Good evening! We are a week away from #ILA18 in Austin, TX! The focus of tonight’s #ILAchat, hosted by our featured changemakers @BraveEducator, @colleen_cruz, and @MattRKay, is to help conference goers prepare for their experience.
#ILA18 presenters: The last 15 minutes of our #ILAchat is reserved for you to talk about your sessions, speaking events, or book signings. We know the questions might prompt answers about your events, which we welcome, but please keep the questions in mind when answering.
Hello! So excited to be a part of this chat. I’m tweeting from Southern California where I’m visiting family (and first learned about changemaking) #ILAchat
I prepare for the conference with self-love - knowing that I can't be in every place at every time, but the connections that I make are equally as important as each session! #ilachat
Everyone please introduce yourself and let us know if#ILA18 is your first ILA conference or if you’ve been to one before—and which one! Remember to use #ILAchat in all your tweets to stay in the conversation.
I’m just incredibly excited about the prospect of meeting other educators committed to the power of literacy and what it can do to forge the change we seek in the world #ILAchat

Hi everyone! My name is Priscilla and I’m a former school librarian-turned- FT grad student pursuing a PhD in Literacy. I recently joined ILA and this will be my first ILA conference! So excited!! @ILAToday#ILA18#ilachat
Hi, everyone! Glad to join in for a bit this evening. I’m Tanny from Cincinnati, Ohio. Looking forward to returning to the ILA annual conference this year! #ILAchat
A1: Educators need to see themselves as changemakers so their students can see the same abilities in themselves. We have the power to change the world through each interaction we have with students. #ILAchat#ILA18
Tim'm AKA @braveeducator here. My first ILA. Excited to learn from the vets on ways I can connect various spheres of influence to build collective power for kids and communities who stand to gain the most from valuing literacy. #ILAchat
One who takes seriously the learning and development of kids and youth, or even adults, has to do so because they believe individual change can inspire collective, systemic, institutional change. Why else do tireless, if never thankless, work? #ILAchat
A1: When we see ourselves as changemakers we can enable that fire in our students and help them see the possibilities. It also allows us to break past the constraints and ignite change for better learning opportunities. #ilachat
A1: Educators are changemakers whether we are ready to admit this or not. We can use this power for good or for evil. Once we embrace the ways we change lives and even society, we can ensure that our influence is mindful. #ILAchat
Q1: We have to see ourselves as positive change makers as the first step towards actively combating the deliberate assault on our confidence that seems to come from all angles! #ILAchat
A1: Educators are such important change makers because we are at the front lines of the future *with* the future - our students. We should lead by example and be strong role models for Ss as well. The impact can have a lasting ripple effect. #ilachat
A1: We have the power in the classroom to listen to our students & bring the curriculum to life. We must see ourselves as changemakers so we can advocate for what students need. #ILAchat
Q1:Being a Changemaker reminds me of how significant my influence is on student success. As a Changemaker I must be self reflective of how my own behavior may impact each learner.
As an educator for 2 decades, the reminders that I’ve inspired hope, or sparked a career passion, is constant. It’s hard to imagine educators who don’t see themselves as changemakers. Deep down, most are invested in the world they wish to see through those they teach. #ILAchat
A2: I am a true believer in ‘the secret’: that what we think can shape our reality. When we have an open perspective and truly believe that what we do matters for the greater good, it changes the way we think and feel together in a learning community. #ILAchat#ILA18
Q4: Come to hear how to turn give a modern revision to an old favorite - think alouds to model reading comprehension. My session on think alouds on Sunday afternoon #ilachat
A2: Students are best motivated when they are empowered to feel they can change their surroundings for the better. One of the best motivators for excellence is to both identify and celebrate a student’s passion. #ILAchat#ILAchat
A2: When we acknowledge our roles as change makers it will be imperative that we collaborate in order to make meaningful and lasting change. When we collaborate with our students and colleagues our vision and abilities increase exponentially. #ILAchat
A2: A changemaker mentality assumes that change can be had! There is a pervasive feeling of status quo in many schools and contents (Hello, canon! Looking at you.). A changemaker mentality means that you assume that things can always be better. And they can. #ILAChat#ILA18
A2: A change maker mentality is flexible - it shows students, colleagues, parents - that where we are doesn’t have to be where we’ll be. We can be more inclusive, more loving, more efficient, more daring. We don’t have to suffer generational curses. #ILAchat
A1: I'm passionate about the power of stories to transform the world, and educators are in a unique and frontline position to see that happen in so many ways. Narratives (whether individual or collective) are always changing, We need to always expand idea of stories #ILAchat
Feel free to chime in with questions for our cohosts or to offer tips, tricks, and recommendations for how to have the best #ILA18 Conference experience. #ILAchat
A2: It opens up to doors for important conversations about current practices and provides perspective of the direction where we should be heading. #ilachat
A1: When we see ourselves as changemakers we can enable that fire in our students and help them see the possibilities. It also allows us to break past the constraints and ignite change for better learning opportunities. #ilachat
A2: I believe that a change maker mentality is empowering - it sets the standard that change is possible and that change is a good thing. It’s crucial for Ss to understand that they have the power to make a difference. #ilachat
I’m Cornelius from Brooklyn & I’m dropping in to #ILAchat because @colleen_cruz, @MattRKay & @BraveEducator are here! Before I consider changemaking, I always want to ask “Who are the people already doing the work & what can I learn from them?” I’ve learned lots from these three!
