Q1/A1 format for tonight's chat.
Get ready for an hour of engaged learning and great conversation as we #CelebrateMonday with our colleagues.
Good evening! Chris, HS Assistant Principal, Long Island! Excited to take part in tonight’s discussion and support my old #smithtown colleagues @danieldmccabe & @Matt_Furey1#nyedchat
A1 The principal at my school runs a student leadership club. They meet in her office during lunch. It’s sort of like student council except without the popularity contest of elections; anyone who’s interested in improving our school can join.
#NYedchat
A1 Principals who use their platform to connect and be inclusive of all students reap the rewards of a thriving, positive culture. It’s about modeling. #NYedchat
A1: Principals should greet students daily, get to know kids on a personal level, eat lunch with students, really get to know students on a personal level #NYedchat
Q1 When my Ss we’re planning their #geniushour projects, they made appts to meet with the principal to discuss their ideas. This made them feel valued as learners and as members of the school community. #NYEDChat
A1: Principals should greet students daily, get to know kids on a personal level, eat lunch with students, really get to know students on a personal level #NYedchat
A1: My principal colleague... @charissacole, does a phenomenal job of making positive phone calls home. Those calls mean so much to the kids AND the parents! #NYedchat
A1 Must be purposeful and intentional about communicating. Use every means possible. Conversations, social media, speeches at concerts And other public events, face-to-face handshakes #NYEDChat
A1 I think one of the most important things a principal can do is build relationships with everyone in the building. Setting the tone for an awesome, positive school culture. #NYEDChat
A1: My principal uses her office to have kids make weekly positive phone calls home. She has lunch with students as a PBIS reward. She makes morning announcements that always include a positive thought and/or reminder for the day. #PrincipalsinAction#NYEDChat
Being visible, accessible and approachable. Actually took the opportunity to cover two classes today. Had a great time being a reading role model with Ss #NYEDChat
A1 Kids know when principals care. Talk to them every chance you get. Friday morning, I visited a classroom that was working on writing. I had writing to do. Ended up kids taught me a game they learned earlier that week. Powerful impact #NYedchat
This may be most important. You must be more than a face up on the hill. The students have to know you, know your personality, and know your smile.
#NyedChat
A1 ~ Meeting with Ss to discuss the implementation of technology (and seeking the support of Ss w/ Ts :)! Lunch with the principal ~ Ss discuss current issues. Meet with S gov’t representatives to develop ways empower Ss. #nyedchat
A1: Students should view the principal’s office as a place where they can go for help and support with anything they need—including projects, clubs, fundraisers, service projects, etc. Along with social/emotional support for personal issues. #nyedchat
Those good news calls go along way, and selfishly, it’s a joy for me to be able to call a family whose student normally only gets calls for disciplinary reasons. #NYEDChat
Yes, AND the principal needs to go into student spaces, participate alongside them, ask questions, and show empathy so the students trust them enough to approach them. #NYedchat
A2: I haven’t used them yet, but I just heard about Doctopus & Goobric #Google add ons to streamline S writing and T scoring/feedback. Anyone use them? #NYedchat
A1 It's wonderful that we have a totally different model for principal these days. Hopefully, gone are the days where the principal is feared. Need #differencemakers. #NYEDCHat
A2 Google forms can be used to collect information about the capacities, interests, projects, learning needs of teachers. @Quizlet Live would be a playful way to assess teachers’ knowledge of basic procedures, like how to input attendance.
#NYedchat
A2: We have used @instagram and obviously @Twitter to build the story of our school. @j_cameronjr and I have collaborated to survey parents via Microsoft Forms. Easy way to get info on meaningful topics #NYedchat
A1 The principal’s “office” is a place that students can go to propose ideas for problem based, authentic opportunities that benefit the school environment with support. It’s having students trust to take a chance. #NYEDChat
A2 Getting my groove on using a pivot table in conjunction with Google Sheets helped me streamline some recent data management in less than 1/4 of the time it use to take. #NYedchat
#NYedchat Simplest concept in the world actually. Bus monitor writes bus #s on a chart in order of the line. Sends out a picture of her chart via @Remind
#nyedchat A2 when I was a principal, I loved using Google Classroom (called it the Principal's Office) to post shout outs, inspiration, job ads (I always needed help with something) and surveys for students.
