Debbie Thoreson, P of 3rd grader, T of English 3 & AP, Dewey High School #oklaed Most epic win would be when a total nonreader asked whether he could be a couple minutes late to his next class to finish a chapter of Code of Honor.
Todd Gragg - History Educator at Midwest City High School. #MDubLearns#MDPurpose#oklaed
My most epic win is when @TheMrsGragg married me. Epic win 1a) would be the 2016 World Series victory by my @Cubs (because my 38 years of fandom had so much to do with them winning lol)
Kim from Norman Public Schools, My most epic win? Not social media appropriate.. Jk... I did win first place in a school talent show once for playing the piano.. not sure what you were wanting. #oklaed
A1: Anything Trivia! Because I love the random facts I know, and it's the only time I get to use them. LOL! I also love Words with friends, and any sport (basketball, kickball, soccer, football) #oklaed#Tomboy
A1: Anything except Tic Tac Toe right now because my daughter will make the cat win every time! #oklaed But I also like board games because they make you think.
A1b) Also loving #DeadOfWinter and #MansionsOfMadness - these are somewhat complicated board games that will change the way you play board games...#Oklaed
A1 currently, lots of Zelda: BOTW.
It's been a great bonding experience with my son, allowed for deep convos about right and wrong, and the storyline and world is deep for exploration. I'm amazed what my kid has learned about physics & nature!
#Oklaed#Nintendo#dadlife
A1. My favorite game to play as of late was God of War for the PS4. Kratos is a fascinating character with a rich gaming history. Add a son and a great story set in the realm of the Norse gods with some of the best graphics I’ve seen in a while and you get awesomeness! #oklaed
Shane Sanders Administrator @OKCPS. I’ve been part of some tremendous State Championship teams, but In 2009, Our Faculty outlasted a high powered @Jarman_Rockets middle school basketball team inspite if my AIR BALLED Free throws 😂 #oklaed@Stv_Gilliland@JasonGalloway77
A2: I don't play many games because I'm busy reading or doing something. But when I do play lately, it's usually something my now-8 year old can play. #oklaed
A2: I’ll admit that I’m not the game player I was growing up and even then it was mostly sports games.
I do love a good board game and mostly bc competition is my #1 strengthsfinder trait. 😬 #oklaed
A2 - Depends on the game, word or card games on my phone/ipad are to pass time or relax. Trivia games to show my superior intellect (brutally honest egotistical answer there) and games with family and friends to enjoy their company. #oklaed
A2 - I love scrabble because I love words...There really is no way to not sound like a total dork here. What the meme requires creativity based on limited choices - it is a different kind of challenge. #OklaEd
A2 always for the storyline first. The opportunity to talk smack to your friends' faces is a close second. To be more attractive, third. But mostly to fill out plot diagrams and make comparisons of similar themes between genres too.
#Oklaed
RT benfelder_okc: 62% of students in Oklahoma qualify for free and reduced-price meals during the school year, but of those students, only about six percent were receiving meals as part of the Summer Food Service Program, per state dept of ed #oklaedhttps://t.co/MxdRalISYX vi…
A2. Sometimes it’s because they’re part of a long lasting series. Other times, it’s because you hear great reviews of a release like The Witcher was for me. #oklaed
A2: To make connections with the students I serve, also, to keep myself balanced so that I can be mentally strong throughout the school year. #oklaed#brainbreak#relationshipbuilding
I gotta get in on this one!
Most epic win is definitely landing Mandi Bridges as my wife. I outkicked my coverage on that one. I’m lucky every day and a winner every day. #oklaed
A2: because I like to win! ha! I like to challenge my brain to think. I don't like an easy game...I love to compete and push my body or brain to reach further. #oklaed
A1. Apples to Apples, Utter Nonsense, The Game of Things, Cards Against Humanity, etc. I love group games because I love being with and learning about my people #oklaed
A2b: Last week I played a new board game with my aunt and uncle. It was just fun to figure out new rules, see who could be both competitive and nice, and try to win. #oklaed
A1) i love the idea of hiding things in books that kids can read and it's a nice surprise. or having them have access to things when they complete activities. hidden coloring sheets are kinda fun. #oklaed
A3 - Gamification is taking content and Turing it into a game where students can explore, level up, and win/lose but keep going until they defeat the game. #OklaEd
A3: To me Gamification is: Integrating engaging games into your lessons to relate to your students and pique their interests. It's making learning relevant for your students and also a lot of FUN!! #oklaed
A3) I feel like I'm cheating on this one a little bit b/c @TeachFromHere explained this to me... using the elements of gaming for learning content in the classroom #oklaed
A3: My new definition comes from what I just read, which indicates that gamification is just adding a gaming element to any activity (like getting points for how much money you spend). It keeps people interested and involved in the process at hand. #oklaed
A3: but it's ALSO the important things like creating critical thinking skills in your students, allowing them to work together as a team. PLAY is our brain's favorite way of learning so WHY do we not let them play more? #oklaed
Utilize those elements that draw you to your games - then using those elements in non-game situations.