I think Dewey addresses this when he said ‘The self is not something ready-made, but something in continuous formation through choice of action’. By adapting this mentality of making change and encouraging our learning communities to do the same we increase empowerment #ILAchat
You speak of the real empowerment students can feel with a teacher can connect what drives and motivates students to the systems that enable that change. We too often look at these as two separate processes, rather than symbiotic. Empowered students do better! #ILAchat
A2: A change maker mentality is flexible - it shows students, colleagues, parents - that where we are doesn’t have to be where we’ll be. We can be more inclusive, more loving, more efficient, more daring. We don’t have to suffer generational curses. #ILAchat
A2: Change is a constant and if we embrace that mentality than we can learn so much more by trying new strategies, using new media, listening more attentively to new ideas, changing our own perceptions/perspectives #ILAchat
They absolutely do! So many systems in education are designed to disenfranchise students. We have to do active, constant work to undo or counteract those systems and to rebuild a sense of agency and ability in our students. #ILAchat
A3: I just saw that @MrSchuReads will be at #ILA18 - I can’t wait to see him!! Also looking forward to one of my favorite authors @ggmccall and the networking opportunities! #ILAchat
A3: EVERYTHING! I cannot wait to return to the Edcamp, hope to learn more about the ILA standards and just soak up the energy and learning. Of course, I’d love to meet as many educators as I can in my session on virtual literacy coaching! #ILAchat#ILA18
Love the idea of what we can learn from other already doing innovative literacy work. Too often people are reinventing wheels. Let's be generous with best & promising practices. Let's also sort out better knowledge management so that these practices are easier to find. #ILAchat

#ILAchat A3 I intend to choose some sessions where the topics and presenters are new to me. #ILA18 is a great place to step out from the known and into the new! @ILAtoday
Q3: This is my first (hopefully of many) ILA conferences - I’m looking forward especially to sessions about classroom conversation. Eager to learn. Iron sharpens Iron! #ILAchat
Jumping in late Lisa aka Mrs. G #ILA18 Everyone! If I could clone myself to attend multiple sessions I would! Wish everyone @Mitchell_Elem was joining me!#booknerd 📚 ❤️ #ILAchat
#ilachat I'm a teacher educator in Kansas and I'm currently reading Unwritten The Story of a Living System: A Pathway to Enlivening Education. Many interesting ideas to mull over.
Hey, #ILAchat -- Yesterday, maybe, I saw a summer reading book list that I think is yours. I opened it and was disappointed to see THE SECRET PROJECT. Reasons for my concern here: https://t.co/rEUxXXX2KL
A3 - I’m most looking forward to reuniting with old friends and taking in some great sessions (like @MattRKay, @BraveEducator, @MisterMinor ). The line-up for this conference is so incredible I’m going to need roller skates. #ILAchat
A changemaker mentality recognizes how hard our work can be. It acknowledges that sometimes platitudes like “never give up” and “stay positive” can be damaging to those who have already given so much. Part of changemaking is recognizing work that has already been done. #ilachat
I'm super excited about the research sessions on Saturday; so much so that I'm having a hard time figuring out where to land. Being changemakers also requires that educators are on the forefront of research in the field. Who are your favorite researchers? #ILAchat
I'm Chris, an author in Austin excited to welcome folks to my home city for #ILA18. I love listening and learning even more than I do talking and teaching, so I'm glad to be here for #ILAchat and for the conference itself.
A4: I hope to connect with like-minded educators who share my passion for teaching, learning and coaching…..and then connect with just as many educators who can broaden my views, open my mind and help me read, write, think and learn from a different perspective. #ILAchat
I don't think I've joined one of your #ILAchat's before. I'm tribally enrolled at Nambé Pueblo, grew up there, became a classroom teacher and later, a professor in American Indian Studies. Stereotypes & biased images of Native ppl are everywhere.