I think Dan populates a Google form but I couldn’t get that to work because of glitchy Wi-Fi out by buses. The picture of the handwritten chart works great #NYedchat
A2: @BerkshireEagles Uses a “hub.” Esentially a #hyperdoc for staff to locate relevent school documents and procedural information (announcements, school forms, PD docs, etc) #NYedchat
Google docs have proven to be a game-changer for communication efficiency. We've streamlined our Moving Up Ceremony, team meetings, and Learning Support meetings. #NYEDChat
A2: I really like using @Bitly links in letters/memos/emails to all school stakeholders. It is an easy way to share shared documents/PDFs and then be able to track how many people have viewed your message—so you can see if you need to follow up. #nyedchat
I like using Google Classroom, Remind and Twitter to share information with students and parents too. I also like how Twitter can let parents “see” into my classroom. #NYEDChat
A2: @BerkshireEagles Uses a “hub.” Esentially a #hyperdoc for staff to locate relevent school documents and procedural information (announcements, school forms, PD docs, etc) #NYedchat
A2: We use shared google docs to track data cycles, nominate student's of the month, etc. We also started using google classroom. My principal posts our staff weekly news on her school/principal blog. Great way to keep us all on the same page. #NYedchat
A2- I love using @Office365#OneNote to take notes and share details of committees and shared decision making committees. Helps keep lines of communication open and transparent #NYEDChat
We have a great hangout lined up for tomorrow with the incredible @CristinaZenato @ 11am eastern!!! She'll be sharing some of her work with sharks as well as cave diving with students. Any classroom can watch live here:
https://t.co/SSlwBKcIbx
A3 Rather than having the principal shape school culture through social media, how about turning those accounts over to teachers so we can tell our own stories about what matters in our classrooms and to our students?
#NYedchat
A2 We take meeting agendas for a committee and make it one Google doc so you don’t constantly have to search for old notes. Just scroll down to look at archives. #NYedchat
A3 Is everyone recognizing accomplishments on #CelebrateMonday? We are proud that #NYEDChat celebrates Monday every two weeks. Bring your school into the Twitter world each Monday to showcase the success stories.
A3: Our principal uses her weekly principal blog to inform us of important dates and school happenings. She also includes links we can go on to further our own professional development. She encouraged us to join twitter with her this year to build our own PLN. #NYEDChat
A3- I’m actually a huge fan and getting feedback, input and feedback from staff using Microsoft Forms. Safe space for people to be honest and then bring the info back to them to digest, interpret, analyze and determine next steps. #NYEDChat
#NYEDChat all of my meetings and notes are live on google docs. I share with staff. Even at a conference. Many staff will comment live with questions when I am at an off site meeting. Great tool.
I’ve also found using Google sheets to combining all building schedules to be useful and a way to streamline. All schedules and important test/meeting dates have their own tab #NYEdChat
A2: @BerkshireEagles Uses a “hub.” Esentially a #hyperdoc for staff to locate relevent school documents and procedural information (announcements, school forms, PD docs, etc) #NYedchat
A3 Using media to share all the wonder things being done by the students and teachers in school makes the school community feel like a family. #NYEDChat
A2 Tech allows us to put out everything that we are about. Teachers, parents, students working together, projects, activities. Etc. Through social media, we are able to highlight aspects of our culture we want to grow.
A3 as a parent of 2 in the district I work in, I love following the goings on in their day and try to give parents of my ss the same opportunity #nyedchat
As the AP in charge of student conduct it makes me glad to say i get to do a lot of problem solving and helping students outside of “discipline” quite often. Feels good knowing students come to my office when they need some help. #nyedchat
A3 Rather than having the principal shape school culture through social media, how about turning those accounts over to teachers so we can tell our own stories about what matters in our classrooms and to our students?
