A1: I allow student voice & choice thru balanced assessment like essay, PBA video, MC test over a single unit. All covering the same objectives? I’ll take the higher 2/3. Ss get the practice in strengths & weaknesses, and I have the evidence/writing sample, etc. #formativechat
A1 allowing students to answer in multiple ways. I usually provide students with a choice board then let them take ownership to show what they know. #formativechathttps://t.co/YUF98IhkDE
A1. I love the idea of providing numerous assessments that lead to one common objective (through art, music, playwriting, or any creative outlet).
I would love to see real examples of how other educators utilize diverse ways to show student learning (please @ me)! #formativechat
A1 The last school I was at was amazing at giving students choice playlists for activities. Choose 2 from A or 3 b 1 a or 4 c and 1 a. It was awesome to ensure all students bought into the lesson and had rigor still with column A. #formativechat
Jim, HS Math checking in from Sao Paulo, Brazil. My favorite thing that happened to me over the weekend was spending time with my international family. #formativechat
A1 My students choose their writing topics. Here’s a protocol that helps them choose topics that matter to them, as opposed to topics that feel easy or comfortable, or are of only passing interest. #formativechat
A1: I like to do learning menus that have some "must dos" and some "choose me" for more tradition subjects. Whenever possible, I like big real life projects, ex: designing and making costumes for a play. Lots of choice and ownership #FormativeChat
#formativechat A1: I allow choice in project presentation - animation, website construction, play, song, etc. That's the big space I am working in atm. Hoping to eventually move that to summative assessments realm....
Hello I'm a grade 3/4 teacher from Alberta Canada. We enjoyed the new Wreck it Ralph movie with our kids this weekend and some family game nights.
#formativechat
A1: Encourage Ss to provide the evidence to demonstrate that they’ve mastered the learning objectives, ask them to write about topics they find important or meaningful, and employ their self-assessment in the overall assessment of their learning. #formativechat
I teach kinders so I @Seesaw is one of the easiest tools for them to use and for me to manage and share with parents. As they learn how to use all the features I let them share what they know any way they want. #formativechat
A1 I send them a google form with 2 q. the first that states what the standard is and asks them to grade themselves. They then support their grade with the second answer #formativechat
Paula Parent Ambassador from Ky. Fav Thanksgiving moment; my 15 yr old wrote a thank you to the dog and looked into his eyes and read it to him.#formativechat
A1: I’m a reading teacher, and I don’t censor what my Ss read. I allow Ss autonomy to drive what they read. They have a menu of how they may show me and their audience their take-always. #FormativeChat
A1-I am really struggling with this one this year. I co-teach 2 of my 3 courses and cannot find ways that we can give common assessments but give student choice at the same time. Looking for suggestions for 2nd semester. #formativechat
A1 I provide ss with a menu of learning activities daily. They choose the order that they complete them, the activities that they do complete, they can even decide if they want to come to a small group mini lesson or not. #formativechat
A1: Aside from the fact that my PBL almost always includes choice of content or product, I also have sidequests which are entirely student-choice driven #formativechat
A1 I offer students a choice menu. Actually a bunch of choice menus... Try to let them demonstrate a skill of their choice within the content framework of a given unit. #formativechat
A1: We just started addressing at our school (in math). Right now I provide choice for practice and demonstration of skills through stations. Ss choose which station(s) they want to work at and each one has different activities addressing same standards. #formativechat
A1: Even if a student hasn't written something down on an essay, I will give them the opportunity to clarify in person - face to face. If they can do that, I will invite them to make sure to write more clearly next time but also accept that they did understand it. #formativechat
After students have brainstormed questions , allow them to choose one question they would like to investigate and then make sure it’s part of science instruction #FormativeChat
We must be mindful that Ss may have preferences for demonstrating their learning that may be quite different from “traditional” products. The confident teacher is able to cede control of the classroom and place it in the capable hands of the Ss. #formativechat
I agree Adam... let the students show off a little bit. They may come up with ideas that we haven't even thought of. Let them go and enjoy the ride! (with a little guidance..lol) #formativechat
A1 I offer students a choice menu. Actually a bunch of choice menus... Try to let them demonstrate a skill of their choice within the content framework of a given unit. #formativechat
A1: I'm not in the classroom, however, I love pop quizzes during my training sessions and 5 questions at the end to solidify what we talked about. I also allow for teachers to ask questions as they explore which is really helpful for them.
