A1) DI means giving multiple ways for Ss to access practicing a specific skill. Also using multiple methods of teaching-kinesthetic, musical, auditory, verbal...#mtedcchat#mtedchat
A1: I like ASCDs definition "Differentiated instruction is an approach to teaching in which educators actively plan for students' differences so that all students can best learn." #MTedchat

A1: Differentiated instruction means meeting students where they are and providing appropriate shifts in content, process, product and learning environment. Must be data informed (purposeful). #mtedchat
A2 Differentiated Instruction menas kids are not put in a box. Everyone learns to their ability. Tech helps me have Ss at 2nd grade level and 7th grade level all in the same 5th grade class.#MTedchat
A2: DI is important because not all Ss learn the same way. Sure, it can be extra work sometimes, but the progress Ss can make, make it so worth it! #mtedchat
A2: Differentiated Inst is vital to ensure all students grow to meet personalized goals. We have to meet needs of whole child. That doesn’t mean a diff lesson plan for every student, but it does mean we scaffold and enrich through authentic learning experiences. #mtedchat
A2 DI is important b/c there is no "one size fits all" for instruction in any class or grade level. Every learner needs something unique to them. And there is the challenge! #MTedchat
A2 Differentiation is important because our job is to teach ALL students. Benefits are buy in from S and P, increased confidence for S, challenges are managing students who are on all different levels and providing meaningful instruction for all of them #MTedchat
A2: Benefits: Supports personalized learning; Challenges: Developing lessons especially if you're not effectively using data, students' interests, or students' abilities. Must consider the whole learner, not just what is convenient to design for the practitioner. #MTedchat
A2 Each student has specific needs and a one size fits all approach is like trying to open doors with the wrong key.....it scuffs the doors and every one gets frustrated! More ways means more learning #MTedchat
A2: The biggest to challenge to implementing differentiation is breaking away from traditional methodology. Many stuck on fair=same. Has to become part of the culture of the classroom/school. #MTedchat

A3: DI is as important for gifted kids as for emerging learners. If kids aren't challenged, they don't reach their potential. All my kids were good students in Math but none are passionate about it or able to do mental math; it's because they were never challenged, #mtedchat
Yes!! When we started Walk to Read in the first grade years ago, I was really reluctant. Now that I changed grade levels I miss it SO much. It's hard to get buy in though. Change can be hard. #mtedchat
A3 Reading and Writing workshop made it easy for me to differentiate. Kids wrote self chosen stories, read self chosen books and I met with them in small groups or 1:1 to help them w/ individ. needs. #MTedchat
A3) Conferring w/ Ss during reading and math. Prompts appropriate 2 what Ss skill is. Diff writing paper options, math bins for Ss choice, book boxes w/ Ss selected books #mtedchat