#NYedchat
A3 Many of our teachers share what our Ss are doing in the classroom on Insta and Twitter. Music, clubs and sports also get features. Principals repost on the school accounts. #NYEDchat
Q3: Sharing videos of Ss daily moments like morning arrival, spirit wear, classroom activities, etc. fosters a sense of community and transparency in & around a school 👍🏼 @danieldmccabe#NYedchat
Parents are busy people who care about their kids' education. It's important to show what meaningful engagement looks like. We can use social media to build school culture from the inside out and from the outside in too. #nyedchat
#nyedchat A3 I am trying to use video to do a weekly teacher feature or interviews with our athletic coaches/club sponsors to place on website/social media for all to see. In Indiana, we are competing for Ss to our districts.
I have encouraged Ts to take advantage of all that twitter has to offer. For PD, promoting our school, and making connections with others it is a great venue. Proud of Ts who were reluctant at first but are now twitter stars! #nyedchat@MarkFul08863126@mashby71#AHSteach

A4 Best PD I’ve seen is teacher-created. Principals can support teacher-created PD by marshaling resources, giving over faculty meetings for professional learning, and asking questions to show curiosity and a willingness to learn themselves.
#NYedchat
A4. I have tried very hard to make the office a place for coaching. A place for collaborations. A place where ideas can be exchanged, discussed and created. #nyedchat
A4 When kids have cool ideas @JMWiener and I enjoy organizing forums for them to work them out and discuss important things — love spending this time w kids #NYEDChat
A4: This picture hangs in my offfice. The caption says: “What are YOU rising above?” I use this to talk to students about overcoming adversity, staying out of drama, etc. #NYedchat
A4 ~ Constantly engaging in Ss in conversations about their choices, implementing restorative practices for discipline. Engaging Ts in convos about best practices to improve student learning & understanding! #NYedchat
A4 Honest conversations about learning and teaching. Promote an environment in which "gotcha" is gone and growth and experimentation are of great value. Conversations and actions must focus on growth.
A4- best thing I did this year was install a TV as mirror of one of cpu monitors. Ts, Ss and Ps all sit with me to collaborate for improvement and progress. #NYEDChat
A3: Last year I created a “rolling slide show” on a 65 inch TV in our lobby on #GoogleSlides Here we played important announcements, and displayed all flyers posted in the building. #nyedchat
A4 Honest conversations about learning and teaching. Promote an environment in which "gotcha" is gone and growth and experimentation are of great value. Conversations and actions must focus on growth.
A5. Canceled midyear and final exams last year. Year #2 without at present. All stakeholders benefited from this principal initiative. More time with students and less with forced assessments. #NYedchat
Q4 I’ve been very lucky to be able to meet with my principal to bounce ideas off of him when I’m trying something new for my Ss. It’s wonderful to have admin who are very supportive and help lend a hand when I’m tackling new and challenging projects. #NYEDChat
Great example of the at-home conversation that begins with, "What did you do at school today?" When our kids respond with "Nothing", parents can "ask the Principal". It's photos like these that get the conversation started! #nyedchat
A4 Never had one of my ten principals (NYC) ever take the chalk from me and teach a class or model their expectations. Did have 1 forward looking Superintendent who thanked me for allowing him to teach again. #NYedchat
Yes this Matt is where the difference comes in. Gotcha-old school/conversations about teaching & learning with purpose and all stakeholders involved sets the tone for #positive environment. #NYEDCHat
A5 I see my role as a principal in the discipline dynamic as that of a parent. My parents were firm and consistent but I always knew they loved me #NYEDChat
A5: Change the view! Make the office a place of learning and positivity. My office can’t only be a place where negative conversations occur. My students love coming down because it is a welcoming place for them #NYedchat
#NyedChat Do not focus for too long on the negative action when discipline issues arise. What was done is nowhere near as important as why it was done, and how to improve actions and thought process in the future.
