A1: @ColumbusAcademy has a beautiful campus with many places to explore! We start our precalc course by going outside and figuring out how tall large objects are. Then we film soccer kick parabolas on the football field. So many great options! #octmchat
  • LemmonLady Nov 8 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1: My school is near a hospital and a mall. I think there is so much math going on in both of those places that could be investigated and would be meaningful to students. #octmchat
  • vinylmath1 Nov 8 @ 8:37 PM EST
#octmchat How about a skate park?
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:37 PM EST
What a neat place to take students and reimagine a space with a math lens. Great idea! #octmchat
    In reply to @MissLovelyWE
  • vinylmath1 Nov 8 @ 8:38 PM EST
#octmchat Where ISN'T there mathematics to explore? ;) It's just a matter of making it HAPPEN. That's the challenge IMHO.
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:38 PM EST
Awesome! Nice connections to trigonometry and parabolas. I've seen people measure their shadows and think about ratios (if it's a sunny day!). #octmchat

Q2 is coming soon. We have 4 prompts tonight with an end time of 9:00pm EST. #octmchat
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Nov 8 @ 8:40 PM EST
A1: The whole town of Troy, Ohio is so very mathtastic. We have a town circle, architecture, and a tall stadium. #octmchat
  • vinylmath1 Nov 8 @ 8:40 PM EST
#octmchat Make sure to read Bridget and Sarah's paper if you get a chance: https://t.co/7jDGiYCbJS
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:40 PM EST
Awesome! I really like how connecting spaces and math can make the mathematics more meaningful. Students have told me that they look at the world differently after this activity, with their "math glasses". #octmchat

Here is Q2 for #octmchat. Remember to use A1 for Answer 1 and include #octmchat in each of your Tweets.
  • chrissybug24 Nov 8 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1: I'm wondering what Ss might discover in the stadiums, theaters, parks downtown Cincinnati? I #noticewonder everywhere... I feel like everything is fair game, right? #octmchat
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:41 PM EST
Yes, it takes some planning if teachers want to determine some questions before hand. Sometimes my pre-service elementary students come up with the questions/ mathematize the situation themselves. #octmchat

  • jcanigl1 Nov 8 @ 8:42 PM EST
#octmchat A1: Akron has the Soap Box Derby! Find the slope of the hill!
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:42 PM EST
Now I want to visit Troy, OH! #octmchat
    In reply to @JacquiLehmkuhl
  • vinylmath1 Nov 8 @ 8:42 PM EST
A1: Yes, let the STUDENTS come up with the questions . . . uggh (why didn't I think of that!) #octmchat
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:43 PM EST
Thanks Todd! We are so happy for the chance to work with you and OJSM! #octmchat

A2: Honestly, I get math models and math modeling a bit confused. Help! #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Nov 8 @ 8:43 PM EST
  • LemmonLady Nov 8 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2: We model with math every day! We use pictures, manipulatives, drawings, number lines and more to make sense of math and share/explain our thinking with others. #octmchat
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:44 PM EST
Agreed! One thing I like about #mathtrails and modeling is that students start putting on their "math glasses", just like they might put on their "Accessibility glasses" or "art glasses". #octmchat
    In reply to @chrissybug24
  • MathRocks73 Nov 8 @ 8:44 PM EST
A1- I had a kindergarten T take her class on a walk around the school looking for the different shapes they were learning. #octmchat
  • vinylmath1 Nov 8 @ 8:45 PM EST
A2: I have my students construct mathematical models to describe real-world phenomena fairly regularly (e.g., predict the number of Starbucks in Ohio in 2020). Is that modeling? #octmchat
  • jcanigl1 Nov 8 @ 8:45 PM EST
#octmchat A2: I once helped Mobile Meals to create a shorter path since gas prices were the most expensive. It really was wonderful. We actually went on a ride to bring the lunches and compared prices. Students loved it.
  • chrissybug24 Nov 8 @ 8:45 PM EST
    A2: I love 3 Act Tasks by @gfletchy and @ddmeyer for math modeling... #octmchat https://t.co/Hbl7l483Cx https://t.co/AEv5fZ1OY4

  • rachaelhgorsuch Nov 8 @ 8:46 PM EST
A2: I'm a big fan of math modeling. One of the truest modeling activities we do is making pamphlets describing different types of loans and how they work. Students use spreadsheets to create amortization tables and explain to their classmates about what they learned. #octmchat
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:46 PM EST
Great point! "Model" can be used in different ways. Sometimes it means a physical diagram or tool (noun), sometimes it means to use something as a stepping stone (verb), and then there is the messy and often unpredictable use of it to solve real-world problems (verb). #octmchat

