Hi #waledchat! from PA. I teach 6th grade science. Instead of celebrsgind Christmas, I’ve been celebrating my “unbirthday.” Far less stressful and a lot less work! 😬Isupposed to be at store right now so I can ride ascooter b4 they have boxes in the aisles and get in my way.
A1: Definitely feel like I have the gift of relatability to my students. Ss know they can come to me and trust me. They also understand that I can empathize with them. I want them to know that I am their biggest fan! #waledchat

A1: a heart for children. With that, a person will strive to be better in all facets of their position. They will work longer hours; have greater goals; do more for the children; and do more for their school. It starts with HEART. #waledchat
A1: The ability to make a difference each day by empowering others and carrying myself in such a way that inspires, motivates, and leads others to be the best they can be for Ss and as a student. #waledchat
A1: My gift is enthusiasm (and passion!) I LOVE what I do, love my students and staff, and truly believe you can move mountains if you just give it a go! #waledchat
A1: The ability to inspire others to look within themselves to see the innate power they already possess and to take ownership and responsibility for all the things that occur in their lives #waledchat
A1 one gift I have is I never stop. I want to make sure I am literally do everything I can to help my Ss make progress and most importantly love school. #waledchat
A1: My ability to build relationships. It has always come easy for some reason and it is the first thing described to me on every evaluation. #waledchat
All of that sounds great. As a SPED teacher, I really like "learn what's driving their behavior!" I'm always seeking answers to this but haven't really found the right wording. I'll have to try your wording! #waledchat
A1: My edu-superpower? As an admin, I seriously made sure I was rarely, if ever, the smartest person in the room on any topic. Meritocracy and consensus don't have to me scary or messy. #waledchat
Hi there! Sherri with @ThirstyBeesNY, educator in the Catskills. I have many favorites, but spending time with loved ones is definitely at the top of the list. #waledchat
A1: one gift I have is an almost unending supply of patience...teaching will push your buttons at times and being able to remain in the moment, letting a learner learn at their pace, and staying zen when times are not is a gift I have developed #waledchat
A2: In a middle school, we run into many kids (and adults) that are holding on for dear life. Our words have great power to pull people into safety and raise them up. #waledchat
A2: I use my gift of being able to connect with students during troubling times by listening, offering some advice, listen more then make a personal connection if possible. Most important..reminding them they’re not alone #waledchat
A1 As an instructional designer of dramafied learning that uses comics and narrative, my gifts are tools that bypass resistance to learning and integrating new knowledge. #waledchat
A2: Be there for them to reset when they walk through the door, out to recess, or after minor/major incidents that might occur through the school day or weekend. #waledchat
A2: Once Ss take ownership and responsibility for their lives they can do anything. It's the ultimate lightbulb moment. I wish I would have figured this out much sooner in my own life. #waledchat
A2: I use compassion to drive what we're doing in class. If we need to take a break from curriculum to talk about friendships, we do. I can read my students well and adjust what we're doing accordingly. It helps us all in building community #waledchat
A2: I have many students who share tough things with me. I also have students who love to share successes with me. I use my gift to make kids feel like my room is a safe place. Had an S tell their parent that they appreciate how I try to get to know each one of them! #waledchat
A2 - I provide opportunities for my students to learn stuff...knowledge...to help them learn other stuff.
Knowledge warrior...stomping out ignorance. #waledchat#SOI
Hi! Danielle from MA jumping in a bit late!! #waledchat
A1: one gift I have as an educator is connecting with kids. I genuinely love being around middle school kids & getting to know them.
A2: When you are passionate for what you do and whom you serve, you pave a path of accessibility complete with the tools to work through any obstacles that come your way! #waledchat
A1: For me, it’s my ability to relate to my students. I feel like students feel comfortable telling me anything. Plus, it creates community. #waledchat
A2: I use it to provide choice in lessons, allow Ss to better connect to history, find opportunities to have conversations to share creative ideas. #waledchat
A2 In MS you have to bring the fun! I love that they appreciate silly and zany. Outside of the classroom I am very reserved and quiet. I save it all for my kiddos. #waledchat
A2: I let my children know that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. And that they are powerful beyond measure and to never fear their greatness. #waledchat
A2: When we build genuine relationships with kids we show them they matter and we believe in them—that seemingly simple act can change the world. #waledchat
A2: Believing in and empathizing with Ss goes very far in building relationships and a class community. When "We" is heard more than "I" it is confirmed that we've moved from individuals to community.