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A1- With my littles it is also impt for me to start by teaching them to think about how they show what they know. They are still learning to think about their learning and it is a slow but worthwhile process! #formativechat
I heard that Brian was going to be here so I needed to tell everyone to buy 10 copies of each of his books for the holidays #bestbookwingmanever#FormativeChat
A1 our 10th gr ELA teacher is having students list fav books and tomorrow they’re doing paintings to express their impact. My 15 yr old is so excited to express his thoughts with a brush.#formativechat
A1 - Providing different sources of information like myself, peers, videos, text, audio. Provide different types of formative and summative assessment. Be flexible with time as well. #formativechat
A1: I mostly work with adult learners now and their end project is a demonstration of how I allow choice so my students can show their learning. #formativechat
A1: I often let Ss pick from several options to show learning. We use @Flipgrid or @Seesaw and I use choice boards for Ss to select from. Since we are a Montessori classroom we have lots of choice all day. Ss often ask can I do this instead.
#formativechat
A1: I lead self-paced math classes, allow students to show growth through choice board assignments, and have students set attainable goals for each unit
#formativechat
The divergent teacher definition seems to demand collaboration with others and new learning, so assessment continues the learning process not just "tests" what's already known. #formativechat
A1 My ELs are all at different stages of language acquisition. They show their learning through whatever means you they can. Some do it in writing while others record their responses. #formativechat
Welcome to #formativechat! Thank you for being here! I am Mandy Froehlich, Director of Innovation and Tech & author of the #firewithinbook and #DivergentEDU! Please intro yourself & tell us your fave thing that happened over the holiday weekend!
A1: Aside from the fact that my PBL almost always includes choice of content or product, I also have sidequests which are entirely student-choice driven #formativechat
A1 my classes can record, voiceover, type, draw, and whatever else they can think of to reflect on their learning #formativechat also we are having a robot dance contest this week. Demo through interpretive robot dances...
A1: Late but here! I had my Ss choose how to show their learning and then compile it on an @AdobeSpark Page so that it was all in one place. Spreadsheets, images, texts, etc. It was great! #formativechat
Absolutely! The products we used to create in class are not always relevant anymore. Who knows what type of products these kids will create for themselves to use in the "real world"? Why not let them explore in a safe place. It isn't about us, its about them. #formativechat
A1 #formativechat I like to challenge my students to "show what they know with media." As they create different types of media products, they develop the capacity to identify project types which best fit their content, goals & communication preferences. https://t.co/j4ocgY9Wto
A1 follow up - I saw this the other day in a post and going to try it out. Going to put a section at the end of my next assmnt labeled "What else do you know about this unit that you were not asked to show?" Let the Ss go to town. Maybe get a deeper insight. #formativechat
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A1: For each learning target (goal) I may provide a few suggestions for my Ss to show their learning but they can build upon that and find a method that best fits them. #formativechat#studentvoice
I couldn't agree more Nathan! We should continue to develop students in a "real world" type environment where they can develop life skills for success. Collaboration, critical thinking, etc! #formativechat
A2 Just go with it, ask Ss for ideas, get out of the way and see what they come up with, have conversations with them and learn from each other #formativechat
A Divergent teacher understands that failure and growth are not just terms applied towards Ss, but owns these terms for oneself, and reflects upon failure to strive towards growth. #FormativeChat#DivergentEDU
A2: We challenge assumptions when we build relationships where learning is the goal & students take risks. If we agree with Plutarch’s The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled,we have 2 allow personalization of both process & product #formativechat
#formativechat I'd expect "divergent teachers" would generally oppose cookie cutter, homogeneous student projects. Students are very different, so why should all their expressions of mastery & learning look the same?
