I’m Dave. My favorite technology is the internet because it can connect our students with experts and classes all over the world. We can communicate faster and in ways not possible without it. Not to mention the knowledge at our fingertips, apps, sites... #utedchat

Deborah, Secondary Social Studies in Granite District. I actually just traded in my desks for tables (again). Classroom tech - I'm grateful to have enough Chromebooks for all of my students to use one and collaborate on projects. #UTEdchat

Lynette Yorgason here. My favorite technology I've used has been flipping my classroom. However, I got a tiny taste of using virtual reality and loved it! #utedchat

2 things for me: first, I’m excited to see to what extent we continue to connect with students outside of class. Second, I’m excited to see the new creative things educators can come up with. The sky is the limit #utedchat
Kristin, high school ELA teacher in Davis District. I have student desks, but have arranged them in tables. Looking at going more coffee house flexible seating next year. I love having laptops for all my students...it's a game changer. #utedchat
I'm excited to see consolidation of open-source content and improved student and teacher access to such content. NewsELA is a fantastic resource and the ability to alter reading levels helps in those small ways that wind up mattering a lot. #utedchat
100% I am excited to see virtual reality become something commonly used, but I'm excited mostlky because I think it's the next step to augmented reality in the classroom and I think that has SO many possibilities! #UTEDchat
A1: I am most excited to see teachers leveraging technology to maximize their instructional time and provide personalized learning experiences for students. #utedchat
Do a search and check out some videos... It has the posibility to travel in time and around the world with your students without leaving the classroom. I just learned about it. #utedchat
A2 - I think I'm most concerned about technology in general. Although I love it and try to use it to enhance learning in my classroom, I too often see people using technology just to say they are. This is counter productive. #utedchat
A2: I'm always concerned about the claims made by ed tech companies, especially around personalized learning. I'm glad to see there is a greater emphasis on vetting tools. #utedchat
A2: what concerns me most is that there may be no change. Politics and backlashes against promising educational innovation have stymied us in the past. We must get past all that. #utedchat
A2: Exactly what Brooke said. Just because Ed tech folks say it's good doesn't mean it is. It's especially annoying when tech folks tell us how to teach when they've spent no time as teachers. Ugh. Beware the shiny baubles! #UTEdchat
A2: I'm always concerned about the claims made by ed tech companies, especially around personalized learning. I'm glad to see there is a greater emphasis on vetting tools. #utedchat
A2: #utedchat my biggest concern will be keeping up with the upcoming changes. Administrators are govern by policy and budgets that can sometimes block progress and innovation.
Not sure if any specifics, but with the new wave of innovative technology in the classroom, I don’t want to see educators implanting technology as a compliance thing, but rather using it to have a meaningful purpose #UTedChat
I'm pretty concerned about the addiction to screens. I see the effects of it in my students and I'm worried it will get worse. It affects my classroom so much more than I want it to already. #utedchat
I do love the possibilities of Newsela. I'm spreading the good news at my school and hope to get some demonstrable results from using it next year in an action research project. #UTEdchat
I've been thinking about this in relation to what's been called the "lost decade"-- the last ten years when literacy rates have stagnated. I wonder if sometimes tech divides our focus in unhelpful ways. #utedchat
I totally agree with this. I worry that technology is forced on teachers or used just to be used. Tech should always be something initiated by teachers and used in ways that they want it to be used. #UTEDchat
Changes that can happen without proper training for educators on how to best implement them. Or trainings that are not beneficial to help educators use the tools they have #utedchat
Reality is that works for some students some of the time, but constructivism requires interaction with content AND people. We have to communicate for meaningful learning to take place. Sitting at a computer all day just doesn't cut it. I've tried. It's maddening. #UTEdchat
A3 - I'm planning on playing with this a bit next year...implementing coffee house style seating. Allowing different spaces for different tasks/students/projects. Students can work alone or collaborate...work on computers or with pen and paper. Flexibility is key. #utedchat
A2: I am most concerned about school leaders not embracing the “teachers as facilitators” model. We must let go of the concept that teachers are the sole means of providing instruction. #utedchat
Don't know about others but years ago I ditched the desks and got round tables. This at the #Empower18 conference one of the vendors from CORE gave me a great stool
#utedchat
A3: Depends. Much of this is influenced by WHAT is to be taught in addition to the HOW. I'm all about collaborative learning, so we have tables (again). It would be nice if I had room for flexible seating, but I have too many students to allow many options. #UTEdchat
The model of "teacher as the sole gateway to knowledge and feedback" definitely has to go by the wayside. And what a relief to the teacher when it does! #utedchat
A3: I saw a catalog today with standing desks for students. I think in the future we won't need desks. I'm just concerned what that does to classroom management. #utedchat
And the intense need to distinguish good and bad sources and to be able to establish context is such a crucial skill and it's absolutely what social studies is about. #utedchat
Q1: Less paper. VR and the ability to travel the world without leaving the classroom would be cool. Its the next best thing to going places in person. #utedchat
A3: Learning spaces in the future need to be flexible to allow for many different learning sets. They MUST always have a teacher who knows, loves, and guides students. They should also be places where students can explore, create, problem solve, and make. #utedchat
It looks very different.
