#EdTechAfterDark Archive
"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com

A3: My teachers: "Here is your goal....you figure it out anyway you want!" Mini Me Internal Monologue: "Cool! Let's go!"
Feel free, though there may be better people. I haven't done much w/ it yet.
True, I see tools like as a jumping off point 4 something much bigger. Let that awe inspire Ss learning.
Constructing knowledge, love it! https://t.co/5cYbCVee5E

A3: most of my teachers made me wonder. Just give your Ss something new. Get Ss involved. Tech helps with opportunities
A2 Yes!! Virtual field trips to locations w/ ancient historical significance! Skype w/ experts.
A good way to make someone wonder is to get them talking about something they want to discuss, then steer them from there
A college prof who asked ?s that made us explore who we were as people. In business courses. https://t.co/9KcXdfgBze
My ESOL T created a safe & nurturing environment where mistakes were seen as opportunities to grow https://t.co/k9GSNsjfea

This chat brought to you by in Inverness, FL who is providing the snacks and beverages tonight!
Is Awe something that's "not traditional", novel, engaging, and S focused/created/delivered?
Can't read that one to my Ss without balling eyes out
Loved all my Ts, but my Kinder T, Miss Powers, & my Humanities Honors T, Mr. Michalek (RIP), showed me the magic of wonder.
Great chat tonight! Will have to catch the end tomorrow. Good night
need to change this paradigm through praising exploration versus the destination and allowing time for freedom
A4: by leaving a lot of the topics/discussions open-ended. I let Ss take control of their own learning. Accountability.
A4: I like to make many versions of my lessons, multiple models to build, independent projects, passion projects
A4v1 I iterate constantly. No two lessons are ever the same in a day much less year to year.
A1: (from last place) student may have seen it all but they have not internalized it yet...digital natives needing guidance
A3:Mrs. Favela recognized I only responded with creative activities. Inspired me to be an understanding Teacher
A4: you're all invited to my class to see in action--can't explain in 140 characters. and student choice guides
awe is that look when the Ss is learning but doesn't know their learning!
A3 My mom actually, may sound cliche but she's the one that said whatever you want to do you can
Q4: leveled inquiry tasks & performance/assessment options.
Providing choice ... Keeping in tune with their interests / pop culture ... Being awed myself https://t.co/4KdV7lQ18J
A4. Plan for differences in learning styles, ways to grab their attention. Then give them choice in how they get content.
A4: I would suggest putting out student surveys to see what they want in their lessons. Multiple answers=Multiple lessons
A4: One answer to this is to have student choice incorporated to lessons when possible.
A4: All comes back to choice, as much as you can
A4: Try to connect content to something that is real to learners. Interdisciplinary approach is effective.
A4: Through S voice and choice. Use portfolios for Ss to prove their learning by collecting artifacts of their learning.
I use this as well. I have been inspired in so many ways by the results
https://t.co/SjxENAs3sI
A4: I would suggest putting out student surveys to see what they want in their lessons. Multiple answers=Multiple lessons
A4 Ss have power over their questions and creation of learning. Differentiation DONE!
A4: By breaking them up into groups and having active learning.
A4: Small group rotation structure in our room. Flexible & focused. Puts students in charge of their independent learning
A4: after 23yrs I know ALL won't B inspired. Inspire as many as U can. Stoke thefire &others join. https://t.co/yiGvD0YHzY
A4: encouraging Ss who are thriving 2 go above&beyond if ahead while showing equal interest and care for each and every S
A4) give them a starting point then don't limit the tangents they connect to it - they lead to deeper engagement & learning!
A4: Show Ss the objectives at beginning and have them develop the methods to learn.
A4: Ss set goals and then we work on a plan to help meet it and they decide how they will show/prove it.
That's not awe. That's normal. The new normal. Right?
I still go back & reread it. Still get choked up!
A4: letting students choose the topic and the tools they will use to show their mastery
A4cont: Don't be obsessed with assessment and paralysis through analysis. Time to be creative and independent means more
A4 The magical blend of rigor, curiosity, relevance, engagement, and expectation of learning. https://t.co/oZnigJOR6W
The holdouts tend to get inspired when they see the others having fun
A4 switch it up with my methods and tools. What works for one does not work for all.
Awe: Getting Ks to tell time and read on a 2nd grade level, reading outside while waiting for field day events. To eachother
A3: Giving me confidence by telling me I was good at something.
should be but too many kids are just checked out because of ineffective instructions
I agree, sm group rotation definitely helps!
There are snacks and beverages? Where's the hospitality room?
sparked my Ss to start *wondering* about things daily. All I had to do was say, "yes" daily and they were off!
Goal setting. SO important 4 keeping things on course! https://t.co/zrduLMMMQN
A4: Ss set goals and then we work on a plan to help meet it and they decide how they will show/prove it.
A3: To be honest I don't remember any teacher challenging me to wonder. I did a good job on my own.
A4: Giving Ss the chance to work with different people/giving them choice.Believe in them.
By the end of the 3rd quarter. Reigning it in for 4th so 1st grade Ts don't get too lost. .
I stay flexible. I believe adapt and overcome because you can't plan for everything
A4 Connect it to their real world experiences (we're talking kindergarteners). Turns AWE into A-HA!
Unless their handwriting is horrible horrible-then they have to use tech
A4 Skeptical of differentiation,do I script multiple conversations or allow the student to differentiate the experience
That's why I use tech myself
Let me know when you get a principal position! I will need to visit...
A3: One T wondered just as much as we did. Another loved us and the content contagiously.
A4: By utilizing various instructional strategies and assessments that cater to various learning profiles
A4) Student choice on how to gain info, produce evidence of learning. We all learn differently. https://t.co/dqNPDiT0fN
A4: asks Ss, what do you want to learn and how will you share with the group? Know standards & this is doable.
How many teachers are brave enough to give Ss enough control in the classroom to create the AWE themselves?
A4: Give Ss opportunity to work on a 20% project
Normal. New Normal. . Genius Day? :)
what do you do if their experiences are highly limited due to poverty or other factors?
A3: had teachers that had fun, took calc. risks, &threw the "book" out the window when something relevant was happening
Now we see you on the board thanks
Yes, I know. Just raising the bar.
Love this!
https://t.co/Uacfx4yJNy
A3: had teachers that had fun, took calc. risks, &threw the "book" out the window when something relevant was happening
A4: Tie into st. interest. Let them choose the topic, theme, format, etc.
How about EdCamp Class? An elective where Ss teach each other?
If we expect it. Ss will rise. If they rise, Ts will have to. Raise our expectations of the profession.
No place you'd rather be, right Zac? ~ARL
A4: I also ensure that my lessons are differentiated by combinaion of content, process and product
A5v1 this may sound crazy but I've been teaching them and they are responding in amazing ways
sharing artistic abilities of amazing people across the world!
Tell them one of your experiences! If they don't have their own context, let them borrow yours!
I do what I can.. Just helpful and supportive like that..