Q2 is now up! How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of? #formativechat
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
HS Math. I have some ideas but they seem to be low on the DOK scale. Looking for deep thinking options that my Ss can really get into. I have projects and give slight choice within each but looking to expand. #formativechat
A2: A a T of anyone (children or adults), one must keep all assumptions in check and allow Ss to show thinking in new, exciting ways. That’s where the learning truly happens. #formativechat
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A2: Sometimes we might assume Ss want to be told what to do. Let’s challenge that by giving them a voice in the classroom! They can really surprise us sometimes with ideas 💡#formativechat
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A2 We can help students hack their assignments—that is, discover new ways to fulfill the assignment’s purpose that better serve the student’s own values. #formativechat
A2: I used to layout options for project ideas on a tic-tac-toe board and would leave the middle as “free choice”. Students would come with project ideas and my job was to not say no! #formativechat
A2: Ask students directly! We may be out of touch as to what ways students convey information in their daily lives - why not get advice from the students themselves? If we consult with students directly, they may be more inclined to put in their best efforts. #formativechat
A2 allow students an option to pick their own way to demonstrate their knowledge. By building relationships, you will know which requirements and how many check-ins that student will need.
#formativechat
Hey, #formativechat! Bethany Petty from MO popping in late! I teach HS & college Social Studies, and educational technology for pre-service teachers. I’m also an #edtech blogger & author of Illuminate: Technology Enhanced Learning. I loved my naps! https://t.co/mQfSMIvsIy
A2: Often we Ts get stuck in a way of thinking & can't always come up with new ways for Ss to show their learning. When we tap into S thinking, that's where the magic can happen. The problem can be retraining them to move away from the worksheet/MC test mindset. #formativechat
Always a great idea to model because for some people it's so hard to imagine! I used to do it in my pre-service Ts classes. Some were beside themselves with anxiety over being able to choose and not just being told what to do. #formativechat
Awesome thanks for sharing! I utilize something similar in our Algebra 1 classes. Often times these are after Ss achieve the intended learning goal and are presented more critical thinking extensions (sequels). #formativechat
A2: I’ve found that just “letting go” and giving them time to find their path to learning & success is most effective! It’s not MY classroom it’s OURS so why not find our paths together! #formativechat#DivergentEDU
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
Hello! Jumping in from Texas. I teach several subjects at a private school. Favorite part over the break: learning a few things about #Ducati#formativechat
A1-I love challenging students to come up with new ways to complete a project/presentation. Love when they ask "hey instead of this can I do this?". When that happens I just tell them to own it an I'll support them. #FormativeChat
#FormativeChat - As a math instr coach, I support Ts in this shift. There is more than one way to do a problem, but in math we tend to view mastery only in one way - the kid gets the math problem right. We need to open that up and expect deeper thinking than just right/wrong.
A2:First rule of assumptions is to get rid of them! Let the students learn and create freely. Without the option to take risks or innovate on their own, we are just creating students that can pass an assessment, not change the world. #formativechat
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A2 stop being a guide on the side or up at the front. Be a co-learner. Be part of their learning. Build with them. Have them ask questions and you ask back. Learning should be equal in the classroom. #FormativeChat
A2) I’m a huge #makered advocate! You never know what students will come up with when you give them the chance to explore in the #makerspace . #FormativeChat
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A2: I definitely love this resource from @froehlichm !
