A1. Schools can honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by reinforcing character education and celebrating the diversity of their students. Each day we can recognize the importance others and model that Everyone Matters. We Are One! #COLchat#otherpeoplematter
A1. We can honor MLK by displaying, teaching, & modeling kindness, equality, & helping & standing by each other not only on 1 calendar day in his honor, but everyday of our lives. #COLchat

A1: Outside of reading his beautifully written speeches and watching documentaries, I think it's important to have open conversations about what he and African Americans were fighting for and if they see similarities today #COLchat@JMcCarthyEdS#EDU5720

Hello from NYC, this is #MoveThisWorld! 👋👋We're a #SEL program for K-12 schools. We help students and teachers identify & manage their emotions! #colchat
A1: I think the best way to honor his legacy is to not just educate about him but allow Ss to engage in activities to promote kindness, understanding, and acceptance of others #COLchat
Hi @heARTISTatWORK! Thanks for joining us for #COLchat tonight!
I here it's a bit chilly in Florida this week. We're sitting at 3 degrees, right now, in SE MI.
A2. For each age level we teach there are ways to discuss what ideas Dr. King had and what barriers he worked to break. Age appropriately, we can discuss the ideas of the time and for older students we can begin to draw comparisons to other peacemakers such as Gandhi. #COLchat
Yes, students need to see how his ideas and journey connects to us today. They need to see how it connects to them….The work these leaders accomplished and the things we all need to continue. #COLchat
A1) We can recognize and appreciate the strides Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has made through literature and documentaries, while also recognizing through a class discussion changes may still need to be made. #colchat
A2: we need to creatively bring his context into their knowledge base. For example, How would it feel if only those with Snapchat on their phone could have free time or what would life be like if only people with sneakers on could talk to each other #COLchat
A1: Schools can best honor his legacy by simply having conversations with their students and continuing to teach his message! This is the perfect opportunity for us to model his message throughout the day! #colchat
A2. Teach them about his life, why he was a game changer. Teach them about the struggles he faced & how he made a choice to flow through no matter what. #COLchat
A2: Age-appropriate literature and simulations can provide powerful learning opportunities.
I still remember and think about an impactful simulation our teacher did in 7th grade math.
#COLchat
A2 (continued):
I don't remember all of the math we learned, but I remember how it felt to be treated differently because of the color of my eyes . . . and that was just for a brief segment of one class period.
#COLchat

A3. Leaders have the power to bring people together. Barriers can be broken without violence. Love can cast out hate.
Leaders inspire others to be leaders. #COLchat
A2: MLK was the right voice to carry our founder's message of the inalienable rights of all people. We should tell his story along with theirs. #COLchat
Wonderful ideas Aliza! #COLchat Many great writings that can be brought into the classroom, I remember using a poem for my former 7th grade class. We used it for figurative language and author's craft. Forget the exact poem ARGH. #COLchat
A2: To honor his legacy we could do an interactive activity that helps students develop an emotional connection to the historical events that built his legacy. This could be done simutanously while percticpating in the day of service. #COLchat#colchat
A3: we can learn to speak our authentic truth...from a place of goodness and the bettering of society rather than for our own personal benefit. #COLchat
A3. To do what is right, regardless if it's not the popular choice, if we know it's what's best. To treat everyone, all stakeholders, w/ respect. #colchat

A3 Lead by example an lead from your heart. MLK lead by example, and stayed true to what was in his heart. We need to do the same. #COLchat#teachbetter#MasteryChat

A4. I enjoy helping others, seeing their growth, and being a part of the team. Every one of us has strengths that make our team what it is. It is enjoyable to be able to motivate and do what you can to allow others to be the best they can be. #COLchat
Our Dr. Martin L King, Jr. page https://t.co/2YpUJlKcFb “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education." #COLchat
4A - I lead to help others - to provide support and encouragement, to share and motivate others to be their best, to not let their past control their future. #COLchat
A4. Part 2: There are many leaders who have inspired people throughout history. A few I see greatness and courage include, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Dalai Lama, Dr. Martin Luther, and Jesus. #COLchat
A4a: Leadership isn't anything I think about doing. Rather, it's a natural extension of my desire to be someone who offers solutions and backs it with sweat. #COLchat
A4. P1. I lead because I want to bring the best out of people. I enjoy seeing others get out of their comfort zone & bring joy to someone else. I enjoy being a blessing to others & bringing a smile to their face. #colchat
A4a: I lead to be an example to others that we can accomplish great things when we are united thru love and kindness
A4b: Mother Teresa is high on my list as well as Anne Frank. Naysayers and all they followed their truth. #COLchat
A4a: I lead to inspire and help others to do their best.
A4b: Without sounding like a cliche Catholic educator, I would say Jesus. He accepted those that were thrown away from society and taught others to love those different from them.
#COLchat@JMcCarthyEdS#EDU5720
A5. There are good leaders and bad leaders in all aspects of life. Some lead for power and self gain, others lead for their people and a great cause. A hero, who may not even start off as a leader, always fights for a great cause, even in the face of uncertainty. #COLchat

