#SciEdChat Archive
We engage all shareholders invested in quality science education by sharing perspectives, triumphs, and challenges. More than a chat, #SciEdChat invites participants to apply what we share to the classroom, board office, coffee shop, and dinner table. We collaborate on topics from Anatomy to Zoology and all fields of study in between to discover what works for students, what doesn't, and how to empower our communities of learners to change the world.

Welcome to ! Introduce yourself by sharing your name and a goal for tonight's chat!
-
The format for the chat will be Q1, Q2. Be sure to use A1, A2, & in your responses.
-
Christopher from KS, MS sci. Looking to be more intentional about how ss reflect on labs
-
Hello ! First year 7th grade science pirate {I mean teacher!} in Greenbrier, AR! Need all the knowledge on lab write ups!
-
Great to see you Christopher!
-
welcome to the field! Best of luck.
-
Hello, Melissa! Great to have you with us tonight!
-
yeah! I start teaching tomorrow, so I am jazzed!
-
Q1 is coming down in 2 minutes!
-
I start tomorrow as well! I knew it would be fine to do a chat tonight because like I was going to get any sleep anyways!
-
-
Right! Although, been going since 530 this morning... when I find that pillow I'm a goner!
-
A1: Hunting for micrometeorites 10th grade. Got to hold a piece of space in my hand that I got from our parking lot
-
A1 rat dissection at the end of AP bio (exam was over, so we were free to explore, w/o fear of grades), bog field trip too
-
Thanks for staying up for the chat!
-
I teach 7th and 8th in Ohio. I'd be glad to share resources or just field questions you might have anytime!
-
My 10th grade Earth science teacher became a major influence on my becoming a teacher.
-
likewise! I teach 6-8 science in Kansas
-
Do you feel ready to go for the new year?
-
A1 cont. my AP bio T was a big influence, despite only lecturing every last day of class. He brought passion to it!
-
Yes! If you want your Ss to love what they are doing, you have to love what you are doing
-
I feel as ready as possible with new standards (NGSS) and no curriculum! Excited to dump the text, but nervous.
-
Dumping the text already? R-E-S-P-E-C-T to you, Melissa! ;)
-
it's odd, in some ways, because I very rarely lecture! But if I bring .5 of energy as he did, I'm good
-
-
Nice! I keep a couple for reference, but otherwise never touch em. Took me a couple yrs to get to that point
-
You're well versed in inquiry, I take it?
-
A2 Lab report must include a question, prediction, hypothesis, or a couple of the above mentioned!
-
I'm getting there. , , , and have helped me to jump IN!
-
Predictions are so important - not only to the lab itself but to deepen the learnign experience for the S.
-
EdMentors and EdLeaders are invaluable!
-
A2 question, research, exp. Design, and findings
-
I like the design idea - do you ask all your students to design their own experiments?
-
Question 3 in 1 minute...
-
-
At what point and how do you facilitate them designing their own labs? This seems daunting to me in MS.
-
A3 YES! Takes a lot of front loading to pull off a good lab experience. Must plan ahead, generate buzz even.
-
The design phase is definitely a higher order thinking activity. But high expectations are good for MS
-
A3 I want students to be energized, too! Exhaustion doesn't always correlate to learning. Work to learn, don't learn to work!
-
smaller labs usually are part of a larger project where that they have more design freedom than lab allows
-
A3: I know it's a winner if I have to step out for a second and the Ss don't even know I've left.
-
I've flopped several times in this regard. Usually labs are part of design process, not the product ifself
-
Agreed! Exhaustion doesn't always mean learning but it always means effort was put in.
-
-
-
-
Agreed. Important to gauge when ss is getting too frustrated, ready to give up. Must help them prepare for & manage that stress
-
-
A4: I had a S once who instead of designing an amusement park ride, she wanted to design an athletic shoe. She made it work!
-
A4 be ready to answer "so what?" In a compelling way. Don't be afraid to geek out and show that passion!
-
A4: She had to accomplish the same goals but she applied them to what she was interested in. I was surprised how well it went!
-
that's awesome! Way to encourage ss voice and choice
-
A4 Provide interesting materials that make them wonder "Where does she want us to go with this?" All about the hype!
-
A4: Be ready to explain the "why" when the times comes. Who knows where that conversation might lead.
-
Next question in seconds...
-
-
A5: We've been working on this at my school for the last 3 years. Not easy when you have a wide range of Ss in one class!
-
A5 this is one of my goals for this yr. I struggle to diff'ate . Inquiry should lend itself to this, but I'm weak here
-
Join us if you can, Leslie!
-
true statement! I hear differentiate a lot, but haven't found much solid training on it.
-
A5: There are so many ways to diff'ate. How do you know you've hit the sweet spot where your Ss can knock it out of the park?
-
The last thing we want is for diff'ation to just be a buzzword and no follow through.
-
Right! I see why it should matter. This yr I have only 4 preps (in past had 5, even 6), so hoping I can do better
-
ONLY 4??? I thought 3 was stressful...
-
When ss can document their own improvement, engenders confidence
-
A5 Feeling a little fuzzy on differentiating labs; interested in strategies you guys have!
-
Our last question in 2 minutes...
-
4 is stressful! This is life at small parish schools.
-
My team has found that writing lab questions in order of Blooms' has been great at finding where Ss are.
-
wish I had some to offer. My hunch would be to use ss portfolios as evidence of growth
-
-
I agree!!! I've never had more than 3 preps and I've struggled with each one. You rock!
-
A6: I like letting students take time lapse videos during lab. Then, they can write about the changes they see a bit easier.
-
-
-
Thanks for the invite, got distracted with the kids' bedtime routine. Maybe next time!
-
I'd be glad to share an example of a lab that is written that way. It's not perfect but it's a good start.
-
I love family life! No apologies necessary!
-
How do the portfolios impact your labs? Would like to incorporate them using . Then what?
-
A6 offers some great tools for collaborating.
Also, teaching ss to generate questions & present answers or new questions
-
Would be much appreciated! Thanks!
-
been looking at for this. This is still in hunch firm. Idea is ss see evidence of their own growth,...
-
... looking beyond just grades and %s
-
Thanks everyone for the great chat tonight! Next week I'll announce the topic for September's !
