Tyler Pray. MS SS teacher from Indiana. Content related vocab word = primary & secondary sources. Non content related vocab word = empathy & integrity. #XPLAP
Shelley here, joining #XPLAP from Windsor, ON, CND. Currently teaching Grade 3. We use the word stamina a lot and it has become rich, meaningful and a great indicator of where are at... On track or otherwise.

Hi! I'm Adam a USHIS teacher from South Carolina. I like to use exacerbate. It is a word in our standards that the students never hear... and well... they "misunderstand" if its only seen on a test. #XPLAP
Hello! I am a pre-service teacher for ELA/SS 4th-8th. I love growing student vocab and add to their literacy! I’ve used the word Scholar in my classes. Students need to be encouraged in their academic identity and giving them the title of Scholar helps! #XPLAP
a1) we did an activity on https://t.co/1hQBj9CEKX to practice some vocabulary. Otherwise, we had a boss battle today to practice a bunch of different questions. #xplap
Big smiles and heaps of gratitude for your ongoing guidance, passion and commitment! @mrmatera You’re like a high octane cup of comfort, be it #XPLAP, podcast or YouTube!
A1 Review tools are good for these. Kahoot, Quizlet. Just started using Gimkit and it's really good. I also make use of word play, etymology, and silliness when building vocabulary. #xplap
A1- I have had students create a quizlet card set where students can then create quizzes to study. I am hoping to learn some more from this chat #xplap
Becky Van Duker, sixth grade, Medford, OR. I call my students scholars and use the words persevere, evaluate and reflection often while teaching. #XPLAP
A1 #xplap I AM WICKED SMART BUT NEVER, EVER PASSED ONE SPELLING TEST - NOT ONE!!! #killspellinglists Repetitive work requires creativity -- maybe gamify it . . . ^wink^
Besides games/gamification, I'm a big proponent of implementing art/color/creativity into repetitive tasks. Reciprocal teaching would be another helpful strategy. #XPLAP
A1b I have also done a creative project where the letters of a word have to be made out of pictures that would represent the meaning of the word. (Like the "I" in King would be a sword) #XPLAP
A1 For history key terms, one of my fav is quilts — google slides that can be printed and cut into squares and they match different sides to definition. Application and extension plus visual progress means win. #XPLAP
Good morning from Israel everybody! It's great to be here again! I can't find a specific word, because lots of people aren't even aware of Hebrew translations to international words. For example: telephone translates in Hebrew to "converse from far away". #xplap
A1: I use whiteboards as we practice. Kids love using them! We will play different games. I will also give the answer and have them come up with the problem. #xplap
A1 Being repetitive but changing it up in quizzes and quiz games. Similar questions and distractors but different enough to make recall and application challenging. #xplap All about that retrieval practice.
Yes, it makes the repetition more "bearable" for them. They just discovered how to sabotage other players this week. Some great moments for sure. #XPLAP
"Converse from far away" feels likes a great description of SOME of my conversations with my students. Are you hearing me? Why can't I make it - make sense for you! #xplap
A1 - Story/role play & celebration = woohoo & raise the roof actions. Also the power of ‘Not yet’, pairing/partnering & reinforcement of the power of mistakes & the 12X rule. I use the climbing stair analogy as well... You have to take the steps to get to th next level. #XPLAP
A1: I think the obvious answer here is gamifying the boring task: like maybe give extra XP for each word the Ss gets right. Or having a boss battle spelling bee. #xplap
A2 #xplap American Sign Language . -- go to https://t.co/Xi0MbKxqG8 and learn the sign for the words kids are learning -- so visual and makes a brain/body connection
You're so right! I think we all had the experience of standing in front of the class saying: "I've explained this to you a lot of times before, what don't you understand?" awful. #xplap
A2 @plickers for warm-up and closure (ticket out the door), @quizizz Quizlet and @gimkit round out the practice. Throw in Jenga and Taboo once in awhile for non digital. #xplap
A1: I have kept students in the loop on WHY we do the everyday activities. I find these explanations help give purpose. It’s also fun to include silly facts about topics under study! #XPLAP
A2: I don’t do lists, etc. I do @quizizz or make a @quizlet occasionally, but I just to reinforce vocabulary by having students work with it and use the info in discussions, etc. They seem to retain it better. #XPlap
A2 A couple of other things we do are trying to work the words into conversation. Also, the Frayer model is a good way to make key words stick. Fishbowl is a good practice game too. #xplap
With middlers I used a technique I called "blah blah" where I would replace the vocab word in a sentence with "blah blah" and challenge them to use context clues to guess it. #XPLAP
A2: One way I quiz my kids is through vocabulary challenges at the end of each ELA unit. I create a multiple choice PowerPoint and they are tested on six weeks of words. Its a big build up and an intense competition. #XPLAP
A2: I use a GLAD strategy called a CCD chart, to switch things up I allow them to make their own from a set of 20 words. I integrate vocab regularly into daily writing prompts and reading but have a formal quiz weekly; I also do partner or group quizzes.