Starbucks and their gold stars. Capital One and their airline miles.
#oklaed
A3. Using gaming techniques for edutainment and engagement!? This is a new topic for me, so excited to learn! (@mrjoshflores Add your Teacher Character Skills Graphic to Level Up my Answer, please? GOAL: Find a PD partner who will Level you Up and Give You XP⚡️!) #OKLAED
A3: Correlation of key gaming elements like tasks to complete, or scoring into lessons to increase student engagement. Can be enhanced with use of technology #oklaed 👌🏾
A3 using Nintendo's kishōtenketsu level design philosophy for your lesson designs. And then throwing barrels at kids. They better learn to stay engaged and JUMP!

We have to remember that it's okay to use Tech to play games in our classrooms (Plickers, Kahoot, etc), but also you can't go wrong with a deck of cards, dominoes, and board games... #oklaed Just think outside the box. My students LOVE Plickers!!! #oklaed
A2: I really don't play many games. Mostly because of lack of time and also because I am VERY competitive. I hate to lose and really struggle to play "just for fun".#oklaed
A4- I’ve never thought about it before, but I could totally teach rhetorical analysis in AP Lang w/integrating a game like What the Meme into my classroom. In fact, this could be a blast! 🤔🤔💃🏼💃🏼#OklaEd
A4: Taking the principles of gaming: an objective, specific rules, reward systems, and rapid feedback cycles (Thank you, Buckley & Doyle 2014 and Haselwood!) to engage students and increase student learning. #oklaed
A4: I use Apples to Apples to teach argument skills and types of persuasion. Man Bites Dog helps students see how to make effective titles. Mafia can be used to show how rumors spread and cause damage. #oklaed
A4. The collaborative engagement, competition, and the joy. But then again, my kids are pretty adept at turning everything into a game #ThePowerofPlay#oklaed
No problem! Vicki you can search in the search window #oklaed and the whole chat will come up. OR just follow @TeachFromHere because he is the chat host tonight. We are discussing Gamification in the classroom. Great topic! Jump in! Just remember to use the #oklaed
So what are we discussing tonight? i'm new to all of this and would like some instruction please. i've had twitter for a long time just truly don't understand how to use it fully. V
A4 - I think scrabble is a little bit harder but I have used some elements of Clue in the weeklong Cold War era spy game activity I have done with US and World History classes. Students have to study documents then find them in the school by cracking codes. #oklaed
Because so many of these games are set in other countries, realms, etc, a director could find music of a particular region and have the students work on it. #oklaed

A3) gamification to me makes things fun for the kids. so many kids that i've taught think school technology is boring and games are fun. so i try to teach them that learning can be done through games and it's really good for practicing and learning new skills. #oklaed
A3: I would say gamification is providing content to students in a fun, engaging way that allows them to fail in a safe environment. It also feels less like "learning" the old fashioned way and more like students are used to now. #oklaed
A4b important to pay attention to your Ss favorite games. Fort Nite was this years fidget spinners, but it was nice to know what was going on with that game to be able to relate to Ss, or at least mention it and blow their minds. #oklaed#old#Igame
A4: I have my students create word searches w/their vocab/spelling words. I have students create trivia questions regarding their region of study. We jump rope our spelling words for activity. We 4 square our words, math facts. We go to the ABL lab for review. #oklaed
Q4) Good question... Munchkin you collect things you need to get stronger and move up levels. I like the level idea. Complete grammar goals? Level up! Complete parts of a story goals? Level up! #oklaed
A5 Being flexible in your curriculum. Allow Ss the choice to learn as they see fit. Give them the objectives and let go. Provide assistance and guidance as needed. It may be scary, but it could also be amazing! #oklaed
A5.That is our entire life in K. I give them 2-3 choices that I'm OK with in practically everything (lining up, goNoodle champ, music during work time). Sometimes it's a class vote, sometimes it's a personal choice #oklaed
I think choice comes easily with PBL which I implemented in my classroom this year. Students got to choose their topics, books, and how they showed mastery of certain standards. #thereisnotonerightanswer#OklaEd