It reminds me that we are all learners. I think that having that humility is key to challenging our assumptions and considering what our students can bring to the table. #formativechat
A2: Perhaps a prevalent assumption is that student-generated assessment products may lack “academic rigor,” as if the only legitimate assessment strategy must come from the mind of a teacher. When encouraged, Ss can apply rigorous learning standards. #formativechat
A2- One of the exercises I've done in workshops lately are variations of the "__ and" or "____ but" scenarios where you suggest something outlandish and the other person replies with several ands or buts. I can see the beauty now in adding ands to everything. #formativechat
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A2 (2) adding and to the end of each statement helps you grow and think bigger. Combine that with my mantra "Will it matter in 10 years?" and you have a recipe for getting out of your own "This is how we've always done it" mentality. #formativechat
A2 structure activities for various levels. Once those levels are achieved turn the class over to the ss. how can we improve this? How can we show this concept in a different way? #formativechat
A1: I love offering my students choice for how they apply what they’ve learning through Show What You Know Bingo! Ss choose from a variety of products or can come up with their own way to demonstrate knowledge...they take more ownership in the product! #formativechat
A2: Let them talk, listen to what they have to say, and ask them for feedback and feedforward. Encourage, respect, and act on their voice and they will surprise you the more you let them. #formativechat
A2: One way is to try something with students that you haven't done before. Of course prepare for it, but definitely do it. Tell them it is mew and then talk through it, explaining your thinking. Students will interact and be grateful for it.
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A2 let students be part of the creation process of the learning activities. Have more open-ended activities for students to include their own interests and beliefs. (I am starting to sound like a broken record) #FormativeChat
A2: I used to layout options for project ideas on a tic-tac-toe board and would leave the middle as “free choice”. Students would come with project ideas and my job was to not say no! #formativechat
A2: I think assisting Ss in building capacity and independence, so they can discover ways that they learn best. Asking Ss how they want to show what they learned is a great first step. When they know you're open to suggestions they will come up with more ideas #formativechat
A2- My go-to here is to ask them. And I have several times. How do you think you can show me you know/understand this content/topic. Some Ss thrive on this but some struggle with the freedom. That's where I struggle. How do I give assistance but keep integrity? #formativechat
A2 - Need to keep in mind that if all our questions can be found on Google are we asking the right questions or providing rich learning opportunities. Need to challenge that just we learned / were assessed in a certain way also works for our students. #formativechat
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A2 say yes more often, leave some open-endedness in you directions that allows for creativity. This week I helped a student 3D print her “poster” on layers of the atmosphere #FormativeChat
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A2-By fostering a learning environment that promotes creativity and not just machines. Allowing Ss to dive into material and attack it in different ways.Breaking from tradition because "this is the way we have always done it" and being innovative and open minded. #formativechat
A2: I leave a “something else?” option on our choice boards/bingo cards that encourages students to think about what they would like to create instead of just what I offer them. #formativechat
Yes. I actually did a choice board once where all the work was from the year prior. They had to look at an exemplar and make a better exemplar from how it would help us that year #formativechat
A2: Staying connected, as an educator, is critical, in order to bring these challenging thoughts to the forefront and keep ourselves in a state of learning and growth. #FormativeChat#divergentEDU
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A1: I love offering my students choice for how they apply what they’ve learning through Show What You Know Bingo! Ss choose from a variety of products or can come up with their own way to demonstrate knowledge...they take more ownership in the product! #formativechat
#formativechat A2: taking classes for either CEUs or for grad school degrees. Participating in twitter chats like this one. it is pretty exciting to continue to employ a #GrowthMindset !
A2: The biggest challenge for me has been relinquishing control but it has been so worth it when I "get out of the way" and allow the Ss to be creative and think outside of the box. #formativechat
A1: I would give Ss opp to be creative in how they plated their food in culinary. Also, gave them opp to create their own dishes, presentations, and gave missions for them to demo learning in a variety of ways.#formativechat
Assumptions that the core of learning must be held and controlled by the teacher. When the learner possesses self-efficacy, there is an ownership that will outlast the effect of the teacher. #formativechat
That is awesome! As a HS math teacher I don't have that option but do provide extensions/sequels to our activities. I often have Ss working in multiple standards across many cognitive domains all in the same activity. #formativechat
Take a problem based approach - identify the problem then let them decide the approach to solve it. There is no perfect answer! We did this in solving accessibility issues in a school I taught at. #formativechat
A2 #formativechat 1 of the best ways to open up assessment options for students, & raise your own expectations of student demonstrations of mastery & skills, is to use rubrics which provide choice & afford flexibility to Ss. ID key topics or skills, but leave lots of open options
#formativechat here are screenshots of one menu for Intro Lego Robotics. Each entry has all the instructions and resources so I can guide kids as they work in small groups or individually.
