2 things for me: first, I’m excited to see to what extent we continue to connect with students outside of class. Second, I’m excited to see the new creative things educators can come up with. The sky is the limit #utedchat

#utedchat I've heard about Skype for education and I'm curious to play with it in the classroom

I'm excited to see consolidation of open-source content and improved student and teacher access to such content. NewsELA is a fantastic resource and the ability to alter reading levels helps in those small ways that wind up mattering a lot. #utedchat
  • MathDavidUtah Jun 20 @ 11:11 PM EDT
I see true personalized learning for all students with teachers using tech tools that facilitate that process. It is within our reach. #utedchat

Q2 In the next decade, what changes are you most concerned about? #utedchat
  • LynetteYorgason Jun 20 @ 11:12 PM EDT
100% I am excited to see virtual reality become something commonly used, but I'm excited mostlky because I think it's the next step to augmented reality in the classroom and I think that has SO many possibilities! #UTEDchat
  • marcihouseman Jun 20 @ 11:12 PM EDT
A1: I am most excited to see teachers leveraging technology to maximize their instructional time and provide personalized learning experiences for students. #utedchat
  • Profesora_A Jun 20 @ 11:13 PM EDT

  • vb_kristin Jun 20 @ 11:13 PM EDT
A2 - I think I'm most concerned about technology in general. Although I love it and try to use it to enhance learning in my classroom, I too often see people using technology just to say they are. This is counter productive. #utedchat
  • anderbrooke Jun 20 @ 11:14 PM EDT
A2: I'm always concerned about the claims made by ed tech companies, especially around personalized learning. I'm glad to see there is a greater emphasis on vetting tools. #utedchat
  • NanaTeacher22 Jun 20 @ 11:14 PM EDT
Kathy from #westwendover NV, teach HS Govt and History, mind if I jump in to the chat #utedchat
  • MathDavidUtah Jun 20 @ 11:15 PM EDT
A2: what concerns me most is that there may be no change. Politics and backlashes against promising educational innovation have stymied us in the past. We must get past all that. #utedchat
  • DeborahGatrell1 Jun 20 @ 11:15 PM EDT
A2: Exactly what Brooke said. Just because Ed tech folks say it's good doesn't mean it is. It's especially annoying when tech folks tell us how to teach when they've spent no time as teachers. Ugh. Beware the shiny baubles! #UTEdchat
    • anderbrooke Jun 20 @ 11:14 PM EDT
A2: I'm always concerned about the claims made by ed tech companies, especially around personalized learning. I'm glad to see there is a greater emphasis on vetting tools. #utedchat
  • Profesora_A Jun 20 @ 11:15 PM EDT
A2: #utedchat my biggest concern will be keeping up with the upcoming changes. Administrators are govern by policy and budgets that can sometimes block progress and innovation.
  • russellchasew Jun 20 @ 11:15 PM EDT
Not sure if any specifics, but with the new wave of innovative technology in the classroom, I don’t want to see educators implanting technology as a compliance thing, but rather using it to have a meaningful purpose #UTedChat

A2: I'm concerned that people think because of the internet there is no need to teach social studies. #utedchat
  • KiltedMath_T Jun 20 @ 11:16 PM EDT
#utedchat My most concern is tech movement towards replacement of teh the teacher and not towards innovative support. #utedchat
    In reply to @anderbrooke
  • LynetteYorgason Jun 20 @ 11:16 PM EDT
I'm pretty concerned about the addiction to screens. I see the effects of it in my students and I'm worried it will get worse. It affects my classroom so much more than I want it to already. #utedchat
  • KiltedMath_T Jun 20 @ 11:16 PM EDT
Might be more need now than ever. The internet maybe isolating us more than ever before. #utedchat
    In reply to @misteralvord

