Global #gtchat Powered by TAGT is a weekly chat on Twitter that takes place on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT and 5 p.m. PT in the U.S. For one hour, parents, educators, advocates and experts in the field of gifted and talented gather to share resources, links, authentic life experiences and insights about gifted issues.
Having worked in an inner city school with few supplies & equipment I found you can still do an exemplary job with what you have. I put the word out for help, wrote letters & made phone calls to get things. My Free & Inexpensive Supplies page https://t.co/OW6LtiW959#gtchat
Are you new to Twitter chats? We use the Q1) / A1) format. Please remember to use the #gtchat hashtag to participate in the conversation. This will make sure that other chat participants see your tweets.
Our first question is coming up; let’s get ready to chat! Please preface your responses with A1).
Excited to collaborate and share ideas about gifted education on a budget with you today! #gtchat
Hey Twitter people, we’ll be hosting a #SENGChat on January 30 at 8 pm EST! This will be similar to #gtchat and focused on the emotional needs of gifted individuals. Come join us!
A1) Although our state mandates gifted education, it is an unfunded mandate. This necessitates the local school district provided most of the funding. #gtchat
A1) Around $26,000 for each teacher salary comes from the state as G is SPED in KS. The rest from the district or individual school. I think, it is my 1st year in this district. #gtchat
Good to hear. I've heard many concerns about gifted policy from the national government in Canada from friends for years. Local support critical! #gtchat
A1 A mishmash. The state provides some small amount, though not enough to support the services my district offers. Districts that have even less resources than us end up with very skeletal services. #gtchat
A1) However, gifted education is included under the umbrella of special education which has given astute district administrators leeway to appropriate funding for gifted programs through these funds. #gtchat
We have pretty good local support. not great. Only good. There was a political change a few years ago them at pretty much killed activism and federal support. #gtchat
A2) When activities are substituted – designated – for gifted programming; ie, using Odyssey of the Mind as their gifted program (a regular in-school class); gifted students absolutely should not have to pay for these activities. #gtchat
A2 I don't think that is an easy question to answer as it requires a different approach depending on each school's unique situation. What other activities does the school pay for? What don't they pay for? Are sports pay to play or completely covered? So many variables! #gtchat
A2) Depends on if other groups are paying. If YZ special group doesn't pay, then GT shouldn't pay. I think it also depends if there are few G kids in their school and only intellectual peer group is during trip. #gtchat
A2) When activities provided to all students in a school by an outside organization such as the PTA funding field trips, gifted students should not be required to pay for these activities. #gtchat
A2: We are fortunate in our district to have an education foundation that we can apply to for money to cover the ‘extras’. We also have a supportive PTA and, for the most part, parents who are able to help cover extra expenses. #gtchat

A3) The role of state organizations is often couched in a ‘catch 22’ situation. States that fund gifted education have stronger state gifted organizations which in turn can have greater influence over state budgets. #gtchat
A3) Advocate for recognition as SPED - same amount of needs but, different than other end. Advocate for teacher training funding. Advocate for correct guidelines for provision/funding of services. #gtchat
A3) Most state organizations serve as advocates for funding. Larger organizations may have paid liaisons who work with state officials to secure funding. #gtchat
Sorry popping in late-busy night. Will try to be along for the ride. Lisa Aguilar SPED teacher from NM and working towards MA in Gifted Education #gtchat
A1 #gtchat pretty much non existent. It teach a mixed Gifted / SPED class just to be able to provide some kind of service. Every once in a while, a bone gets thrown our way, but nothing consistent, even with the passage is ESCA.
A4 Properly trained clusters in gen ed classrooms can be incredibly powerful. The key is to get them trained properly! You can do a lot with one gifted intervention specialist, but only when they are supported and used well! #gtchat
A4) Research says Acceleration. However, I still think they need a GT teacher or facilitator to have relationship with to prepare them for and when S/E things come up and to share opportunities to learn outside and after school. #gtchat

#gtchat A2. I'll answer this question with another question: if athletically gifted students get these activities paid for, why don't students with other types of giftedness get the same support?
#gtchat I don’t think gifted students should pay, just like students he receive remedial services donthave to pay. In the past, my school has charged a fee for enrichment for these types of learners. We have done away with the fee.

A5) Technology can ‘help’ with gifted education budgets, but tech cannot replace gifted programming as the sole source of education for gifted students. Even with gifted students, good tech is enhanced with qualified facilitators. #gtchat
A5) So much is available online for free or little cost. 6th grader could take college class from online school. However, he still needs frequent T check ins and an intellectual peer group. #gtchat

A5) Technology can fill both a personnel need and provide cost-effective measures in rural school districts that may not be able to hire highly-qualified educators for smaller populations of gifted students. #gtchat
A6) It was pointed out to me years ago by a school board member that the less time a student spends in school (K-12) the more the district saves in educating that individual. #gtchat
A5) The sky is the limit with Tech - responsive, current, etc. in deepening the learning for ALL - Ss, educators, and parents! More cost efficient and often - free! #gtchat
A6) Parents with gifted and 2e kids who have choice actively choose school districts with good programs. Any funding based on numbers of students at a school is increased. #gtchat
A6) Empowering students to achieve academic and personal goals will reap economic benefits to the local community when they become productive contributors and taxpayers to the local region. #gtchat

A6) Possibility of winning more awards= better reputation = high pay earners build expensive houses and invest in community so their kids can go there too = more tax money. #gtchat
A6 #gtchat if programming includes project based or problem based learning, schools may be able to benefit from contributions, donations or sponsorships from corporate or other community sources that would not normally partner in education.
Our next chat will be on Thursday January 18th at 8E/7C/6M/5P US and Friday 19th January at 2 PM NZDT/Noon AEDT/1AM UK. Our topic will be “Creating a Culture of Kindness for Gifted Kids” #gtchat
It is so important to address the money. Because even when people want to do a good thing emotionally or are fighting for fairness and inclusion, money is key for organizational decision-makers. #gtchat