But my students were more productive and I was able to help kids figure out how to release energy and learn at the same time.
#utedchat
A3: I hope that learning spaces are collaborative & flexible & are defined to include learning that takes place beyond the walls of the classroom. I hope that teachers are empowered to move students along a personalized learning journey & leverage tech to do so. #utedchat
I think there will be less overall structure (like bells and even rows of desks and assigned seats), but more self-structure. In other words, environments where students are accountable to create structure in their learning with the teacher facilitating. #utedchat
A3: I'll be honest, I can't really imagine learning spaces being terribly different. There is already so much flexibility and difference in the way teachers place things in their classrooms. #UTEDchat
There are teachers at my school who have investigated the use of standing desks. Not sure where they have gone, but I need to check in with them and if they have plans to implement the standing desks
#UTedChat
A3 - I envision classrooms with ergonomic hover desks... intuitive touch screens... re-hydrating lunch from pill form like on the Jetsons... Yeah, pretty much the Jetsons. #utedchat
So true! No instructional tool achieves the desired impact without effective training and ongoing coaching. Impact comes through effective implementation. #utedchat#ChaseImpact
A4: Teacher who use technology to its full capacity will provide students with resources that will only be confine by the students imagination and curiosity. But not longer will money or distance be a factor that affects how much can they learn and experiment.
#utedchat
A3: Flexible LEARNING SPACES! Check out these photos from @NeboDistrict where we hosted #DTLUtah Bootcamp this week. Yes, these are student spaces. I ❤️ the garage doors from classrooms to common spaces. #utedchat
A4: More personalization, more student choice and creativity, more opportunities to collaborate and create. Framing this is SOOOOOO important though. We run a lot of risks with these exciting new opportunities. If students don't buy in, we've got big problems. #UTEdchat
A4 - There are so many technologies that allow students to explore their own interests in so much depth. Allowing time for "passion projects" could help students see the relevance in what they are doing...these would be much more difficult without technology tools. #utedchat
A3 I would like to hope that as new schools are built the entire school with have the feel of a learning center such as open area study spaces and not just within the classrooms #utedchat
A4: Access, enhance creativity, facilitate real problem solving, help teachers with meaningful interventions, increase collaboration between teachers and between students. I could go on and on. Let's just please get rid of the drill and kill software. I'm begging!!! #utedchat
A4: Personalized learning. I want my teachers to have an https://t.co/Wsogwqxvui of resources they can tailor to each student. Then the teacher can meet each student at their needs and interests. #utedchat#personalizedlearning
I wish we actually believed in investing in instructional coaching at the school level in #uted. But we don't, and that's a shame. So many lost opportunities. We have to emphasize teacher growth if we really expect student growth. #utedchat@HSG_UT
In reply to
@marcihouseman, @LynetteYorgason, @HSG_UT
A4: Of course it helps with student engagement, but be careful, just because they're staring at a computer screen, doesn't mean they're engaged. #utedchat
First I think students must see the value in it like we do. Then I think the use of technology allows students to become more independent thinkers, and thus ready to attack the world more positively when they leave us.#UTedChat
This is a good point. I always want to take my students out of the classroom but the logistics are so stressful that I don't ever really consider it. #utedchat
I'd be happy with a Star Trek replicator, myself. I understand the NASA folks were working on such a device based on the concept of 3D printing, but they really struggled to make pizza... #UTEdchat
I completely agree. but therre seems to be this idea that personalized learning is sitting a kid in front of a screen all day.
It need to be driven by the teacher.
