welcome! is one of the best chats!
I'm with you...R1: Twitter
R1: As an administrator, it was key to learn to focus on what’s best for kids and not listen to the
nay-sayers
R1 Utilizing formative assessment in digital ways like
It sure was! Good to see familiar faces.
Hello . George here. Will be in and out this evening but excited to see what and have going on tonight
Hyperdocs-I was hooked after they were used to deliver content during Google Teacher Academy. Live by them now & see it spreading
R1: Connecting with other professionals, especially places like - saw it here, continued, growing professionally!!!!
yes! I'm so good at wait time now
A1. modeled his process for creating and presenting engaging keynotes. Eye-opening.
Hello George! Great you can join in!
Yes, it is! I tell other educators across the country to follow ! https://t.co/y7KxHWpAye
welcome! is one of the best chats!
R1 - It seems simple but using the phrase "screens down" or "courtesy mode" w/learners when attn is needed.
Have you animated them yet?
IT’S MY FAVORITE GEORGE! well, he’s the only George I know. [and he is my boss] BUT STILL!
Me too. and got to me at a conference several years ago and it has stuck! https://t.co/eeIyCy5JHn

So cool, -I love how you've really developed your own network and chats! launch pad! Paying it forward!
Me too!!! Very inspired & have been hooked since!
welcome! From one fine state to another
R1: another how to: high quality literature and helping Ss choose interesting books to create high interest questions
sadly, no. Now, I'll have to push myself to the next level
R1: Not very tech sexy, but as AP, calling P's on speakerphone w/S's present has proven many times over to be a Best Practice.
Those little cues can be lifesavers in the classroom! https://t.co/KHQzyRCCi0
R1 - It seems simple but using the phrase "screens down" or "courtesy mode" w/learners when attn is needed.
Forgot it was Thursday. Kevin from Indianapolis Pike checking in
R1-Flipping content for staff. Learned from awesome
R1: consistent, predictable information on a variety of platforms for all the pockets of our school community.
R1 ditching textbooks and creating
Ha! You are TOO Kind! We learned together, my lady!
You can be an honorary Hoosier (as long as you're not pulling for Chattanooga in the NCAA right now!).
we have to create that time, w/o it Ts become the talkers and Ss only the receivers
YES! That is a great one!
Yes! You'll never regret making students a part of the conversation. https://t.co/DnQeDtkJw5
R1: Not very tech sexy, but as AP, calling P's on speakerphone w/S's present has proven many times over to be a Best Practice.
Feeling the love!! You all inspire me daily!!
A1: I was shown online curriculum back in 2002 by my technology integrations educator in MSD Wayne. Never have gone away from
agreed! I love asking questions to which I don't know the answer. We learn together!
great post on using silence, its a huge piece to any successful learning environment, silence can = reflection
R1: My principal's LunchNLearn to use Twitter for PD, PLN building, seek out teaching ideas & new finds.
Amen! Hoosiers! https://t.co/yUXSz132tF
You can be an honorary Hoosier (as long as you're not pulling for Chattanooga in the NCAA right now!).
R1 so many to choose from! Ultimately, the ability to listen, learn, empathize, grow and resolve.
I think I know a guy who knows a thing or two about ditching some textbooks https://t.co/UTbXyZnRik
R1 ditching textbooks and creating
Marianne!!! So great you are joining in!
A1: Also integrating 1:1 into the classroom. Waiting for my school to roll it out now. I'm more than ready
Yes! It is about providing opportunities for student control over time, place, path & space!
Q2 How is modeling a powerful practice in our schools?
Calling all educators! We’re currently 18 min into the chat on modeling for others!
The water is warm…jump on in!
R1: I put on my last speaker profile that after 20+ years taking from others, it was time to pay that back to newer teachers
Model messing up with the new tech, and trying again...and again...and again....
A1: PBA, PBIS. I could keep going....
