Let's see if anyone out there in Twitterland joins the conversation. I am always glad that you are here. Like I often have said, it wouldn't be #resiliencechat without you!
Q1: Think of a S who is manifesting behavior that some would label "hyperactive." What is a "strengths-based" word that could be used to describe the same behavior? #resiliencechat
Q2: Think of a S who is manifesting behavior that some would label "Impulsive." What is a "strengths-based" word that could be used to describe the same behavior? #resiliencechat

#Resiliencechat A3 #Committed Some might believe that an individual who does not agree with them is stubborn, however, a child who is #committed to their perspective, feelings, personal will, may be fighting to stay sane. We must work towards understanding their motivation.
A3: I think of "stubborn" as those who require time to process & feel comfortable with what's going on around them. This enables them to make the best decision bc they are taking the time to think things through! Hello by the way! #resiliencechat

Q4: Think of a S who is manifesting behavior that some would label "manipulative" What is a "strengths-based" word that could be used to describe the same behavior? #resiliencechat
A4 #Resiliencechat I think the tough part is that someone who labels others as manipulative might not like that someone else has leveraged them to get something, and yet, in our world, being able to motivate others to act is in one way a form of manipulation. So good or bad?
A4 Willing to listen, but I don't think there's any positive spin on manipulative. Advertising, maybe? Where's Stan Freberg when you need him? #resiliencechat

A5: We are all "victims" to something & that just means we are living through life experiences of varying degrees. Important thing is to learn from the experience & be reflective. #resiliencechat
A5 Survivor. I'm a cancer survivor. Not a cancer victim. I'm a sexual harasser/sexual assault survivor not victim. Victim weakens. Survivor is from strength. #resiliencechat
A4: Manipulative I can do - crafty and creative for sure. There is certainly an art to manipulation. Some are really good at it, others not so much! #resiliencechat
A5: Maybe I'm lost... But I don't see being called a victim as being a negative personality trait as much as I see it as simply bad luck... #resiliencechat
A6 #Resiliencechat When I was a School Psych my approach was to strive to identify strengths, skills, and build resources to #empower students to gain more abilities to conquer new goals. Very different than a deficit-model that seeks to quantify all that is wrong with a child.
A6 I shifted from being bullied to being a survivor the moment I stood up to my bullies. Called the one a son of a bitch in front of his friends and older brother. He was speechless. #resiliencechat
I hear what you are saying yet when someone refers to themselves as a "survivor" it is then possible to ask what strengths did they tap into to get to be able to call themselves a survivor. It allows them to see and identify their strengths #resiliencechat
I truly wish more school psychologists were like you. They've been trying to label Kid O since she was six. Thanks Rob for being one of the good guys. #resiliencechat

A6: Happens a lot in the classroom when kids say they aren't good at something. Reframing conversations is essential to their understanding that everyone has strengths. #resiliencechat
A6: Using positive positive language with the kids I tutor. For instance, when a student doesn't get an answer to a word problem correct, I tell them their way of approaching the problem was very creative, but let's look at it from a different angle! #resiliencechat
Not sure I have time to explain it, but it's a huge emotional and psychological shift between victim and survivor. Makes a huge difference. #resiliencechat
A7 #Resiliencechat Words are #powerful tools that can motivate the brain to flourish and grow, or withdraw and wither. The more locus of control an individual has, and if they can own their story & perspective there is more opportunity for #resilience to be present.
A7 Victim is weak. Survivor is strong. Essential to help people be strong within themselves. OK to be vulnerable but better from a place of strength than weakness. #resiliencechat
Oh Rob... If you only knew a fraction of my struggles with school psychologists over the years, then you'd understand my appreciation. Wish you were here. #resiliencechat
Q7: Does anyone out their in #resiliencechat land have a word they want to throw our way to see if we can reframe from a deficit-based word to a strengths-based word?
Not saying it to be kind @ResiliencyGuy saying it out of recognition of your perspective on your field versus what I was up against and caused my burn out. #resiliencechat
I get that. I've just never heard of someone being a "victim" as a personality trait... I get that I'd rather be a survivor of an attack, instead of a victim #Resiliencechat

I get what you're saying. I was so vulnerable as a kid. So sensitive. Neon sign on forehead: bully me! Had to learn to be strong. Why that matters to me. #resiliencechat
Just think how communication with parents would be enhanced if we were to work from a strengths-based perspective instead of a deficit-based one. #resiliencechat

I hear you... But I just can't imagine your teachers telling your parents that you're: "Sensitive, energetic, a great listener, a caring soul, and a victim..." Lol that's all I'm saying #resiliencechat
How about even conducting a strengths-based IEP where you have to ID students strengths as well? I have worked with districts to do just that. #resiliencechat
A8: I volunteer at an after school program for "at risk" youth. These kids are constantly labeled by their weaknesses, but I can't wait to talk with them about their strengths & interests tomorrow! #resiliencechat
A8 #Resiliencechat I’m going to work to use words that can help to better describe situations and what we can do about them to improve circumstances for children. Meaning, I’ll continue to work towards seeing positive, and building positive in my world. #SPARKLE
I think that there is a way to communicate the need for interventions even in a strengths-based way. It is not a matter of putting on rose colored glasses. It is reframing (speaking of glasses...LOL) #resiliencechat
Hell, my teachers didn't tell my parents anything. That simply wasn't done back in my day. The kids OTOH made sure I knew I was a victim. Took a while to unlearn. #resiliencechat
How about this...instead of saying "at risk youth" and labeling them in a negative way how about saying. "youth from at risk environments." Youth aren't at risk...their environments are. #resiliencechat
#Resiliencechat Hey all, by the way, it is #SPARKLE month, which means, “Spreading Positive Actions Regarding Kind Loving Encounters” In @FairfieldSuisun we are working to call out our #AMAZING staff and partners who are helping others to #SPARKLE Please join in!