More opportunities for students to utilize technology—possibly the one-2-one. #utedchat
  • anderbrooke Jun 20 @ 11:17 PM EDT
I've been thinking about this in relation to what's been called the "lost decade"-- the last ten years when literacy rates have stagnated. I wonder if sometimes tech divides our focus in unhelpful ways. #utedchat
    In reply to @vb_kristin
  • NanaTeacher22 Jun 20 @ 11:18 PM EDT
A2 replace the teacher and the class with online courses for students. They earn the Ss the credit but don't develop 21st century skills #utedchat
  • LynetteYorgason Jun 20 @ 11:18 PM EDT
I totally agree with this. I worry that technology is forced on teachers or used just to be used. Tech should always be something initiated by teachers and used in ways that they want it to be used. #UTEDchat
    In reply to @vb_kristin

If tech can replace you as a teacher then you aren’t doing it right and you should be replaced. #utedchat
    In reply to @KiltedMath_T, @anderbrooke
  • ajmerritt Jun 20 @ 11:19 PM EDT
Changes that can happen without proper training for educators on how to best implement them. Or trainings that are not beneficial to help educators use the tools they have #utedchat
  • KiltedMath_T Jun 20 @ 11:19 PM EDT
This is my largest concern. It further separates us. #utedchat

Super late to the #utedchat party, but checking in from Tooele. Jr. High Math is my thing.
  • DeborahGatrell1 Jun 20 @ 11:20 PM EDT
Reality is that works for some students some of the time, but constructivism requires interaction with content AND people. We have to communicate for meaningful learning to take place. Sitting at a computer all day just doesn't cut it. I've tried. It's maddening. #UTEdchat
    In reply to @NanaTeacher22
  • russellchasew Jun 20 @ 11:20 PM EDT
I’ve seen this happen. I think students know when the teacher isn’t invested in the technology and you are right... counterproductive #UTedChat
    In reply to @vb_kristin
  • LynetteYorgason Jun 20 @ 11:20 PM EDT
And it really doesn't matter how good it is if teachers don't have ongoing PD and clear support in the classroom to integrate it. #utedchat
    In reply to @DeborahGatrell1
  • vb_kristin Jun 20 @ 11:20 PM EDT
A3 - I'm planning on playing with this a bit next year...implementing coffee house style seating. Allowing different spaces for different tasks/students/projects. Students can work alone or collaborate...work on computers or with pen and paper. Flexibility is key. #utedchat
  • Profesora_A Jun 20 @ 11:21 PM EDT
#utedchat more relax spaces with higher expectations of performance.
    In reply to @KiltedMath_T
  • marcihouseman Jun 20 @ 11:21 PM EDT
A2: I am most concerned about school leaders not embracing the “teachers as facilitators” model. We must let go of the concept that teachers are the sole means of providing instruction. #utedchat
  • Darling_Math Jun 20 @ 11:21 PM EDT

Don't know about others but years ago I ditched the desks and got round tables. This at the #Empower18 conference one of the vendors from CORE gave me a great stool #utedchat
  • DeborahGatrell1 Jun 20 @ 11:22 PM EDT
A3: Depends. Much of this is influenced by WHAT is to be taught in addition to the HOW. I'm all about collaborative learning, so we have tables (again). It would be nice if I had room for flexible seating, but I have too many students to allow many options. #UTEdchat
  • KiltedMath_T Jun 20 @ 11:22 PM EDT
    What is the stool? #utedchat