A2: Here is an example of what I do: https://t.co/qXXXDgBgRQ …
I provide many options with varying difficulty and encourage outside the box thinking, so long as students can provide sound rationale and connect it to standards that we are hitting. #DivergentEDU#formativechat
To be fair, plenty of teacher-generated assignments lack academic rigor. The key for students or teachers is to be aware of the assignment’s purpose(s) and designing an assignment that fulfills that purpose. #formativechat
#formativechat -A2- Initially, it should be choices that we think of for them, but then ultimately, students should have the option to choose other paths to mastery. It takes modeling and scaffolding, but it will pay off with creativity in the long run.
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A1: for the current spanish unit and science unit, my two Ss will decide. They are quite artistic, so I suspect they will shine in thru their art. #formativechat
Q3 How can we assess student work if they are choosing to show their learning in different ways that we may not have planned for?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A2: Ss have so many more options to share their learning using technology which should be utilized to used to redefine their learning such as them creating a Digital Breakout or Google Map guided tour
#formativechat#studentcentered
Having meaningful discussions with your students can have a lasting impact. When they feel they have a voice in their learning, expectations will soar!
#formativechat
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
When my coteacher switched into my program a few years ago from a traditional classroom...that was what she said was always the hardest transition. She always follows up with though she feels like she teaches so much more now that she has given up that control. #formativechat
#formativechat#DivergentEDU I'm a big fan of professional reflection via blogging & podcasting. But having a peer teacher observe & then provide feedback, especially around instructional "stretch goals" we set for ourselves, is a strong strategy. @foliocollab helps us do that
A3: The assessment part should be less of a grade and more of an evaluation of understanding and working towards mastery. Are they on their way to getting it? #formativechat
I am doing something like that this year since Inam teaching a semester long course. Saved some examples and have tons of journals in @Seesaw to share with next semester, they rotate through choices in circuits, simple machines,&programming #FormativeChat
A2: let things flow, let their be brainstorming and discussion, don’t have an end product in mind but perhaps just criteria that it must meet #formativechat
Self-reflection through journaling, soliciting feedback from Ss and colleagues, and remaining connected allow us to confront our own biases. #FormativeChat#divergentEDU
Funny...most have been taught to be so explicit in their directions (to avoid confusion) that they usually create it and limit potential S growth. #formativechat
Love this! Divergent teachers learn with their students! Challenging their own assumptions that they need to be the ones leading all the time! #divergentedu#formativechat
A2 stop being a guide on the side or up at the front. Be a co-learner. Be part of their learning. Build with them. Have them ask questions and you ask back. Learning should be equal in the classroom. #FormativeChat
Yes! It's definitely a different form of teaching than the traditional model I was used to but I am still just as exhausted at the end of the day! But I love that the Ss are taking more ownership over their own learning! #formativechat
Hi all! Sorry I am super late! I held myself together pretty well this weekend, and sometimes you just gotta let the crabby out. Nothing that a chat won't fix though.. especially this one!! :)
#formativechat
A3-Look for understanding of LTs/Standards within the choice. If we are always measuring learning against these and not other students' work, then you are in the right and assessing appropriately. #formativechat
A3: While some depends upon what is being assessed, all can have simple criteria upon which they're based: Did what I create show what I know or just tell that I know stuff? Did it cover the standards/sections it needed to cover? And so forth. #formativechat
Q3 How can we assess student work if they are choosing to show their learning in different ways that we may not have planned for?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A3: The 1⃣ single-point rubric provides alot of flexibility to it. Making the learning goals visible and assuring that Ss understand "what it looks like" is key🔑 #formativechat
Leaving directions open ended challenges students so much when they are use to a more traditional do this then this then this. The process of getting students to respond to this takes some time and can be frustrating...but man when they figure it out its beautiful #formativechat
Q3 How can we assess student work if they are choosing to show their learning in different ways that we may not have planned for?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A3 We can be very clear about the skills we’re assessing, actively teach those skills, and accept that students have the freedom & flexibility to demonstrate those skills in a variety of ways. Let’s not make our rigidity a barrier to their creativity. #formativechat
A3: The learning standard is the key. If Ss can demonstrate mastery of the standard, then every student-generated product can be assessed against the standard. The teacher is guided by the learning standard and not by the assessment product. #formativechat
Gotta pick up my lil guy it was fun. Tonight I really needed tweet deck to keep up. That's how much on fire yall were today #formativechat#isteten@kisha4tech
A2: by not saying no. I tell my ss that they need to be safe and have a purpose for what they want to do. I love to hear their ideas, and they often come up with ones that I naven't before! But if we keep saying no, they will stlp trying to share their ideas #formativechat
A3: As teachers it is our job to adapt. If a student is excited or engaging in a way that we don’t anticipate, it is a learning moment for us (challenging our own assumptions)!