#waledchat
A2: I'm good at listening and writing while Ss talk. Often, I end up helping them solve a problem because I just listen and write while they talk. #waledchat
A2: I pour myself into doing what’s best for them: paint the hallways so that they look nice; put up vinyl lettering with great quotes to inspire them; eat lunch with them; talk to them, not at them; established TRIBE leadership for students; established Beta Club; #waledchat
A2: I use what they like and what they know to teach them math, to help them understand being a 7th grader a little better and to let them know that someone is listening. #waledchat
A2: I think having a sense of humor makes me relatable. We change in their eyes the longer we teach. I went from the young one, to the cool aunt and now to the mom. I am someone they know they can depend on #waledchat
A2: Not giving up helps create stronger relationships because my Ss know that I’ll ALWAYS be there for them- no matter what. They know they can count me & that I’ll support them along the way #waledchat
A1- My one gift is determination. Determination to build relationships w/ss and colleagues, determination to not just settle for my ss or myself, and determination to keep growing and learning #waledchat
Laura you comment made me think of our technology and innovation teacher @MapleWarriors If you haven't connected with @sara_freeman yet you need to do so! #waledchat
In reply to
@LBStrunk, @MrPStrunk, @MapleWarriors, @sara_freeman
A2. Carving out time w/ Ss everyday at eating times. Eating, playing, laughing together in small groups called the Snack Pack and the Lunch Bunch. #waledchat
A2 I tutor my Ss who are struggling 4 days a week after school. I am always looking for new ways to reach every one of them. I also ❤️ to do room transformations and give each class a special name to live by. #waledchat
A2: I allow my patience to let students see I will not give up on them, I will maintain calm and motivated until they are as well. I want them to see too that things take time, and if I can model waiting for greatness to occur I think it shows them they can too #waledchat
A2: Kids are more apt to work for adults who they feel truly care for them. Is it 100% foolproof? No but even the hardest to reach kid will let you in every once in a while #waledchat
A2 I believe in always meeting your students half way under almost all circumstances. This still allows you to hold them accountable which is why you should be grounded as an educator #waledchat 👌🏾
A2: established Raider Rallies to recognize kids; established House System; established EarlyAct service club; established monthly outreach program, “Walk the Walk”; created weekly STEM rather than bi-weekly; new STEM format. I love my kids. #waledchat
A2~
~allows both of us -Ss&Ts to take the time to work through the good, the bad & the ugly & grow from these shared experiences ... they always know that a clean slate everyday is there for them ~ no matter what
#waledchat
A2: It provides my students more opportunities to safely fail in my classroom. When they know that I had failures in school and they see what I became, they feel safe. #waledchat
A2: allows me to seem approachable which allows them to seek help & self-advocate & take risks when I encourage them to until they take risks on their own resulting in them exceeding their potential #waledchat
Sixth grade language arts! I also had some science and US History in the mix as well for a few years...but I've always had a special passion for literacy. 💗💗 #waledchat
A2 I share my experiences while growing up both as a motivational technique as well as to inform my students of pitfalls. Learning English is tough. #waledchat
Absolutely. Reading, writing, and math are important. Being a functional human being is equally important. I strive to help my students grow in all areas #waledchat
A2: I listen. I let them vent. I don't offer any judgment or opinions - unless they ask (and then I am very careful in how I answer, because I want them to try to figure things out on their own). I'm there for my students - and that means so much to them. #waledchat
A3: At my particular school I would put communication on the naughty list. It's definitely something that can be improved all around. Both communication within the school and between the school and families #waledchat
A3: Negativity. @ERobbPrincipal helped me reflect on how we have the opportunity to choose positivity. So I would definitely give a big lump of coal to negativity that exists in schools! #waledchat
A2- kids and staff know I like them and they appreciate it.i'm able to be on their team and build relationships. Plus, I'm always doing something wacky or unexpected with kids and they trust me to help them succeed because they know I like them too much to set them up #waledchat
A2: Building positive relationships enables me to incorporate student interests into my lessons. Relationship building also helps me meet each student where they are. My kids know that I care about and love them. #waledchat
A2- I hope that I show my ss that w/determination and preserving they can conquer “hard stuff.” Giving up is not an option and I hope that by the end of the year my kiddos see all that they mastered #waledchat
A2: increased student recognition for Honor Roll; increased recognition for behavior - monthly rather than quarterly. All of this in 16 months at my new school. It’s not bragging about me; it’s reflecting on how I pour myself into the students, as they deserve. #waledchat
A3: One thing I do all the time is say Yes... Even when I know I'm swamped, I say yes. Even if I don't know what the tech is I've been asked about, I say yes... I guess this habit could go on the naught list.