A4: Whether I’m presenting or sitting in the audience, I know I will question some of my own most sacred ideas about education and hopefully revise, confirm or completely throw out a few. #ILAchat
A4: I’m hoping to connect with other educators at #ILA18, especially those I’ve “met” on Twitter. I’ve been using the app to plan out my days. And it’s on my to-do list to print new business cards. 🤔 #ilachat
A4: New learning focusing on Writing; New book titles; selfies with author heroes; strategically plan my route to sessions 😂;taking extra battery packs to keep devices charged ; Any other recs? #ILA18; #ILAChat
#ILAchat A4 I am preparing some #sketchnote templates for visual note taking during the sessions I attend. I’ll then have a visual, shareable record of my new learning! #ReadSketchThink@ILAtoday
A3: I'm a curriculum writer, and I've been focusing on anti-racist practices and empathy-builders, so I've been bookmarking all the sessions that have to do with that. I'm excited about "Changing Our World: Using the Superhero Genre to Fight Oppressive Discourse..." #ILAchat
I'm a tad more nervous about being a panelist at #ILA18 w/ my friend @EByard moderating. Just two years back our roles were reversed as we talked about equity the LGBTQ school to prison pipeline. How can inclusive literature inspire inclusive classrooms and schools? #ILAchat
In reply to
@LaraDeloza, @EduCourts, @DrStachowiak, @Jess5th, @AmyFabrikant, @i_am_kdp, @teachkate, @EByard, @GLSEN, @EByard
A2: EVERY educator is a change maker, but those who realize it are more intentional about their impact. More thoughtfulness = better results #ILAchat#ILA18
We have been experimenting with #sketchnotes as we participate in #CyberPD this summer. Can't wait to share our learning about sketchnoting with students this fall. #ILAchat
#ILAchat A4 I am preparing some #sketchnote templates for visual note taking during the sessions I attend. I’ll then have a visual, shareable record of my new learning! #ReadSketchThink@ILAtoday
Q5: Veteran conference goers: What advice would you give to an #ILA18 first timer? First timers: What questions do have about attending the conference? #ILAchat
#ILA18 Tip #2: If you're flying into Austin, bring a refillable water bottle. The airport has filtered Hydration Stations. Travelers: 1; expensive airport water: 0 #ilachat
I'm so eager to get over to the bookstore @marclamonthill created in Philly. I'm hopeful it's becoming a model for ways to reinvigorate and centralize lovers of books. #ILAchat
A4: I am really excited to learn about new texts and new ways to empower students. I am also constantly looking for ways that I can better serve and write curriculum for our students of color, and so I'm excited to learn and grow in that respect as well. #ILAchat
A5: We know attendees are always looking for things to do after hours outside the #ILA18 hall. Our Lit Lover’s Guide to Austin is a good start: https://t.co/gSn7naKwZA#ILAchat
A5: My top #ILA18 tips? Download the app, add your @Twitter handle to your name tag, bring business cards, attend the keynotes, plan for more time than you think in the exhibit hall and soak it all in! #ILAchat#ILA18
Q5: Veteran conference goers: What advice would you give to an #ILA18 first timer? First timers: What questions do have about attending the conference? #ILAchat
Important pre-reading for the #ILApanel moderated by @EByard . Appreciating the growing literature available about terms and definitions for gender identity. As a leader in the LGBTQ+ Education landscape, I humble myself to always be aware that there's more to learn. #ILAchat
A notebook, a laptop, a mobile device, water bottle and a chocolate or two! Make sure you have a QR reader on your phone for easy scanning of presentation resources at some sessions. #ILAchat
#ILAchat A5 My advice to #ILA18 first timers would be to let go of the urgency to be everywhere & see everyone. Remember to exhale. Take time to connect with others.Spend time in reflection. @ILAtoday
Q5. Get to your can't-miss sessions early. Crowds are unpredictable and once a room hits max capacity, no one gets in without someone coming out. This is how I missed @MisterMinor's impromptu sesh at @ILA16 in Boston. #ILAchat
A5 #ILAchat -- when you're at book booths, please ask for books by Native writers! At ALA last month, I was heartened to see a handful of bks; usually there are zero. When you find them, take photos and tweet the photos! Visibility makes a difference.
My laptop and OneNote! I keep my whole work life in one notebook with notes from professional texts, outlines for curriculum, notes from trainings, and resources. #ILAChat
That concludes the Q&A portion of our #ILAchat. We would now like to open the floor to any #ILA18 presenters who want to discuss their sessions. We encourage everyone to continue to share ideas and tips for conference through the week using #ILA18.
