Time for #DevDiscuss, an hour-long Twitter chat. Tonight's topic is ✨ Ideal office setups ✨ Let's get the chat started. - What makes for a great office environment? - What makes for a less-than-ideal office environment? - Are you happy with your personal setup?
  • kvlly Apr 24 @ 9:05 PM EDT
My ideal office setup looks a little like this. #DevDiscuss
  • shannon_crabill Apr 24 @ 9:06 PM EDT
Less than ideal: "angry" wall colors, too open of a space (as in, noise carries), too cold/too warm #DevDiscuss
  • getDanArias Apr 24 @ 9:06 PM EDT
NOT. OPEN. SPACE. PLEASE. The struggle is real! Not even Bose noise cancelling headphones can help! #DevDiscuss

As an entrepreneur, working out of a co-working space has changed my entire work experience. My team is remote, so I can socialize with other entrepreneurs in the same office space. Large community tables + plenty of coffee. #DevDiscuss
  • mrtnrst Apr 24 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Ideal Office Setup: 1. Coffee and Tea 2. Place to work that isn’t my desk 3. Well lit, I already wear glasses and don’t need to strain my eyes more 4. Ability to work remote 5. @TopoChicoUSA #DevDiscuss
  • recursivefaults Apr 24 @ 9:12 PM EDT
Default to working together, spaces to think alone, cozy break room with snacks, place to blow of steam, conference rooms with flexible table setups. Leadership with vision that defer to teams and bring transparency to all areas of business. #DevDiscuss

A great office has both collab and quiet private areas. Distractions and noise ruin concentration. My current office has a great mix of areas, after we did some shuffling. #DevDiscuss

I've already got a corner office, so ✅ on that. Otherwise, I've found that natural light is a must; I was in an inner-facing cubical without sunlight access for about a year and a half, which made this apparent. #DevDiscuss

Sitting/standings desks, multi monitors, sitting together with all scrum team members (PO/dev/design/QA). Oh and pet friendly 🐶 too. My current setup in other words 😁 #DevDiscuss

I've only ever been in open office situations. I've had pretty severe ADHD my whole life and it can be pretty bad. Luckily at 3 separate employers over the years, they've all been super accommodating. Headphones are an industry trend I hope never dies. #DevDiscuss
  • thatseandempsey Apr 24 @ 9:16 PM EDT
My ideal situation is remote. My home office is built to reduce distractions. I get _a lot_ more done when allowed to work from home. My setup has been consistent for years. Very happy with it. #DevDiscuss
  • DevelopmentMatt Apr 24 @ 9:16 PM EDT

A great office environment is mindful of aneurotypical folks as well as intro/extroverts. Is there a place I can go to chat? Or be alone? Do I need to bring my own headphones? If there are snacks, do they incorporate food allergies? #DevDiscuss
  • nicktail Apr 24 @ 9:19 PM EDT
No. Cubicles. I would refuse a job offer if they expected me to work in a cubicle. #DevDiscuss

+ too much communication/too many communication channels. It gets overwhelming and hurts productivity #devdiscuss
  • castelocl Apr 24 @ 9:21 PM EDT
Ideal work setup: A mix of work in an office with little distractions (coworking space, library) and sometimes work from home. #DevDiscuss
  • jmdembe Apr 24 @ 9:22 PM EDT
I don't know how else to define this, but loud spaces really brings down my productivity. I'm talking about both design and sound. I am had to deal with my ADHD every time I go to my laptop, I need some semblance of calm around me as I work #devdiscuss
  • pctroll Apr 24 @ 9:22 PM EDT
We thought cubicles were bad, until we finally transitioned to 100% open spaces and we found hell. A minimum of privacy is required for concentration, inspiration, and better communication. #devdiscuss

Biggest office complaint I have is getting the right chair + desk height for my 5'2" stature. My home office has an exercise ball but the desk height isn't quite right. It has led to some lower back and upper trapz pain #DevDiscuss
  • Paladin677 Apr 24 @ 9:23 PM EDT
An ideal office includes a consideration to greatly reduce interruptions and has a nearby location that actively encourages you to step away from work periodically to reset. #DevDiscuss