Maybe other students will want to express their learning in a similar way. #formativechat
a1 #formativechat Akin to different greetings at the door I'd like to work on choice cards. No english so we can focus on #LanguageLearning and increase student choice, especially for our littlies. Card for create, game, practice etc
#deafed#auslan
A3: The basic ability to show knowledge or mastery will remain. Think of the overarching goal or target and start from there. Does the student respond in ways or provide examples of hitting that target🎯#formativechat#DivergentEDU
Q3 How can we assess student work if they are choosing to show their learning in different ways that we may not have planned for?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A3-Ts tend to look at the product itself not the Ss understanding of the obj which is what we are really trying to assess. If you take in all input (body language, discussions, the products created, ALL of it we can get a true sense of mastery (clearly I'm SBgrades) #formativechat
Q3 How can we assess student work if they are choosing to show their learning in different ways that we may not have planned for?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A3: Co-create the criteria with your students. If they know the goal / learning objective, they can say how their product shows they have met it! #formativechat
A2 Give students autonomy in the classroom to direct their learning. Too often we as educators want to be the sole source of information yet there are so many valuable tools you can help direct students to engage, thereby making them lifelong learners. #formativechat
A3: I assess student work I can access & that reflects the rubric/grading requirements. Period. If a student successfully makes the case, I am open. Looking back, I have regrets where I couldn’t make the jump in application the student did, so I’m still learning #formativechat
I actually smack talk with students about how my build will be better than theirs and they do the same. In the smack talk you have to tell what and how what you create is better #FormativeChat
A1: I allow student to do a #geniushour project Q3 that allows them to learn something new or expand on a skill. It was very successful! Out of ~200 kids only 1 truly opted out completely. Most were good. I connect mine to CCSS. #DivergentEDU#formativechat
#FormativeChat - A3 - we should be coaching and mentoring along the way. This will ensure that the work products show mastery, even though the work might be personalized or non traditional.
Q3 How can we assess student work if they are choosing to show their learning in different ways that we may not have planned for?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
#formativechat A3: I am defiantly thinking there should be a rethink of the summative assessments. Moving away from test and into projects/ presentations about the their learning their way in the unit. This would need some interesting rubrics/appropriately detailed explanations
Q3 How can we assess student work if they are choosing to show their learning in different ways that we may not have planned for?

A1: Using different manipulatives whether that is ipads for presentation, instruments for performance, rhythmic manipulatives for creating, or a dance routine for responding. Allowing students to showcase their knowledge in a way that makes sense for them. #formativechat
A3: allowing S to self-grade is important. We’re objectives met or exceeded? Rubrics are great but they are also limiting . A few guidelines, on the other hand are more open ended and may allow for greater creativity. #formativechat
A2- using the design process model allows students to come up with a diverse set of solutions, especially to real life problems! This works well when you have standards that need to be demonstrated and/or other critera #FormativeChat
A3.2 We can also make sure students have access to the knowledge, skills, and materials they need to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. Less wealth/privilege shouldn’t mean less choice in assessment. #formativechat
Welcome to #formativechat! Thank you for being here! I am Mandy Froehlich, Director of Innovation and Tech & author of the #firewithinbook and #DivergentEDU! Please intro yourself & tell us your fave thing that happened over the holiday weekend!