A5) I like the approach of choice boards with students. Ss can choose which learning activities they engage in, while still engaging in necessary content #oklaed
A5 - I am allowing choice in what my APUSH Ss read over the summer. I am giving choice for my Macroecon Ss in them making podcasts over content next year, and giving my World History Ss choice in their inquiry based projects each unit next year. #oklaed
A5: I've tried providing more options in they type of assignment and even the specific readings that students use, plus they select their own research project. #oklaed
A5.That is our entire life in K. I give them 2-3 choices that I'm OK with in practically everything (lining up, goNoodle champ, music during work time). Sometimes it's a class vote, sometimes it's a personal choice #oklaed
I recently read (@MrazKristine) that for every thing you ask a student to do/complete, you should be giving two choice opportunities for the student... good rule of thumb when thinking about choice #oklaed
You can give too many options. When first stepping into this, there should only be 2-3. As students and teacher get comfortable, the choices can be increased. #Oklaed
#OklaEd A5: Intriguing to me because I personally believe many students think choices need to be made (Ts will tell them what to do, no choices needed). Important reason for gaming, let alone other reasons. S’s choices necessary to optimizing their Effective Learning!!!
A6 - I think this goes back to choice - if you are constantly allowing Ss to decide how they learn content/how they show mastery then you are always allowing for side quests, right? Maybe I don’t fully understand, because duck hunt...😂😂🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ #OklaEd
A6 - I think one way to do this at the secondary level is to incorporate my genius hour/20% time type options. Then let the choice be the side quest. #oklaed
You are on the right path! It is entirely possible to learn what needs to be learned AND not go through every single specific lesson word.for.word.
#Oklaed
A6: Students could do research on certain pieces of music that they are currently working on or research lyrics from poems, etc for extra credit. #oklaed
A6 In science give real world examples, then work backwards to to the point of the main objective being covered. Helps to relate it to something real and may lead to more side quest(ion)s #oklaed
A6: I had to google 'sidequest'... Is that like side chick? Anyway, I took it as the unintended recipient of the initial goal? Anyway.... I can't answer this until I know what this word even means. .. If we are not gamers this word is foreign. #oklaed
#OklaEd Just came to mind scenarios set up for Ss (e.g., survived a plane crash). Ss had to choose items from plane before it burned up to survive and say why they chose them —> improve problem solving planning.
A5: I resolve to be better about this next year. I have to give students more opportunities to show me what they know in non-traditional ways of their choosing. #oklaed
A4) i think bringing in problem solving skills of the games i love into the classroom i also love playing the games with kids. finding new ones and challenging each other. i am super big on competition. there is a reason my kids always get known as the little CEOS. #oklaed
Side Quest - A different way to learn about the main story. In other words, its possible to meet all of the learning goals, but going through a different path. #oklaed
A7 - Perks could be moving on from a lesson b/c mastery has already been demonstrated - Do all students really need to be working on the same skill at the same time? #OklaEd
A7 Free time, extra hall passes, no homework, free help on test questions, etc. The possibilities seem endless. Ss love perks in a classroom, no matter how big or small. #oklaed
A7: The simplest things motivate Kinders: a fruit snack, pretzels and cheesy poofs, being first in line, bragging rights for beating the teacher, getting to pick the brain break.Does that change as they get older? #oklaed
A7 - This last year with my AP World Ss I had several Thesis Throwdown Thursdays. Students would compete in a bracket style tournament to determine the best thesis of the class. Winner got a free reading quiz certificate #oklaed
Oh my apologies I was so far off... Well, in that case Sidequests are my favorite. I love when I have a lesson totally planned out yet a question or an instance takes us down a whole other path and it turns out amazing. #oklaed I welcome Side Quests.