R2: Modeling is practicing what you preach. Builds traction. Builds accountability.
me too! I screen cast so much now. Super easy when I can't be there in person. Or when Ss/Ts want to review
R2: As an admin, it helps with teacher buy-in when rolling out new initiatives/tech
R2: We can talk all we want, but modeling is a much stronger message!
R2: Modeling is powerful especially when it comes to risk-taking. Admin out of comfort zone leads to Ts & Ss out of theirs.
R2: we have to model for Ss lifelong learning and curiosity, w/o it we stay in the past w/ no path to success
YES! We need to model the continual process of trying, changing, and trying again.
R2: Ss will model their behavior after Ts, Ts after admin. Action is always more powerful than words. WALK THE TALK!
R2: Modeling works for schools with people that want to raise the bar. It is getting past the
R2: Sounds simple, but it we can't do it, why would Ss be able to? Organic learning by example
Yes, that is so critical for Ss to see how Ts respond!
R2 Ts endeavoring to prune beloved practices to keep the blossoms, cut the dying leaves benefits from one modeling the process
exactly! complacent administrators lead to complacent teachers
R2: This reminds me of an old post! "Model, Model, Model...because Practice Makes Possible!" https://t.co/tqTrMJqKk6
Agreed. I will never expect my Ts to do something I'm not willing to do myself!
R2 Modeling what is expected is a culture setter-it promotes we're in this together mentality
R2-Model one class roll out for them, give them confidence to do the next 3. Mistakes, fixes, and learner engagement.
R1: for me, inquiry-style science experiments.
R2: seeing is believing. Witnessing the magic is more impactful than simple description. Ts need to model from your best Ts
so true! Sometimes our schools are not safe places to risk failure for our kiddos. We must model risk taking!
R2 Ts can identify powerful things and implement them well in the classroom! Good ideas spread quickly!
R2: Thoroughly sharing your metacognition helps Ss learn how to critically think
R2: also, it's so inspiring to see others get excited about something! If it looks fun & engaging, I want to do it!
R2: The act of modeling that which you expect to see in your building builds trust, buy-in & support!
R2: also modeling reflection, its a huge piece in growing as a learner, making a plan and figuring out next steps
What are you going to roll out? iPads? Chromebooks? MacBooks?
or if we ask Ss to do it, why do we not see the value in doing it?
R2: modeling great because it gives a visual to go with a theoretical idea. Wouldnt have tried inquiry as a T if I hadn't as a S
Every act builds our culture! https://t.co/MPT0SDwnYO
R2 Modeling what is expected is a culture setter-it promotes we're in this together mentality
R2 My Ts made fun of my use of a few years ago. Now, we can’t live without it!
Everyone here knows the power of reflecting and growing with others. Imagine if all teachers in your building were here!
It's admin's job to make sure the best ideas spread; Ss need access to the best regardless of their T https://t.co/O9Q1Tl7EgL
R2 Ts can identify powerful things and implement them well in the classroom! Good ideas spread quickly!
R2: Modeling in the elem is critical. For k-2 students it is important to model the right and wrong ways to set expectations
So true, . Modeling does promote confidence. Even better when it's part of a process and develops new experts
A1: I started Sketchnoting after I saw others using it. Even though I can't draw. I saw the power in it
R2 for Ss learning writing, sharing dev strategies, then modeling the process provides an ex. for Ss to emulate for early success
R2: Also, modeling bolsters others to try because security in numbers. Model = Let's all try this together and I will go first.
Wow! This chat is rocking! Q3 coming up!
Absolutely! Actions speak louder than words! Great leaders don't TELL you how it's done...they SHOW you the Way!
"Modeling" without creating a reason for ownership becomes "demonstrating". Don't forget to connect with the purpose.
No kidding. Lots of new faces! :)
Great point, ! This is exactly what I get to in the digital native argument. You have to be a digital learner first
R2: For me, it's catchy.I see, get curious, start clicking around & it just evolves from there.Spreads to Ss
Awesome point!!! https://t.co/BJqCN92dGV
"Modeling" without creating a reason for ownership becomes "demonstrating". Don't forget to connect with the purpose.