A3: Great question. Part of authentic assessment is knowing what is going on. If a student is going in an unknown direction, ask clarifying questions. That will focus them and help you know where they are going and how you can assess.
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
Q3 How can we assess student work if they are choosing to show their learning in different ways that we may not have planned for?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A3: The 1⃣ single-point rubric provides alot of flexibility to it. Making the learning goals visible and assuring that Ss understand "what it looks like" is key🔑 #formativechat
A3: This can be tricky but using a rubric that outlines what standards must be addressed. I also like the idea of the single point rubric so that Ss have the opportunity to go above and beyond the requirements. #formativechat
A3: Not all student work has to be “assessed”. Sometimes a high-five for showing progress/growth is all a student needs! If it does need to be assessed - some general parameters for a rubric could work #formativechat
Q3 How can we assess student work if they are choosing to show their learning in different ways that we may not have planned for?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
I spend less than 5 minutes explaining anything. Activities have some directions (they can read them or listen to them read) assessment: here’s 5 things I want to know- show me #FormativeChat
A2 I stopped giving explicit instructions unless they were completelynecessary (MLA format). I let students know how they’ll be assessed, sometimes what the product should be, and all decisions are up to them to show learning. #formativechat
A3: For many units, I have concepts that I want them to show me that they understand. "The volume and shape of the three states of matter." You can show that a million ways. :) #formativechat
A3 have them complete our 3 question project log for each time they work on it. What did you do? What did you learn? What questions do you have? #FormativeChat
A3 If we are standards-based and use those standards as our single point rubric, then the products and the “minimum” requirements don’t matter. The point is the learning. The point is the skill. #formativechat
Q3 How can we assess student work if they are choosing to show their learning in different ways that we may not have planned for?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
YES! Rubrics must be built around standards. Get rid of compliance rubrics. No more "have ten photos on no less than 5 slides." That limits what the students can do. This is a mindset shift. #formativechat#divergentedu
A2: By being fliexible and understanding not all students will do the same thing the same way. I've adopted the "Organized Chaos" philisophy in my classroom. #formativechat
Q2 How can we challenge our own assumptions to provide students more opportunity in choice and allow them to do things we have not thought of?
#formativechat#DivergentEDU
A3: You can assess mastery and understanding regardless of how they have completed the task. I think it becomes more obvious that they understood the task when they choose an alternative way. Using a rubric or a checklist is that you build with the Ss. #formativechat
Thank you for an awesome chat. #formativechat is the calm at the start of the week. I so missed it last week! Have a wonderful week and give choice, voice, and encouragement to those around you!
Great ideas! If I think of blogging more as professional reflection, I am more consistent. Plus, my written reflection usually elicits more feedback than when I ask my colleagues #formativechat
A3 Students should be given the choice to produce a final product they find best showcases their learning. As teachers we must evaluate their product and ask critical questions to verify their learning, specific to your objectives #formativechat
Q3-Understand the curriculum outcomes and realize there are many types of indicators that show that outcome has been met. Need to rethink assessment and how to promote the learning process over grades. #worthwhilechallenge#formativechat
Q3 How can we assess student work if they are choosing to show their learning in different ways that we may not have planned for?

Great teaching advice. Teaching 4th & 5th grade #STEM, I found my students were always anxious for the explanation phase to END and the #Making time to start. Prolonged instructions rob students of valuable class time to make, create, collaborate, & actually LEARN #FormativeChat
#formativechat a2 If play is an activity in which parties involved find meaning. Then bring it on. Students have come up with activities I thought dull but they LOVE, so never presume.
A3- if we ourselves are clear about what we need to show mastery, then it shouldn't matter the format! But, sometimes you're teaching content AND other skills - like writing, teamwork, public speaking, etc. And there is a place for that in the process, too #FormativeChat
Holy buckets, Batman! @Rdene915 wasn't kidding when she said #formativechat was fast and furious! Thank you for joining in...your answers were amazing and I can't wait to go through the rest of them! Have a great night!