#utedchat
As I read this tweet I think of the very important difference between allowing students to FALL vs. allowing students to FAIL. There is a difference. #teachergoals#WeLeadEd#atplc#TLAP#UTedChat
How to be a good teacher:
1. Set high, but reasonable, standards.
2. Hold students to those standards.
3. Let students fall (don't bail them out at the first sign of struggle).
4. Help students back up.
5. Love your students.
#kidsdeserveit#teachergoals
A4: As we speak, I’m working on my Masters through an on-line program, my wife is grading S’s work on a class she teaches online and my phone is 1000x more powerful than my first computer. Technology is the vehicle to do whatever we need to accomplish. #utedchat
A5
I hope educators will be able to take advantage of the personalize learning opportunities to impact the lives of our students for good. Give challenges to those who need it and provide more one to one attention to those that can benefit from it. #utedchat
A4: I think Ss will have access to real-time AI feedback that will improve their interactions with Ts. So much of teacher feedback, esp in writing, is on a basic level, accessible to AI. With AI-assisted feedback, Ts can focus on pushing students to think deeper #utedchat
Risks, if identified, can be mitigated. Not all Ed Tech is created equal. Not all Ed Tech is even good. A great teacher doesn't need it, but used wisely it can be a game changer. #UTEdchat And the #Deborahs are always ready and willing to give feedback and call it like it is.
A4: Nope, nope, nope. We need collaboration. Check out these kids in personalized learning and flexible space. They are ENGAGED, not just screen time. Still personalized AND in person. #utedchat
A5 - It all depends on the teacher. A poor teacher could rely solely on the technology instead of teaching, making them ineffective. A good teacher will leverage the technology and blend it with strong teaching to give the students the best of both. #utedchat
A6
The most important thing is for tech companies to spend time in the classroom. It isn't possible to meet the needs with out understanding those needs first hand.
#utedchat
Q6 Ed Tech companies need to work with teachers for develop technology. They understand the tech, but not necessarily the needs and the minds of our Ss. They need to spend time with us and even with our Ss to determine our needs #utedchat
A5: More opportunities for tiered instruction. Less “come see me after class” and more “I’m available to support you right here, right now”. #utedchat#UMTSS
A5: I think it allows us to have the power and time to analyze student data and do more action research so we can be effective. The real time data you can get with technology is awesome. Quizzes corrected in front of your eyes so you know what S's know & what they don't #UTEDchat
I think I can personally attest to this... as a young teacher early in my career I feel like I don’t have the resources and knowledge to really integrate tech in a game-changing way. Even though I know there are tons out there! #UTedChat
A5: With Ts as facilitators, it's more important than ever that teachers be able to see when a student is learning vs not. This need will push us in a direction we've been going for a long time: pedagogy over content. Experts in teaching first, subject matter second. #utedchat
A6: We need to reach out to them and help them know how to help. We recently talked to IT and business professionals and showed them our curriculum. They told us that if S’s were in fact learning these things, they would hire every single one. #utedchat
Don't even worry, you'll get there! But I do believe it's important you get there when you are actually ready and not when it's thrown at you. You're most effective when you choose it because you understand what you need #UTEDchat
A6: Collaborate to design learning experiences that are aligned to the standards, allow students to move at a pace that is appropriate for them, and provide effective and timely feedback that helps students understand how they are progressing towards competency. #utedchat
I think it would be awesome to get educators involved in the developing of new tech designs. Can allow for minor problems to be avoided and make it more useful #UTedChat
A2: I think public education has many challenges. Amongst our most important is retaining teachers who feel valued, who are willing to do the work while treated as the professionals that they are. This is vital to maintaining and improving our future as a community! #UTedchat
A6: One word @UCET!!!! Did anyone get a chance to spend time in the maker/tinker playground? True collaboration between providers and teachers with both parties coming away stronger. #utedchat
A6: This is the Q of the night. Ed Tech coms need to include teachers in innovative development from the ground up. A school architect I know well involves Ts deeply in designing schools. EdTech needs to do the same. You can't serve people unless you know what they need #utedchat
A4: Of course it helps with student engagement, but be careful, just because they're staring at a computer screen, doesn't mean they're engaged. #utedchat
A3: Classrooms of the future are flexible collaborative safe spaces where students learn content with caring adults supporting them. I’m grateful that many of our teachers already create this climate for our students! #UTedchat
A6: In my experience, ed tech companies are hungry for feedback. It's a brutal market and companies want to grow with teachers- and even better with whole schools and districts. This gives Ts a great position for input. #utedchat
A6: I think you hit the nail on the head when you said "work together" as long as tech companies are working WITH and FOR educators the classroom of the future will be amazing. #UTEDchat
A5: If it hasn't yet, it will force a shift from spouter of all knowledge (Sage on the Stage) to facilitator of learning (Guide by the Side). I'm still working through the transition myself. So much is expected, just in differentiation, that it's hard to do it all. #UTEdchat
From visiting schools - I have seen better options. Some of those who had standing desks have gone away from them because they didn't work as well as they thought. #utedchat
A7 there is very little I know in regards to these technologies. I wouldn't be able to tell how they could benefit my content area before learning more about it.
