#PPL1chat connects educators together to engage in conversation and share resources related to personalized professional learning. The chat encourages educators to prioritize their own growth and occurs the first of each month from 8:00-9:00 pm ET.
Excited to collaborate with all of you! Allie Rodman - Professional Learning Designer/Facilitator and School Board Member from NJ. One thing I accomplished in the new year I am proud of is reading two books in January. #PPL1chat#Resolutions2019
Hi! Shannon Szymczak- 7th grade ELA and @AVID4College Coordinator. One thing I’m proud of from the new year was sharing my #SEL experience at the @AspenSEAD release in DC! #PPL1chat
A1. It's hard to pick just one, but one of my favorite professional books is Peter Senge's "Schools that Learn." I always look to the organizational learning concepts of personal mastery and mental models when designing and facilitating professional learning sessions. #PPL1chat
Q2 it's so hard to just pick one tool from the #gafe family. Having everything on drive and having the app on my phone makes everything so easy #PPL1chat
A2. I just started using an @ErinCondren planner to organize my projects and stay focused on my goals. Who can pass up colored pens and amazing stickers? #PPL1chat
A good planner is my best organizational tool (and I just abandoned one that wasn't working and went to another style that had a better weekly spread with room for notes) - find what works! #PPL1chat
A2 If it's not in my google calendar it doesn't exist. Plus being able to layer personal, work, organizations, etc.. helps me keeping everything straight #ppl1chat
Quiet reflection? I'm not sure that exists in my life! I think reflection happens more on-the-go than anything else. (But I can't wait to hear how others make this happen.) #PPL1Chat
A3. My favorite place for quiet reflection is Horseshoe Bend in Page, AZ. It's simply breathtaking. My only wish is that I could experience it more often. #PPL1chat
A3. Outside of my classroom, Bluebeard coffee shop here in Tacoma was my go to place while writing my @NBPTS papers. I spent many hours there sipping coffee, listening to music, with all my papers spread out on their big wooden tables. Ever since, it’s been my place! #PPL1chat
I wish I had suggestions! I've made blogging and working out two of the big things on my chains. https://t.co/U3JNtgStEX That motivates me to actually do the writing that is in my head. #PPL1Chat
It gamifies doing the things I want to do. So right now I have about six different chains set up. Some are daily but most are once a week or several times each week. #PPL1Chat
Huge fan of Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey... Visiting their school in San Diego was amazing - the climate and culture for teachers and students should be replicated everywhere... I'd ask them, "What's next?" #PPL1chat
I got stuck in the CLT airport a couple weeks ago and was surprised how much I appreciated white noise. May start working this into my sleep routine for deeper sleep. #PPL1chat
So many to choose from...
I adore Peter Johnston, especially the work he did for Choice Words and its sequel.
I'd ask for tips on how to make new habits when it comes to things like the language we use that are so ingrained and subconscious. #PPL1Chat
I’d say Antonetti again. I sound like a dang groupie. But engagement is at the heart of everything I do and after hearing him speak I realized I was the kid that was COMPLIANT! Not sure how often I was actually engaged in school and I wanted to change that. #PPL1chat
A5 I have been working out with a trainer and having an appointment to keep makes me leave work on time. I also have been using @MyFitnessPal to track my food choices. Oh also I am obsessed with my @HidrateSpark. I have been drinking over 80oz a day for over a year #PPL1chat
A5. My favorite way to practice self-care is making time each night to read with my kids. We've made it a scheduled appointment to make sure it happens when I'm home. When I am on the road, I have started using taxi and and take-off to get in my reading time. #PPL1chat
We were just talking about compliant vs engaged in a planning session yesterday... So easily mimicked at the surface and so very different just under the surface... #PPL1chat
A5. It’s so hard for me during coaching season, but now that it’s over, I’m ready to focus on me again! I’m a big fan of walking our waterfront (I have to be by the water), taking baths and naps. It’s all about the naps! 😉 #PPL1chat
A5: I stay in track with some sort of fitness throughout the week. Even when there’s so much happening - squats & bicycle crunches can be done anywhere! And I love iced coffee soooo, that’s my comfort. #PPL1chat
I love that you are working to change ed practices that didn't work for you as a learner. We have a habit of perpetuating bad practices simply because it's "the way we've always done it." #PPL1chat
We had a great discussion about motivation that dug into compliant vs engaged at #EduCon last weekend. If you click on 'live stream' you can watch it. (It is mostly folks talking so I don't know how helpful that is! #PPL1Chat
I often look at the differences between "engagement" and "investment" in student learning. Am I engaged in the lesson or invested in my journey as learner? #PPL1chat
Conversation. I have to talk to others - whether that's in person conversations or here on twitter or whatever. I need to talk things through and get thoughts from others. #PPL1Chat
Focusing intentionally on 5 aspects of self-care (without guilt) - physical, intellectual, social, spiritual, and emotional... Making time for me in different ways and art journaling has been great for me and a great way to connect with my kids #PPL1chat

A6. I learn new things through trial and error. I need to try it on, walk around in it, and see how it fits. "Sit-and-get" won't get it done. #PPL1chat
A2: My favorite “tool” is actually a two-part “system”. As a mom of one (soon to be two), wife of a husband w a crazy schedule, teacher-leader, and student pursuing my principal cert, I need both an electronic and paper planner! Seems crazy but works for me #PPL1Chat
It's Friday, and you've been rockin' it all week with kiddos plus continuing your own learning tonight. Give yourself some grace. Thanks for sharing! #PPL1chat
A3: Seems incredibly silly to share this publicly but my car! Seems to be the only quiet space in my life these days. Sometimes I just sit in the parking lot at school before going in, sometimes a few deep breathes before heading into the house, or a silent ride home! #PPL1Chat
You're not alone! For as tech-crazy as I am, I had to go with a paper planner for my projects and vision-setting this year. My goals and big rocks were getting lost in the weeds. #PPL1chat
A6. Conferences are my thing. @ASCDconf and @AVID4College always get me pumped to try things. I’m thankful I get to travel to new places and hear new perspectives. Disequilibrium! Staying in my own little bubble is the most detrimental thing that hinders my learning. #PPL1chat
A4: The psychology teacher in me LOVES this q. I think depending on where I am in my practice it’s changed. But my top three are: Vgotsky, Maslow, and Bandura! #PPL1chat
It has to be a right fit or it won't stick... Learning can be just knowledge, but without some avenue for application, it's not going to make a difference - and that's why we're here!! #PPL1chat
A5: This is the thing I’m probably the worst at in LIFE & teaching. However, over the years I’ve realized how imp’t it is. 2 ways: Be present (no tech) every pm until my kid is 😴 (good advice from @thelearningloop yrs ago), and manicures on Sunday! #PPL1chat