The heart of student choice is the belief that Ss will create products or demonstrate learning in novel and perhaps unplanned ways. This encourages flexible pedagogy and assessment. #formativechat
A3: having clearly defined learning goals which are broad enough to allow for learner centered exploration and options to show learning. Example: demonstrate and reflect on how I can participate in citizenship and civic responsibility in my community.

Shout-out to @froehlichm for guest hosting our #formativechat tonight! We were super honored that she was able to moderate and really appreciate the thoughtful questions she put together!

Not only does it limit students, but in some cases it causes inequities. At the very least it begins to measure and assess things not intended by the objective which wastes time. I don't know about you but I hear "we don't have time..." a million times a day #formativechat
A3: I use a series of rubrics, making sure to hit research, lit, writing, and speaking/listening for each project. I give points for visual appeal, professionalism, time spent in class, to measure positive growth. example: https://t.co/IvqYsAJpoA#formativechat#divergentedu
Thank you @Rdene915 and @froehlichm for hosting another awesome #formativechat. You have my brain going deep for answers to the questions this week. I love it! Now, I have some new challenges ahead. Thanks!
Absolutely! If a kid has a disability in writing, for example, and I'm not teaching or assessing writing in that moment WHY WOULD I MAKE THEM ONLY WRITE to show what they know?? #formativechat

Thanks for hosting tonight! Grwat questions and great new people to Twitter follow tonight. Thanks @Rdene915 (My Twitter Spirit Guide) for dragging me over here tonight! #formativechat
Thank you both, I have a lot of great take-aways from tonight! It was my first time joining but I'll be sure to check in again next week! #alwayslearning#formativechat
Yep! Rubrics can be a good starting point, but there are certainly times when we use them in limiting ways. Gotta always challenge those assumptions 👍#formativechat
Yes! Or if they have ADHD or are GT and writing is troublesome due to perfectionism or attention and we grade down for trivial writing errors when they covered the content perfectly. We have to be clear on what we are truly teaching and assessing. #formativechat

Yes! +10000! There is definitely a place for skills in addition to content, but if we don't understand what we are really measuring then we do everyone a disservice #formativechat

#formativechat a3 We pop up learning intentions yet our students see other things. Getting them named, practicing reflective thinkings will open up the assignment. Reverse engineer it.
#thinking
A3: By giving flexibility in our assessment tools. Getting away from the "what" and getting towards the "how" and "why" of what they are learning. Does it matter how they show their knowledge or that they have a strong conceptual understanding? #formativechat

I came from a traditional education model in the US and when I went to Kuwait in an inquiry PYP program. it was difficult for me to grasp as well. #formativechat

A1: SIDE QUESTS! #gamificaiton, #GBL. I think @mr_isaacs taught me this. Basically, Ss get the option to express themselves in different ways. Same learning & assessment for everyone, but there's an option to do something extra. Doesn't even have to be for credit. #formativechat
It's tough. It's tough for kids to transition to that learning style after years of traditional learning too. So worth it though I believe. #formativechat

Thanks! I appreciate that. I didn't remember #formativechat started at 2:30AM my time. If someone can tag me next week when a reminder is posted, that would be awesome. Who usually moderates this chat? @MarianaGSerrato?
Teamwork and constructive criticism! Social skills at its finest! Really like this idea of working with students and activating their critical thinking. #formativechat
Woah! Talk about cross-curricular learning and collaboration! This could involve specialist and their curriculum as well. Can I steal this? #formativechat

Thank you for hosting a great twitter chat @Rdene915 and @froehlichm! It was great to read inspiring educators opinions and thoughts on assessment and student agency. #formativechat
A1: I always do a project after the AP exam. Last year instead of saying "I want this" I asked them to display their personality islands (from Inside Out) in their own way. Got some amazing results. #formativechat
A3: Have the students create the rubric with you! You can have the basic idea of what standards you want them to be proficient on. With their ownership into building the rubric you'll get a lot more follow through too. #formativechat