  • russellchasew Jun 20 @ 11:23 PM EDT
I think the teacher plays a facilitator role and students take charge of learning #UTedChat
  • anderbrooke Jun 20 @ 11:23 PM EDT
The model of "teacher as the sole gateway to knowledge and feedback" definitely has to go by the wayside. And what a relief to the teacher when it does! #utedchat
    In reply to @marcihouseman
  • NanaTeacher22 Jun 20 @ 11:23 PM EDT
sorry it was Kore not core https://t.co/t2UnTFsmGy #utedchat
  • misteralvord Jun 20 @ 11:24 PM EDT
A3: I saw a catalog today with standing desks for students. I think in the future we won't need desks. I'm just concerned what that does to classroom management. #utedchat
  • LynetteYorgason Jun 20 @ 11:24 PM EDT
And the intense need to distinguish good and bad sources and to be able to establish context is such a crucial skill and it's absolutely what social studies is about. #utedchat
    In reply to @KiltedMath_T, @misteralvord
  • Darling_Math Jun 20 @ 11:24 PM EDT
Q1: Less paper. VR and the ability to travel the world without leaving the classroom would be cool. Its the next best thing to going places in person. #utedchat
  • MathDavidUtah Jun 20 @ 11:24 PM EDT
A3: Learning spaces in the future need to be flexible to allow for many different learning sets. They MUST always have a teacher who knows, loves, and guides students. They should also be places where students can explore, create, problem solve, and make. #utedchat
  • DeborahGatrell1 Jun 20 @ 11:24 PM EDT
Too bad this wasn't included as part of the new Social Studies core! #UTEdchat

A2: I'm concerned that people think because of the internet there is no need to teach social studies. #utedchat
  • marcihouseman Jun 20 @ 11:26 PM EDT
A3: I hope that learning spaces are collaborative & flexible & are defined to include learning that takes place beyond the walls of the classroom. I hope that teachers are empowered to move students along a personalized learning journey & leverage tech to do so. #utedchat
  • anderbrooke Jun 20 @ 11:26 PM EDT
I think there will be less overall structure (like bells and even rows of desks and assigned seats), but more self-structure. In other words, environments where students are accountable to create structure in their learning with the teacher facilitating. #utedchat
  • MathDavidUtah Jun 20 @ 11:26 PM EDT
#utedchat Don't forget the "why"! That must always come first.
    In reply to @DeborahGatrell1

    In reply to @KiltedMath_T, @anderbrooke, @misteralvord
  • LynetteYorgason Jun 20 @ 11:27 PM EDT
A3: I'll be honest, I can't really imagine learning spaces being terribly different. There is already so much flexibility and difference in the way teachers place things in their classrooms. #UTEDchat
  • russellchasew Jun 20 @ 11:28 PM EDT
There are teachers at my school who have investigated the use of standing desks. Not sure where they have gone, but I need to check in with them and if they have plans to implement the standing desks #UTedChat

A4: More personalization, more student choice and creativity, more opportunities to collaborate and create. Framing this is SOOOOOO important though. We run a lot of risks with these exciting new opportunities. If students don't buy in, we've got big problems. #UTEdchat

    In reply to @Darling_Math
  • vb_kristin Jun 20 @ 11:31 PM EDT
A4 - There are so many technologies that allow students to explore their own interests in so much depth. Allowing time for "passion projects" could help students see the relevance in what they are doing...these would be much more difficult without technology tools. #utedchat
  • kennyassmus Jun 20 @ 11:31 PM EDT
A3: Spaces perhaps the same, the way S’s use them, when they use them and how, that is a different story. #personalizedlearning #utedchat

  • MathDavidUtah Jun 20 @ 11:31 PM EDT
A4: Access, enhance creativity, facilitate real problem solving, help teachers with meaningful interventions, increase collaboration between teachers and between students. I could go on and on. Let's just please get rid of the drill and kill software. I'm begging!!! #utedchat
  • YoungUTed Jun 20 @ 11:32 PM EDT
A4: Personalized learning. I want my teachers to have an https://t.co/Wsogwqxvui of resources they can tailor to each student. Then the teacher can meet each student at their needs and interests. #utedchat #personalizedlearning
  • DeborahGatrell1 Jun 20 @ 11:32 PM EDT
I wish we actually believed in investing in instructional coaching at the school level in #uted. But we don't, and that's a shame. So many lost opportunities. We have to emphasize teacher growth if we really expect student growth. #utedchat @HSG_UT

  • russellchasew Jun 20 @ 11:32 PM EDT

How to be a good teacher: 1. Set high, but reasonable, standards. 2. Hold students to those standards. 3. Let students fall (don't bail them out at the first sign of struggle). 4. Help students back up. 5. Love your students. #kidsdeserveit #teachergoals