  • vinylmath1 Nov 8 @ 8:46 PM EST
    #octmchat Great idea, Rachael. @rachaelhgorsuch

    Here is Q3 for #octmchat.
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:48 PM EST
Wonderful. This is the super helpful 'noun' interpretation of model. It's also neat to think about the 'verb' of modeling, both nicely structured situations and messy real-world problems! #octmchat

  • JacquiLehmkuhl Nov 8 @ 8:48 PM EST
A2: Model the spread of a juicy rumor, model the temp of my diet coke as it sits on my desk, and we have modeled my life expectancy ~ that one was a little scary to say the least. #octmchat
  • LemmonLady Nov 8 @ 8:48 PM EST
A2: This was our model today.: a chat with skip counting, multiplication and repeated addition. Also, using pictures of animal feet to show our groupings #octmchat
  • MissLovelyWE Nov 8 @ 8:49 PM EST
A2 Recently, my students used math modeling to establish how many feet and toes would be in our classroom. Some represented people, while others modeled by counting backpacks by twos and tens. #octmchat
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:49 PM EST
So cool! What a wonderful connection to your community -- modeling with math in action. #octmchat

    #octmchat 1 is a snail, 10 is a crab . . . love that one. :) @LemmonLady
  • rachaelhgorsuch Nov 8 @ 8:50 PM EST
A2: We also do a fun semi-modeling activity that is a simulated "zombie walk" to learn about how diseases spread. The kids really enjoy it! In general, Ss really love modeling tasks. :) #octmchat
  • CDubyaSD Nov 8 @ 8:52 PM EST
I’m showing up late, but I like the creative ideas. We are studying proportional reasoning. Can’t wait to apply this to our local grocery store. #octmchat
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:53 PM EST
Last question (Q4) is coming up in one minute #octmchat
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:53 PM EST
Nice! This seems like a nice modeling problem that uses visuals to solve something that will have generally one answer. I wonder how we could make another more 'messy' experience to extend to a different kind of modeling? Both important aspects of modeling. #octmchat
    In reply to @MissLovelyWE
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:54 PM EST
Here is Q4 for #octmchat. Be sure to build your PLN and follow new people from tonight’s chat! #mathtrails
  • chrissybug24 Nov 8 @ 8:54 PM EST
@bridgetdruken ... can you give us an official definition of "Math Trails?" (did I miss this?) #octmchat
  • LemmonLady Nov 8 @ 8:54 PM EST
A3: honestly, i'm still processing on this idea... I know I want to try it, but I also want to be intentional. #octmchat
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:54 PM EST
Great! This seems like a nice modeling problem that uses visuals to solve something that will have generally one answer. I wonder how we could make another more 'messy' experience to extend to a different kind of modeling? Both important aspects of modeling. #octmchat

  • vinylmath1 Nov 8 @ 8:54 PM EST
@bridgetdruken Great question. What is a math trail! :) #octmchat
  • vinylmath1 Nov 8 @ 8:55 PM EST
#octmchat To me, a math trail is a series of related mathematics tasks embedded in a real-world location. But that's off the top of my head . . .
  • vinylmath1 Nov 8 @ 8:56 PM EST
#octmchat you have to check out their paper in our award-winning journal (lol). :) Here's a link: https://t.co/7jDGiYCbJS
  • LemmonLady Nov 8 @ 8:57 PM EST
A4: I am thinking that #mathtrails would be great to focus on estimating and checking for reasonableness, but really so many other skills too. #octmchat
  • jcanigl1 Nov 8 @ 8:58 PM EST
I would love to see ratio and proportion as an essential topic. In addition, I would love to see a revision of the poster "When are we ever going to use this stuff? #octmchat
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:58 PM EST
To me it involves mathematizing a situation and putting structure to a situation to pose and solve questions about a real-world context. What do you think? #octmchat

  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 8:59 PM EST
I just saw this now. Nice! I like to put the student in the driver's seat when thinking about math trails. They are doing all the math practices, being mathematicians, when doing a math trail. #octmchat
    In reply to @vinylmath1
  • vinylmath1 Nov 8 @ 8:59 PM EST
#octmchat Joanne, great idea with the poster. Have the kids do research and make their own poster answering "when are we going to use this?" Love it! :)
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Nov 8 @ 8:59 PM EST
A3: A math trail through THS, we are going on an Angle Hunt: Vertical angles, Linear pairs, Corresponding, Adjacent. It's all about the lenses. #NoticeThePretty #octmchat
  • bridgetdruken Nov 8 @ 9:00 PM EST