Absolutely. I just don't like the thought process that HS students need laptops/keyboards to write papers Need Creativity
, it usually does ROCK. The best evening of the week.
Q3: In your journey, what does it mean to “model for others?”
I'm so proud of your curiosity and your passion for trying new things! You are rockin' this year!
R2 as Admin, modeling a genuine growth mindset,owning mistakes,being authentic & positive everyday,being transparent& accessible
R3-Modeling means taking a risk. Putting yourself out there, sharing with purpose so that it spreads to others
R3: It means connecting with educators outside of my district through the awesome chat
R3: modeling means being excited about the new, reflective about the failure, transparent in everything
Rosie Brandt from Angola, jumping in a little late
R3-MUST be willing to put yourself and ur classroom out there for others all the time! No limitations, no scheduled visits.
R2 unfortunately I don't see a whole lot of modeling going on at my school...but I believe the winds of change are upon us
R3 walk the walk- and when you stumble, own it, learn from it, and get back on that walk!
R3: This means I better learn more than enough to be proficient in using in the classroom, then explain to whomever is using.
I couldn't agree with that more. I see the positive idea that Ss need choice, but Ts are them limited to web tools
R3: In my journey, modeling means helping Admins & Ts learn to grow as Digital Leaders in their districts! I LOVE it!
R3: I think modeling is at the core of . It is the best way to start shifting a school’s culture
R3: not sure, but I do know the 'others' need to be invested in what your modeling :)
Q3: Show that you're willing to take risks, try something new, share ideas, and continue to learn
Rosie! Awesome you could join in!
R3 "model for others" to me is share, share and share some more.
R3 Modeling to me means I hope to share my passion about life-long learning with others, not just students.
You're exactly right. Being open and honest is key.
BAM! https://t.co/azd4Qk1gMx
R3 walk the walk- and when you stumble, own it, learn from it, and get back on that walk!
R3: it is a risk to be in front of peers, but it is payment for those that did for you, plus you grow from sharing & connecting
And showing Ts or Ss best practices. However, sometimes modeling is allowing others to explore and fail at times. Be supportive
Putting yourself out there is the step that so many forget! Jump out...meet others..and grow your PLN! So rewarding!
Yes! Ensure teachers have access to other teachers. https://t.co/chntVAbbuZ
R2 as Admin, modeling a genuine growth mindset,owning mistakes,being authentic & positive everyday,being transparent& accessible
R3 Sometimes modeling for others means patience & persistence. Asking why something isn't being picked up & adjusting my approach
R3: I think it’s HUGE when admin admit mistakes / growth points in front of their staff. Why pretend to be perfect?
R3: Showing staff and students that we are willing to push ourselves and learn new ideas and concepts.
That's right! "If it is worth creating, it is worth sharing!"
A3: Modeling to me means reaching out and taking the risk to be different to try new things
Growing a PLN, giving what you can to others, gathering ideas and help from anyone willing.
agreed! Ts are terrified to present to other Ts but it's beneficial to everyone!
R2: If admin doesn't model what they expect from Ts in PD & elsewhere, what message does that send? https://t.co/u9Ld6iKUzS
R3: I hear a lot about risk. Modeling and falling flat on your face can be powerful to get others to trust in your leadership!
R3: don't encourage anyone to try something that I wouldn't try in my own practice. Never "you should . . ." always "I might . . "
You mean we have to model learning? Now there's a good idea. :)
R3 You have to do what you love and are curious about, so that the people around feel free to do the same even if it's not tech.
A3. If we are to all be master learners...we must not be afraid to model risk-taking and failure. This leads to innovation.
we are all when we share. Can't be a lone wolf on an island when teaching
Q4 In your journey, what are some barriers to modeling for others?
