Q1) Where does funding come from for gifted education in your school/district? #gtchat
  • gtchatmod - Moderator Jan 11 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1) Although our state mandates gifted education, it is an unfunded mandate. This necessitates the local school district provided most of the funding. #gtchat
  • Kate_Arms Jan 11 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1) Our district has reasonable funding from the province. #gtchat
  • AnnaCalven Jan 11 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1) Around $26,000 for each teacher salary comes from the state as G is SPED in KS. The rest from the district or individual school. I think, it is my 1st year in this district. #gtchat

Good to hear. I've heard many concerns about gifted policy from the national government in Canada from friends for years. Local support critical! #gtchat
    In reply to @Kate_Arms
  • TechieTeachOtt Jan 11 @ 8:15 PM EST
A1 A mishmash. The state provides some small amount, though not enough to support the services my district offers. Districts that have even less resources than us end up with very skeletal services. #gtchat
  • gtchatmod - Moderator Jan 11 @ 8:16 PM EST
A1) However, gifted education is included under the umbrella of special education which has given astute district administrators leeway to appropriate funding for gifted programs through these funds. #gtchat
  • Kate_Arms Jan 11 @ 8:16 PM EST
We have pretty good local support. not great. Only good. There was a political change a few years ago them at pretty much killed activism and federal support. #gtchat

Q2) Should gifted students have to pay for extra activities (academic competitions, field trips, etc.)? #gtchat
  • TechieTeachOtt Jan 11 @ 8:20 PM EST
Yes it has. And being here in the thick of it has not been a walk in the park. Drastic changes to gifted services this school year! #gtchat
    In reply to @gtchatmod
  • gtchatmod - Moderator Jan 11 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2) When activities are substituted – designated – for gifted programming; ie, using Odyssey of the Mind as their gifted program (a regular in-school class); gifted students absolutely should not have to pay for these activities. #gtchat

  • TechieTeachOtt Jan 11 @ 8:22 PM EST
A2 I don't think that is an easy question to answer as it requires a different approach depending on each school's unique situation. What other activities does the school pay for? What don't they pay for? Are sports pay to play or completely covered? So many variables! #gtchat
  • Kate_Arms Jan 11 @ 8:22 PM EST
A2) No. That said, I would rather see activities that need fundraising to include people who can't pay than schools not doing things at all. #gtchat
  • jofrei Jan 11 @ 8:22 PM EST
A2) It depends what the extra activities are and whether it is something that the school could/should be expected to provide #gtchat
  • AnnaCalven Jan 11 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2) Depends on if other groups are paying. If YZ special group doesn't pay, then GT shouldn't pay. I think it also depends if there are few G kids in their school and only intellectual peer group is during trip. #gtchat
  • gtchatmod - Moderator Jan 11 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2) When activities provided to all students in a school by an outside organization such as the PTA funding field trips, gifted students should not be required to pay for these activities. #gtchat

      In reply to @gtchatmod
  • GarrBeth Jan 11 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2: We are fortunate in our district to have an education foundation that we can apply to for money to cover the ‘extras’. We also have a supportive PTA and, for the most part, parents who are able to help cover extra expenses. #gtchat
  • gtchatmod - Moderator Jan 11 @ 8:24 PM EST

  • gtchatmod - Moderator Jan 11 @ 8:28 PM EST
Our PTA would only cover expenses if all students were included. :( #gtchat
    In reply to @GarrBeth
  • gtchatmod - Moderator Jan 11 @ 8:28 PM EST
A3) The role of state organizations is often couched in a ‘catch 22’ situation. States that fund gifted education have stronger state gifted organizations which in turn can have greater influence over state budgets. #gtchat