#waledchat
A3 The educational system's textbook/edtech policies that need to be streamlined or consolidated. Innovation doesn't always come from educators because they're kinda busy doing their jobs. #waledchat
A3: Rigid schedules. Sometimes you just need a little more time in one subject and a little less time in others! It's nice when you have the flexibility to dive deep in a project, knowing the kids will learn the content (and probably retain it better!) #waledchat
a2 I come up with very creative lessons. They never know quite what we're going to do...lol... My kiddos don't want to leave or miss my class #waledchat
A1 I would say that I put a focus on the #WholeChild & am constantly looking at ways to engage the whole school whole community, which leads to being relational #waledchat
A3: The current state of assessments. Teaching and classroom practices have grown and evolved so much, yet, in most cases, assessment has not evolved with them. More here: https://t.co/k696ARM08x#waledchat
A3: Negativity. It causes people to focus on problems rather than possible solutions. It’s toxic. Negativity keeps us from reaching our full potential and achieving our goals #waledchat
A3: Negativity, apathy, complacency - and teachers who line up at the door at the end of the day (just like the students), waiting for the bell to ring so they can leave. Oy! #waledchat
A4: Model, model, model! I need to extend grace to Ss in the moment and make sure I am presenting my best self to them each situation that arises. #waledchat
A4: I am hopeful to spread positivity. I have been blessed in so many ways, I have joy in my heart. I am hopeful that I can share that joy with others! #waledchat
A4: I try and communicate as much and as clearly as possible. I feel like it's better to have too much information than not enough. In the new year I'll keep doing my part and encouraging the same of others #waledchat
A3: standardized testing as not one person is standard as well keeping all subjects separate when in actuality none can truly exist with out the other #waledchat
I often think about how many students are branded as "lazy" when in reality they don't have the means to complete work at home, be it parental support, a computer, a quality learning environment, or time. #waledchat
A3: the meetings!! so. many. meetings. They're necessary (at times 🙄) but it takes away from planning. You know, the legit backbone of our job #waledchat
A4. Test scores are part of a school experience but just as important are SEL and soft skills. Relationships are most important and the mindsets we live by. #waledchat
A2 this serves as my guiding light because I am always reflecting on how we can support the #WholeChild through the different practices, processes, & procedures of what we do in education #waledchat
A4- love this question. I'm trying super hard to get https://t.co/mHteIuddM5 discussion protocols into our professional conversations at our school to maximize efficiency and value for time together as teachers #waledchat
A4: This is a hard one with Standarized testing, not sure it belongs on a nice list. I'm open to ideas though. It's not going anywhere anytime soon. #waledchat
A4) By changing our perspective: a standardized test can be helpful when used to diagnose how much a learner has grown and where improvement is needed. Instead of it being used to punish a student, teacher, and campus. #waledchat
A4: Talk to people who are being negative and see if through discussion & collaboration the attitude can transform into positive thinking. I’ve found there is usually frustration, misconceptions, and disappointment that causes the negativity. #waledchat
A4: We are starting with an honest look at current reality, getting the right people in the room to talk things through, and working as a team to improve. #waledchat
A4 Spending more times with kids talking about the realities of the world...talking about the importance of health happiness being kind and not getting caught up in the game of getting in the best college #waledchat
A4: I don't know that I can tackle it by myself, but I do know that I can continue great practice in my classroom, give Ss a voice, communicate with other Ts who share my passion, and spread and share my joy and passion. #waledchat
A3 The biggest gap that is disheartening for me is that many of our schools are not equipped properly to handle the caseload of students & families w/ACE’s & trauma, which makes it difficult for our students to learn #waledchat#MaslowBeforeWeBloom
A4: We can transform assessments by giving students voice, choice, and ownership. For example, show students the criteria/standards, and have them design their assessments to demonstrate their understanding. https://t.co/pmUGEDW5dx#waledchat
A4: Continue to be vocal about why homework is an equity nightmare. Ask hard questions in leadership meetings and in conversations with teachers. Keep my room open during lunches, IF period, and after school for students to finish work so they don't take it home. #waledchat