Ts are terrified, think about how our Ss feel, must open comm. skill, needs to be modeled https://t.co/RiEQ6yn3Nh
agreed! Ts are terrified to present to other Ts but it's beneficial to everyone!
We are all in the "learning business", no matter our role. Modeling is learning.
A3: When I run a PD session or workshop I must model how to utilize the tools, & more importantly how to engage Ss effectively
Looks like I can squeeze one more question in
R3:We must model and push the Envelope or complacency will follow. We have to get past this culture mediocrity in education
A3: Putting yourself out there with Admin support is HUGE! Taking risk and willingness to share and lead.
R4: Some teachers unfortunately feel like they’re done learning and have no room to grow. In 20 years I’ll still be learning!
R4: It's awfully hard to model when you can't get their attention! That would be my greatest barrier.
R4: Time and a willingness to learn from others! https://t.co/lqQmLqc2LG
Q4 In your journey, what are some barriers to modeling for others?
We need to support each other in our journey! Better together!
R3Try something new, jump on the train&let it roll.Put a few hooks up around the room, let Ss discover/wonder.
R3 very important to model commitment to our values &families away from school. Disproportionate commitment to work is unhealthy
R4 One of the biggest barriers I've experienced/observed is lack of support/resources Looks good, but how do I implement it?
R4: you always have people who are scared of integration of new methods. You have to grow your . Buy in is key
R4: The idiocy of “Administering” things like ISTEP+ and the amount of time it takes from true learning is the barrier!
R4 "Doing it this way has always worked just fine."
R4: Time is a major issue, there's already so much expected of teachers.
Despite coming in late, as an education major, I am learning a lot by following . ...check it out! 😃
A4: Huge barrier is "Yes, but..." reaction. I'm a "yes and..." person w/ new ideas & tech. Tough 2 understand their PoV
I feel everyone w/o a growth mindset should read Innovative Mindset by or Mindset by Carol Dweck.
Agreed. When folks feel like they are up to their ears in the work it's hard to slow things down. https://t.co/K0KfSgGcUw
R4: It's awfully hard to model when you can't get their attention! That would be my greatest barrier.
R4 I am a younger new T, I love things that are new, diff & tech. That is scary for some older Ts who are set in their ways
R4 if the relationship isn't there between model& beneficiary then the example will not resonate. Relationships at the center.
R4: My barrier was initially knowing I had something to offer, that others wanted to hear
ah, that touches on my R3-what will it take to get their attention? What is it that matters to the directed audience?
R4: Modeling positive attitude, energy, enthusiasm & sense of humor are critical to inspiring others who are hesitant to jump in!
I think most of our barriers are perceived...insecurity, fear...
or someone to show them there are positive ways to responded to failure
Glad you are here. You are on the right path being connected already.
A4: When you have naysayers, the culture of mediocrity grows. Find the to
We can't expect our s's to push their learning without having the same drive with our own PD! https://t.co/bRPRfBf5ls
R4: Some teachers unfortunately feel like they’re done learning and have no room to grow. In 20 years I’ll still be learning!
R4 adherence to the mantra "we have always done it that way, and it works". Status quo is a luxury in educational equity.
Yes! #1 tip I get from is focus on your best people!
R4 Modeling is very different than doing it for someone. Modeling invigorates. The other way exhausts.
A4: FEAR but being positive and knowledgeable is empowering to lead and model.
R4: no support from above...
R4: A lot of Ts mention the eval/rubric and "something failing" as an excuse to not try new things. Fear of failure.
A4: If it is important, you make time to integrate into your classroom.
We need to be more creative in ways to open up time for Ts. Find a way to give them time to collaborate.
So true . This and what tweeted reminded me that we can be own of greatest barrier! (guilty)
Great convo! Q5 coming up!
Thanks for adding to my reading list.
It'll take even more modeling! Every day I get more buy in from Ts. THEY are modeling and bringing more in https://t.co/wfcnkPu9Iu
ah, that touches on my R3-what will it take to get their attention? What is it that matters to the directed audience?