  • mgaruccio Apr 24 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Ideal setup for me is single large (36"+) display with a trackball and 60% sized kb in a quiet office #DevDiscuss
  • TheTrentHarvey Apr 24 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Ideal office is private / semi-private personal space, modern and airy aesthetics /w ample social or lounge space for casual discussions. Plus modern, fully equipped, clean, functional conference rooms. #DevDiscuss
  • TheTrentHarvey Apr 24 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Less than ideal is when people are forced to be crowded together and it's not possible to escape noise / distractions in order to immerse yourself in the work. It also doesn't help when the environment is stuffy, bland, and depressing. #DevDiscuss
  • TheOriginalBPC Apr 24 @ 9:23 PM EDT
A great office environment is a nice mix of variety but has some order to it. Less than the ideal environment is very hostile. People are more interested in the office politics than coding. Right now my setup is at home and gives me a good view of the road #devdiscuss

Oh... Tonight's #devdiscuss is about ideal office setups. Wondering what those fine folks think about tunes in the office?
    • davidbrunelle Apr 24 @ 5:20 PM EDT
Time for an incredibly scientific twitter poll. How do you feel about music in the office? 🎼🎹🥁🎷🎺 Would also love to hear details and experiences that inform your preference 👌
  • gdavis92 Apr 24 @ 9:26 PM EDT
Are open office schemes really as bad as everyone says? As in, categorically so? I've only worked in a closed office setting (currently share an office with another dev) and liked it, but enjoy social interaction. #devdiscuss
  • sam_ferree Apr 24 @ 9:26 PM EDT
I’m an Extrovert so it’s real easy for me to socialize too much. So while teamwork and collaboration is important, I love having a place set away where I can crank the music and get wired in for a solid 3-5 hours. Dream Workplace: Free caffeine. #DevDiscuss
  • jmdembe Apr 24 @ 9:27 PM EDT
Big plus: allergy-conscious snacks (and yes, I am saying this as the mayor of the peanut-free lunch table). You don't know what allergies your fellow co-workers may have #devdiscuss
  • shannon_crabill Apr 24 @ 9:27 PM EDT
I hear ya. However, being uncomfortable at work is not an environment that is conducive to being productive, writing good code, moral, overall happiness, etc #devdiscuss

Whether remote or not, any space should allow for me to collaborate with in person or out of office coworkers WITHOUT bothering anyone who is not part of those conversations. Otherwise you avoid collaboration due to environment, and that’s not good. #DevDiscuss
  • davidbrunelle Apr 24 @ 9:29 PM EDT
My ideal office: - Open office - Lots of brakeout spaces - Plenty of white boards - Exposed brick, natural wood, etc... think "warm" - Tables for communal eating #devdiscuss

I think it depends on the person and exact environment. My office is an open set up, but there are walls between rows/cubes. The walls between rows are high (two shelves high) and between cubes are shorter. It's not that bad #devdiscuss

I work in an open office environment, and quite frankly, it's very difficult for me. I'm very reactive to noise. I work next to the office entrance so when deliveries come, they see me first. I'm right outside the break room and main conference space. #DevDiscuss
  • richburroughs Apr 24 @ 9:31 PM EDT
I have yet to see any credible rationalization for open offices, besides that they’re cheap. That’s why companies use them, it’s not about fueling collaboration. It’s such a terrible experience to work in them yet companies keep doing it. #DevDiscuss

  • KyleStratis Apr 24 @ 9:31 PM EDT
Having been in a number of configurations, the thing that truly makes it is the people. I had the best productivity and UX for lack of better term when the people were right - fun, curious, and oriented to the same goal. When those are off, so is the environment. #devdiscuss

  • DanFellini Apr 24 @ 9:39 PM EDT
To be honest, in an open space, I feel like more of an outcast than I would if I had an office with a door mostly open. To maintain concentration, most days I just have to wear headphones 90% of the time. I never hear what's going on in the day-to-day. #devdiscuss
