#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

Hey So stoked to be back at it. I'm Ben in Santa Cruz and I'm all about for and classrooms!
Q1: What are Pro Tips for teachers new to Badges? What questions should they be considering?
A1. I'm completely new to this ready to learn
Actually, that's a point in and of itself: Seek questions just as much as answers!
A1: Ts should always consider the end product. What do I want my Ss to learn and what evidence will I require to demo that.
A1: Remember the 'A' in SMART goals! Start small > study > learn > achieve > reiterate
Rebecca Leid - Spanish teacher/Instructional coach - Williamsport, PA - new to badges. Incorporating for prof. dev. this year
Are there any articles you can reference about badges?
A1: agreed - being able to answer the q "why" is essential.
A1: Do the badges have only internal (private) values, or are you going for external values (i.e.: Open Badges) ?
Yes!
1) Make it about the learners, not the tech
2) Evidence is powerful https://t.co/8IFdADoO3s
A1: Ts should always consider the end product. What do I want my Ss to learn and what evidence will I require to demo that.
A1: what skills do end consumers (employers? college?) want, and seek their endorsement of badges to give value to students
here is one resource - let us know if more info about a specific aspect of badges would help
Great question to consider Ahn! Can you expand on that for folks totally new to Badges?
Is this a program to create badges for your classroom?
Keep the pro tips and questions coming! We're going to push out question 2 in the meantime!
Q2: What’s new, different or improved in the Badges landscape that we need to know about?
1a: allow issued badges to persist and earners can use that as a lifelong record. Long value after issued
A2: at least one provider of the Common App is allowing students to integrate Badges to share w colleges
1b: Private badges would have short term values limited to just your classroom/school . Program same, value scope different.
A2: endorsements ... kind of still emerging. But https://t.co/JYRLBJVQyu now will endorse preservice Ed Tech badging systems
Looks like it could be a big deal! Do you mind elaborating on "endorsement" for folks new to that word?
The most basic of ones. Very naive to this https://t.co/Pc8NXzA8nj
So many! What kind of articles are you looking for?
I like what is doing at her school by getting local business involved as rewards for badges earned
A2: Higher Ed beginning to recognize some PD Badges for grad level credit! knows more...
Yes, it helps with establishing badge credibility by having a known entity endorse the badges.
. There are some pretty sweet evidence tracking features in where learners can upload work & get feedback
In this case, AECT is a national Ed Tech organization with a badging committee providing this endorsement.
What exactly are the businesses rewarding?
I'm chair of that committee ... we review badges for their rigor in criteria and reviewing practices for endorsement.
A1: Yes! Having a clear answer for Badge Earners who ask: "Why should I care?" https://t.co/pkEgufU3Iz
I like what is doing at her school by getting local business involved as rewards for badges earned

We're tying bdg goals with badges for individualized prof dev. Then using it to gamify our PD against building level teams!