Catching up on this chat. Khrisna, pre-service Student Teaching Brooklyn
without communication our ss are left with little more than memorized facts, nothing good from that
It's my first year at WEBO, but that's one thing I've focused on
T's are great at "borrowing" ideas that work. Do what you do well & if it's successful it will be modeled and remodeled.
Reapectfully-are their practice scary to you? Empathy requisite for good relationships, modeling https://t.co/f95N09XvK1
R4 I am a younger new T, I love things that are new, diff & tech. That is scary for some older Ts who are set in their ways
Agreed. We can't find more time, so let's think about how we use the time we have!
Our admins took lunch duty, so Ts have that time every day.
I am scared of a lot of things (bees, skunks, mountain lions, sinkholes, head lice) but I am not afraid of failure! Charge!
R4: My barrier is myself. The excuses I come up with to not move forward.
R4: Barrier for me is worrying if I have everything perfect before modeling.
so true! There are way more perceived barriers out there than real ones (Also guilty!)
Learned the phrase "borrowing brilliance" from friend - love it!
We created PLC's by bringing in substitute Ts to cover T's supervision per. This released Ts for collaboration
Yes! Maybe we can't take things off the plate, but can we better organize the plates we have?
Throw some pyrotechnics in there and blow up some textbooks. No one will notice if you didn't get it perfect. :)
Q5: How do we overcome those barriers?
And if successful, talk about it a lot: informal PD at its finest!
I see new teachers lacking the ability to integrate new ideas. Some of us who are seasoned veterans are pushing the envelope
R4The NaySayers, but don't let them get you down, positivity is catchy!New paths= Lucy in the Wardrobe fun
Chris, you're at WeBo? I'm a North Montgomery grad ... I had a few swim meets at WeBo!
Love to see Admins demonstrate their commitment to Ts moving forward.
Glad to hear that. Sometimes, seasoned veterans are less likely to take risks and try new things. https://t.co/lPMqqJz5i5
I see new teachers lacking the ability to integrate new ideas. Some of us who are seasoned veterans are pushing the envelope
Now I need a sub so I can read all these books.
A5: Grow from within. Grow slowly. Nurture and make it to where Ss talk about it all over
R5: We overcome barriers by persevering with positive enthusiasm! To turn your vision into reality, don't give up!
Small world! You may be interested to know we're doing a book study on Ditch That Textbook this month at WEBO.
As always, awesome chat, but time for me to scoot - thanks for the energy & motivation & positive modeling
R5: I surround myself with others who support the mission. We build upon each other & lift each other to new heights!
Convincing ourselves that it's better to put ourselves out there than it is to wait on perfect (never) is so tough
Whaaaaat?!?!? That's awesome! Let me know if you'd like me to Skype in sometime. I'd love to meet everyone.
Thank you for joining in John!!
R5 TI ime as barrier means rethinking how you are dividing your time. Rreshape when you can't remove things
I think it is a combo of everything
A5: Recruit those u can 2 the dark side, others will eventually have to follow or stand alone in the spotlight. Kids will push 2.
Good is the enemy of great.
Q5. Simply put: know the way, show the way, grow the way. PD, collaboration, growth mindset.
R5: Continue to read and be inspired by great ideas when you feel stuck! Look to others in our PLN for wisdom & guidance!
R5: If self-consciousness is a barrier, being brave in small chunks and celebrating victories. Finding someone to help.
I think continue to take risks & modeling help others to see things work and change is ok. https://t.co/4fQzAsQ10j
A4: When you have naysayers, the culture of mediocrity grows. Find the to
R5 Work harder to share S's digital work w/ other Ts. You can't just hang it in the hall anymore, but product= buy-in for some Ts.
Here are the magic words. "What can you learn to do differently to help your students succeed?"
I want to create a "Culture of Greatness" in my class, my school, my community, my world. You model it in class and it grows
R5-Surround yourself w/ positivity, inspiration. Keep kids at the heart of what you do. Modeling will always fall into place!
