autonomy and system needs.
YES! Rigor and Relevance collapse without forming solid RELATIONSHIPS! https://t.co/LNbOAcGLXB
A2 In order for my Ss to do well, I have to know them as people first and respect where they are coming from, what passions are
We are working towards making this shift as well. https://t.co/3uFwIhbiD0
A3: For staff, we let them choose their own PD at the site-level. For Ss, we have been introducing PBL and Genius Hour...
A3 Our district is allowing us to design our own PD to make up missed hours. I appreciate being able to decide what to work on
A3: Being proactive & understanding & developing supports that kids need before and as we're providing more autonomy.
A3: We have had personalized PD and our Ts have loved this idea, allowed them to work on what they need
A3. Provide choice in professional learning and student learning. Share out learning from the year to "re-unify"
A3 Each staff member has a personal goal. Students are allowed choice within classes. Need more autonomy. https://t.co/uN32LzeARU
Q3: Autonomy leads to engagement which tends to boost morale. How is autonomy built in students and staff within your setting?
A3: Autonomy increases when Ts are given choices about professional learning. and breakouts ways we build autonomy.
A3: Having administration allow you to try new ideas and say it's okay to fail and learn from it. "Genius Hour" for students.
A3: Personalize learning for Ts, listen to what they need and want to learn. Empower them to be in charge of their learning.
A3: If it’s part of the mission, vision, values- it deserves all hands on deck = release of total control to see what blooms
Nice! Ice cream! Morale-booster for sure! https://t.co/Vg2F56x8VK
We did is as part of our Fab Feb Fridays. Walked to each door and served ice cream to teachers. https://t.co/T1y7yNOo30
love it! Would love to hear when/where you do this.
Couln't agree more Steven...persoanlzed PD is essential https://t.co/k61ecyCCY9
A3: We have had personalized PD and our Ts have loved this idea, allowed them to work on what they need
A3: Student leadership team, independent tech fair projects, after school clubs, move toward PBL where possible.
Working with students this week, used an EdCamp format where students voiced what they were passionate about - Motivation Soared!
A3: Autonomy is built with trust and acknowledgement of success. Catch people being great and let them know it.
A3: For T's we do monthly tech. PD allows them to choose from 6 sessions. They choose their learning. Works well!
A3: Give staff and S's a voice in decision making...allow them to take chances and be creative
Relationships always the place to start with students bottom line! https://t.co/FHa0iqR3Mv
A2: keep relationships the focus at all times. Great relationships foster great things in schools!
A3 our students have a voice via a student leadership team. The same applies with our staff.
Yes! FEEDBACK - the right kind of feedback - is an imperative, Patrick! https://t.co/Mxgkt0F2P9
A3: Asking for constant feedback. Honor that feedback. Communicate. Recognize the challenge between autonomy and system needs.
A3 Just started a student leadership team. I'm excited they will have more of a voice
Great idea! Admin did a coffee stand before conferences for our Ts, very popular!
A3: Autonomy is built from using Ss&Ts voice. Give everyone a "part2play" distributes leading & learning. https://t.co/Qp0HQy73sS
Q3: Autonomy leads to engagement which tends to boost morale. How is autonomy built in students and staff within your setting?
A3 Staff recognition awards handed on from staff member to staff member every month. And Workout Wednesdays.
Right on Russ...their voice is very important! https://t.co/DQyPvi93ZX
A3: Give staff and S's a voice in decision making...allow them to take chances and be creative
a3: Interesting to see so many schools personalizing PD. Teachers appreciate choice!
A3: Teachers are developed professionally; they have degrees. We foster their growth by empowerment. https://t.co/mi8jsIQcgT
A3- Understanding that systems decide what u teach, not how. Autonomy is in your delivery and 2 model excitement 4 S's.
Motivation increases when T's are called into account for negative mindset; high expectations set and followed through
A3: Encourage Ts & Ss to make mistakes. & student choice through Genius Hour projects.