#utedchat
Q6 oooh good question. Yes tech companies are experts in tech and teachers are experts in teaching. Dialogue about what we need and what works need to be happening between the two parties #utedchat
A4: Technology should enhance innovation and creativity. It’s a tool that can enhance the learning opportunities. So many ways to engage students! #UTedchat
A7: Easy. Virtual field trips. I'm already working on it. I'm also transitioning paper quizzes to CANVAS for instant feedback and retests. Looking at doing more with Newsela too. Tested it out on some classes the last month of school. Mixed results, but potential. #UTEdchat
#utedchat I love how ed tech can be student led and drive project based learning experiences. Students are most powerful and engaged when they lead out and own their learning. Get “down and dirty” with ed tech in the learning pit!
A7: I would love to incorporate 3D design into geometry studies and then have students print them. Calculating volume, angles, side lengths, surface area, optimization. It could be epic. #utedchat
Tell me why I need that in Social Studies. Not why it's nice to have, but why I NEED it. Bear in mind cost as a factor, in competition with all the other things I need. #UTEdchat
Oh, they are! You don't even 'need' VR glasses (bear in mind they make some students motion sick) since you can do it on any computer that has a mouse or touchpad allowing you to click and drag to look around. #UTEdchat
I was going to say the same but then I remembered going to @EricJensenBrain based seminar and using VR and I thought this will be awesome in the classroom #utedchat
As always, I enjoyed hosting #utedchat
The classrooms of the future are in good hands with educators like yourself.
If you are interested in working towards bringing the future to reality, Message me. Putting together educators around the state to move forward.
#utedchat
A5: Educators need to be trained and have resources to the right innovative tools. So excited that @alpineschools is introducing Innovation Coaches this next school year to ensure that educators have access to the right tools to get the job done! #UTedchat@blaineedman@ddraper
Geometry is perfect for 3D design and 3D printers.I only teach Jr. High, so we don't get as into it as High School, but I envision Ss using measurements, angles, surface area, volume, shapes, scale, to create. #utedchat
CANVAS is the online Learning Management System we use in Granite. Blackboard and Google Classroom are other examples. They allow online testing with instant feedback. Newsela (in brief) is a website that offers free leveled text sets of documents and articles. #UTEdchat
A7: Big Data technologies are as accessible as Raspberry Pi. Getting students hands-on experience with distributed computing, Hadoop, and machine learning sounds like sci fi, but it's needed now. #utedchat
Canvas is an online learning platform where teachers can put their assignments, create discussions, put quizzes, tests, and flipped lectures for students. Students can turn in assignments and then teachers can correct them online and it's AWESOME #UTEDchat
Yep. Because YOUTUBE. Search any famous place and 360 video. The major news stations are recordning on site news reports in 360 now too. Check out NYT and CNN as examples. Keyword 360. #UTEdchat
Q7: I do PL with principals on continuous improvement for them and their teachers. I'm not sure about 3D printing but how about VR field trips for teachers to classrooms where all we have talked about is happening. Then open dialogue and collaboration. #utedchat
Gotcha. My school uses a lot of blackboard and google classroom. However I will look into CANVAS to see what else it may have to offer! Thanks! #UTedChat
Geometry is perfect for 3D design and 3D printers.I only teach Jr. High, so we don't get as into it as High School, but I envision Ss using measurements, angles, surface area, volume, shapes, scale, to create. #utedchat
Teach to standard, not to time? That's what we always joke about in the Army anyway... Since there's always more to get done than time to do it in, it's really a moot point. #UTEdchat I mean, you've seen our new social studies standards, right?
A6: Living at the foothills of Silicone Slopes means we have opportunities for business partnerships and need to listen to what they need. What they need are critical thinkers who can problem solve in creative ways! Must start early! #UTedchat
And in education, we don’t steal. 😉 We borrow brilliance. 👍🏼 I hope I was able to share something worth borrowing! I know I took away some important ideas about edtech collaborating with teachers. #utedchat