R5 Perception can be a barrier-I saw different tweets referencing time in the business/age as a factor. Fix: don't assume anything
R5 Focusing on what's best for students (I bet someone else typed this response quicker than I did)
Agree w/you both about new Ts ... but once they get their bearings, they have great potential to innovate.
Q6 right around the corner!
R5: Showing how some new ideas, such as new technology, can make Ts life easier and more organized.
R5: Just keep modeling/being positive & Roll Tide. Share out ideas/pics. Invite Ts to Skype, buddy classes etc
Q6 What is 1 practice you hope to promote by modeling it?
I'm trying to pair Ts that have similar goals & similar starting points so they have someone to lean on & learn with.
Late to the party, but hello ! I just read questions at an academic team meet!
I love it when tech can make my life easier & more organized! Giddy inside!
R6: I want to always encourage and model reflection and failure
R5:never assume "they already know that"
R6: I hope my willingness to try new things will serve as a model for those around me!
R6: and lifelong learning!!!
R6: Using Twitter to personalize professional development.
R6 Offering Ss choices in how they demonstrate learning.
R6 I beg of you...join me in this: Model responsible use of images/copyright Stop doing what's easy 'cause everyone does it anyway
R6: By using Twitter to grow, teachers are catching on at my school and students see positive social media
-win-win
R6 The willingness to always learn new things and support others in the process!
R6: I plan to continue modeling how & why Admins & T's should be using Hyperdocs & Screencasting to accomplish amazing tasks!
R6: I've started PD Badges with my Ts. Badges are conversation starters. Ts are sharing with Ts. It's growing!
A6: I'm trying to create a personalized PD program where Ts can choose their starting point. Modeling differentiated instruction.
A6: I love modeling Performance Based Assessments and trying to develop ways of increasing technology into this
R6 Allowing learners (adult ones and non-adult ones) voice and choice as they learn and grow
Agree! Canva is my absolute favorite tool to use to create images!
R6: Tweet out pics of Ss successes/trials / explorations.
Yes! Always amazed at what Ss already know how to do, but equally amazed at what they don't.
A3- Modeling in your work ethic and in not giving up on your students especially when they are struggling.
Please Please Please encourage Ts to allow Ss to create the screencasts. Let them demonstrate their understanding
Come on Cliff! Drawings is way better! :)
I am aware of several eLearning specialists that have created personalized PD programs.
Oh yes! Just ask Our 3rd Graders were all rock stars at Screencasting! Love it!
R6. model how to:leverage tech for various purposes, not be afraid to fail and find solutions to personal and global issues
Love the Hyperdocs to create engaged lessons.
Love 'em both! ANd super love when Ss use them!
That is an awesome practice! Our Ss LOVE sharing their learning through screencasts!
I'm going to need another Google Draw lesson!
Yes, I am becoming quite addicted to Google Drawings now! Spectacular collaborative tool for everyone!
A6: Teachers also have to work on increasing understanding of data driven decision making. Must work to help Ss
R6-I just want to keep modeling positivity, trying something new to help Ss be innovative, creative, collaborative
you must share this hyper Docs at the next tech integration meeting @ WCCS
A6: to model my willingness to try new things, to jump in and help. To continue to encourage the use of tech w my Ss
That's one thing I wish we could access on iPads. Such a great tool for creating.
Yes, of course! What was I thinking, not including you! You were just way ahead!
Just had a thought. What about modeling how Ss can teach US how to do stuff. Now there is a powerful moment in education
What a fun activity we did in https://t.co/quTpdWcUoJ
Yes, I am becoming quite addicted to Google Drawings now! Spectacular collaborative tool for everyone!
Q6: What is 1 practice you hope to promote by modeling it?
YES!!! https://t.co/X1DP86dxsD
Just had a thought. What about modeling how Ss can teach US how to do stuff. Now there is a powerful moment in education
Best screencasting tool is on iPad. Nothing you can't do with it.
