As a reading specialist, I collaborate with teachers as well as students. I’ve learned not to take the hints personally. Someone may be having a bad day and just needs another chance. #BFC530
There’s a lot here. Listening, being present in meetings. Closing my device when not needed or not having my phone out to distract my attention. I’m a work in progress for sure. #bfc530
It’s an on-going challenge...but as Principal of a fairly large school I try to learn all students by name...much more powerful & impactful when you can greet students by name in the morning when they enter the building! Still not there yet though. #BFC530
Time management! I strive every day to make the most of the time I have, staying organized, making time for work and for play, finding balance 😊 #bfc530
Word choice: "We" instead of "I", the magical word "...yet", "productive" instead of "busy", "let me think about it" instead of "no". It's amazing what a difference a word can make! #bfc530

It is my nature to want to fix things for students and teachers. But, over the years I have learned to allow for certain levels of struggle in learning. The rewards for the learner are so much greater once they overcome them. #bfc530
Wait time. I asked a question & then when no one said anything right away, I often jumped in to answer or rephrase. Now I wait longer; Ss need thinking time. Let the uncomfortable silence just hang there. Someone will likely respond - they just need time.

I’ve modified in that I no longer say yes to all of the things - meaning committees and commitments and speaking gigs etc. I try to choose one or two and focus. #bfc530
Except that you’ve done it all day and it can be exhausting. It’s hard to reframe all day and night. I find I need more time alone than I can possibly have. #bfc530

Exactly...a well thought out why. I used to say "no" too quickly, then think things through & decide, hmmm, this is possible. But by then the damage was done. People stop sharing ideas if they fear a "no". #bfc530
When I was a young teacher I was intimidated by my admins stopping in, now I welcome it. They get to see all the great work and thoughts coming from my students #bfc530
I’ve found that when I do “honey bee 🐝 “ conferences (a couple minutes or so) & share a glow/grow with them, it holds me more accountable. My Ss will say “you didn’t visit my flower YET 😊” #BFC530

The universe (inside my body) has given me so many reminders about nutrition and self care this year that this summer’s work is mainly to restore my health! #bfc530

I try to be very aware of student talk time vs my talk time. I encourage Ss to respond in complete sentences. I also make sure they have plenty of time to share with a partner or team. Ss learn so much from each other! #bfc530
As an admin it is hard to get out of the office due to the demands but if I dont get to the classrooms, then I dont know what my teachers and students need. #bfc530
I'm intentionally going to bed earlier on Friday nights so I can get up even earlier on Saturday morning to go to McDonalds to get more work done. #bfc530

I’m a Reading Specialist in an ES since 2007. Before that, I taught 1st & 3rd grade. When I conference with Ss, I have a checklist with things I’m focusing on for the task, then I pick a “glow” (strength) & “grow” (something to work on). I also include reflective ?s #BFC530

Morning, #bfc530. Two biggies: 1. Framing directions not negatively. Er, positively. For example, "Remember to..." vs. "Don't forget to..." 2. Standards-based grading shift in practice & grade book feels like perpetual modification.
Love #1. I really work to frame directions/reminders in the positive too. When I get a handout or hear another saying "don't" I reframe it in my mind. #bfc530
Yes! I use the following principles w/ my Ss (& loved ones) 1) Presume innocence; 2) Questions before quick judgements. These are especially essential given we often don’t know what Ss may have experienced before school...what they may be dealing w/ outside of school time #bfc530