Q3 I would hope Ts would see me reading to some kids who need more support, challenging others to go beyond, using tech to meet needs rather than just being a device in front of them, and inspiring ALL my Ss to be curious and learn! #MTedchat
A3: From a coaching perspective, I listen to a Ts goal or challenge and support them by providing scaffolds to help them reach their goal or overcome their challenge. Each teacher is different, requiring a different plan of action. Differentiated. Personalized. #MTedchat
I just learned about these new interactive lessons on @PBSLrnMedia at #2018neta They look like a great way to let kids work at their own pacehttps://montana.pbslearningmedia.org/collection/ilcoll/#.Wmf0zZM-eL9 #MTedchat
A3 S working in groups, partnerships or with the teacher, reading different books, working on different activities in math. Honestly a differentiated class probably appears to be more “hectic” than traditional rooms where S are all sitting in rows reading the same book #MTedchat
I much prefer differentiating within my classroom... Walk to Read often sustains and widens gap between kids most at-risk and fluent and above (in my experience). I like Daily 5 model, w/small group & individual conferencing #mtedchat
Oh, I'm going to share this with a teacher I had a conversation with today. We were looking at this Khan Academy page to engage students with science during an intervention period (self-paced): https://t.co/6e3KO1blF5#MTedchat
Q4: Lesson plans should be more than one-size-fits-all. What are the key elements a teacher needs to consider when developing a differentiated lesson plan? #MTedchat
We actually have had great results getting Ss to Benchmark with the Walk to Read model we used. I'm not familiar with the Daily 5, it sounds interesting though. #mtedchat
that looks cool! Have you looked at https://t.co/8U8PnoYUxG for self paced work? Lots of neat modules and then the option to post student projects #MTedchat
Yes! Fair means everyone gets what they need to become their best selves. The "everyone gets the same" approach is for the convenience of the teacher. #MTedchat
A3: You would see a busy classroom.. with students supporting one another. Students modeling high levels of independence. Goal folders with student samples, progress charts and reflections. Lots of visual cues and routines. #mtedchat
A4: This may go down like a lead balloon but when it comes to planning and differentiation I think we over plan as teachers. Paint ourselves into a box that it can be hard to see the individual student from. I adjust to fit needs as we go. #mtedchat
Q4: Lesson plans should be more than one-size-fits-all. What are the key elements a teacher needs to consider when developing a differentiated lesson plan? #MTedchat
A4 Lesson plans are a jump off place for me to remind myself where I want everyone to get, to..I then work on how to get all of my students to that place and how I can change things up to meet them all were they are needed.#mtedchat
A4) An anchor or mini lesson. Time 4 Ss to practice skill in different ways. What CAN your SS already do. What connection opportunities will the experience provide #mtedchat
I agree. I found the most benefits in my self-paced classroom when I was making real-time decisions about what a student needed. Also, it helps if you ask the student what they need...such a novel idea. #MTedchat
That's great. I value what works. I have oft seen where Ss will move within their groups, but do not move up into higher groups very frequently. That would make a difference. As long as the struggling readers have some models of fluency and access to authentic texts. #mtedchat
A4: Lesson plans should have a pre-assessment, objectives, a variety of instructional methods, and attainable goals. Then be ready to adjust those as needed based on the Ss. #mtedchat
A4 I like #HyperDocs which can be modified and go beyond the one size fits all. You can even put differentiated docs within a HyperDoc and w/ Google Classroom assign it to specific Ss, but it looks identical color and font wise. #MTedchat
A4: A DI lesson plan should give students several ways to show what they've learned. Also, the teacher should not have a fixed idea of what he/she wants students to learn; let it be open-ended. #mtedchat
The other hard part is explaining that fact to parents. As with transitioning to standards-based grading, most come around…but it takes a while to help them see the “why“ #mtedchat

#mtedchat I do think there are some goals in mind that everyone needs to meet, in fact without a goal in mind it hard to know if or how well benchmarks are reached.
Q5: DI lessons require thoughtful design. How can data be used to support differentiation for students and help us strategically design instruction while building efficiency in our implementation? #MTedchat
As one teacher told me, when he told students exactly what he wanted, at best he got back exactly what he was looking for — and nothing more. He shifted his assignments to be more open-ended & students often produce results that greatly exceed his expectations. #MTEdchat
A5: By being mindful of the data we have we can group students and create tasks that address their needs but also their strengths. This way everyone has a chance at success. #MTedchat

A4: Answer these Qs when planning: What are your nonnegotiable’s for all when ensuring the standards are met? What do students need to know & be able to do? How will you know they are at mastery? What will you do if they don’t meet that target? #mtedchat

@cristama I used to be a trainer for my district and all our 3rd year teachers were trained on differentiation and the questions you shared were our mantra! They are so important as some Ts think its all about stations and open ended projects! #mtedchat
A5 without that data the cycle of implement, revise, do over, doesn't lead to improvement of practice. No one ever reaches perfection, but we can all work on getting better each time! #mtedchat
A5: Data can be the 1st layer of differentiation. I.E. exit tickets can be used to formulate groups for the next day's lesson; however, interactions w/small groups, students' interests, and observations can result in further differentiation. It's not all about numbers #MTedchat
Exactly. Many get lost in the semantics between personalization and differentiation. Personalization can be part of differentiation. The key is knowing your students, having your students get to know themselves as learners… and supporting the trajectory forward #mtedchat
A6 I use workshop format in reading and writing and it makes it really easy to differentiate for those subjects. I do a lot of conferencing/self-assessments with my students. Lots of small group work, or working one-on-one with S when I can #MTedchat
Q6 I love to differentiate my assessments, and students love to show they learned the content in a way that taps into there way of knowing. I cant do it everytime but like to give the option of oral, handwritten, word processed, or picture/video (HS bio) #mtedchat