A3.- Professional relationships and letting students and parents know they did a good job builds a positive rapport
So fun seeing all the first timers tonight! Make sure you follow the newbies to continue to build your PLN.
I think it how incredible potential. We are just experimenting with how to get the most benefit from it.
A3: Breakout style PD has helped allow for choice-based learning for Ts. Stu choice & voice in goal setting has been powerful!
A3: ask for feedback not just to go through the motions but grow. I monitor lunches to get to know kids & gather feedback
A3: Encourage teachers to be more connected. Huge morale booster! No one needs to be a silo anymore...no excuse!
- Admins should have a clear vision of success and share that vision with staff and students. Repeat it often!
I know. I love that more and more are asking about it
A3 support leadership in students and teachers.
Question 4 coming up in one minute!
A3: I wk w/ Ts to integrate tech & I ask them what they want to learn & tailor pd to meet their needs
I would say new leadership structure to help eliminate some of the squiggles :)...
A3 My position encourages creativity, supports curiosity, and inspires me to pursue passions. Doesn't get much better than that.
Hello. I'm a CA credential student. Can someone help me get started with tonight's questions so I can respond?
Watch out, school board member lurking on . Interesting discussion.
Yes, I've been to several, and we did EdCamp style PD a couple weeks ago. It was great!
This is the shift that needs to take place for Ts PD! Personalize it and create pace and place for each https://t.co/VDyJESkMyl
A3 Our PD this year is structured as "personal learning plan" so every teacher sets their own goals.
Q4: Please respond: School morale begins at the top and when school leaders respect and believe in their staff, everyone wins.
Autonomy at its finest, Kim! Choice and voice in professional learning https://t.co/lqhaJmnSza
A3: For T's we do monthly tech. PD allows them to choose from 6 sessions. They choose their learning. Works well!
That is awesome Mindy! https://t.co/r5qNnCeBGt
A3 My position encourages creativity, supports curiosity, and inspires me to pursue passions. Doesn't get much better than that.
PD becoming more personalized. As we implement TLC & PLC, engagement & morale will continually improve. https://t.co/u5Su0IyEo3
Q3: Autonomy leads to engagement which tends to boost morale. How is autonomy built in students and staff within your setting?
A3 Truth be told. If we want teachers and students to be empowered we have to give them power.
We’ve experienced the same, Matt! On-demand professional learning! https://t.co/Wt7u57DBL4
PD becoming more personalized. As we implement TLC & PLC, engagement & morale will continually improve. https://t.co/u5Su0IyEo3
Q3: Autonomy leads to engagement which tends to boost morale. How is autonomy built in students and staff within your setting?
A4 That is the truth. But you also have to believe in and respect the students and their families. https://t.co/MV9SmO69ex
Q4: Please respond: School morale begins at the top and when school leaders respect and believe in their staff, everyone wins.
A3-All staff knows how important their role is. Associates, lunch, custodial, etc. They are all of OUR S's. Everyone plays a part.
School morale belongs to all, when A's are burnt, T's need pick up slack. Opp sure too. Seek out holes in dyke and begin to plug!
Ownership is important to success and attitude!
A4: It all rises and falls on relationships. Take care of the people you serve. Lead by modeling what you expect.
Give Ts options for PD choice & they grow WAY more than PD irreverent to where they are/what they do
A4: I couldn’t agree more…you can’t expect what you are not modeling. It has to start at the top!
Agreed!
The smartest person in the room IS the room!
just jump in and use to see questions and feel free to respond. Question 4 coming up. Welcome to
just jump in and use to see questions and feel free to respond. Question 4 coming up. Welcome to
A4: We have to overcome the factors that attempt to bring us down. We must focus & celebrate the positive.
Yes Brett...morale does belong to ALL! https://t.co/9vkDqmgEwQ
School morale belongs to all, when A's are burnt, T's need pick up slack. Opp sure too. Seek out holes in dyke and begin to plug!
A4 One of the best things we can do for morale is believe in teachers and help them build on their strengths.