A4b: Mother Teresa is high on my list as well as Anne Frank. Naysayers and all they followed their truth. #COLchat
A4. P2. I admire any leader that wasn't afraid to stand for what they believe, even if they were the only ones. The leaders that weren't afraid to stand alone, knowing they were benefiting others. #colchat
4B - There are so many - Jesus is one my inspirations and guide. Mother Theresa, Ghandi, anyone who was able to go beyond themselves for others. #COLChat
A4: When I was supt, I admit that I did not always know what would bring about success or always had the right answer or always the right goals or even right relationships. But I tried to always have the right values that were evident in my words and actions. #COLChat
4A: There are so many people that are walking in the same path I was on when I was a youth. Made many risky and destructive decisions, and I am grateful to be in the position I am in. I was given a second chance, so others can have an easier road.
4B: Jesus Christ.
#colchat
A5: Heroes do extraordinary things, often within extraordinary circumstances, situations, or events.
But heroes also do little things in extraordinary ways. #COLchat
A5: to some extent I feel they can be one in the same...but the slight difference I see is a hero provides a one time miraculous event where a leader works daily with the intent to make others help create a miraculous event together #colchat
A5: I would say that leaders try to change the world. Heroes don't necessarily seek to, yet do so by virtue of being the best version of themselves. #COLchat
A5 - a leader is doing the little things on a daily basis that help people while a hero does something extra-ordinary in a situation when it is most needed. #COLchat
4A: I lead others to push past norms. Change is can be scary and rarely comfortable, but without change we would never have room to grow.
Q4B: Albert Einstein, he grew very comfortable with criticism and it helped his ideas grow much like MLK
#colchat
A5: A hero and leader can inspire others to be better people, most definitely. A leader wants to bring out the best in others, to let them have success and the spotlight. #COLchat@JMcCarthyEdS#EDU5720
Yes, remembering that we need to love those who don’t agree with us and who at times may not even support us. Difficult to do, but much needed. #COLchat
A6. My favorite heroes today are Aquaman and Wonder Woman. I mean come on, they are some great leaders and heroes! We were allowed to pick super heroes right? #COLchat
A5: Heroes, many times, are people that can be perceived to be out of reach -- athletes, celebrities, historical figures. We can try, but may never reach their level. Leaders are similar, but at an attainable standard that we can aspire to be like. Approachable. #colchat
A6: Our men and women in uniform (including my oldest who is heading to Naval flight school when he graduates this May). God bless them for their service. #COLchat
A5: They are very similar. Leaders can be heroes, but not all heroes can be leaders. True leadership means continuing to stand for what you believe in & to represent what is right. #colchat
Thank you for joining us in #COLchat tonight. It’s been great learning with all of you. Enjoy the rest of the week and lead in any way that you can. We will see you for another #COLchat in two weeks on Monday, February 4th at 9pm EST.

A6 - For me someone like Terry Fox is a modern hero - doing something that was extra-ordinary because he saw a need and wanted to help others. #COLchat
A6: To me, a hero is anyone that puts themselves second to others needs. Military, nurses, doctors, police/fire. You have to take yourself out of the equation and only deal with the needs of others. #COLchat@JMcCarthyEdS#EDU5720
The lesson I learned late in my career from a concerned parent was to introduce Mlk’s teachings early and often during the year it simply the day before the three day weekend. #COLchat
#COLchat always seems to end too quickly! Thank you all for joining us tonight and for sharing your thoughts. It's always a pleasure to learn with the folks who show up for the chat.
A6. Right now, heroes for me are those that advocate for kids. Those that will never give up on a kid, despite the behaviors they may exhibit. Those that know they can change the life of a child when everyone else in that child's life has given up on them. #colchat
That's awesome Gary. Just because we lead does not mean we have the best answers or the right answers. We lead because in our hearts we know we have the purpose to serve others and bring about the best change that we can. #COLchat
A6: I think anyone that fights hate with love is a leader. Someone that is not afraid to step away from popular opinion and communicate what they know is right. #colchat#colchat
Thank you @WaltKozlowski@FbellomoB! This was my first time joining #colchat and the insight and coversation everyone shared was so refreshing. Thank you everyone!!