#XPLAP
A2: I like using this old guy. Ask vocabulary questions and they get a try. Give point values to each. Super fun. More on https://t.co/HlHOyv1rEH#xplap
A2 I have words written on my word wall so they see them everyday. I use our current vocab as much as possible outside of the classroom and encourage the Ss to do the same with peers and teachers. A student created narrative using the vocab as a side quest could be cool. #XPLAP
A2- I do boss battles with @classcraftgame but I usually do them as we prepare for a test...I would love to add some more things to do as more than test prep #xplap
A2 - As a Gr 3 teacher, I do not find that I have much of a focus on memorizing vocab. That said, I consistently reinforce the use of content/theme specific vocabulary. We have a math word wall, ‘Google Books’, & personal dictionaries to collect and gather key terms/ideas. #XPLAP
A2: I build in repeated exposure to any words that are need to know. Students see/read, hear/discuss, and write about the topic of study while using the vocab words. The key is to use them in conversation and written expression. #XPLAP
We use a program called THRASS which I love and it has helped my students with their spelling as a letter doesn't make a sound until it's in a word. We use what I call 'Body THRASS' and coding to spell words to help Ss make other connections to spell words. #XPlap
I need to have Ss make the questions for @GetKahoot and other vocab games. I have not tried Gimkit's student question construction yet. There's the big learnin' #xplap
A2: I make it a point to try to work vocab words into our conversations, even when we're learning other subjects, and make a big deal about it when kids use or find vocab words "in the wild" #XPLAP
I like word part lists because they have more force multiplication power. I usually get lists from the text we are reading and make them deal with it inline instead of divorced from the context. #XPLAP
A2: I feel it is critical that they have experience with the vocabulary first. They need something to hang it on to. Then I like to use different retrieval practices from https://t.co/LPlzerHoPk Space practice, interleaving, so many things that work with gamification. #XPLAP
Yes! They often struggle but it reveals so much about their understanding and also is a great way to demonstrate how differently our minds work! #xplap
A2 visualization with seek and find — can they find the vocab or its definition in current events, landscape, architecture or commercial ads, snap a pic and share with class. #XPLAP
A2: Another great game that you can play with your vocab is Monikers but using your vocab. Here is a great review of the game https://t.co/YGJcBZCMj1 Right @EastonA1#XPLAP
A2 I try and use body movements to help Ss remember vocabulary or to help them remember structure or something. We use 'ah, ah' ah staying alive' but change it to , 'Ah, ah, ah leave a line, leave a line' for paragraph breaks. #XPlap
A3 #xplap Kind of already mentioned but kids who find the words "in the wild" - newpaper, tv shows, signs, etc can bring in their examples for a chance at a prize drawing #repeat
I noticed the other day that Kahoot has an import from spreadsheet option now, does quizlet or gimkit have that? Then students could submit questions on a google form and wouldn't have to have an account at all. #xplap

A3 Can't remember where I got this but I like using "Historic Heads". 5 images in a blank skull that represents what that figure would have been thinking about at a point in their lives. Requires some base content specific vocab. #XPLAP
Have you used @PearDeck to have them make their own Vocab cards? @jmattmiller had a video on this. I have also had them make their own lists and used it for quizlet live games with word count limits. it is more powerful when they have to consider the meaning. #XPLAP

Charades is still a classic. The ‘masking tape on the back’ game is always a good time too. Sometimes I have to force myself to back away from the tech, like quizlet and gimkit, and bring back the old school. Kids love them! #XPLAP
A3 - This chat has me totally rethinking my practice around vocabulary! Not sure if this is because I’m a homeroom teacher, but my focus is always using vocabulary in context... And through choice/student created projects, hands on tasks... #XPLAP
#xplap OMG . Can we talk about math vocabulary? I once had a friend teaching GRADE 9 MATH who routinely told his students to PLUS THE PROBLEM!!!!!! Really?