A7 Free time, extra hall passes, no homework, free help on test questions, etc. The possibilities seem endless. Ss love perks in a classroom, no matter how big or small. #oklaed
A5) i think, using technology, and different games or programs that do the same thing but in different ways can help kids find something that's suited best for them. provide choice whenever you can in where they can do their work, how they can, and when they can do it. #oklaed
A6) sidequests are awesome. you don't always have to be DOING something. it's about progress not product. if your kids are getting practice and having fun and just learning how to INTERACT with other humans and cooperate then they're learning. #oklaed
A6 Sidequests: bring in a non-fiction article and connect its themes with the novel we're reading, show me a hilarious YouTube video, let me borrow your video games, read an extra book, let me use your writing as an example of what excellent student writing looks like
#Oklaed
Most of that remains into HS. The easiest way to get any manual labor done around my school is to say, "I need a volunteer..." Hands begin popping up all over the room. Suddenly all of those copy paper boxes make it into the workroom. #oklaed
A8 - I think incorporating this would be leveling up the gamification in my classroom. I could do a badge for each unit, especially could use badges in my non-AP classes as I am moving to a more standards based approach. #oklaed
Most of that remains into HS. The easiest way to get any manual labor done around my school is to say, "I need a volunteer..." Hands begin popping up all over the room. Suddenly all of those copy paper boxes make it into the workroom. #oklaed
A8 - Badges: Mastery of essential standards, punctuality, attendance, perseverance, collaboration...I’m sure I will think of more after sending this tweet. #OklaEd
A7: If we are going to use badges (rewards) it's important to find a reason to award every student a badge. I'm sorry. Yell at me if you will. but some students could go all year an not be recognized for anything in your reward system. I challenge you to re-evaluate #oklaed
A8 the best part about badges is they can be customized for an individual student's strength that might not be in standards or rubrics or "I can" statements. They happen and you, your PLC team, or that outside consultant your district hired will not have predicted it.
#Oklaed
This is where you get to be creative - all of your students will do something really cool. Give a badge for that and let them have it on their desk!
#oklaed
A7) i give my students tasks or projects to complete and once they complete those they can have some 'free time' to do the things they want to do. if they've worked hard then they deserve some time to chose activities that i have approved of but are their choice #oklaed
A8: Ok. I learned about these at a conference this summer and I’m SUPER excited to use them this year. I love the idea of making learning pathways clear to students. #oklaed
A8) #oklaed In Munchkin you earn levels, so that could be the badges. Also, you can earn gear by using your cards properly. I can "award" gear to students who meet "easy" goals.
A9: It's up to us as the teachers to hone in on their talents/skills and allow opportunities for them to shine in the classroom and beyond. If they never had the opp, that's on us. We need to allow them to WIN! each of them have skills! Notice the talents. #oklaed
A9 - I think celebrating academic wins becomes more meaningful when you have made a habit of celebrating the out of class wins. Getting a driver's license, getting a date to the prom, getting into the varsity game, making a role in the play, getting a job #oklaed
I've held Munchkin in my hand a couple of times but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Santa delivers a couple of really cool board games every year at Christmas.
#Oklaed
A9: It honestly depends on the win, IMO. When our bandies won Sweepstakes, they had the opportunity to get Sweepstakes rings. If the students had a great performance, I would buy pizza. Of course, I’m open to everything in between! #oklaed
A8) make it rain badges and stickers and belts and levels and all sorts of ways to track progress! kids love earning things. it's an amazing way to get them involved in their learning. #formativeassessment#oklaed
A9 Leveling up their grade after a long battle. At the end of this year, a S earned their highest grade on a test after I had pushed & pushed & pushed them to study, study, study. The XP gained was enough to push them to their highest grade of the year #oklaed
Side quests can also be relatively unrelated to the main quest. Maybe in discussing some aspect of OK history, your students get interested in pinto horses or grasslands or earthquakes. The side quest could be a little side project following their questions. #oklaed
A9- I think an epic win depends on each individual student, but I think there should be constant celebration of growth, grit, and perseverance. Crazy thought - Maybe we even need to celebrate failure as a first step to growth. #OklaEd
Amazing!! So when I would walk by his desk I would say please not right now but WoW that is so amazing. Please finish that as soon as you finish your math. I can't wait to see that when you finish. He would go home and tell his mom my comments. #oklaed
A9) any time he students can bring new knowledge to the class, that deserves celebration. Understanding what the teacher says is great, but going out and bringing new stuff back, leading is awesome. #oklaed
A9: Next year I’m all about celebrating personal growth. When you get better, it’s time to celebrate! I’m hoping badges help me with this in a world of large class sizes. #oklaed
A8: There could be badges for All-State participants or Honor Choir participation. Badges for great singing or effort in class. The possibility is endless! #oklaed