A5 Shift the perception so that the principal’s office is where risk-taking and innovation begins. Be the model. Start a revolution that thwarts the ordinary. Be proud to be awesome. #nyedchat
A4: I have seen my principal use her office on several occasions to provide 1:1 academic support and/or social/emotional support. She takes the time to address individual Ss needs and makes sure they know that they matter everyday! @diane_mackinnon#NYEDChat
A5 Principal's office needs to be arranged for all types of activities like a classroom with everything movable. It should be a learning center with materials for students, teachers & parents. #nyedchat
A5- being a listener and hearing all sides. Compassion and empathy to the situation. Understanding that Ss make mistakes and it’s ok and expected. Being proactive and not reactive. #NYEDChat
A5 ~ Always keep the focus of discipline on student learning and development as an individual! Sometimes consequences have to be issued, but the discussion should be focused on better decision making moving forward! #NYedchat
A5 Principals can use restorative instead of punitive practices. They can analyze helpful behaviors rather only preventing harm. They can interrogate school systems for bias. And they can help students explore and enact their own values at school.
#NYedchat
A5 Shift the perception so that the principal’s office is where risk-taking and innovation begins. Be the model. Start a revolution that thwarts the ordinary. Be proud to be awesome. #nyedchat
Let's eliminate the words: "fail" and "failure" from our teaching vocabulary.I feel that @TG_Neil is correct about
not using the term "fail" or "failure." My Learning from Mistakes page https://t.co/Pp3FEDefAf#NYedchat
A5 we are trying to build a social emotional program that will systematically deal with most issues. Hopefully, we will be able to deal with most issues at the root and collaboratively. #nyedchat
A5: Clear & consistent disciplinary practices/expectations throughout the school lessens disciplinary incidents & opens the Principals’ time to other areas #NYedchat
A5 - Always remember that we all make growth with a few steps forward and then a step back. When a student you work with often takes a step back. Help them correct that, but don't forget to mention all the steps forward an S has made. #NYedchat
This right here, people.
If we are truly leading learning organizations, why would the Principal's Office be excluded from playing a vital role in this process? #NYEDChat
A5- being a listener and hearing all sides. Compassion and empathy to the situation. Understanding that Ss make mistakes and it’s ok and expected. Being proactive and not reactive. #NYEDChat
A5 Students need to understand that there are consequences with every choice they make. I want students to know that they are good people, can learn from mistakes, at the end of the day, need to own their choices. We can all grow with that mindset #NYedchat
Reflaction-so many wonderful ideas were passed around tonight on #NYEDChat. Big take away: Principals are difference makers who build relationship and provide many outlets to establish a positive environment for students to thrive in.
Too many to name! Saved many tweets tonight to refer back to. As usual #NYedchat was a wealth of information. Awesome having such a great network of educators to learn from!
A5: Celebrating growth when possible is key, esp. for Ss who are known by some as your “frequent flyers.” When leading reflections on actions/poor dec/choices w/Ss, I always try to point out challenges they’ve overcome. Then I state we’re on a “clean page” going fwd. #nyedchat
A5: Begin every student conversation (including those with discipline issues with “What are you learning?” “How can I help you in the classroom?” #NYedchat
A2: @BerkshireEagles Uses a “hub.” Esentially a #hyperdoc for staff to locate relevent school documents and procedural information (announcements, school forms, PD docs, etc) #NYedchat
Principals must use their super powers for the betterment of their students. We must continually model and defy complacency at all costs. Take risks so that others are encouraged to as well. #nyedchat
Reflaction: I really like some of the technical practices that were shared tonight. In addition to continuing to engage my colleagues on using #GoogleSheets, I would like to also implement the use of #hyperdocs#nyedchat
Reflaction: Just as admin behaviors & priorities trickle down to culture of the building, teacher behaviors & priorities do the same in the classroom. Make the most of every 40 minute window. #reflaction#NYedchat
A5: Our principal is very present in our building outside of her office. By being present with the Ss in the classroom and building relationships the Ss see her as not only their principal but someone they can turn to anywhere at anytime. #NYEDChat