A3 We work vocabulary and expressions into our practice through standards like using precise language in math and teaching elaboration phrases in writing / reading. #xplap
A2: Just a thought: have a "boss battle": one team challenges another team to spell a word. The "spelling team" has an amount of hit points that can damage the "challenging team". This amount of hit points decreases for each mistake the "spelling team" makes. Get it? #xplap
A3: as mentioned, multiple encounters with the words is vital! To ensure students use the words put them on notes cards, have students do partner talks focusing on using 1 word at a time and all that goes with it! #XPLAP
A3: For math vocabulary we have a poster challenge. Ss work with a partner to define, provide an example of, and the symbols for given math vocabulary words. They can theme their poster however they like. They gets really creative. #XPlap
A3: I love to have students write stories w/ vocab and use dice to add challenges. Ex: Team rolls di and has to include an unrelated word 1=Squirrel, 2=Rainbow, etc. Sometimes dice roll bans common words for the theme like banning "Elsa" when describing the plot of Frozen. #xplap
I've never tried this for an assessment, but it could easily work as one: vocabulary word + definition scavenger hunt. Hide the definitions throughout the school, students go out to find, and award points for accuracy & time. #XPLAP
A3: I do Taboo cards on my assessments... They put a vocab word on the top and then have to fill in 5 words you couldn't say. Really shows that they understand the word. #XPLAP
A3: For quizzing word parts, I have made lists of nonsense words made from real roots and affixes, and I made them match the "should-be-words" with possible meanings. Lots of blank looks at first, but cool later. They loved to make up new words that way, too. #xplap
Have you played? There are lots of online versions where you can customize the words. Then students would practice word association to get their team to guess their "agents." #xplap
Haha, wow. I try to use the mathematically correct terms as much as possible. I had to convince students that a "smaller" number referred to its size and not its value. #XPLAP
Me same. Before I do the first one I love saying, “Chances are you are going to fail this quiz.” Now the students just laugh because they known they will get a chance to take out gain several times. #xplap
I also use @Seesaw and the students type their words then explain the meaning of the word by drawing or using emojis. It is especially great with homophones and homonyms. #XPlap
Welcome to #XPLAP and our new Engagement Strategies Series. Topic One: Vocab.
Please take a moment to introduce yourself and share a word that you love to use with your students that is a stretch for them to know but you use it anyway.
A3: I'm thinking a side quest would be fun for this: When a S uses a word correctly, they get XP. The class has no idea why he got it. I assume they will figure it out when other Ss do the same, and also get XP. #xplap
This is where we want to move students to (incorporating vocabulary in context as opposed to in isolation). We ultimately want our students to be able to take specific, targeted learning, incorporate it into their overall understanding, and apply it (not mc, fill blanks). #XPLAP
A3: I have enjoyed students building models "Chopped" style. They are given basic building materials (lego,play-doh) but then I give them a "surprise" independent that has to be incorporated in a meaningful way. So fun to see their creativity. #XPLAP
I love teaching idioms to my students. I have a board game called Win, Lose or Draw. It's kind of like Pictionary with idioms. And idiom is a great vocab word too! #xplap
Right? My 2nd graders knew that if they didn't say "difference" but tried to tell me they needed to MINUS, they were gonna hear about it! #xplap#leadthem
This could be a A2 or A3, but I love playing ‘LINGO’ for practice or assessment. It works like BINGO but kids have to write in their words into a 3 x 3 grid from a list of present/past vocabulary words /comp skills/ or grammar terms. I’ve done it in partner groups or ind. #XPLAP
A3- apart from boss battles and some other review games that are not specific to vocabulary I do not really have anything here...needing some ideas from the amazing #xplap community 😁
@GetKahoot is a great tech game, but when I was in Malaysia for @LRTT_Training we didn't have the tech available so we created what I called a DIY Kahoot. Our students came up with the questions and then I read it out. It was so much fun! #XPlap

Not sure about collaboration feature, but I think it is among premium users. No sweat. Use #Quizlet to collect materials then port to #Gimkit. I even use #GoogleForms to do that, too. Easy peasy. #xplap
Really? Wow. That makes me feel good. You are way above my station so far, but I'm getting there, man. You have really inspired a lot of spark for me so far. #xplap
Thanks. I am finally getting to the point where I am relaxed enough to just let things flow out spontaneously. Too bad I don't know French. Otherwise I might want to teach English in Canada! #xplap
As always @mrmatera these conversations add so much to my classroom and I know that many other gain so much for Tuesday’s. So glad for all that the #xplap community gives to my classroom. See you all soon 😁
Always one to make me ponder, question and want to do better/be more! Thank you @mrmatera and the #XPLAP community for spinning words and providing the dish on all things vocabulary based!