A4 In the case I mentioned re consolidated policies on edtech/textbook purchases and priorities - a new paradigm would need to be created and implemented. I've resorted to developing online courses. :( #waledchat
A4- Be a risk taker and try the things that have been proven to lead to ss growth. Your willingness will cause curiosity that can then lead to change for all kids. #waledchat
A4: for testing come up with new and creative ways to assess learning and for subject separation show students how they are all interconnected, might be a challenge to point out at times but it could even be a game where they find the overlapping subjects! #waledchat
A4: Educate, encourage, model what commitment and caring looks like, and find things that those educators like to do and let them do it in the school setting. Or..... #waledchat
A5: Going to Cumberland, MD to celebrate Christmas with @LBStrunk's family. Love getting to do that. Spending New Years back in Winchester. Also looking forward to my parents coming down in January for us to have a Strunk Christmas! :D #waledchat
Q5: I'm spending this weekend with my best friend and her family and then flying to AZ on Monday to spend the rest of break with my parents. I'm ready for some sun and relaxation! #waledchat
I get so frustrated when a kid who scored a 200 last year scores a 399 and is marked as a "fail" even though the pass is a 400. Just bugs the daylights out of me! #waledchat
A4 have been looking a lot at @caselorg & looking at ways to be intentional & relational by providing opportunities for our staff to build relationships, & build in opportunities to focus on #SEL w/our students, families, and community #waledchat
A5: Family, family, and eating peanut butter balls! Watching A Christmas Story, It's a Wonderful Life, and Polar Express. Listening to podcasts and finishing a book. #waledchat
A4: mentor and use goal setting. Continue to strive for equity and having high expectations. Build relationships. Start having those courageous conversations and using culturally responsive teaching practices❤️ #waledchat
We made up a song, using the Wonder Pets theme, to sing in the hallway when Ss are not moving into the classroom! "The bell, the bell is ringing! The bell, we'll be right there. The bell, the bell is ringing! There's a S in trouble..." #waledchat
A5: Before that clock strikes midnight, I want to make sure I reflect on this year and figure out what can be changed..all while celebrating with family #waledchat
More awareness is being brought to this. Measure growth and ability to apply skills on a real world problem, not a multiple choice test. Tests are important in life but so many variables to judge a “point in time” test. #waledchat
A5: I will be celebrating the season and saying hello to the new year with treasured time alongside friend and family. Tech will take a firm back seat to reconnecting face to face.
#waledchat
A5: staying away from the school: I love it, it’s my refuge. However, 60+ hours per week after painting it all summer leaves me in need of downtime and family time. Son home from college; want to soak up the time with him & other children & beautiful wife. #waledchat
A4 Unfortunately I cant really change the grading system ☹️ I can communicate how successfully I think students have worked on their learning goals #waledchat
A5: I'm still trying to make it through the last day of school, haha, so I haven't thought that far ahead. Hopefully, the holidays will be peaceful and happy at home with family. #waledchat
A5 this has been a great semester of learning as I transitioned from district administration to campus administration so I’m celebrating all the wins w/staff, students, families and community this semester, will also be spending time w/family to recharge #waledchat
A5 My first online course will be HOW TO TRANSLATE FEEDBACK INTO SUCCESSFUL WRITING. The tools are for Ss in high school, college or lifelong learners who want to pursue writing. #waledchat
A5: Christmas is so relaxed. We hang out together, eat, laugh, and enjoy having nothing in particular we have to do. And being on the beach helps 😉. We usually usher in the new year by watching the fireworks on the beach. #waledchat
A5: Eating, playing, relaxing, reading, writing, hanging out with friends. For New Year's - well, I loved living in AK and celebrating the NY ball drop. It meant I could go to bed at 9:00, lol. Now that I'm back in NY? I'll be lucky to make it to midnight! #waledchat
A4: I can look for extra pockets of time and not allow rigid schedules to be a constraint that prevents great learning from happening! Acknowledge the reality, but strive for greatness by being creative and innovative with planning and teaching! #waledchat
A5: Taking the time to focus on being truly present & appreciate every single moment with family. Make the most of this time off from school and devote it 100% to family. Each new year’s eve we open up our memory boxes & reflect on events & memories from the year. #waledchat