Another reason to download the #ILA18 app: Speakers often upload handouts or supplemental materials to the system, and they live in the app. Sometimes you'll want to pull them up during the session. Other times, save the handout for after the conference. #ILAchat
I'll be participating in 3 sessions. Saturday, 7/21, at 5 p.m., I'll be a panelist on How to Make a Kidlit List: Getting Into the Habit of Considering Who's Included--and Who's Left Out. @donalynbooks is moderating. #ILAchat#ILA18
Sunday, 7/22, at 10 a.m., I'm keynoting at the meeting of the Literacy & Social Responsibility Special Interest Group. It's a brand-new talk I've put together just for the occasion, called "Getting Better All the Time." #ILAchat#ILA18
And then all day Monday, 7/23, I'll be participating in Children's Literature Day, appearing twice on the Putting Books to Work: Early Reader panel with @nchurnin & @AdahNuchi, moderated by @dylanteut. #ILAchat#ILA18
Join my session on virtual literacy coaching Saturday at 3pm! Explore how to invite coaches into a coaching partnership, give lesson feedback through video tools and interactive documents, create coaching toolkits and provide personalized PD! #ILAchat#ILA18

#ILA18 Tip #3: Don't count on finding rogue plugs or charging stations. Invest in a good portable charger, one that plugs into the wall (so when you DO find a plug, you get a twofer). #ilachat
A notebook, a laptop, a mobile device, water bottle and a chocolate or two! Make sure you have a QR reader on your phone for easy scanning of presentation resources at some sessions. #ILAchat
Join us on Sunday morning to talk about How to Get the Best Bang for Your Books - Organizing Texts to Support Student Voice, Choice, and Development #ILAchat

Educators often congregate in open spaces, especially if there are chairs. There are a many chances for organic networking. Sessions that are listed as workshops often offer good opportunities as well. #Edcamp on Friday is perfect for that. #ILAchat
#ILAchat My Not Light, But Fire session will be about how - not why, which people of good will mostly agree on, but HOW - we can lead better race conversations in the classroom. Looking forward to building with you all! Also - there’s this book I wrote…
https://t.co/v2osQPTlAD
In addition to my Saturday morning sesh on how clever writers are more critical readers at 11:00 🤓 I’m also presenting with the always fabulous @JSerravallo on the dynamic role of reading/writing reciprocity at 1:00. 🖊📚#ILAchat
I'm so eager to get over to the bookstore @marclamonthill created in Philly. I'm hopeful it's becoming a model for ways to reinvigorate and centralize lovers of books. #ILAchat
Most book signings are now listed in the #ILA18 app. Click the Exhibitor tile, then Book Signings to see them listed and add them to your schedule. @AffinitoLit's is definitely there. #ILAchat

As an attendee, I'm looking forward to 3 sessions on Saturday:
General Session at 8 a.m.
Be a Changemaker: Using Picture Book Biographies... at 11 a.m.
Deconstructing Stories: How My Life... at 1 p.m. #ilachat#ILA18
Come see @LindaMRief and I talk about incorporating more low-stakes writing into our students lives with #QuickWrites 9 am Sunday Austin Convention Center, 8C - Theater. #ILA18#ILAchat
I'm on a panel re: Literacy and our LGBTQ+ students. In my work with @TeachforAmerica and on my board leadership w/ @WordPlayCincy I think lots about the relationship between "safe classrooms" and achievement. Safe isn't enough, if you never see yourself represented. #ILAchat
Come see @LindaMRief and I talk about incorporating more low-stakes writing into our students lives with #QuickWrites 9 am Sunday Austin Convention Center, 8C - Theater. #ILA18#ILAchat
And I’ll be signing my hot-off-the-presses new book, Writers Read Better: Nonfiction at the @CorwinPress booth right after 1:00 presentation ends on Saturday. It would be lovely if you stopped by and said hi. 👋🏼 #ILAChat
#ILA18 Tip #4: Go to ILA Central as soon as you can to pick up your free, collectible hashtag pin. We're only giving them out there this year and we ordered a limited quantity. #ILAchat
Visitors to Austin during #ILA18, I can't recommend highly enough a visit to @BookPeople, not far from the convention center. And I *especially* recommend you check out the Modern First Library display in the children's section on the 2nd floor. https://t.co/xh8b9vivXT#ilachat

Edus can be the change makers of our generation as we purposefully walk alongside the children & youth of our nation as they stand up for what they hold to be true, just & equitable for all. We can hold space for youth, listen, amplify their voices & take bold actions. #ILAchat
And I'm signing #mglit THE BOY, THE BOAT, AND THE BEAST at the #ILA18 Publishers Spotlight Saturday 11am with @SSEdLib! Can't wait. And I'll have SWAG. Looking forward to seeing you #ilachat
❤️✊🏾🙂... Another lesson that I’ve learned at @ILAToday:
If ANY conference isn’t speaking to your needs, find a hallway or empty room & convene some thought partners to talk about & DO what matters to you.
Some of my most powerful learning has happened this way.#ILAchat
Q5. Get to your can't-miss sessions early. Crowds are unpredictable and once a room hits max capacity, no one gets in without someone coming out. This is how I missed @MisterMinor's impromptu sesh at @ILA16 in Boston. #ILAchat
You are so good at this. It’s one of the many things I’ve learned from you @MisterMinor - ‘If a thing you want isn’t happening, make it happen’. #ilachat
